One thing about watching movies in the 80's, is that most of the time you could go to one-room classic theaters that had an opera-house style look and feel. The entire process including the ticket booth and lobby and trailers and matinee added to the vibe. There were very few ways for the movie to be spoiled as well, mostly you knew a vague rumor about it or who was the main star. Then you got hit with an original experience. The movie was much more than a product to click and consume.
When this movie came out, we had a theater like that in my town. All movie showing were events, and the atmosphere of the theater was as much a part of the experience as the movie. Nothing like that now with the multiplexes. I miss it.
The library scene was filmed at the New York Public Library on 5th Avenue. Rare books and special research rooms are kept there. The university is filmed on the Columbia University campus. The refurbished firehouse is a real working firehouse located in Tribeca in lower Manhattan. The scene at the Tavern on the Green restaurant is a joke about New Yorkers ignoring weird activity and continuing about their business. The restaurant is on Central Park West near 65th Street.
I am obligated under an unwritten and imaginary contract stipulating a list of movies for which I am required to see anybody's first time reaction to watching them... Ghostbusters being one of these. And so, I am here. 🍿
Erica, people ignoring Louis being attacked by the dog is a joke on the New Yorkers, about how they supposedly don't care about other people and their problems.
Ghostbusters is a perfect mix of comedy and horror, I think the sfx has held up pretty well for a movie from the 80s. I can always appreciate our cousins from the north watching the classics .
Oh, Canada (😉) has its mark on this movie as well. Dan Aykroyd is from Ottowa, Rick Moranis is from Toronto, producer Joe Medjuck is from New Brunswick, director Ivan Reitman was born in Slovokia, but grew up in Toronto, and Harold Ramis was born in Chicago, but worked on SCTV in Canada.

I was like 6 or 7 the first time I ever saw this movie. I remember because it was the first movie my family ever watched on VHS. It was probably 1986 and not many people had a VCR then, so when you rented a movie you could rent a VCR to hook to your tv to watch it 😂
The shelf with books that falls in the library at the beginning after it was not part of the script. It really went down and the actors' reaction was genuine.
This movie is comedy partially based on two earlier horror films: "The Exorcist" (a classic), and "Poltergeist." If "Jaws" was the first summer blockbuster film, "The Exorcist" may have been the first blockbuster for the post-Christmas break. People were lined up around the block to see it. Other classic movies from this era you should hit - with actors from "Ghostbusters" - are "Alien," "Trading Places," and "Groundhog Day."
when the zuul dog went after louis (keymaster) it went into him and possessed him when he fell at the restaurant (former tavern on the green; sadly it shut down) the people in the apartment definitely saw it and the people downstairs talk about it.
I remember watching this movie 🎥 in cinema back in 1984 and immediately loved it. My brother who watched it with his friends loved it so much that he bought a cassette tape of Ghostbusters soundtrack which included this song, songs by other artists heard in the movie and the beautiful musical instrumental arrangement scored by Elmer Bernstein. Unfortunately both the mentioned audio cassette and the video tapes that I watched on TV with my friends a year later were pirated copies as we were too young to buy the originals. The video tape was rented by one of my friends’ cousin who loved it so much that he made an illegal copy of it then in turn rented out to me. Pretty slick the cousin. However I enjoyed both experiences back in the ‘80s. Such were the good ole times😅
One of my favorite funny moments in this movie: Egon: Well, let’s say this Twinkie represents the normal amount of psychokinetic energy in the New York area. According to this morning’s sample, it would be a Twinkie…35 feet long weighing approximately 600 pounds. Ray coughs in surprise- Winston: That's a BIG Twinkie 😆😆🤣🤣
"THey have merch." You wouldn't believe how much merch they had. T shirts, lunch boxes.... SOOOOO many people were Ghostbusters for Halloween that year. The song and the music video were all over the radio and MTV. Movie theme songs were almost a requirement in the 80s. That seems to have gone away since the late 90s. Ghostbusters is not a cult classic... it was a HUGE blockbuster hit right out of the gate.

