Hello everyone, I wanted to leave this comment here because I'm not proud of my phrasing with this moment at 17:33 Any way how you look at it, this comment was ignorant and stupid, but it was not my intention to say every single country in the Middle East has streets in poor conditions. I know there are paved roads and it's not streets made of gravel. It was a stupid thing to say, as I was thinking only of Middle Eastern countries that are or were in military conflicts similar to how Kahndaq is under Intergang's control. Secondly, as a kid I used to skate, and my arch-nemesis was always some tiny pebble, stone, or grain of sand that would send me flying off that board. This is no excuse for my poor phrasing, but just another reason as to why I left this in as well as the comment about the skateboard wheels. I'm not American, but I do know that the UAE has some of the most technologically advanced and clean cities in the world, and using the term "Middle East" lumping that in with all the other countries is unfair and offensive. I sincerely apologize to those of you who took offense at the comment, it was not my intent, and going forward I will not be as thickheaded as I was here. Thank you. edit: someone mentioned in the comments that Black Adam's wife from the flashback is not played by the same actress as the Adriana character. This was a stupid mistake, ha. Thank you, again.
Not to be too nitpicky, but your comment about that place "looking like china" was kinda weird too. Like its a couple of hills and a rice field bro, there are plenty of places in Asia and around the world that look like that
The Rock has a clause in his contract that he can’t lose any fights & has a $20,000,000 salary. In contrast, Robin Williams had a clause in his contracts that the studio must employ at least 10 homeless people wherever they were filming, and took pay cuts to work with other actors he wanted. The Rock’s ego is his biggest enemy.

The “no losing” clause in contracts is wild. Charlie Cox’s Daredevil loses 80% of his fights unless it’s against normal thugs, and even then he receives injuries. Losing, coming back with more of a plan and fighting smarter is what makes a hero. Those adjustments is what builds the character up. Dwayne is just so terrified of looking weak, even in a fictional universe.
It's such an egotistical thing. No famous all-time great actor or actress has ever such a wild clause. Jackie-Chan, Arnold Sch or Denzel Washington don't have such things, and he thinks such a clause will make him what? More of a star?
That sounds a lot like a pro wrestling thing. That is to say, failure to separate "character" from "actor". Wrestlers like Hulk Hogan and Sean Michaels were famous for either refusing to lose or adding stipulations, trying to protect "their character". That's at least a little understandable, because "The Rock" is Dwane Johnson's OC, not something Vince McMahon owns, so it makes sense that he'd be protective of that. Black Adam is not his character.
The worst part is that, a lot of characters in Superhero movies do get their shit beaten. If we talk about DC, the Batman was beaten, not to a pulp, but intelectually so, when Riddler's actual plan was put through. If we say an anti-hero being beaten, Deadpool took a beaten a lot. Being beaten doesn't make a character weak, what makes them weak id that if they don't get up. Hell, Adam could've taken a beaten when he had no power, but had to power through to save the female character or the child, and get beaten up because he doesn't have his strength, that would've been interesting
Oh yea that guy *snaps fingers* yea yea uhhh *snaps fingers* it's on the tip of my tongue.... uhhh, oh! yea Kevin Hart's friend that guy from that movie
you rewrite everything or most of something when your writing gets to the part that would logically result with him losing. not ideal but only way I can think of to have creative freedom and not compromise at the same time. when you change stuff it can work but retconned so it feels off and unbelievable. but if you think about it, with a meta understanding of said clause, you could have some pretty intense setups for other characters by developing them a bit, and then with the audience knowing that if they ever run into theRock they would just die, it creates a twisted tension for sub characters from the main character 😅 i think this has been done before a lot so its not new but for the writers trying to not make something terrible its the best option most likely the point of the clause is ego related, but the loop hole is to make characters people actually care about instead and the risk of loss makes them more interesting. of course this is still a terrible scenario but a bit of creativity can make it work, the real issue is this kind of concept existing in a super hero universe, and one that already has been established and on a 'villian?' so this kind of invincibility would just stagnate any future of the series which is the real issue imo, not a movie but the cinematic universe it's trying to build. especially when you can't just send said invincible character to another world to be absent from everything so there's actual potential for growth like they did with the hulk
Prison scene in Furious Seven or Fate of the Furious where the rock's Hobbs vs Statham's Shaw is the best example iirc The fight doesn't resolved because there's another bigger problem

