Part of the genius of this movie was the fact that they used three completely unknown actors with ZERO public profile, and their characters in the movie have the same names as their real-life counterparts. So when the viral online marketing campaign launched, it looked like the movie was featuring three REAL college kids no one had ever heard of - which made it seem all the more convincing, and led audiences to wonder if maybe the footage was genuine.

Back when this movie was aired, they try to make this whole thing a real deal, for marketing. They put up a website about the Blair Witch, and make Missing posters for Heather, Josh and Mike. A whole lot of people had believed that this movie was a true story

"The Blair Witch Project movie budget was initially between $35,000 and $60,000 with an eventual worldwide box office of just over $248 million. Nearly 25 years later, The Blair Witch Project budget and profit return have kept the film as one of the most profitable horror flicks ever.

So the part where Heather, Josh, and Mike run out of their tent and into the woods screaming is actually unscripted; they genuinely had no idea it was the film crew hitting against their tent. When Heather was screaming "WTF IS THAT?!" she was seeing one of the crew members dressed in all white but unfortunately it wasn't captured on camera and they never redid the take.

*fortunately. all the beauty of this movie is in what isn't shown, imo. It lets the power of the imagination take over.

This movie changed cinema. Yes, there was a movie before this that was found footage, but this was the game changer. The hype behind this movie, the genius marketing that had this sold as a true story with (early internet) online missing posters etc. it was an early example of viral marketing etc. it’s an extremely effective movie, the way it was shot was so unique (when you hear how this was done, it’s very clever). They genuinely unnerved the actors and messed with them at a time where this kind of thing was unheard of really. Love it or hate it, it’s presence is still very much felt today. I loved it when I saw it back in 99, still do now.

There was more than one found footage film shot before this one, there were 13. Each of them taught this team of directors something different about how to create true terror. 85% of this film is genuine. They were given a map, they were handed the cameras and food and told to go film a documentary. The noises at night were caused by the directors- the cast was not aware. Mike was instructed to remove the map however possible- the other two were not aware. Josh was taken by the directors- the other two were not aware. They also made a point to not meet the actors and not let them meet each-other until the first day of filming, everything had to feel genuine. Eventually they presented themselves in the woods with Josh, and instructed them on how they needed the final scene shot. The best part was, in the basement the camera was supposed to fall more to the right- the witch was standing behind him. They reviewed the first take, and decided the horror was in the fact that you couldn’t see her. I will say this, had they shown her at the end, i don’t think we’d be watching this film today. The directors have credited, many times, all 13 directors that came before them, and this cast. This poor cast has done some little things since, but having your first film consist of two guys scaring the crap out of you kind of pushed them away from the industry.

I saw it on HBO when I was a kid. I was suckered in by the marketing and for some reason thought it was actually found footage when I watched it. I have bad memory issues about my childhood but I can remember the exact details of that night down to the texture and pattern of the comforter i was hiding under because the movie scared me to the point of fight or flight lol. I never went to sleep and I kept he lights on, i almost wet the bed because I didn't want to move. Not much has affected me like that since.

I woke up at about 2am one night in 2002 and saw this playing on the movie channel on my TV. I thought it was some random documentary or something. I ended watching the last half of the movie and was caught so off guard by the horror and legitimately thought I just watched people die

Gotta say, man. It's REALLY refreshing to see someone who doesn't completely hate Heather. Like obviously she's at fault for a lot of it but you'd think she was the witch with how some people talk about her.

What's wild is that given that she got them to the first spot and said her favorite thing to do on Sundays is hike in the woods there's literally zero reason to assume she couldn't read the map - yet people tend to assume she couldn't read shit. Might be bc the guys kinda gang up on her but that's not reason enough, especially when the one we know for a fact is useless direction-wise is the one that made sure they couldn't use directions at all... and that's not Heather lmao

The beginning was definitely set up for the mystery of what could be out in the woods and also the ending. The local men talk about how the serial killer (most likely influenced by the Blair Witch) would make one kid stand in the corner while he killed the other child. Then he would kill that child too. That’s what happens to Mike and Heather in the last scene.
To me it was super chilling to remember that piece of lore and basically watch them die in the same way.
Totally agree that the screaming and acting felt very authentic especially the ending, even if some of the improvised dialog in other scenes felt a little awkward. I still find this to be one of the most effective found footage horror movies ever.

  • @robovike

The marketing and promotion of this film was on another new level, leveraging existing media channels to promote this as a "real found footage" documentary of an undertaking to reveal a supernatural aspect to a local age-old mystery. I would say that the campaign outpaced the actual movie.

This movie creeped me out in so many ways. On the way home from the theater with my ex he got out at a gas station and I was alone. It was so quiet in the car and his seat belt snapped back- lord I jumped so high! 😂

  • @anunnacy
    @anunnacy 10 месяцев назад +5

19:38 The early parts of the movie were mostly to give you the context about the legends (so you think about it later and wonder if the witch is actually real or not). Also there is one guy they interview in the beginning who talks about the kids back then and what happened to them, if you re-watch that part, then the last scene of the movie is even creepier. ^^
Also yes, the movie is known to be the first "found footage"-type movie, the one that started this as a genre. And yes the marketing back then was made in a way that it felt like it was ACTUAL real found footage (like a reallife crime case). And since this genre of movie was still something new, people didn't know better and were scared but curious to see it. :D Also I agree, to this day this movie still feels very real and I also love that they don't show any obvious witch or whatever. It's what makes this movie (and similar ones) stay in your head for a long time.

