I think i saw this film ONCE by chance on tv, and I was hooked. My parents had showed me Goonies before and that kind of film stuck with me, and seeing this one brought back that feeling. It's a shame it doesn't get the love it rightfully deserves
One very special thing JJ did that I appreciated, is that after teasing the kids zombie movie in bits and pieces, at the end credits, he actually gives us the full kids movie, and it maybe is the best part of the movie emotionally, because it's such a payoff for what the characters were there to do (at least prior to the monster). Also, JJ was very open about how it was an homage to Spielberg films, so it's no surprise he asked Spielberg to be a part. I have been very critical of most of JJs work, but as you said, this was really his only original film that wasn't someone else's IP, and it has a very personal feel to it. I think JJs rep would be salvaged if he went back to original film making like this.

if u want a darker kids on bike movie, theres a really underrated spanish one called a christmas tale from 2005. it takes place in 1985, and a big plot point is related to zombie movies. its great
I vividly remember that the teaser for this movie was a preview on the dvd of Captain America the First Avenger, and even as a kid I wanted to watch it because it looked so cool, as I’m also from a small town. I watched it for the first time a few nights ago, and it didn’t disappoint!
i only watched this movie once, and what stuck with me was the "friends making a movie" aspect, i forgot there was a mystery element lmao, I'm always like oh yeah the movie where the kids make a movie! i love how into it they were, like scrambling to get a perfect shot, using the fact that there was military activity in the town to film a scene with them in the background, having to wait for the train to film a train scene, etc, it was so cute
Since JJ Abrams made Cloverfield, I always thought Super 8 had some connections to Cloverfield. Besides my theories on that, my favorite thing Abrams did was LOST hands down.
I like to believe Lost and Cloverfield happened in the same universe. Since the last season of Lost was set in 2007 and Cloverfield happened in early 2008, in my mind that means the people who managed to get off the island in the finale came back to civilization and like a month later NYC gets absolutely wrecked by a monster.
This has been in my top 5 movies since I was in middle school. I'm 25 now and still have to go back a rewatch it from time to time. I always loved their 'film making' aspect since I love photography.
I thought the train crash was badass and blew my mind as a kid (as did the whole movie, it was perfectly scary and mysterious for my age when it came out, which was 11 so I was also roughly the same age as the characters, maybe that's why I love this movie so much)
I remember watching this movie years and years ago and i thought this movie was pretty good but after watching this movie i now realize damn this movie was actually awesome and yeah its crazy that someone yeah this movie copied Stranger Things when this came out years before Strangers Things and i agree this is our generation The Goonies and Strangers Things i was 17 the year this came out so this is the closest to my demographic.
I grew up in a town of 3,000 in Texas. I can def relate. Though we did have a few episodes of something exciting finally happening. Problem is that nobody wanted the sort of excitement we got. Those would be a church shooting that killed several, a serial killer who escaped jail and went on the run in our area, and another serial killer(Angel Resendiz) also passed through on a train and murdered one of our locals. Careful what you wish for. I’d rather it been a hidden treasure.
I was in middle school when this movie came out, and I used to compose music to win scholarships. The theme for that year was "The Magic of the Moment," and I couldn't figure out what that meant. I ended up watching this movie for the first time with my grandpa, and after the scene where Elle did her "I never asked you to stop. I never asked you to give up or walk away, but I'm asking you now" where she was acting at the train station, my grandpa turned to me and said "that's the magic of the moment." I finally understood what the magic of the moment meant. I ended up winning the music composition award that year, and this movie will always reminds me of simpler times when I was able to sit on the living room floor and watch movies with my grandpa. This will always be my favorite movie.
This movie was so good. Ive only watched it once, but it stayed with me. Now that I've shown my kid Stranger Things, I'll show him Super 8. Another good friend group movie is Now and Then. It's often forgotten since it centers around a group of girls, but it still is an excellent movie with a believable friendship between the four characters. Updating to say that I did show it to my kid and he really liked it. I also found a copy at goodwill so now I own it.
I grew up in the 80s, and Super 8 was a fabulous nostalgia flick for me. It definitely laid the ground work for stranger things. There's on thing I've been trying to figure out though. In the movie, there's a subplot involving this local stoner dude who has the hots for Charles' older sister, who ends up helping the kids in exchange for getting a date with the sister. I'm certain I've seen this specific trope used in 80's movies and/or television, but I can't remember where. The trope being - One character has a hot older sister whom another character keeps wanting to meet, and asks the one character to introduce him to the sister, or somehow otherwise hook them up. Then maybe a deal is made somehow. It's driving me nuts. Where did this trope come from?
