    As for your question at the end, there is no CGI in this movie. CGI was extremely primitive in 1984 and couldn’t make anything that looked “real.” The Terminator endoskeleton was done with stop-motion and puppetry by the legendary Stan Winston.

    The attention to detail for a low budget film is one of the things that makes this movie special. Kyle tells Sarah he fell in love with her from a picture, which might seem a little crazy. He said that she seemed sad and he always wondered what she was thinking about in the photo. At the end we learn she was thinking about him and she was sad because he was dead.

      @@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 Terminator 1 is just such a unique film in general.
      It's horror, action, romance, comedy, it has a little bit of everything. I think the low budget really did it favors there, because these people feel so real. They're just men and women on their 9-5, living lives that they have no idea are about to change forever because of reasons they have no possible way of knowing.
      Ed Traxler and his entire department were massacred without ever knowing why. They had no idea what hit them, why the T-800 wanted Sarah, or that Reese was telling the truth. Ginger and Matt died for the sole crime of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
      Both Reese and Sarah are effectively pawns of a fate they can't control, only attempt to survive and see through. It wasn't until T2 that the very notion of changing humanity's destiny was considered possible, as Reese admits he doesn't know enough about time travel to do anything meaningful.

    I've always thought that the stop-motion at the end actually suited the Terminator perfectly. It's a machine; it's damaged; the slight herky-jerky nature of the animation is completely in line with how something like that WOULD be moving, and, I agree, definitely makes it creepier.

  • @johnplaysgames3120
    @johnplaysgames3120 4 месяца назад +19

    Erica, this is by far one of my favorite reactions to this movie because you're the first reactor I've seen go into it with no prior knowledge about the story or the fact that Arnie is playing a cyborg. You experienced the movie the way it's meant to be experienced, with the reveals being actual reveals and not just pop-culture moments you've seen in memes and were waiting for, and that was awesome to see. Such a pure reaction!
    And yeah, that was stop-motion animation on the cyborg endoskeleton at the end. I'm sure there are some movie purists who would disagree with me, but that's one of those sequences I kind of wish James Cameron would go back and smooth out with some CG or something (as well as clean up the green screen edges in the shot where Kyle and Sarah are trying to shut the factory door on the endoskeleton, and, in the scene where he's removing his eye, maybe do some deep-fakery with the fake Arnold head to make it look less like a fake Arnold head). Even back then, those FX looked a little janky. I mean, it's not like people of the '80s looked at stop-motion animation or animatronic heads and were fooled; we just had to accept that that was the best that could be done at the time (and on that small budget), suspend our disbelief, and enjoy the story that was being told despite the obvious models or herky jerky animations.
    Unfortunately, for a lot of younger viewers who grew up with CG, those moments can break immersion at an otherwise intense part of the story by reminding you of the artifice of it all. It always kind of sucks when you see Sarah running for her life from this thing that won't stop no matter how much you damage it, Kyle is injured, the future of humanity is hanging in the balance, and a reactor starts giggling and making jokes because the stop motion animation looks a little goofy.
    That being said, I do appreciate that you take movies for what they are and when they were from and just let yourself be immersed in the story instead of being distracted by stuff like that. There was one reaction channel I stopped watching because, every time they watched an older movie, they would spend half the running time ignoring the story and just laughing at how old or bad the FX looked. If you made a drinking game out of every time the reactor said, "Omg, it's SO OLD!" you'd be stumbling around your house halfway through the movie. I didn't take it personally or anything -- older FX are obvs jankier because they're older FX and, y'know, I didn't make 'em -- but, at a certain point, I was like, "Yeah, we get it, the movie's old. But what do you think about the story? What do you think about the acting? What did you think about that amazing line of dialogue (the one you were cracking a joke over the top of)? What do you think about this movie that we all loved and has us watching reaction channels so we can see other people experience it for the first time?"
    Anyway, I'm hoping you decide to react to Terminator 2 as well. It's one of the best sequels ever made, and one of the few times where a sequel may actually be better than the first movie ("Alien" and "Aliens" being another example). Thanks to the success of the relatively low budget Terminator movie, James Cameron got a much bigger budget for T2 and you definitely see it on the screen. Plus, it's just a really nice bookend to the story of the first movie. I think you'll really enjoy it.

    My favorite bit of lore that they dont actually mention in the movie really is that since the terminator needs actual flesh to blend in (and travel through time) the terminators have real human teeth, and still has them after all the other flesh gets burned away at the end of the movie. That tidbit freaks me out more than anything else in the movie lol.
    The final scene once the flesh ia gone is stop motion composite shots. They did build a practical terminator puppet which is why it looks so good.

    • @Cau_No
      @Cau_No 4 месяца назад

      I think the teeth might be just steel underneath with a white cover that burned away with the skin at the end - would make more sense.
      As long as they keep their mouth shut, everything inside is still covered by flesh for the time portal.

    It was so much fun to watch your reactions, through you, it made me feel like it was my first time watching. Terminator 2 is one of the rare sequels that's at least as good if not better than the first one so I do hope you give it a watch!
    I was a teenager when this movie came out and it blew us all away with the special effects, all created out of models and latex, not CGI back then. I still love it after I don't know how many times I watched.

    Anyway cheers from UK, 'i'll be back' for the next one 👍

    "What happened to his eyebrows?"
    They got burnt off when he ran through the fire in the alley behind the nightclub.
    Arnold was actually really nervous about shaving them off. He even made James Cameron take out insurance on them so he could get compensated just in case they didn't grow back.

    An awesome reaction. One of the few who clearly knew nothing about the movie going into it. I first aw this movie on my 12th birthday on 1986 and it immediately became my favorate movie. It will always hold a special place in my heart. T2 is definately worth the watch. And regardless of what others say, T3 and T4 are also worthy. The two after that are (in my oppinion, not as needed), but 1-4 are all fun in their way. (5 and 6 start playing with alternate timelines which IMO do not flow as well).

    You know you're old when your favorite movies from your childhood feature technology today's viewers haven't seen before (tape answering machines). Btw, you picked up on "You're talking to a machine." comment on the answering machine and I'd never thought about that connecting to the overall theme of machines taking over.

    Very happy that you watched and reacted to this. Easily my favorite movie of all time!
    I remember watching and enjoying this movie for the first time wayyyyy back when! I was only four or five, I think when I first watched this. My dad had me watch it with him! xD hahaha, it SCARED me so much! hahahaha, but I loved it back then just as much as I do now. :)
    Whenever you get to watch Terminator 2, be ready for an amazing time! It's so much fun for me. This one's an excellent movie because it adds that terror element to it, the second has a whole lot less of that but plenty more emotional draw. As a kid, the second ruled supreme for me but this one here became my favorite after I matured a good bit.

    Great reaction, Erica! 👍😊 Thank you for choosing to watch this first installment of the Terminator franchise. I hope you react to all of them, because I think it is an amazing storyline. I would like to suggest that you try not to anticipate the plot of each of the sequels because time travel is involved, so whenever the past is changed it alters the future. Just remember John's message to Sarah, "The future is not set." Looking forward to your reaction to Terminator 2! You're going to love it even more, guaranteed! 🤗

    This is Arnold's one true villain role, essentially a movie monster. He was chilling and cool at the same time, a literal killing machine and he acted it so well.
    Also, the Terminator loses his eyebrows when Reece blows up the gas tank of the car to slow him down and he runs through the fire. I like that because he looks even more unnatural.
