Fact's
In the book, Annie was even worse. When she hobbled him in the book, she cut off his foot with an axe and then cauterized the wound with a blowtorch. The 'E' key broke on the typewriter and when Paul complained she took off his thumb with an electric carving knife. And the scene where she killed the law enforcement officer, she came up behind him and stabbed with a cross she had put on her cows' grave. As he was crawling back to his car to get help, she ran over his head with a riding lawnmower. They obviously had to tone her down a bit for the movie.
I also heard the Jurassic Park novel was extremely graphic so they had to tone it down as well making the movie
@@Gurra88 That they did. The violence in Crichton's novels was much more graphic & gory than even the most violent scenes in any of the Jurassic Park/World films. Dennis Nedry's death in the novel is particularly haunting since he did not actually die before the Dilophosaurus tried eating him.
Again, and it is not a cliche..... books are always better than the films. The true talent in a writer comes out and grabs you because they have more time to do it. That's why Game of Thrones done as a LONG Series was Great and Amazing..... until they ran out of book material.
@@danielhaas9612 For the most part I agree, though there are some exceptions (IMO). Who Framed Roger Rabbit is based on the book "Who Censored Roger Rabbit" and the movie is far superior. Another example I can think of is "Logan's Run". Maybe it's because I saw the movie before I read the book, but I was actually disappointed in the book after seeing the movie (they are quite different from each other as well). I would even say that Forrest Gump the movie was better than the book, though they are also quite different from each other. In the book sequel, Forrest says that Hollywood made a movie about his life and got "most of the details right but missed some spots". True.

Had it been an unknown book everyone would say the film was better.
This film would have it's own horde of fans who would probably hate the extreme violence in the book.
In retrospect, the hobbling doesn't make sense as he was getting around without his legs anyway, apart from her being vindictive. 😁

He was excellent as Santino "Sonny" Corleone, in The Godfather (1972). The first James Caan movie I ever watched was Rollerball (1975). I didn't watch the earlier 1972 movie "The Godfather" until years later.

One of Stephen King's inspirations for Misery was the reaction his fans had to his 1984 novel The Eyes of the Dragon. Many hardcore fans rejected The Eyes of the Dragon because it was an epic fantasy book, with virtually none of the horror that initially made his reputation. They were displeased that he veered off from his M. O.
Paul Sheldon feeling chained to the Misery books by his fans was a metaphor for King's feeling chained to horror fiction.
That's very interesting! I actually loved The Eyes of the Dragon. There have been rumors for some time that they are going to adapt that into a movie but I'll believe it when I see it. I hope they can get Frank Darabont to direct it because he has had amazing luck with Stephen King adaptations (The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, The Mist). Rob Reiner too, as he's done several with success (Misery and Stand By Me being the most notable).
Another big source of inspiration was Kings battle with drug addiction. Something that left him helpless and reliant on a terrible, all consuming, murdering monster.
It's also a metaphor for his cocaine addiction at the time.
@@MrHartApart He was high as balls directing "Maximum Overdrive" I don't care what anyone says i love the movie. Imagine a remake with the tech we have now days. if done right it could be a blast.
I love every Stephen King book and The Eyes of the Dragon is one of my favorites.
Kathy Bates also played the Unsinkable Molly Brown in the film Titanic. She was the one that gave her son's dress clothes to Jack.

Especially in a 60's car, no airbags or even soft interiors. Probably just a lap seat belt that you adjust by hand - assuming he was wearing it.
The hobbling scene is still one of the most disturbing things on film.
It's pure genius how the entire film is made and then that scene can freak people out more then more gruesome things seen in other movies

The actress for Misery played by Kathy Bates stars in another Stephen King movie called Dolores Claiborne. It’s another fantastic role for her and the story is really good.🙂

The book she bought from the store was the one he killed Misery. The one he burned was the book he had just written at the hotel before the accident. It was about the slum kids and Annie went off about the swearing. During the flashback scene with his agent he talked about how he wanted to get away from writing Misery and had killed her so he could do that.
That sounds like a bit of a better lead in IMHO.

I saw Kathy Bates a couple of months ago on a movie set. She is a very small gray haired lady now, but still has that lively look in her eyes. Great actress.
The "hobbling" scene is one of the most disturbing things I have ever seen on film. We all expect the camera to turn away at the last second like they always do, but it doesn't and that makes it SO much more powerful. (In the book she cuts one of his feet off at the ankle).
If you love Kathy Bates, as you should, check out Delores Claiborne too.
The filmmakers did an amazing job. These days, movies would just do quick cuts to props when they want to show gruesome injuries like that and it looks cheap and lazy. Here, the cuts are long enough and goes to what you want (or don't want) to see without losing any momentum. The cuts before set up all the camera angles and it is clear what is the focus for each camera. When the hammer swings down, the energy flowed from cut to cut like a single take with multiple cameras.