Best horror movie ever. It has no jump scares, no ridiculous monsters, no outrageous gore, and no supernatural events (except by implication). It is a psychological suspense thriller in which we see the gradual disintegration of the characters’ psyches. It is best appreciated by people who have backpacked alone in a deep forest for several days.
I saw this as an adult when it first came out. The effect of this film is much greater in a dark theater. As it was getting tense, in one of the night scenes, we heard a bang, the screen went black, and the exit lights went out, leaving us in total darkness. People gasped and whispered, “Is this part of the movie?” But it wasn’t. A thunderstorm had caused a momentary power outage. The film started up again, and we were really primed for the ending!
Most of the forest scenes were improvised, with no formal script, giving it an authenticity unmatched by its imitators. The actors really camped out for several days, while the director presented them with general instructions and constant surprises (e.g., playing a tape recording of children’s voices in the night, followed by the crew battering their tent), to which the actors improvised their reactions.

I’ve never seen Blair Witch Project but just seeing it in snippets here it did give me a feel for what its going for, and oh my this shit is terrifying. You can’t help but feel as tho what you’re seeing is real. The simplicity of the events taking place and the acting are simply too raw.

  • @MetzMan

I remember when this movie came out and blew up and how it impacted the people that went to see it. People that needed to be escorted home because they live near a forest and all that sort of paranoia. Even when people knew this was "fake" footage, it would still scare people in a new way, because found footage was a brand new thing at that time and it can really get under your skin by feeling realistic by having natural and partially reactionary acting. This was because this movie was setup as them planning the big event points, but everything scary that happened at night was the director and a bunch of other people making noises and planting the things they found to create a sort of authentic reaction.
I myself watched it for the first time when a video compression technique known as DivX was starting to get popular, making downloading of movies of (only) 600-ish mb possible. So I watched it like a video file on my PC, like it was found footage passed around. It had quite the effect on me. I loved the early interview scene where the small child keeps trying to shush her mother talking about the Witch, already making it feel authentic. Watching it alone at night with quite a big imagination helps making it scarier too.
The first Paranormal Activity is another one that really got under my skin, since your house at night is supposed to be that safe place, especially your bedroom. So afterwards it made you fear your own house. The idea of recording video during the whole night and then what if it DID record something paranormal, even if it's a little thing, you would not be able to ever feel safe again.
Sadly these things become too popular where sequel after sequel gets made, diminishing the effect and making it feel more Hollywood with each inspired project.

@@IceCenders Yeah I get that, there's a movie called "The Howling" from the 80's that's one of, if not the best werewolf movie out there. There's a scene where someone is hiding in trees, and on the VHS you couldn't make out the face, and it was a scary scene. On the BluRay, the face is clear as a bell, and the scene loses all it's intensity.

I watched this some time after the release, maybe like a few months after the cinema premiere. Now, I wasn't like completely sure that it was actual found footage, but I also wasn't sure it was not. And watching this, at night, alone, on my VHS (this was when you'd still rent physical copies of movies), I kinda went into it as if it was all real, and it certainly felt effin real. 😮

True point you make about the acting. Even with the medium, it wouldn't have caused such a storm of "is this real or not??" of it weren't for flawless/above and beyond acting.
I feel like that's the last time this kinda shit can happen on such a wide scale. Cause this movie sparked discourse but there was no reddit, twitter, etc to quickly snopes the bubbling discussion.
Reminds me of how War of the Worlds was originally a radio broadcast. And people who tuned in not at the beginning and missed the whole 'this is a work of fiction' bit flipped the f out and started evacuating

This is a very "time and place" movie. It came out when the internet was new to people, found footage movies weren't a thing yet, and the actors were unknown at the time. The marketing behind the movie was absolutely BRILLIANT, and a LOT of people, including my 13 year old naive self, thought it was real found footage, at least for a little bit in the beginning. If you watched this movie in the theater when the commercials were airing, and lots of people thinking it was real, it was generally one of the most frightening cinema experiences ever. It was so unsettling, it was like watching a 90 minute snuff film.. It still holds up knowing it's fake, but it doesn't have the guttural impact it once did.

It's not based on a true story. But when it came out, we were all told back in 1999 that it was *actual* found footage. The director actually paid the 3 actors to go on hiatus for a year so it was more believable. That's precisely why it scared the shit out of me when it came out.

The Blair Witch Project has one of if not the best plant/ payoff scenarios in potentially all of horror and certainly for it's genre. whereas we are giving some information early on through dialogue... the guy that tells Heather about putting them in a corner, etc... right smack in the middle of her interviewing the townsfolk so we are not meant to think too much about it, thinking it's just another hoax but it somehow sticks with us, putting a victim in a corner and killing them... we then go through the entire movie before receiving the payoff to that statement, which turns out to be the final frame of the film.. mike standing in a corner before Heather is knocked unconscious... it makes you think right back to what that gentlemen said within the first 15 minutes of the film and it's creepy as hell..

I was in elementary school when this came out. Now the internet was very much a part of life (ol' nostalgia for that aol logging in static-audio journey 🖤) BUT this was like the first general wave of internet. Screamers (annoying ass jump scares) were about to be a thing. People were much more naive bc this was the first time we'd come in contact with this stuff. My mom chided a classmate for sending me a chainletter bc I had sat at home upset that the 'send this to 20 ppl or you'll have bad luck' would actually affect me 😅
Then again..election..maybe ppl are still f-ing naive. Whatev.
There was a REAL debate over whether or not this "footage" (this movie) was real. I'd say my class was prob 60/40 it's real. The only reason why I wasn't convinced, well maybe cause I never saw the movie for years cause I was scared, was because I argued: ...they wouldn't let a snuff film be commercialized into this pop culture juggernaut.
Nowadays tho my logic doesn't stand up as well since we've kinda got there tho maybe not in popcorn cinema ways.