Welcome to the club. As the dock worker says in part 2, "better late than never". And yeah, the Ghostbusters were the most popular people in the world for a while. The real world merchandising was on everything. There was even like sundaes with "slimer slime" that tasted like bubblegum, "slimer hi-C", the cartoon, all sorts of toys, the NES game, even a cereal. And of course the other movies and what they brought. And especially the song and its music video (if you haven't seen the music video check it out). Part 2 shows that the song is canon. Part 3 features one of the ghosts from the cartoon (hinting that some parts of the cartoon might be canon). Part 4 shows that the merchandising is canon. The franchise still has legions of fans, across multiple generations.
Since the money backing their venture belonged to Ray, the guys basically had no choice but to accept the firehouse as the base for their operations. Ray had the final say, and he loved it.
Likely, Egon had the place picked out, and it's obvious that he and Peter were trying to negotiate a lower price. They knew that the firehouse would be the place, but didn't want to have Ray paying full price for it. Which, Ray sabotages with his enthusiasm.

Hi Erica! I've watched your reactions to Jaws and Ghostbusters twice now and have subscribed. Didn't watch your first video as I've never seen the movie. I like the way you present your reactions and am looking forward to your future videos. Of course I have a long list of movies I hope you will watch from before you were born but won't bombard you with them just yet... Yes, I'm wonderful. I don't follow many who do reactions as so many are just completely over the top. Popcorn in bed, Jen Murray, (both Canadians) Bunnytailsreacts (American), Centane (Scandanavia) and MovieJoob (Australian) are the five I mostly watch. They are empathetic, thoughtful and at times very funny. You fit right in there. Good luck with your channel! xx
The green eating ghost is known as Slimer. He became a staple of the movies and the cartoon show _The Real Ghostbusters_ (the first season of which was actually very well-written). Zuul and Vinz Clortho were from the days of ancient Sumeria, and Vinz was likely a former human priest. So Zuul wearing colorful robes in mortal form instead of modern clothes would feel more natural to them; they were probably a dress or drapery that Zuul re-cut into robes. Zuul was also in Dana's body and felt the attraction to Peter that she did, but being an immortal from pre-Antiquity, they didn't feel inclined to be modest.
Warms my heart to see young people going back to watch the classics and still enjoying them! Gotta watch GB 2, Afterlife, and Frozen Empire now. 40 years of Ghostbusters!
The movie is still fun to this day. I enjoyed the movies, cartoons, video games and comics. There is tons you can do with the franchise. I hope it continues to go on.
As someone who was there, Ghostbusters was huge with the kids. I won a radio station contest in 1989 when I was a kid so I got free tickets to see Ghostbusters 2 in the theater on opening day. I was a massive fan and am so happy that my little boy loves Ghostbusters as much as his dad.
Ghostbusters 2 came out after the cartoon had been on for years and they actually made it with kid appeal in mind. (A major reason why it's not very good...) I was 8 when I saw the original in a theater, and loved it, but I also begged to stay and finish Blade Runner in a theater when my parents wanted to walk out.
The original & best, still holds up IMO. The background stuff is just as fascinating. John Belushi was originally supposed to be Peter Venkman, but he ODed & died, so the part was re-written for Murray. Slimer is said to be something of an ode to the kinds of characters Belushi tended to play. Eddie Murphy was supposed to be Winston, but had scheduling conflicts (he was working on Beverly Hills Cop). John Candy was supposed to get the part that Rick Moranis wound up getting, but wanted to play the part as a Frenchman or German for some reason. If I could visit alternate Earths, I'd like to visit the one where John Belushi lived to play the role of Venkman. I can almost guarantee that the energy of the movie would be different. Slimer either wouldn't be in the movie at all or would've been re-written.
As maybe somewhat on a spectre guy, the biggest horror for me in the movie is seeing those library cards flying all over the place 😮 It would take FOREVER to reorganize them! 😅
Peter's questions to Alice the librarian were actually legitimate in checking to see that she wasn't having a psychotic break. He asked about family history, drug use, and if she was experiencing any hormonal fluctuations (there's a reason two of the spikes in mental illness are puberty and menopause/andropause). When studying the Paranormal the first thing you should try to do is rule out the natural explanations. Psychosis being a natural explanation Also the experiment Peter was running isn't even close to the most unethical experiment regarding Operant Conditioning
The Tavern on the green scene with the terror dog and Louis i feel like goes over a lot of peoples heads but i think its meant to be a bunch of rich people that don't care that he got attacked🤣
Also, it’s NYC. Someone running up, banging on the windows while ranting and raving for no evident reason probably wouldn’t be too uncommon. “Oh, another one.”