The fact that this movie was the least voted for in the last poll on this channel proves that it’s still extremely underrated, and it’s just so CRAZY, IMHO. Also I would love to see you review the movie “Splinter” - another underrated flick of that era.
I’m so happy to see people still talking about this movie! It was my absolute favorite movie my freshman year of high school! I grew up in Ohio so my dad and I used to take trips to Weirton, WV where the movie was filmed. We ended up talking to a really nice guy who had a restaurant where the diner scene was filmed and he gave me some props from the set that he had sitting in a back storage room because he saw how much I loved the movie! I still make a point to watch it at least twice a year!
I remember watching Super 8 in theaters and loved it from the moment I saw it. I didn’t grow up watching a bunch of movies besides animated stuff (I was born in 1990); it wasn’t until I became an adult I started watching movies where friendship from the outcasts and sci-fi/mystery movies became my fav. Never saw the Goonies but I love how Super 8 (For Me) stood on its own because I hadn’t seen much like that before in the same way. So I didn’t think of it drawing parallels of stuff until further in my adulthood. It’s great on its own and is still a very underrated movie.
I was a young kid when Super 8 came out, I remember we bought it and put in in out DVD player in our "T.V Room" I remember being so enthralled by the mysterious yet somber score, I loved all the characters and banter between them. As a adult watching it I can truly say it gives me a Nostalgic feeling about my childhood makes me think of all the adventures my friends and I went on. The casting of this movie and the characters really work together. Great film.
Saw this in theaters and during like the biggest "jumpscare" with the alien, a ceiling tile fell down onto the seat right in front of me. Most immersive movie experience everrr
So I grew up on E.T, and goonies, while I missed this in the theatres me and my family rented it in last year's of video store rentals. I must have been 9 or 10 when we picked it up and because I especially loved E.T so much I instantly fell in love with super 8. When that local video store went out they sold all their copies and one of the first things we made sure to grab was Super 8. All this to say I kinda resent you calling Stranger things the Gen Z super 8, but more importantly that I whole heartedly love this movie same as you and agree that more people should love it instead of overlooking it.
Thrifty if you get the chance, I personally feel like you should also make a video on Project Almanac. Highly underrated sci-fi movie about time travel that I feel doesn't get talked about nearly enough. I remember being obsessed over the concept of it, along with Super 8 and Chronicle when I was in middle school too
I love the small town mystery genre too! Growing up, I could never really define it but I always knew I loved it. And Super 8 is really underrated for sure. This was a fantastic video my friend. It made me appreciate Super 8 even more
I was born in 1974, so I grew up with movies like the Goonies. I enjoyed Super 8 the first time I saw it. I appreciated the Spielberg & Donner kind of vibe. Every time I watch it I like it even more, it may be his best movie actually. Of course when I first saw that it was the train cash and other similar things that I was impressed with, but after watching it at least three or four times, I think it's the subtleties that I appreciate just as much, or more. It really does feel like the eighties.
My dad worked a lot when I was a kid, I love movies, don’t remember watching many with him. Remember watching this with him dozens of times. Amazing movie, tons of love for it.
I was so excited when I saw this video in my recommended, this was one of my favorite movies as a kid and it always made me sad when I’d bring it up and no one knew what I was talking about
Thank you for covering this movie! It's been in the back of my mind since I saw it in theaters with a friend. I think it came out at a perfect time for someone like me. I was 12 years old, about to go to a new school and start 7th grade. I also had a very active imagination so it was also probably the first thriller movie I saw. I hope people will see this video and give it a chance! Also just found your channel and have been binging quite a bit while I've been working on my cross stitch project. So thank you for making such wonderful videos to watch/listen to!
Amazing video, I have to say when I saw the “Stand by me” photo. Man that had me Nostalgic and also I have to give credit to my dad for telling me to watch it cause it is or at least used to be his favorite movie (idk if it still is😂).👏👏👏
I used to say “80s/90s kids going on an adventure” was my favorite movie genre, movies like the goonies, stand by me, now and then, adventures in babysitting. But I never had one made in/for my generation (I’m 26) and then I saw super 8 when I was like 12 or 13 and we finally got one but it didn’t do well as the box office and everyone forgot about it my not me(or my sister) to this day we recommend it to any and everyone we know. To me this movie is the perfect successor to those movies in the 80s. Also as soon as stranger things came out I was like “oh this is like super 8” and people would look at me like I had 3 heads because they’d never heard of super 8. Great video about a great movie ❤
This is legitimately one of my favorite movies EVER made. I still think it's perfect. Especially now that I am someone whose mom passed away unexpectedly, it really hits a even closer to home.