Probably because Black Adam isn't widely known. I only knew of him because of the Injustice games which is how I was aware he had electricity like Shazam but boiling him down to 'evil superman' is easy to understand.
He actually has SOME of the powers that MIMIC Superman; only the source is magical. He's also not an evil Superman - he's an Evil SHAZAM. Wherein Superman's powers are a natural biological function of his alien heritage, SHAZAM and Black Adam had to be vested with theirs. So I'd argue that by and large, while they may be similar in some respects (and since they're powers are magical in nature, they do get an advantage in battles against a Kyrptonian) Superman as it stands in the longrun is going to be superior. [They have the powers that were stolen from Gods & Champions = Clark is literally descended from a Kryptonian God; and an actual God himself in all but canon acknowledgement, so long as he's under the yellow sun] * It has been at least semi acknowledged that he's factually immortal...
I mean he isn’t completely wrong Black Adam has a good amount of Superman’s moveset but he is under a misconception that Black Adam is a evil Superman when he is actually a evil Shazam who the wizard wrongly picked as his champion. Which is why in the first movie he spend centuries on picking the perfect vessel as he didn’t want a repeat of what happened with Black Adam if he picked wrong again.
Clip over to a scene from the Superman Shazam movie where they fight Black Adam and Superman hits atom with heat vision and cold breath and when asked “what was that” Superman respond with “another power you don’t have.” You wanna see Superman Vs Black Adam check the trailer for DC Online and watch Superman tank Black Adam’s punches, grab his fist to crush it, proceeding with heat vision to the face killing him. (It was a no holds barred fight Trailer of a possible fight to the death future and Wonder Woman had just been killed while Superman was charging in the sun for a while and he arrived angry.)
@@ricniks4619 In the comics, it's actually his nephew who was picked as champion, as he had a pure heart, but Teth, cunning and opportunistic person that he is, kills his nephew and steals his powers. Superman killing Zod was the right choice imo. He needed a reason to decide to not commit murder ever again. He basically killed the last of his species as a last resort to save an innocent family. Buuuuut, him killing a terrorist in the beginning of Batman V Superman was quite Stupid and made Zod's death completely unnecessary 😑.

@@eneyavorodecky I'm american and i couldn't careless about levi's joke. All these snyder stans are freaking out over anyone who says something about snyder that could possibly be interpreted as negative.
In the Shazam guy’s defense, he wasn’t wrong in saying that as far as he knew, the Snyder Cut didn’t exist. It didn’t. Hence why Snyder used a tens of millions to finish his cut. It wasn’t completed.
Yeah, I think some people forget this. Snyder was forced to leave the film midway through production to be with his family during a tragedy. The movie wasn't near completion, if you cobbled together everything he had then it was maybe half a movie. That's why they had to bring in a new director to finish it. There wasn't a film to be seen from just what Snyder had shot. After they decided to do the Snyder cut it required 3 more months of filming and 70 million dollars to complete.
The fact that his contract states he can never be defeated, ever, ruined it. His character literally wanted to kill kids, and he's gunna be an anti-hero now? Its fucking Cruella all over again.
"Black Adam has all the powers of Superman" Literally the only powers they share is flight and super strength, which a lot of DC heroes have. The only reason to say this is to purposefully draw parallels between the two characters to set up an eventual fight. The rock's ego was on full display with this film and it's marketing.
Honestly when he mentioned that I just know it's completely a lie because for example here's an actual power for Superman that they promoted as a new power "eating really fast" and also you know lack of research.
@@campaingsosa300He technically was never fired. His contract expired after Justice League and the negotiations to renew it broke down in 2018, with the relationship between him and the studio apparently being so bad that WB refused to let his version of the character return (the plan being to use the Flash film to replace him with Supergirl). After Discovery bought WB and the old leadership was gone, the Rock was able to get Cavil for the film. The interim heads in charge of DC films as a division of Warner Bros (before Gunn and Safran were given control of DC Studios as a separate division), paid Henry I believe $500k in total for cameos in both Black Adam and the Flash (the latter of which was cut; it would’ve been an alternate ending that showed that both he and Supergirl now coexisted in the DCEU) and verbally promised to develop Man of Steel 2 (even though there were two Superman movies in very early development, including Gunn’s), but they never gave him a new contract. When Gunn and Safran took over, they decided it was best to reboot the vast majority of the DCEU, which included Superman (which, in my opinion, was definitely the right call). So, Henry was never fired because he was never rehired for the job after his contract expired in 2017. His inclusion in Black Adam was a result of the Rock’s ego and the studio’s attempt to goose the box office revenue (hence why they were actively leaking his appearance).
@@campaingsosa300 They said it was because of the Ego of the Rock. Probably Dwayne Johnson was afraid if Henry Cavill continued as Superman he'd be overshadowed by Cavill.

