Classic. I know Bates gets the attention here but Caans physical work is agonizing and exquisite, he was really overlooked during awards season.
I’ve heard they had trouble casting it because macho actors didn’t want to be bedridden the whole film. Like that it would be bad for their career, not so much personally. Then you’ve got Sonny Corleone taking on the part and NAILING it.

Both Kathy Bates and James Caan really excelled in their roles. I've heard mixed rumors about James as far as their personal life/behavior on set... especially about his relationship with Bette Midler in 'For the Boys', but in general I want to avoid the personal lives of actors, to concentrate on their roles, in this he is amazing. I also have loved Frances Sternhagen in every role I've seen her in, including this one. This depended on some real character actors to fill out the supporting roles, and I think it is stronger for it. Hollywood REALLY needs to stop concentrating on 'NAME' actors and focus on character actors with a proven track record, because they really make the film, even though they aren't on the marquee. I love actors who can put aside their egos to play the supporting roles who may end up dead (or looking like a*holes.... though that's not a thing in this move). Employ actors over stars, is what I mean, and this has some GREAT supporting roles. Those who buy their own press tend to degrade the film they've agreed to be in, and they're stronger to me when I can see they've put aside their press agents to just play a role.
@@robnowaczewski5351Yeah, I’ve similarly heard bad things about James Caan. I definitely don’t write off artists’ works, especially when they’re part of an ensemble, but my cynicism leaves me unsurprised when I hear a celeb has been behaving badly.
A little info on Kathy Bates: no one knew who she was before this movie. The role was turned down by everyone you can think of which is why it went to her. Not only did she come out of obscurity to win the Oscar in her first major role, this was the first time anyone had EVER won a performance Oscar for a horror film.

I was 12 when my family and I had read this book before the movie came out. When we saw the trailer we all felt like they had pulled her right out of our heads. Stephen King liked her performance so much that he wrote Delores Claiborn for her to play the role.
I've never really looked on this as horror, more a tense drama.
Not true. Ruth Gordon won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Rosemary’s Baby. The book MISSRY is more savage as she amputated part of his finger and leg.

Those four words have never been so terrifying. Kathy Bates is incredible in this film.
In a film full of great moments, that one line is my favourite. The way Kathy Bates delivers it is sublime as it is detached.
She been consistently great in everything I’ve seen her in, but the next time she really wowed me was in *AHS: Roanoke.* I think I can safely say that’s in my Top 3 favourite seasons of it.
In a show that could often be hit or miss, that one absolutely nailed it.
I’ll not risk spoiling anything by mentioning any more, but needless to say, I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys her performance here…
When she does the spin & squeals about Misery being alive & how she's gonna go put on her Liberace records. I die every single time. Kathy Bates is amazeballs in everything, but this is one of my favorite roles of hers. You can't take your eyes off her anytime she is on screen. Perfect, perfect casting. 😍 James Caan is also pretty damn fantastic.

Kathy Bates is incredible in everything.
I read this book in one six hour sitting. By the end, I had nearly become Paul Sheldon trapped in a bed. Brilliant book and brilliant film.
I remember basically gnashing my teeth while reading this and I despised Kathy Bates' character. Absolutely brilliant acting performance by Ms. Bates. Exquisitely painful.
The novel was fun but a big drawback for me was all the passages we had to read of Paul typing the new Misery book, with the typewriter font and the missing letter n. Ugh, what a chore. I nearly ended up skipping those parts of the story-- I wanted to get back to the cat and mouse game between the two main characters.
It added to the theme, don't you think? Stephen King is my favorite author.@@eduardo_corrochio

Kathy Bates is phenomenal in this film! That hobbling scene really stays with you 😂
I'm 55 years old, and I still cannot watch that scene. I've seen it once in my life when I first saw the film, and every time I've seen the film since, I've had to cover my own eyes.
It's not just the scene itself It's the story she tells about It's origin.
It's how unnaturally far the ankles bend.
In the book she uses and axe and cuts off his feet.
This has to be one of the BEST Stephen King movie adaptations. It's such a thrilling story with brilliant actors that bring it to life.
This is one of the adaptations I like better than the book. Paul is more likeable here and the way the film streamlines the plot is great. Tho I did like that Annie kind of contributed to the actual book writing more in the novel. Like she came up with the bee sting allergy thing when Paul was struggling to figure out how Misery was buried alive.
It was good but nothing beats the Green Mile or Shankshaw redemption

She deserved that Oscar, no question. James should have got one too, his performance was amazing.
I absolutely love it when Paul shoves the ashes of the book into her mouth. It's so cathartic and symbolic, him using the pieces of his past to try and kill her.
I especially like how Paul fails to kill Annie with every tool of his world (the typewriter, the pages, his bare hands), but it takes one from hers -- the little pig statue -- to end her. I could be reading too much into it, but that's what I took away.