I loved this movie so much when I was a kid but i've somewhat forgotten it. i only remember it when i hear the term "super 8" in reference to the camera, i immediately think of this movie. so cool to see a video about it
I always felt Super 8 was maybe possibly going to be part of Cloverfield, but wasn’t. It’s on my 31 Days of Halloween movie list…I know it’s not really a Halloween type of horror movie, but I just wanted to see it again. Then this video showed up in my feed! Btw, it’s nice to see the person behind the voice! You may do that often, but I’m a new fan, watching 5-6 videos back to back (so far), so it was new to me.
It is one of the best cast protagonist-kids films. It is ballsy, terrific fun. You feel for the kids; you feel for the parents and other adults in the town. JJ should have stuck with making individual films of this quality. There are few "off" moments, and it always reminds me of the creative fun my buddies and I had when we were in middle and high school. It makes a guy... well, nostalgic.
i've been obsessed (like really embarrassingly obsessed) with this film since it came out and i always felt like i was the only one that loved it. i rewatched it a few days ago and was glad it still holds up (now that i dont have the child/teenager filter, i do agree i would always love it for the nostalgia tho) and because i recently rewatched it I was thinking how underrated it its and decided to look it up on youtube and see if anyone was talking about all of this and well now im watching your video which i enjoyed very much. gotta admit i love this film so much that i still remember most of the lines haha like i said: embarrassingly obsessed
I remembered seeing this in the theaters with my parents just after it had came out. Love Giacchino’s score. I thought of this being like Iron Giant crossed with Spielberg’s War of the Worlds.
The video is very well set musically, I would have liked you to indicate which songs you used in each part of the video. For example, the song at minute 1:44 is perfect, and I would like to know what the name is, but between the fact that you didn't indicate it and the volume of your voice it's just to high, even Shazam couldn't find it, so it doesn't seem like I will know anytime soon.
I think it's a hidden gem, that goonies mystery type vibe, kids saving the day but in a real way. I think it's a lot of fun. Plus.....dat train crash scene. damn.
3:35. That young Matt dillon movie was much earlier than goonies, and I don't remember it having any love. There is a whole wasp's nest of memory tied up in that one.
This was my favorite childhood movie, saw it in theaters when it first came out, probably 10 or 11 years old, this is what brought me to love movies as much as i do today
I watched this with my dad when I was little and it left a huge impact on me, despite not remembering it very well. A few weeks ago I decided to watch it again and was a little disapointed to see that it wasn't the life changing spectacle I remembered it being. But I will always love this movie.
I’ve watched this movie on TV at the night, months ago and still it’s coming back on and on to me… there is something magical about it, 4 sure. And Thank you very much for your comments regarding fathers in this film. Really needed that right now…❤
Joel Courtney is still acting. Just a slight cheerful note for anyone who was hoping these kids still managed to keep acting. Love this film, it’s oddly a comfort film for me because my dad loved it so much when it came out and we watched it every summer.
When I realised that the tatted up hunk from The Night Agent was the tall kid with the glasses from this movie I lost my entire mind, only to find absolutely nobody I know has seen this film and could relate to how much of a glowup that was. So I was left to just sit with that useless trivia on my own. Devastating.
@@melty378 wait wait WHAT? Not me over here not knowing that. I only know Joel Courtney because he's been moderately successful with B-list movies over the last few years.
I saw this in theaters & the trailers didn’t sell what the movie actually was, nobody laughed at the jokes until the end when we see their finished movie, someone said “that was funnier then the actual movie” & that made the audience laugh. I enjoyed it & believe it was just underrated.