The Rock is more recognizable and culturally significant than both Shazam and black adam combined. Yet his involvement with black adam couldn't save it. (Although The Rock had been producing mediocre slop for a while by then, so "the Rock fatigue" along side superhero fatigue and general lack of faith may have caused the flop) considering the rock's goofy, no losing, contract clause, and how mediocre at best both movies ended up being (didnt watch the shazam sequel) , nothing suggests that this hypothetical Adam v Shazam movie would've been any better.
There was a comic I saw recently of Black Adam floating above a bunch of villains while at a meeting table, one of them points it out and asks why he is just hovering above the ground. Adam says that it’s not due to his ego but because the literal gods that power him refuse to be at a level of elevation lower than a mortal being. So much depth to be taken from his powers and strained connection to the wizard but they just wanted to make a movie about a Superman that murders people.

Out of the Bond's I always found Brosnan the "Ryu" of them all, basically good in all categories whereas others excelled in certain areas (example, Dalton - perfect look, the "killer/assassin" Bond).
Zachary Levi was right. The Snyder cut didn't exist at the time. The movie would need to be completed to exist. Which WB obliged after the overwhelming demand for it.

The problem with Black Adam is the same with Harley Quinn. These characters don’t really make a lot of sense outside of the reasons behind their creation. Hawkman and Hawkgirl don't CONSCIOUSLY reincarnate themselves though. It's a curse as far as I know about their characters. @carn9507 true but then again you wouldn't really expect a multi millionaire block buster actor who figuratively strokes himself 24/7 to know anything more than the surface level of a DC character who isn't one of the main three.
He was marketing an obscure comic book character to get normies into theaters, which of course very likely won't have a point of reference, so he went with Superman who kills. Simple enough for the average audience member to understand.
You know that WB royally messed up when in the past 10 years B-C list characters like The Guardians, Ant-Man, and even Deadpool became bigger household names than the company name 'DC'.
Captain America & Hulk are the only characters from the MCU that were a household names, until they brought Spiderman in for Civil War. Thor & Iron Man both had cartoons in the 60s or 70s. But nobody (other than comic readers, obvs) knew who Black Widow nor Hawkeye were, until Avengers.
Was Zachary Levi even wrong about the Snyder cut not existing at that point in time? If I recall correctly they had to film new scenes for the finished product and was it more about allowing Snyder to finish his creative vision than some magic cut sitting in a vault somewhere.
It would’ve been nice to see him establish his rule over Kandaq by force in his first movie. Actually seeing a villain being successful in his own movie would’ve been great to see.

I think this movie shows the difference between a *passion* project and a *vanity* project. Having your character never lose a fight (and thus never creating stakes, resulting in a boring movie) is pretty vain. Black Adam should have been the villain of Shazam 2. Maybe Billy could remind him of his son and soften him from a villain to an anti hero and *then* he gets a solo film with the JSA. 🤷♀
I mean it wasnt a fail for WWE. He’s still on the board of directors at TKO and his childhood friend Nick Khan is still President of the WWE. So Dwayne’s still in a pretty good power position.
It's so fascinating how badly DC lost the superhero movie war. Like it wasn't even a war, more like small resistance in one small village of the Marvel country.
At the start? Yeah, DC was caught like a deer staring at your headlights. But towards the end, DC's movies like Joker, the Flash or even Black Adam here, were better IMO.
Dwayne is the biggest mark of them all. He is such a mark that he brought that prowrestling mentality in his movies. Like who would want to watch a movie where the protagonist always wins?

