It’s called Super 8 because the type of camera and film the kids used to make their movie is called Super 8. My mom had one of those when I was growing up in the late 70’s and early 80’s

You know what's crazy, I rewatched this movie a couple days ago & I was just saying how it's a shame no one has reacted to this movie on RUclips & then this pops up. This movie gives me major stranger things & It/loser club vibes. Such an underrated film

The train crash is one of my favorite scenes in the movie.
The sound effects for the scene are taken from Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

SUPER 8 is the film-calibre and type. 8-milimeter (8mm) and the Super8. It allowed enhanced audio to be saved to the same tape as a separate channel, or a separate editable track.

I love this movie. It’s got all those old school vibes from Goonies and Stand By Me. Definitely feels like the Looser’s Club from IT.
A monster movie with emotions and great characters.

Super 8 is in reference to the camera that they used to film their movie. The Super 8 handheld camera uses 8mm film.

This film and Stranger Things were inspired and homages to Spielberg's earlier works like E.T.
That's why the two seem so similar.

As someone who, as a kid, would spend his time making little movies like the zombie film they made - who made most of his friends that way actually - I adored this film when it came out. Super8 was a gauge of film stock that was very popular among amateur filmmakers when Abrams was growing up (Spielberg started on standard 8mm).
The title though was originally meant as a double entendre, with there being 8 kids (if you include the older sister and the stoner guy). I got it more or less straight away but for most viewers I'd judge Abrams was being a bit too cryptic there (and the film may have been more successful with a more obvious title).
I don't believe I've ever seen a reaction video of this film, so you may be the first there. If there's one thing that disappointed me on first viewing this film it was that they used CGI for the alien. If you're trying to make a film seem like a film more of the era in which it was set, you should use the technology that was available in that time to truly sell the illusion.

Awesome reactions. I don't know if you ever realized it or not but the man arrested in the beginning, he was supposed to work one day but drank too much the night before and ended up calling in so the mother took his place that morning and she was killed during an accident. It would have been him so thats why the Kyle Chandler's character has had a vendetta against him.

I've only seen this movie in full probably twice. I didn't think about it until watching it with your reaction but this movie while having bits of other flavors of past movies and maybe ST too, watching the part where they are trying to get the townspeople to leave due to the fire, reminded me very much of Close Encounters of the Third Kind where the Army tried to make to township near Devil's Tower, think there was an Anthrax breakout. 😮 Anyways, this is a good movie and very much has Steven Spielberg's stamp on it. Oh btw- Alice is Elle Fanning, Dakota Fanning's younger sister.

I watched this movie a few weeks ago, and I absolutely enjoyed it! I even got the movie on Blu-ray over a week ago!
It had a great story about a group of kids in the late 1970's who were filming a super 8 movie late at night only to witness a terrifying train crash that releases a dangerous creature into their town, and people start disappearing along with dogs running away, electronics and appliances being mysteriously taken and property being damaged out of nowhere, overwhelming the local authorities and putting many lives at stake. This springs the kids into an extraordinary adventure to figure out what is going on while discovering a secret military operation along the way.
It also had a great emotional story about a 14-year-old boy who is moaning the unfortunate death of his mom and his relationship problem with his dad. Throughout the movie, Joe learns to accept the death of his mom and move on while learning to stand up for himself in the end.
The acting in this movie was absolutely great, and the actors did a phenomenal job at playing their roles, particularly Joel Courtney as Joe Lamb and Elle Fanning as Alice Dainard.
The ending of this movie was absolutely phenomenal and is one of the greatest movie endings I have ever seen in any movie to date.
The sound design of this movie was so well done with the very sudden loud sounds that play during the movie's scary scenes, particularly the roaring and growling sounds of the alien. It also had a great atmosphere to it as well especially during the scary scenes.
I also love how the movie relies on building the mystery, which keeps you constantly guessing throughout the entire movie and one good example of this is how the movie doesn't show the entire alien until the very end, only showing a little bit of it leading up to the ending scene.
The CGI in this movie was amazing, particularly the train crash scene and the design of the alien itself.
The soundtrack in this movie was nothing short of a phenomenal, particularly the song that plays during the ending. It is absolutely one of Michael Giacchino's best soundtracks he's ever done.
Overall, this movie was phenomenally great as it pays many homages to many classic Spielberg movies of the 70's and 80's while having a great story about forgiveness and moving on from bad things that happen in life. It also had many well-done action and suspense scenes that rely very heavily on the atmosphere and its great sound design while also having a little bit of funny moments as well.
This movie is so extremely underrated and it is such a shame that this movie never really got the appreciation that it deserved when it first came out back in 2011, and even almost 13 years later, it is still extremely underappreciated and barely nobody talks about this movie online except for like a very few people. It is yet another underrated gem from 2011 along with other equally underrated movies such as Arthur Christmas, Rango and The Adventures of Tintin as much like those movies, Super 8 was overshadowed by many big movies that came out that same year like Transformers 3, Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor and numerous others.
Your reaction to this movie was pretty good! This movie clearly deserves much more positive credit than it receives.

'Super 8' is a reference to the kind of camera/film they were using to make movies. It refers to the 8mm wide celluloid film from back in the day which was considered superior to thinner frames, so a movie shot in super 8 would have better res etc etc. Note, i am no expert so this is layman's understanding 😉 xxx

Please, please don't multitask at the opening of such films. You missed a vital clue in the opening scene. That clue showed for 1 second, but you glanced away then.
A heavy industry context. A sign showing many days without a workplace injury or death. A worker on a boom taking down those display numbers and replacing them with a zero.
An incredible amount of backstory conveyed in one visual second.
One of several reasons this film was a masterpiece.

Thanks for your reaction MF. Joe releasing the locket at the end, was a subluminal message from the alien - let go of the past. I caught that when I first saw this film in the theatre. • @eddietucker7005

I’m surprised you haven’t heard of it. JJ Abrams plus Steven Spielberg equals nothing less than a great film. Remember Spielberg made Super 8 movies as a kid? This is something from his childhood love of making his movies on Super 8 (Super 8 is a type of film that was big back in the day, used for home movies. Not eight legged monsters.) I’m surprised you didn’t recognize Elle Fanning. She’s a wonderful actress but I still believe her sister, Dakota Fanning is stronger.
If you haven’t seen much by JJ Abrams, I suggest you watch the Star Trek reboots he did starring Chris Pine as Kirk, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Simon Pegg as Scotty… the list goes on on and on. I rarely say this but he did an AMAZING job of directing the three films. Check them out. (btw - I’m a Star Wars fan, not Star Trek, but I do love these films!)