I was 12 when this came out and it definitely left an impact on me, I could never catch the knack my dad had for goonies but this one got me good. The spectacle of the train wreck was enough to grab my attention but had me hooked with the suspense of looking for the alien. 8/10, would have loved to see more practical effects
I remember being in jr high and going with all my friends to go see this movie. Such a good movie and such a core memory for me. This one holds a special place in time
I find this movie so wonderfully relatable! I grew up in the 1970s and had a Super 8 movie camera. My friends and I shot movies and dreamed of entering one of them in the annual contest that took place in my hometown for young filmmakers. The whole idea of this movie reminded me so much of being a kid! I thought the horror movie that is incorporated into the story was absolutely top-notch. There are, I suppose reasons to call it a bit cheesy, but I thought it was absolutely fantastic. Also, I really enjoyed the sweet romance between Alice and Joe. I, of course, felt sorry for Charles, but those things can't be helped. I have, one by one, dragged all of my friends into my home theater to watch this movie. I don't ever seem to tire of it. I give it two thumbs up because that's all the thumbs I have. If you decide to take a look at this movie, I really hope you enjoy it. Kudos to everybody involved in making it thank you for reading, Dave
This was a fun movie for people of my generation because we watched so many great Spielberg movies that this film took all its elements from. The director did a great job, but didn’t do something unique, he took all the elements he watched Spielberg do (with his help), and made a very nice homage to his style. And Spielberg may have taken all his styles from previous directors before him that I wasn’t familiar with. It was jaws/ET/Close encounters/Goonies, etc. All fun movies to watch and re-watch.
I still remember seeing the teaser trailer for it for the first time. I was so intrigued to find out what was in the train car. This movie is super underrated to the point where most people I come across haven't seen it or heard of it.
Only a small way through, but this genre is specifically called "Kids on bikes". There are a lot of interesting stories like it in other forms. "Paper Girls" the comic for example is pretty good, the Amazon adaptation was short lived.
I did see the goonies first but that was only because my parents showed it to me, but this the first “coming of age” “kids group” movie I saw that was also my generations goonies, so I completely get where you’re coming from this whole video
Great video and a hugely underrated film. Couple of tiny points - Caitriona Balfe was a great choice for the deceased mother, as there's something almost mythical or ethereal about her. Also, the blond kid would be a great choice to play a young Tom Petty if they ever decide to do a biopic
I watched super 8 in middle school as well, toke a date there but was so caught up in the story I forgot I had brought a date. Such a great film and glad to see it getting the love it deserves
I remember anticipating this movie coming out! Taking my dad to see it with me. Sadly not many people were in attendance and it doesn’t get the love it deserves but this is a really fun solid film. This movie used to be in my top 3.
I saw this in theaters with my friends at the age of 11. We were all pretty horrified by the alien, but it definitely struck a chord with us as we saw a lot of our own dynamic reflected in the friend groups’. Plus, for years afterwards I imagined myself as being one of the Super 8 kids whenever I made a movie.
I agree on all counts!! J.J. is underrated/defensible (is work on Lost), mystery box storytelling is engaging if you don't overwhelm with unanswered questions (again, Lost) the characters, action, score, storytelling, cinematography, etc. was all great and his magnum opus, it's also one of my top 10 films, etc. My only ciriticim is it's not diverse enough. Otherwise, it's totally mint!
I just subscribed to your channel I been watching you for a while and loved your videos but I never subscribed for some reason and I noticed that so I just did keep up the good work.
I actually paused this video to go rewatch the movie. Haven’t seen it in a long time. I could say that it is a cute storyline like the goonies. The kids are very likable, the center drama of the mother is better than most films, and the film surprisingly pushes the PG-13 a bit. The horror was sparingly short, but there are a few seconds that give you some of that harder edge. The build up and evacuation of the mass panic is done very tight and to the point. As so much of the film is. In terms of payoff, I think that’s where the film kind of loses some of its magic. The relationships are rounded out and that part is great. By the time you get to the alien leaving, you realize the kids and father had almost no true connection to the films events. They are sort of bystanders. Films like the goonies make the kids have integral actions that effect the mystery. This movie doesn’t do that. They didn’t do anything that drastically altered the military’s plans or the aliens. It makes that side of the story feel empty by the end. Where the payoffs are, is in the main theme. Overall, it’s a simple and cute movie that is entertaining. Nothing crazy and anyone can watch it.
something about these nostalgic movies/series like IT, stranger things, super 8 and stand by me hit HARD. i'm not even american but i feel nostalgic when i watch these movies lmao.
There was a Sunday Disney two parter that i believe was called "Dracula"s Castle", a group of kids filming a movie about Dracula and uncovering a mystery involving some thieves in an old lighthouse. I'm sure Abrams saw it to.
Someone made a video essay about how beautiful this movie is before me 😭. The music is so amazing too, I’ve had it on my movie playlist for a decade at this point
I'm Gen X and watched Goonies etc in the theater as a kid and I absolutely love this movie. I've lost count of how many times I've watched it at this point.

Strangers Things does it better. It’s just facts they nailed the aesthetic. Super 8 is great though.