I watched this with my dad, he just turned 70. As soon as it ended he was like, "So, the Rock got a paycheck to stand in front of a green screen and make faces? I don't think he actually performed any of the action scenes."
The main disrespect is DC not allowing the writers of the animated movies that has been writing exceptional and cohesive stories for years, write the actual movies. Instead choosing to use writers and producers who just saw it as another movie. The writers and producers of the animated movies has been at ot for years and are true fans of the comic. And are the only ones that tell a actual proper story.

Dr. Fate should have had his own film. I liked the assymetrical design because the idea of Fate in a multi-universe has to include assymetrical possibilities.
He tried to be Ryan and make dead pool but dead pool works because he genuinely loves comics so the movie isn’t a showcase of how awesome Deadpool and Ryan is but how awesome the world and characters around him are
I would bet money the fact that he is never once referred to as Black Adam anywhere until after the credits was specifically directed by Johnson, so that audiences would see him playing himself as a badass coolguy superhero as opposed to him stepping into the role of an already established character
Why do you think in the last few years they have been slowly turning Black Adam into an anti hero, it was because DC really thought Dwayne Jonson´s Black Adam would become iconic and change the way everyone looked at Black Adam, obviously that didn´t work out

I don't think anyone can be as bad as Steven Seagal. He was a pos his entire career to everyone he met and made sure his porn fantasy girl starred in every movie he made. I'm really glad people hate him now he really deserves it. I can't find one person who worked with him who says he was fun to work with. "Sometimes the world doesn't need a white knight, it needs something darker." Wow that's a great idea, if only there were a famous DC property that essentially built the company down to the name meaning Detective Comics who often shakes the definition of what it means to be a hero who can act as this Dark Knight. You could actually gain interesting insight on using underhanded tactics as a way of doing real good, instead of saying "i'm not a hero" or "his darkness makes him better" all the time.
The Rock was never going to be comfortable not being at the center or at least very near it of a cinematic universe, and considering the character he was playing I knew it was time to fasten my seat belt and brace for some fuck shit when he was cast
Dwayne really had absolutely zero idea who or what Black Adam is supposed to be: an obstical for Shazam to overcome, and the fact that Dwayne makes it an obligated that his character can't lose a fight is in direct violation of what a villian is supposed to be. Its as if Dwayne just wanted a stake in the DCEU for him to do whatever he wanted to it without actually carring what that stake was or entailed
And you know what that works for black adam. Even tho he can be considered a diet Dr. Doom, that added complexity makes him a more interesting character than just "superman that kills" or "evil shazam". But there's a reason why the rock didn't get his success off of writing.

If only The Rock wasn't the worst, he'd be the perfect actor to be a superhero/villain. Big, buff, on-screen charisma, the works. He can be a character in a superhero movie, but he sucks and flexes his star power over writers and directors and all it does is make the story worse. Also, green lantern gets his shit pushed in regularly, but powers through it. That's the "willpower" in action. He could fucking never. Any story fails when the main character doesn't lose. There's no stakes, he'll just fucking win. Unless it's a comedy where he plays a superhero who's a douchebag in a world that's otherwise completely normal, the Rock can't be a superhero.

I like The Rock less and less. I already found anything he's starred in to be about him, rather than his character, and I do wonder how he kept getting more roles as they are all just him, playing him.
The whole thing about the Rock having a clause in his contract that he can never lose a fight is fucking ridiculous because he, as a pro wrestler, should know as well as anyone that having a babyface lose a fight is a great way to build drama and makes people love it more when they win in the end. And as a superhero fan. Like, Spider-Man 2 works so well because of the whole "Spider-Man no more!" element that he has to overcome. God mode is only fun for like five minutes, people want to see the good guy overcome a challenge, not just blast through every hypothetical obstacle like a killdozer through tissue paper.
The Rock just isn't that great of an actor. I feel like the only reason he did so well in movies was because he had already built up a dedicated fanbase in wrestling and because he came off as this super likeable guy. But you can't rely on the past forever and in recent years he's also done a lot of things that have ruined that likeable guy persona. So it's led to many fans turning on him.
I think he's descent at what he does but he doesn't have much range. He's boxed himself to doing the same role over and over. Maybe it's ego, maybe it's something else but Dwayne Johnson of the 00s early 10s would at least experiment with other genres and not averse to making a fool of himself on camera by taking roles like Southland Tales, Get Smart, or the Tooth Fairy. A number of those didn't work but he had a more diverse acting portfolio before he believed his own hype.
@@RandalReid I think he doesn't have much range to sustain a long career in the movies. He basically needs to play a big hulking action hero in all his films to sell them to his inbuilt WWE fanbase. But that doesn't necessarily sell much tickets in the movie world which works on various things coming together like acting, script, and direction.