@MikeySea676 jimmy caan, RIP, was a hell of an actor. This is his best performance IMO. During that last scene with her, he's switching back and forth in emotions like crazy and he has to act from a wheelchair and convey a sense of helplessness while also being strong enough to "stand" (no pun intended) up to her in their final confrontation.
This is a 10/10 horror movie for me. There's something really scary about a human being such a horrifying villain instead of a ghost because it feels real and it's something that could actually happen in real life.
U guys should react to Dolores Claiborne. Its a Stephen King adaptation also starring Kathy Bates. King was so impressed with Bates performance in Misery that he wrote a book specifically for Kathy Bates to play the leading role for his book later on. Extremely good movie.

You know you've done a great job when a writer creates a book just so you can star in it. And it was a great movie. My mom loved it so much, and I enjoyed watching it with her.
I actually think is her best performance. Amazing as Dolores in every way.

I feel sorry for James Caan because Kathy Bates obviously deserved the Oscar but Caan is phenomenal at portraying that character in agony. I saw this at the movies and when those legs hit the floor the entire audience genuinely went "AAAARGH!" in sympathy lol

I love how immediately before the hobbling scene adorable Shawn is literally touching up his hair. Have to be prepared for one of the most brutal scenes in cinema history. 😂😂😂🎉😅
Rob Reiner went on such a superb run around this time. Princess Bride, Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, Stand By Me, Misery and then A Few Good Men. All superb films.
The real horror of Misery is that Annie Wilkes is not out and out evil. She just loses control to her psychotic tendancies. Superbly directed, given there's predominantly only 2 characters in one bedroom.

This was one of the first movies I saw that wasn't a cartoon. 7 year old me thought all women were like my mom, so I found Kathy Bates especially terrifying.
Why would your parents let you watch a movie like this at only 7 years old?

if he was anything like i was, left often with 2 older siblings (by 5 and 6 years) to babysit that left you to yourself, his mother probably never knew he saw it. by the time i realized my zombie nightmare that tortured me for years was really ptsd from seeing night of the living dead at way too young an age, i confronted my sister about what the heck was happening during babysitting. she said “i don’t know. we never watched you. we’d just turn on the tv and whatever was showing, you watched.” i was raised by wolves. 😒
@@samanthanickson6478 My aunt used to babysit me. My parents would send me with snacks and a movie to watch in their rec room. He'd end up changing it to something like this. We'd have to sit super close to the tv so he could turn it off quickly if my aunt came down. I also saw Carrie , and The Thing at their house. Dawn Of The Dead gave me horrific nightmares, but I never ratted my cousin out.

Kathy Bates is next level! I think she’s probably one of Hollywood’s greatest actresses of her generation.
Kathy Bates. What an absolute legend. She won an Oscar for her role in this movie and it was well deserved. She was terrifying but also gave Annie a humanity that made her more real. The scene when she's depressed and it's raining. Annie was a very sick, sad woman who desperately needed mental help. Kathy brought that all out perfectly. Wasn't just crazy for shock value. There's layers to Annie.
By this measure, then John Wayne Gacy and Ted Bundy were just sad, sick men who desperately needed mental help.
Like them, she was pretty much beyond it, given that she serially-killed infants and still kept the original news clippings about her trophies in a scrapbook.

Kathy bates did another great Stephen King movie that is fantastic as you know called Dolores Claiborne. It is not a horror or even science fiction film. It is a straight up super intense drama. Another super performance by Kathy’s Bates. Her performance is absolute fantastic in this movie. A fantastic film.

Dolores Claiborne is Kathy Bates’ favorite career character performance. She should have won the Oscar for that performance as well.