This has been in my top 5 movies since I was in middle school. I'm 25 now and still have to go back a rewatch it from time to time. I always loved their 'film making' aspect since I love photography.
I thought the train crash was badass and blew my mind as a kid (as did the whole movie, it was perfectly scary and mysterious for my age when it came out, which was 11 so I was also roughly the same age as the characters, maybe that's why I love this movie so much)
One of my favorite movies ever and I feel like I’m the only one who knows what it is
Me too! I love this movie
I just rewatched a few weeks ago and it's still holds up!
This will always be my favorite movie.
glad you decided to make a video for this after the channel poll. my brother and I loved this movie growing up
This movie was so good.
Elle fanning is such a big star now, she’s a good actress
I remember being obsessed over the concept of it, along with Super 8 and Chronicle when I was in middle school too
I fell in love with this movie at 16. It was such an amazing flick. I’m extremely grateful I was able to experience it in the theater.
I love the small town mystery genre too! Growing up, I could never really define it but I always knew I loved it. And Super 8 is really underrated for sure. This was a fantastic video my friend. It made me appreciate Super 8 even more
Yes! I though you weren’t gonna do this one because it came in last on the community poll, I’m excited for this
I was born in 1974, so I grew up with movies like the Goonies.
It's crazy that I'm watching the crazies rn
z
My dad worked a lot when I was a kid, I love movies, don’t remember watching many with him. Remember watching this with him dozens of times. Amazing movie, tons of love for it.
This was my FAVORITE as a kid. So underrated. I remember having a dvd and watching it over and over in middle school
I was so excited when I saw this video in my recommended, this was one of my favorite movies as a kid and it always made me sad when I’d bring it up and no one knew what I was talking about
3:25 the irony of Stranger things being for a younger audience when it's heavily based around 80's nostalgia and media from that time.
Probably the only movie J. J. Abrams directed that I truly like.
Man that had me Nostalgic and also I have to give credit to my dad for telling me to watch it cause it is or at least used to be his favorite movie (idk if it still is😂).👏👏👏
Bringing back the sound effect joke from the Crazies video u did made me laugh so much. 17:54
I love the credits song. It makes me look forward to summer. Like it makes me say hopefully "it's gonna be a summer"
I remember being at my grandparents house and walking in on the scene where the monster kills the dude on the powerline
i've been obsessed (like really embarrassingly obsessed) with this film since it came out and i always felt like i was the only one that loved it. i rewatched it a few days ago and was glad it still holds up (now that i dont have the child/teenager filter, i do agree i would always love it for the nostalgia tho) and because i recently rewatched it I was thinking how underrated it its and decided to look it up on youtube and see if anyone was talking about all of this and well now im watching your video which i enjoyed very much. gotta admit i love this film so much that i still remember most of the lines haha like i said: embarrassingly obsessed
Always loved this movie. Seeing it in theaters was life-changing to my 10-year-old self
The ending almost made me cry for some reason. Literally one of my favorite movies of all time.
JJ should have done more originals ! Love this movie 🍿
Another sub-genre I think of with Super8 is “movies about making movies” and that’s a big reason why I particularly love this movie
Really needed that right now…❤
I was hoping for an analysis on this film from someone and one of my favorite RUclipsrs seems to have somehow read my mind! Thank you!
@@melty378i just searched the night agent on RUclips and wow... gabriel turns out to be so fine 😭
New to this channel but I'm binging every video I can find, you're funny with the little edits 😂 actual meme king 🙌👌
They filmed parts of this in my small town Weirton WV when I was in middle school. One of my friends got cast as an extra
Awesome little known movie, I rewatch it every year. Glad to see some other people appreciate it as well
Watched this tonight off the strength of this video and loved it. Thanks for that
There were a lot of movies like this when I was a kid like , ET, The goonies, monster squad etc just gives good vibes all around.
The way for years I waited, waited, and waited for super 8 part 2
I agree on all counts!! J.J. is underrated/defensible (is work on Lost), mystery box storytelling is engaging if you don't overwhelm with unanswered questions (again, Lost) the characters, action, score, storytelling, cinematography, etc. was all great and his magnum opus, it's also one of my top 10 films, etc. My only ciriticim is it's not diverse enough. Otherwise, it's totally mint!
I will take any love for Super 8. It deserves so much more love. It’s been in my top 10 films for years.
Remember seeing this movie in theaters. Always loved this movie.
Saw Super 8 in theaters as a teen; one of the best movies I’ve seen in theaters along with shutter island.
Chief Lamb walked so Hopper could run!