Any way how you look at it, this comment was ignorant and stupid, but it was not my intention to say every single country in the Middle East has streets in poor conditions.

Don't forget Invincible

I can’t imagine being a writer when an actor has a clause in their contract that they can’t lose. Where do you go with that?
Well, he isn't the only actor who has such a clause in their contract.
you rewrite everything or most of something when your writing gets to the part that would logically result with him losing.
not ideal but only way I can think of to have creative freedom and not compromise at the same time. when you change stuff it can work but retconned so it feels off and unbelievable.
but if you think about it, with a meta understanding of said clause, you could have some pretty intense setups for other characters by developing them a bit, and then with the audience knowing that if they ever run into theRock they would just die, it creates a twisted tension for sub characters from the main character 😅 i think this has been done before a lot so its not new but for the writers trying to not make something terrible its the best option
most likely the point of the clause is ego related, but the loop hole is to make characters people actually care about instead and the risk of loss makes them more interesting.
of course this is still a terrible scenario but a bit of creativity can make it work, the real issue is this kind of concept existing in a super hero universe, and one that already has been established and on a 'villian?' so this kind of invincibility would just stagnate any future of the series which is the real issue imo, not a movie but the cinematic universe it's trying to build. especially when you can't just send said invincible character to another world to be absent from everything so there's actual potential for growth like they did with the hulk

Literally the only powers they share is flight and super strength, which a lot of DC heroes have.
"He's like superman but he kills and with no moral code"
"Yeah he's like Zod- I mean God!!"
Guess speed too.
Oh wait Shazam has those abilities. By his logic, Flash and Suoerman have the same abilities just because they both have speed.
To be fair, DC's did the animated treatment of Superman/Shazam/Black Adam in 2010
The fact that Henry Cavill was fired as Superman through no fault of his own, but because of The Rock’s ego, is just so unfair.
why was he fired?? serious question

The Rock isnt interested in making a good movie, he is only interested in making money. This is ironically why the movie did not make money

@@whosDaBun the rock is not interested in making good movies. If he was he wouldn't have contracts saying he has to have fights that are at least equal to everyone else. The thing that makes a hero interesting is overcoming weakness. Getting beat down and overcoming it. The rock never shows any weakness in movies because it's too important that he look cool all the time. People wanted to see BA vs Shazam. But the rock didn't think that Shazam was a good enough character for him to fight which is why he set it up for him vs Superman. He didnt give a sh-- that BA is Shazams main nemesis. That movie probably would have been interesting.
Also he has to be the good guy. Black Adam is at best a villain that occasionally does some good. But he is still a villain. but the rock for all his "I'm not a hero" schtick acts as a hero throughout the whole movie. You can't point to him killing people as him being bad either. It is wild how this movie changed the perception of The Rock’s irl character for so many people.
I mean not a lot of people knew who The Rock was outside of wrestling until he entered movies he was just "Famous wrestler". So a lot of people are just seeing his true colors bleed through.
i think it's career suicide

Imo it was the Hawaii fires. A lot of people watch comic movies but not that many are deep into it, his dip in popularity is far beyond just comic fans
his whole "hierarchy of power is about to change" shtick is fucking hysterical
Those clauses that they cant lose a fight in those F&F movies is....pathetic. You talk about a dangerously huge ego mixed with shallow artistic merit and insecurity.
One of the problems is that Johnson put in his contract that Adam never looses a fight which would've lost the movie money because villains & heroes alike loose in their fights.
It's actually funny and sad that a guy who's built like a rhyno is that insecure about looking weak. it's a joke that writes itself.

