This is the most meta Horror film ever made! It was originally going to be released in 2009, but was delayed for 2 years as MGM was facing bankruptcy. It was finally released in 2011.
@@StonayBalogna it is meta though…. The whole movie is literally self-aware of the fact that it’s a stereotypical slasher movie until the fourth wall is broken at the end
@@StonayBalogna It is subtly meta in that the “Gods” are US, the audience. Demanding that young beautiful people be killed horribly on a regular basis for our satisfaction. Everything the “ritual” requires is what audiences expect.
I think this movie takes such a crazy turn that you just don't expect it. That's what I loved about this movie was so different compared to all of the horror type slasher movies.
Idk if you noticed but when they showed all the monsters in their boxes, you can see the twins from The Shining! I believe there are other iconic horror characters but I can’t remember which ones. I know the guy with the saw blades in his face was inspired by Pinhead. You can look up what monsters they had in the movie & I think you’d enjoy that. I’m going to have to look it up to refresh my memory now lol
"Is this gonna be a supernatural thing, or a serial killer kinda thing?" Me - ..."yup!" Lol... seriously though, I love watching people react to this masterpiece :)
6:08 "How do those even work?" One way mirrors. Not the way it's shown in movies and on T.V. The glass is only lightly silvered and it relies on the room on one side of the mirror being lit while the other room is in darkness. So when you see a cop show with people watching an interrogation through a 'one way mirror' with the lights on in the observation room just know that in real life the suspect would be able to see them.
To answer the question, yes if Dana had shot marty everything would have been fine, the "old gods" are supposed to be us with our expectations of what a horror movie should be.
Fun Fact: There's a reason Marty doesn't go swimming at the beginning. He's supposed to be a a slacker stoner, but the actor had such a cut physique that they just told him to keep his shirt on, cause "Marty" wouldn't have abs like that.
one of my favourites. that scene where all the monster are released is probably one of my top favourite scenes. ❤ Since the gods took over the world and we probably couldnt get a sequel. But I wish they'd make a prequel tho. to show more of the different mosters.
In the meta sense that this movie revels in, you can basically consider every horror movie made before this one as a “prequel” of sorts… you just didn’t get to see the “behind the scenes” stuff. 🤣
I would love to see how the other scenarios would have played out, had Curt blown the shell, or Holden tried to solve the puzzle, or any of the other artifacts in the basement.
This movie explains all the tropes in every horror movie. Like the characters, there's the stoner, the jock, the nerd, the other girl, and the virgin (the final girl). Explains why every character in horror movies say they should split up. I've seen a theory that the ancient one is the viewers, they got mad because the horror movie is incomplete, because the stoner isn't dead, because typically, the stoner always die. There's the typical horror movie villains, the Sawhead in the elevator is actually the Pinhead, you can see the intruder from The Strangers. the tree from Evil dead is also there, and a lot more. I'm bad at explaining stuff
This movie is one of the the most creative, bonkers, ambitious horror stories I’ve ever seen. Love all the characters, and how the ending just decides to plunge headfirst into the madness and its inevitable consequences.
The final 20 minutes of this movie made me so happy as a horror fan. I saw this theatrically 4 times, it’s probably in my top 10 favorite horror movies.
Ohhh this is DEFINITELY a favorite movie of mine! It’s so clever & fresh, imo. I have the tiniest, for lack of a better word, “complaint” & that is I would’ve liked for it to have been kept a secret that there was a whole ass company orchestrating all of the events until things started to pop off. Maybe not even confirm it until around the end of the 2nd act, beginning of the 3rd. Like, just have little clues throughout that would make sense once the company plot was revealed/confirmed. I do still like the way they decided to do it & think it was done very well! That’s really the only thing I would change. I feel like the movie could’ve been more “scary” that way & the reveal would’ve been a really big “WTF” moment. They could’ve still included some humor & upped it more once the company reveal happened. That would mean almost no character development for the company employees, but I don’t think we really needed any character development for them lol. It’s still just such a fantastically clever & fun movie that I have rewatched quite a few times & will definitely rewatch it several more times in the future lol 😂 GREAT REACTION MAN!!
I love this movie for being probably the closest thing to a mainstream SCP Foundation movie we'll get - I doubt Hollywood would ever touch the SCP lore explicitly for licensing reasons but there's so many similarities in Cabin and its great... mysterious worldwide organization of scientists and tactical units containing lots of different paranormal entities and even using them to contain a greater threat.