I was in college when the movie came out. When my group of friends & I went to see it, I had recently fractured my ankle and was on crutches and in a large removable boot cast (along with some good pain meds). My lower leg was all kinds of black, blue, green, yellow, and red like they made Sheldon’s legs. When she hobbled him, my ankle just throbbed with pain and I literally cringed in sympathetic agony!
The book was horror, but this is closer to suspense.
Seeing the injury wouldn't make it better and could affect the rating of the film.
The other thing is, what's a broken ankle look like? - in reality it is not very dramatic, not like a severe break of the arm where the bone sticks out.
Very disturbing indeed.

What's disturbing to this day is that Richard Farnsworth died by self-inflicted gunshot wound, while his character died by gunshot. R.I.P. to him and James Caan. ❤🌹🕯🙏🏽
It sounds like he was a happy guy most of his life. Just made a decision because he was in a lot of pain with no hope of recovery. Supposedly, he wouldn't have been physically able to shoot himself if he waited any longer.

Another claustrophobic thriller where the protagonist is confined inside a building is WAIT UNTIL DARK. With the lovely Audrey Hepburn. Through a series of events in the prologue, a doll ends up in a blind woman’s basement apartment. It is stuffed with heroin and three crooks want it. What starts as a hustle gradually evolved into a nail biting battle of wits. And there is a jump scare in the climax; makes your heart leap out of your chest like Misery.
A car crash like that where the car flips over definitely would cause leg fractures like that. Especially then, modern cars are built to break apart in a way that keeps the driver much safer than back then.
Also, the manuscript that was burned was not the book Misery died in, that was just released in stores. The book that was burned was an entirely new book that was a new story and features the profanity that so offended Annie.
Best Ellie, Michelle, Viki and Lia reaction yet. 48:16 is the sort of response every writer or filmmaker dreams about.
You wonderful ladies might not watch a scarier movie in October.

FUN FACT: In the book she's still alive after the scuffle. She drags herself towards the shed outside her house and dies frozen with her hand reaching for a chainsaw.
The movies for _The Shining_ and _Misery_ really did switch things up.
Dolores Claiborne is Kathy Bates' best film.
It's a film that flies under the radar & is not so well known, but it is truly fantastic & the entire cast is great in it. No weak spots.
Highly recommend for the channel.

James Caan was the son of German Immigrants, he got the black Belt in Karate, he played Football for the University of Michigan, he also was a Rodeo-Rider and his Nickname was "The Jewish Cowboy"!

Kathy Bates has appeared in most of the seasons of American horror story as well as a lot of movies like fried green tomatoes and titanic.

Remember his legs didn't just break in a 'fall'. It was a car crash, so your legs get broken by being banged around inside the car as it rolls over and crashes.
yea the ladies dont know much about what can happen in a fiery car crash, BUT they did point out a great mistake in the film. WT F didnt the Chief take a deputy at least to the house, but i guess thats the way the crappy nasty vile book was written
I personally believe she did that to his legs,while he was unconscious. It's why the camera pan on them was so long.

It was impressive that you noticed the penguin during the dinner/toast scene, but it was already facing the right way again, so Annie already knew that Paul had gotten out, and most likely knocked the glass over on purpose. Unless it was a mistake by the filmmakers, which I doubt.
4:44 Its a 1966 Mustang he crashed, one of the more dangerous cars to have an accident in. No crumple zone, a lap belt, no headrest, a dangerous steering wheel, a barely protected gas tank, a single hydraulic line for ALL the DRUM brakes, etc. He's lucky he didn't die.
Richard Farnsworth was amazing in this movie! Also check him out in the Canadian produced movie the grey fox... one the best cinematography movies ever made.

Lia is looking jacked! In a healthy way. Misery was a big hit, as it didn't stray too far into horror territory and there was a current of dark humour running through it. So even people who didn't like scary movies could handle it.

Stephen King at his best, writing a book about an author and his fans. So many great movies are based on his books. Carrie, The Shining, The Dead Zone, Firestarter, Cujo, Needful Things, Delores Clayborne (also staring Kathy Bates), Insomnia, The Green Mile, and Stand By Me are some of my favorites.
This movie was first released 32 years ago in theaters. And I was only 13 years old at the time when this movie was first released in theaters. And I really love all of your reactions to all of the movies. Because you guys are a lot of fun to watch movies with and you guys a so funny and so beautiful too.

My 10 year old was Annie Wilkes for Halloween. It's her favorite horror movie. We bought a broken cane at a thrift store and a pool noodle. I cut off a piece of pool noodle and painted it black and then we jabbed the cane into it to look like the hammer. I then bought her an outfit similar to the one she's wearing in the hobbling scene. 😊
