Carpenter is the master of making a low budget movie seem like it was made for 10x what it actually was .
Don't forget about Roger Corman.
If you have to work on a budget, he's the guy to do it ^^
Carpenter loves using the wide angle lens. It gives his film a great look.
That's true for Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, and Escape From New York. But this was hardly low budget.
Fun fact, the guy Arnie buys Christine from is old man Marley, the suspected southbend shovel slayer from Home Alone

The actors name is Roberts Blossom, he was a really good character actor.

The burning car sequence never ceases to impress me. The stunt man had to wear the full burn suit _and_ use his own oxygen tank because the flames consumed all the air inside the vehicle.
in fact,no. the prop guys sprayed a flammable substance on this car. Later (after the filming),a certain Martin Sanchez bought one of the stunt cars,and reused all the body panels of the burnt christine,they were in perfect condition
@@laurentdudouit2485 in fact, you’re both right. OP about the inside and you about the outside. In the DVD commentary he talks about how difficult it was to drive the car in those circumstances. Remember the windows were blacked out and it was shot at night on top of all that.
John Carpenter is truly a GOAT. His run from 79 to 94 was filled with all time classics.
'79? So Halloween (1978) doesn't count? Hm.
For me The Thing is my favourite movie of all time. The Fog and Escape from New York, Starman and Assault on Precent 13.

My favorite part of this movie, was not the car, but the complex and evolving relationship between the main character and his best friend that turns demented by the car, their interactions are really good personal drama in an otherwise horror action movie.
I read the book when I 8 or so and that's what stuck with me - the friendship. I got to the final words "RIP, Arnie. I love you, man." and started SOBBING.
You would really like the book then!
The films Stand By Me and Misery are worth checking out. Both directed by Rob Reiner and based on stories by Steven King❣️❣️❣️

You two should check out the original film version of "Carrie" (1976) directed by Brian DePalma. It would satisfy Tom's interest in horror films with a cult following and Shaun's interest in Oscar Calibur films because both Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.

My favorite outta the Stephen King Universe of the movies
When we were younger and were in a garage someone would whisper “Christine”. We would run around screaming.
Say "Christine" five times into the driver's side mirror and summon Bumble Bee
I'm 68 yrs. old and still run around the garage screaming (usually because of a spider.)
His early novels like this and Carrie really do well showing you how High School was. Steven King wrote about HS so well because he was a HS teacher when he wrote Carrie. He was actually my Dad's English teacher.

The Cristine theme, along with the songs chosen for this Movie were brilliant... especially the ending when the car plays Rock & Roll is here to stay as it's being destroyed.

This video sums up why I like these guys' reactions so much. They go into each film giving it a fair chance and accept it on its own terms. They surely knew going into this they weren't going to get a masterpiece of a killer car movie; yet they didn't make fun of everything, they credited the film where it deserved it, talked about their reservations, and tried to rate it as fairly as possible.

I’ve always said that for a musician, John Carpenter is also one hell of a director.
Check out The Dead Zone, another Stephen King movie from the same year. It’s directed by David Cronenberg and starring Christopher Walken and Martin Sheen. It’s one of the best King adaptations ever.👍

I hate being that guy, but while I personally enjoy this movie quite a bit, the book is a really fantastic story about the challenges and losses of teenage years.
I read this book when I was in middle school. You're absolutely right about the story. It's much too challenging to convey this story in a 90min movie. This was the second novel I read by Stephen King when I was a kid. My first was Salem's Lot when I was 10. I was too young to appreciate that novel in it's entirety back then but it scared me so thoroughly that I slept with the lights on all summer and never opened my shades at night.
Agreed. Both are good, but it's always difficult to shrink a Stephen King book into a movie, even two movies like they did with It.

More than 20 Plymouths were used to film the movie. Belvederes, Savoys and Fury models were used during the filming process. All were painted red and given matching interiors.
And of course, most of them were destroyed in the process. A few survived in good condition. Here's an auction for one that's left. Asking price 275K. Comes with proof that it was an actual Christine car, not just a customized clone.

In 1983 they were probably just considered "old cars" but today they are genuine classics and the only thing I dislike about this movie (my favourite Stephen King movie) is the amount of gorgeous cars that got wrecked.
Yes. That's true in a number of movies, but this one was somewhat excessive.
My first car was a 1958 Dodge Coronet. Vaguely like the corresponding Plymouth models, but not identical. All great cars.
@@DougRayPhillips I know nothing of American cars, other than the fact they were beautiful up until around the 80's, but I do know two models of classic Plymouth. The Baracuda, named after a big American fish and the Hemicuda, which I believe was a Baracuda but it had 8 of something, 8 cylinders or something - hence the 'hemi' prefixed to cuda.
I have no idea where this trivia stems from but I'm glad I get to use it today 😆
@@krashd Yes, old cars were beautiful. Pretty much any American high-performance car, prior to the 1973 oil embargo, was 8 cylinders. "Hemi" was short for "hemispherical combustion chamber." A special engine design for extra performance.
In the 2004 movie "Highwaymen" (not to be confused with other movies of the same name), character Rennie Cray (Jim Caviezel) drives a 1968 Barracuda Super Stock Hemi, and uses it to chase down the psycho killer who murdered Cray's wife and other women and who likes to run people over with his 1972 Cadillac Eldorado. You might want to give it a watch.