John Belushi was supposed to be in this movie before he died . Can you imagine how funny he would have been as a Ghostbuster. Great movie I remember seeing it in the theater when I was a kid
I saw this in the cinema when it came out, I was quite little and missed some of the more adult references. There was a sequel in which the Ghostbusters have fallen out of favour until another crisis occurs. There was an 'alternate universe' film with female Ghostbusters. Then 'Afterlife' which has the next generation facing Gozer again. Many of the characters look quite different in the cartoon, but Janine seems to have based her look in 'Ghostbusters II' on the cartoon, even though it is the same actor.
Definately try to cut the videos a bit longer especially the second halfs of the reactions are a bit rushed :) Keep it up! Always nice to see younger generation reacting to these cinema gems. "They don't make them like they used to" is very true here...

The phone call lady-"We got one!"-is the gran in "Young Sheldon"🎩
G'day Ms Erica , i recently found your channel thank you for wide eyed approach to the movies very refreshing and cool 😎
(A major reason why it's not very good...)
I was 8 when I saw the original in a theater, and loved it, but I also begged to stay and finish Blade Runner in a theater when my parents wanted to walk out.
I really like your reactions. Very nice! Ever seen The Big Lebowski? If not, that's my suggestion!
Every single scene a memorable line or exchange. “You only have seventy-five more to go”
Great movies for your first day as a reactor, Keep going 😁
As maybe somewhat on a spectre guy, the biggest horror for me in the movie is seeing those library cards flying all over the place 😮 It would take FOREVER to reorganize them! 😅
Hi 🤗 thank you for your RUclips channel, thanks for your company - it's nice to watch-a-long movies with you 🍿🎥🍿
This has always been a standard movie in my collection. I've owned it in nearly every medium it was printed in, including BetaMax and LaserDisc.
Great reaction!! Glad you enjoyed it!! If you want to try another classic, then try 'The Terminator - 1984'.
2nded The Terminator always gets a great reaction.
Correction: _The Terminator_ gets two great reactions, because T2 is sure to follow.
This is one of the best movie scores. If you watch other Elmer Bernstein movies you can kinda hear some motifs that appear in other movies.
She was right about the ghost in the hotel not being a human.
You have just witnessed my all time favorite movie. You should watch Ghostbusters II, Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
I loved your reaction! Subscribed!
First time I ever noticed the Stay Puft marshmallows on Dana's counter. I was always too busy watching the eggs.
1:34 "5 bucks!"
I love this series of movies, Wonderful reaction to an amazing classic movie!! 🙂❤
Well, you picked up a subscriber. Keep it up.
Great reaction! This was my favorite movie as a kid. 😊
Great reactions to your movies! Very expressive, you could have been a great actor. I vote for Rudy, Up or Breakfast Club.
The squeezy thingy is a real monitor to measure gas leaks.
The vehicle they drive is a 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor Ambulance. The license plate ECTO-1 was for the slimy substance ectoplasm.
Great reaction ❤️
I can't wait to see you react to a real scary movie 😂, plz add the classic "Exorcist" to list ma'am
Super great reaction. Thanks.
Psychosis being a natural explanation
Also the experiment Peter was running isn't even close to the most unethical experiment regarding Operant Conditioning
I don't think he was running an actual experiment, more like trying to hook up with the female student.
5 bucks was alot of money back in the day
The Tavern on the green scene with the terror dog and Louis i feel like goes over a lot of peoples heads but i think its meant to be a bunch of rich people that don't care that he got attacked🤣
16:30 Thank you for calling the Gargoyle what it is - and certainly not a dog.
"I love this plan! I'm excited to be a part of jt!" I still quote that, lol
That bookshelf wasn’t supposed to fall,it happened during the take and they went with it