This is definitely one of the best King film adaptations and what makes it unique is not only how it showed the world the acting prowess of Kathy Bates, but also what happens when a director and actor step out of their comfort zones. Rob Reiner and James Caan both took on this film as a way of trying something new with their respective careers, and it paid off tremendously with Reiner directing it with a keen eye to the claustrophobic horror and at times dark humor of it and with James Caan really making Paul Sheldon a character you sympathize for and really want to see survive his hellish ordeal. Great reaction guys, and I can’t wait to see what you do next. ☺️
This follows the book pretty closely with a few differences; the 'hobbling' in the book is actually cutting off his foot (described in horrific detail), it does include when/how he gets rescued, and he actually does publish Misery's return at the end, as far as I can remember. So much of Stephen King's writing occurs in the protagonist's head, their thoughts and memories that it's hard to translate it all to picture. Still an amazing movie!
The book is so much different than the movie! They excluded so much scenes and brutality and gore in the book is on another level but I think that movie is better and acting is superb!
Yeah like how Annie survived long enough in the book to get to her barn and fetch her chainsaw, being found dead clutching it near the house implying she had had enough and was gonna just chop Paul up.
Although cutting off his finger and putting it on top of a birthday cake she made him and then setting it on fire to be used as a birthday candle, while asking him to blow it out has to be my favourite gruesome detail they missed out.

I started the book and never finished it, but I'll never forget the opening chapter, when he's describing what his pain felt like after the crash. It's been decades since I read it, and I still have the visual of the broken off piling and the tide in my head. Stephen King is a master at making things stick with you, so now I'm glad I didn't finish the book, lol.
Kathy Bates did win the Oscar for Misery and she apologized to James Caan for his legs during her acceptance speech. It was epic!

Oh damn, you guys had never reacted to Misery before this? I’ve seen so many Misery reactions, I just figured you guys already did one.
I've seen a number of your reactions and my biggest takeaway is just how much Tom reminds me of actor James Mason. Same accent, voice tone and quality, phrasing and pronunciation, and he even has a similar build and facial structure. If they would ever do a remake of "North By Northwest", Tom would be perfect casting for the role of Phillip Vandamm, or for the role of Norman Maine in "A Star is Born".(1954 version)

I used to think he was lying about the paper, too. He wasn't. "I bought the most expensive paper." It was expensive because she bought Eaton's Corrasable Bond aka erasable typing paper, which is why it smudges so easily.
It's why they hold a shot on the package of paper so long. He seized the opportunity, but he was telling the truth about the paper. No author would want to use that.

I think "Misery" was the first rated R movie I ever saw, at age 12. One of the great adaptations to film of a Stephen King novel. Kathy Bates is so great in this (and later, in "Dolores Claibourne").
This film, "The Silence of the Lambs," and then "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle" - which apparently was the film debut of Julianne Moore - were my key horror film/thriller memories from the early '90s.
First actor/actress Oscar won for a horror role - Kathy is phenomenal in this.

I always watched 'Misery' and 'Dead Calm' (Nicole Kidman, Sam Neill and Billy Zane) on the same day... great suspenseful thrillers.
The book is just as intense, but Kathy Bates absolutely killed it in this role. You cannot read the book again without thinking of Kathy Bates.
I always thought that James Caan was this one-note tough guy. This movie showed me what a good actor he is.
Stephen King loved the movie so much he wrote two more characters for Kathy to play. He wrote the book Dolores Claiborne which was made into a movie. He did a miniseries on a pandemic apocalypse called The Stand and casted Kathy as a radio DJ.
James Caan was just as good as Kathy Bates in this film. The anxiety and horror in his reactions are amazing.
Great reaction guys, fun fact, the actress that plays Paul's agent is Lauren Bacall, who was a huge movie star in the 40s and 50s. If you would like to see Kathy's range as an actor, check out Friend Green Tomatoes , where she plays a mild mannered housewife, I know it hard to imagine after this role. I think my favorite Stephen King novel made into a tv miniseries is STORM OF THE CENTURY

Storm of the Century wasn’t a novel first. King wrote the screenplay and it was always meant to just be a miniseries. (But they did release the screenplay as a book after the miniseries aired.) Totally agree, it’s one of my favorites too. I watch it every winter-preferably when there’s a snowstorm ❄️ And love Kathy in FGT 🥰 Having her and Jessica Tandy together makes my heart happy.

There is another Stephen King movie with Kathy Bates called Delores Claiborne. It's a great book and movie. Kathy gave a great performance in that one too.