@@Taramw32 Nice!!! ...well, you know what I mean. I'll watch it again myself if nobody seems to want to post a reaction for it. I like these kinds of videos so that I can watch a "first timer" and I can get my memories of the movie to awaken again without having to literally buy it. Netflix used to have all these older great movies to watch, but they've tossed them away to promote their own stuff. Some of it is pretty ok - but that's not why originally subscribed. Hulu is getting better, but it's still just their own content they are pushing. Where the hell can you just turn on and watch Duel, or The Keep, or The Fog anymore? I feel like I live vicariously through these 'reaction' videos that you even have to be a Patreon contributor to fully appreciate (which I will never be). Well, that was a rant. Sorry, I thought you might get that so I just went for it.👍😀
Well now you need to watch Duel. It’s one of Steven Spielberg’s first movies and also involves a “vehicle”.

I saw this when I was really young on television and it forever burned (ha!) the image into my brain of Christine driving towards the camera on fire. Just iconic.
John Carpenter is the master of horror and thriller. This flick gives us the scare factor in the 80s. That car is so gorgeous but even deadly.

I've always loved this movie. My friends and I loved the scene where Arnie tells Mr.Darnell that "he'd think about the offer" and Mr Darnell says " don't think about it too long or I'll throw you out on your f-en ass" we still say that line all the time. I love this movie. They recored the scene where Christine repairs itself was filmed backwards. Watch Into The Mouth of Madness. John did a great job with this one too. Mouth isn’t Stephen King but it feels like one.

Roberts Blossom, the actor playing the old guy who sells Christine to the kid, is also the old man with the snow shovel in Home Alone.
From what I remember it follows the book relatively close, it feels like the same story. It is a quite thick book though, so the movie still glosses over stuff, including what makes Christine live.
About the red car among all the white ones: Christine is a 1958 plymouth fury, and that year they only came in white, but the owner put in some kind of special order for a red one.

@@santiagohardy2728 Basically, it's haunted by the original owner, LeBay. You could say that he loved the car so much he "sacrificed" his wife and daughter to it to give it life. So while it's haunted by a ghost sometimes, it's also has a mind of its own because the deaths and love for the car

One of my favorite Stephen King book adaptations. I believe Carpenter effectively created a tense atmosphere of Terror when Christine was on her Rampages. The visual of that flaming car backing out of the garage and chasing buddy down is iconic.
For the next Carpenter, try either The Fog or Prince Of Darkness.
For Stephen King, I still think the best King movie is The Dead Zone - directed by David Cronenberg

For John Carpenter recommendations, I'd say They Live and Starman. They Live has grown a cult following over the years (well deserved!) and Starman is probably one of his most under-appreciated movies. Great performance by Jeff Bridges.
Rose red might be a good watch. It's another Stephen King adaptation. Scared the absolute hell outta me when I was younger.
Background on Christine's unusual color: Her first owner, Roland LeBay was said to have been a very rich, powerful, and cruel man. As Darnell put it in a remark in the movie "You could've poured boiling water down his throat and he would've ****ed icecubes". All other Furys of that year were that beige color. Christine was a custom ordered vehicle by Roland.
"God I hate rock n' roll." Great ending line. This movie had some shortcomings, especially compared to the book. But that scene with Christine driving on fire at night was worth the price of admission alone.

It's about as scary as you can get with the concept of a killer car. I still really like it. It's fun and cool and the use of music to speak for the car is awesome.
It's one of them rare films that I think is actually better than the book because having the car be "alive" itself, and not simply possessed by an entity is scarier to me. Definitely one of my favourite Carpenter films of all time not far behind from Halloween.
The Fog. Gotta watch The Fog. If you want atmosphere and pace and a sense of dread. And watch it in the dark. Nightvision lads. Nightvision.
The scenery and cinematography is amazing in The Fog.
My buddy and I basically grew up with this movie. I'd spend the weekend sleeping over at his house when we were kids and we'd watch the Vhs of Christine. I've seen this more times than I can count. It's a really goofy premise, but I love watching Arnie's descent into madness. Very good acting.
Now that you've seen Christine you should check out the other film called The Car (1977) and see which killer car movie you like better.