This is the BEST horror/comedy ever made! I love how they even gave it a generic name to throw people off. The guy who played Marty is amazing. TRIVIA - They had to dress Marty the way they did because they loved his acting and wanted him in this film. The problem was, in real life, he was way more jacked than Chris Hemsworth, who was supposed to be the jock!! Your reaction to Sigourney Weaver was great. I’m glad she is to the point in her film career that she can just do stuff for fun and have a great time, like Meryl Streep does.
I decided I love your channel enough and watch you daily you're my 3rd only channel to get bell reminders. You have great reviews and I appreciate them.
A detail I noticed but haven't seen mentioned about this movie is that the little quake that happens after they pull the lever for "the Fool"'s death is probably because they activated their ritual blood thing without him actually dying since he comes back near the end. Seems like the old gods didn't like them doing part of the ritual prematurely.
So basically this movie is a spoof on the horror movie genre. It pokes fun at all the horror movie tropes and makes various references to many horror monsters. The old gods are suppose to represent horror movie watchers and how if a horror movie doesn’t deliver the same tropes people complain. They want blood, violence and monsters.
11:00 the director grew up in St Alamos where people work on nuclear bombs. The science workplace is heavily influenced by people everyday going about their day like it was totally normal while they're working on things that can literally end the world
what i love about this movie and what noone ever seems to talk about is how the film is basically telling us that every classic horror film we've ever seen, like halloween, friday 13th, hellraiser etc is all orchestrated by the underground organisation. which explains why horror movie characters always have the same tropes, like a jock, a virgin, a stoner, and allways make stupid decisions like splitting up or running upstairs
I know this doesn't have to do with the movie you watched here. (One of my favorites by the way and loved the reaction.) But I was wondering if you would ever consider doing like a rewrite of the walking dead series with it being broken up into a few parts for each season? You having seen the comics and just have really good knowledge and grip on the show as well would make that very fun and cool to see.
I highly, HIGHYL recommend you react to the movie Awake from 2007 - extremely underrated and underappreciated movie! Has potentially some of the most tense moments of any movie I've ever seen. Haven't seen anyone react to it, which is such a shame, and I think you would really like it!
This was the movie that got Chris the Thor roll. It was filmed before the first Thor movie but released after because the studio folded or sommat. Originally, Liam Hemsworth was the front runner to play Thor. The Joss Wheadon said, well, I just finished working with his brother Chris on this movie and I think he'd be a better Thor. Caused a bit of a rift between the brothers for a few years, but apparently they're good now.
They really wanted to use Fran Krantz as Marty. He had the character of a stoner down and his acting was perfect. The one problem they had was he was built like a brick s&$t house! Chris Hemsworth was supposed to be the jock, but Fran was WAY better built than Chris. Costume design had to put him in layers of old clothes to hide how buff he was and Fran would hunch his shoulders to make himself look smaller. Fran was perfect casting! I was lucky and saw a screening of this in Philly. I got to meet Fran Kranz (Marty) and he signed a poster. It was a homage to horror movies. I really liked this movie a lot but I had a few friends that were disappointed because they thought it would be a traditional horror movie. But I did like where it went.
This is similar to like Halloween six where there's a cult or people watching everything happens and even orchestrating it . Michaels victims are sacrifices especially his family members to appease the gods lol. That's why they had curse of thorn Lol

I think showing that eagle slamming into that barrier was a bad call on the director's part. It ruins the scene later when Chris Hemsworth runs into it with the motorcycle. Doesn't have as much impact if you know before hand it's not going to work.
In my interpretation, the old gods represent our basest human instincts, the stuff that fueled ancient wars, Vikings, Huns, genocides, massacres. Our blood lust, hatreds, fears. And the “company” represents the Hollywood system, but more broadly the “bread and circuses” that keep us civilized. We demand the endless stream of horror stories with the stereotypes that we are proud and ashamed of and the tidy moral lessons of what you must do or be to survive, which gives us comfort against the uncertainty of the unknown, and the producers do their best to give us “what we want.” One of the commentaries I see is in how Marty questions if preserving the way things are is worth it if the cost is giving the “audience” this fucked up shit. It’s notable that Marty is the only one that sees through the designs of the company because he is “inoculated” by his weed, or you could say that the weed makes him woke. There’s an interesting dynamic that the more we wake up and demand more inclusive, realistic, progressive stories, the less the entertainment does to sate those human evils resulting in escalating turmoil, radicalism, and chaos. But I for one agree with Marty, I can’t stand the veneer of “everything is awesome” that is draped loosely over the deep horrors we conduct continually as a species. I’d rather the masks come off so we can all see each other for what we really are. Only then can revolution begin to build something new and hopefully just a little better than the last system of order.