I rate it higher as I don’t see any flaws. Yes, Kathy won the Oscar for this and James Caan played Sonny Corleone in The Godfather. He’s a great actor too. Loved the older couple, they brought some levity to the movie. Oh man, the hobbling was the worst.

This was the movie that made Kathy Bates a household name. Most people had never seen her earlier and lesser known work. As her career blossomed, fans were happy to learn what a sweet and down to earth lady she is. For younger folks, it’s always fun to see their shock after watching Misery. Especially if they only know Kathy Bates from her positive protagonist roles that followed Misery.
Excellent Halloween choice. A perfect reminder that the real horror is in real people.

Kathy Bates was fantastic in this. I agree with you guys. She did outshine James Caan which was unfortunate. That sledgehammer scene. I took me a long time to watch all the way through. Your guys reaction to that was mine as well. Love that you guys loved it. 😊
A lot of top male actors passed up the role for that very reason. So shout out to James Caan. It was a really hard character to play and Kathy Bates was amazing.

This is one of those movies that just stayed with me since I was a kid. For many years I couldn't unsee Kathy Bates character in whatever other film she was in.. Even in Titanic I thought she was gonna pull out a sledgehammer.

Pretty sure that in the book, Paul Sheldon absolutely did publish Misery's Return after escaping, and it was the biggest one yet. And he hated to admit it, but it was the best book he had written. And I think the whole thing was inspired by King's fans' disapproval when he wrote outside the horror genre, The Eyes of the Dragon
Yeah that definitely fits the book's feel and setting. Paul was reinvigorated with the Misery world because of Annie putting that fear into him about writing for his life, basically. In his thoughts during the writing, he's constantly amazed that he's enjoying writing for the characters and developing a deeper plot. There's a lot of mystery and intrigue due to stuff going on between the characters. Something that was only sparked because Annie gave him the idea for the bee sting allergy bit. That set him down a path in plotting that he'd never done in the Misery series prior. The fact that he was happy with his writing, I don't mind he published it in the novel. Doesn't really work as an ending for the film, given how differently Annie and Paul's relationship is surrounding the writing.
This is a pretty claustrophobic film, but not in a bad way.. it's an extremely well crafted film with great performances..

Saw it at cinema when it first came out. The first 18 rated film i saw at the cinema as I'd recently turned 18. Still stays with me as one of best films and performances.

Fun facts: the movie was shot chronologically to build up the tension between Kathy Bates and James Caan. Obviously it worked pretty good! The director Rob Reiner has a cameo as the helicopter pilot.

I love this movie. The book is a lot more brutal. Inside of hobbling Paul, Anne actually cuts of his foot and than castrates it with a blow torch. She cuts of his thumb when Paul complains about the missing “n” on the typewriter. She runs over a police officer with her lawnmower. Etc. I still think this movie is phenomenal, and the acting is extraordinary.

Kathy Bates is just stellar in everything. Fried Green Tomatoes is a classic drama if you guys ever feel like something more in that genre than thriller/horror/sci-fi/fantasy.
Kathy Bates with one of the most deserved Oscar wins in history. She was incredible in every scene. And by the way I love two guys fantasizing about how they would’ve escaped. The problem is she probably lives so far from the main road he would’ve had to crawl through the woods essentially. His best chance would’ve been to kill her as she’s coming back to the house from an errand so he could steal the car keys and drive to town.
Another Rob Reiner masterpiece. That man was on a roll for a while there.
There is a brilliant adapted play of Misery that toured the UK a few years back. It's extremely well-acted and if it comes your way again, I'd highly recommend seeing it. I believe Bruce Willis performed in it on Broadway.
The play was written by the same guy who wrote the movie's screenplay, William Goldman.
In the novel paul actually published misery's return and it ends up being very successful because of Paul's horrific experience with with Annie becoming infamous
She may not be an immortal monster, have no supernatural powers or come from outer space or the depths of hell, but Annie Wilkes is utterly, fucking terrifying.
This is a 10/10 for me, timeless classic, every time I rewatch it I am hooked again. Just a flawless film with brilliant suspense and acting.

it's been 30 years since i read Misery but i seam to remember that the character Paul Sheldon does release the book Misery's Return - i'm pretty sure he tricks her and burns blank pages. Also the hobbling scene in the book was wayyyyy more final as she chops a food off with an axe
This movie is a classic! They did a good job with this adaptation. I read how there is so much more crazy stuff that happened in the book that the movie didn’t cover as well.