Duel by Stephen Spielberg is great, too
One of the more underrated and unappreciated of the film adaptations of King's work. John Carpenter is a the top of his game here, and no one else could have played Arnie Cunningham better then Keith Gordon.
This movie is a PERFECT GEM of an 80's good time.
It's not as clear in the movie but it's heavily implied in the novel that Arnie gets possessed by Roland Lebay's spirit, the previous owner of Christine. That's why he starts using phrases that his brother did, his attire changes and Arnie's personality completely vanishes.
Omg I'm so happy you reviewed this gem of a John Carpenter film. I watched this at an old theater for the first time a few years ago and was in love with the practical effects and the beautifully menacing score and the insane story.
I’ve just noticed that the guy who saves the girlfriend from ‘Christine’ is wearing ‘The Big Lebowski’ cardigan.

Defiantly Big Trouble in Little China. It's so unique love it or hate it and there are many in both camps oen thing most people will agree with is, there is nothing else quite like it.

one of my favourite movies since seeing this on my old 14" tv back in the 80s in my bedroom, loved it ever since, also the original Assault on Precinct 13 1976 another great classic
If you want more Stephen King, especially obscure, you can’t lose with the TV movie “Salem’s Lot”. It was directed in the 1970s by the guy who did “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and is surprisingly effective.
YES. Still can't watch it without getting creeped out, and James Mason is always worth watching. But you want the 1979 3hr20min mini-series, not the movie version, and not the remake or the sequel. Based on King's second best-seller which is still one of his better novels.
Y'all gotta watch Maximum Overdrive. Another Stephen King movie. I think it's the only movie he directed.

That actor - the virgin guy with glasses - is in a very good comedy film called Back To School from the 80s starring Rodney Dangerfield. I had forgotten that he was also in Christine. You guys really should do more comedies. There are a lot of great ones from the 80s - that are very 80s. You'd enjoy them.

It truly defies belief that these effects of the car repairing itself were done in 1983. Even knowing it was basically just a balloon, I fully buy what I'm seeing.
I loved how this was movie was done with practical effects.

I have always loved the music and score for this movie, it is so 80s horror, Pet Semetary and Silver Bullet also has some cool 80 horror music (both Stephen King movies)

The novel has a verse from different rock songs to set the mood for each chapter. John Carpenter did a great job of working that into the movie.

The book is told as Dennis is explaining the story four years after the fact.
There's a youtube channel I forgot the name of him. His entire channel reviews the rare sub horror genre of Christine: "Killer Car movie reviews." Or something like that. Quite interesting takes on movies from Duel, The Car, Wheels of Terror, Maximum Overdrive, and Trucks.

I only just saw this movie for the first time in 2020 and two things about it immediately stood out to me. The first thing was how GOOD it looked. It might be simple but the cinematography & lighting was really well done, and served as a good reminder to me about why it's still important to shoot movies on film. The second thing I noticed was some of the dialogue. I haven't seen everything, but this is one of the earliest movies I've seen that has teenagers talking like they really do; like small adults.

The car is a 58 Plymouth Fury. I have a 59 Plymouth Savoy, the business version of the Fury. The filmmakers scoured the country and got all the Fury vehicles they could find. Then they got Belvederes and Savoys (which are similar vehicles built on the Fury platform) and painted them to look like the Fury. There are only a very few 58 Furies left. The story is based on a 55 Dodge police car that was in the northeast part of the U.S.
Multiple policemen who used the car committed suicide. The doors would fly open when driving down the road. The car was deemed cursed. It was later owned by a lady who was a witch. It was cut up and taken to different junkyards. I seem to remember that someone purchased all the pieces and restored it.
They used between 18-22 cars to play Christine. Most of them were used for parts because it was such a rare car. The car was a 1958 Plymouth. Specifically, Christine is supposed to be a 1958 Plymouth Fury, but those only came in Buckskin Beige with gold trim. The movie used all manor of 1958 and 1957 Plymouths to play the part, Savoy's, Plaza's, though most were Belvedere's, since the side trim was the main difference between them.
The opening scene is set to imply she was a special order car, where the customer paid extra for custom options.
Of the cars used in the movie, only 2 are known to survive. John Carpenter himself kept one of the hero cars, and a fan actually managed to save one of the stunt cars and restore it (oddly enough, the only stunt car to have a manual transmission.)
Others have already mentioned the 70s southwest set The Car starring Thanos' father James Brolin. It's where the design of Bender from the werecar episode of Futurama originates.

One of my all time favorites. I live in Wichita,Kansas. Their a guy here who owns one of the cars from the movie. It’s the one on the assembly line in the beginning. He said the door lock knobs that Lee was trying to pull up to unlock the door when she was choking were added to the cars. The doors actually lock by pushing the floor handle down.

Romero's "The Dark Half" and the TV Mini Series "Salem's Lot" (Tobe Hooper), "The Stand" (1994) and "Storm of the Century" are some of the greatest Stephen King adaptations.

11:06 The iconography here- red jacket & t-shirt and father confronting son at the staircase- is a direct homage to a scene from Rebel Without a Cause(1955) which is considered to be one of the first films to be realistically centered around the lives of the American teenager.