(Although The Rock had been producing mediocre slop for a while by then, so "the Rock fatigue" along side superhero fatigue and general lack of faith may have caused the flop)
considering the rock's goofy, no losing, contract clause, and how mediocre at best both movies ended up being (didnt watch the shazam sequel) , nothing suggests that this hypothetical Adam v Shazam movie would've been any better.
Should've been Shazam vs black Adam and a stand alone JSA movie. The JSA was the best part of the movie. Hawkman and dr. Fate were great.
There was a comic I saw recently of Black Adam floating above a bunch of villains while at a meeting table, one of them points it out and asks why he is just hovering above the ground. I wanna add as a wresting fan that almost right after this the rock tried to basically do the same thing in WWE, he made a big power play to be a TKO board member then tried to push his way past the royal rumble winner and the most anticipated story conclusion of the last decade to set up a "dream" match between him and Roman Reigns at wrestlemania and it was only through A LOT of fan backlash that that didn't happen (wether that was always the plan or not who knows, its just a good thing to add to the story)

The problem with Black Adam is the same with Harley Quinn. These characters don’t really make a lot of sense outside of the reasons behind their creation. Black Adam is the antithesis of Shazam, Harley Quinn was manipulated and groomed by the Joker. Having the first films featuring these characters without that being established leaves out a great part of their characterization. Unless you have excellent screenwriters that can actually make them compelling without their established canon and source material they aren’t interesting ( Joker being an excellent example of how a good screenwriter can pull this off )

If you don’t ever lose, you can’t ever have a kickass 1980s training montage!
Never thought about that but wow, great point!
Is noone gonna tell the rock that black adam is a villian
Why do you think in the last few years they have been slowly turning Black Adam into an anti hero, it was because DC really thought Dwayne Jonson´s Black Adam would become iconic and change the way everyone looked at Black Adam, obviously that didn´t work out
Venom at least has the excuse of being an established anti hero for decades. Black Adam had no such luxury
I mean, looking at the heroes in the DCU, Black Adam doesn't seem too bad
I thought he is an antihero

The Rock trying to make a simple villain the main character of an entire cinematic universe... 🤦🏻♂️
He wanted his character to be joker level...
My friends and I began calling The Rock "The Modern-Day Steven Seagal" and I'm willing to bet most of you agree
Edit: I hear all of your arguments, and I must admit: you're quite valid. But please, do not get harsh with this or throw around insults. Please.
Definitely.
It remains to be seen if the Rock is as bad as Seagal, but I get the idea.
I don't think anyone can be as bad as Steven Seagal. He was a pos his entire career to everyone he met and made sure his porn fantasy girl starred in every movie he made.
I'm really glad people hate him now he really deserves it. I can't find one person who worked with him who says he was fun to work with. Even the girls said he was touchy and trying to add nudity to the scenes during filming.
The Rock is an ego maniac who made too much money and is now completely corrupted by wealth and a feeling of superiority. He's not evil like Steven though
He's not that bad
@@Captain_Redfield I mean having it in your contract that you can't lose fights in movies is pretty egotistical/shitty
0:29 yeah no. I don't know about others, but Batman and Superman? Not in a billion years can any DC superheroes overtake them.
Yeah don't take it personally. This is coming of an ignorant, moronic, muscle who doesn't know anything about comicbooks.
The half-ass speech that kid gives to the locals to inspire them to fight with so underwhelming I almost passed out
Small note, the Snyder Cut did NOT exist when Levy said that, it had not yet been written and shot, that was only done after the cut was approved.
Snyder revealed reels of unfinished scenes first.
Dwayne is such a clown he doesn't understand Black Adams a poor mans Dr Doom 🤣
And you know what that works for black adam. Even tho he can be considered a diet Dr. Doom, that added complexity makes him a more interesting character than just "superman that kills" or "evil shazam". But there's a reason why the rock didn't get his success off of writing.
Did you call Black Adam that or just Dwayne's version?
Because that statement is an insult to the comics version.

You clearly don't know what
"Invincible flow" is it's genre where the main character is invincible and it entertains the masses and makes good money aswell
But what can you expect from someone who's an American
@@venerablewu8744 I just looked up "invincible flow" and got song lyrics. Then I tried "movie genre invincible flow" and got some other bullshit so it sounds like you're talking out of your ass.
But what else can you expect from the French?
Dave Bautista has him beat in acting ability and humility
Rock is like a character out of the Boys.
I like The Rock less and less. I already found anything he's starred in to be about him, rather than his character, and I do wonder how he kept getting more roles as they are all just him, playing him.
Exactly.
He's a dedicated actor and all, but man, it's just him in every movie with his one raised brow look.
The Rock's ego has gotten way too big for his own good.
@@Sujo89 He's been acting for nearly 25 years now.
