If they really wanted to copy Marvel, they should have gone all out and put someone at the helm who cared about the stories rather than just making money.
I genuinely feel so bad for Henry Cavill. The guy seems like a genuine, wholesome person who is passionate about his roles and gives everything he has into them. Yet shady studio executives keep screwing him over because they don’t know what they’re doing. First Superman, then Geralt from the Witcher. Two roles Henry absolutely loved and had to leave behind because of corporate scum
@@lamasizzy0599 No, because DC was proven to be a Warner Bros executive wanting Cavill out to replace him with Supergirl as shown in this video. Henry left The Witcher because they were butchering the source material and refused to listen to him. So he was treated unfairly and fired by one studio, and willingly left the other. This was not because he’s “toxic”. Most actors who’ve worked with him says he’s nothing but a great man who’s passionate about his work
@@shadowofdread7018 The Witcher has been a big hit for Netflix. It’s a smart idea to not replicate the source material exactly. See: Marvel, Mario movie, Uncharted, etc etc.
@@ps7372 Nah snyder cut actually understands what Justice League is about. WB being an dumb asf brings in Joss and dude thinking its a good idea to cutout cyborg character development and Flash reverse Time. Snyder only issue is he loves slow-mo which should be cut out as its too much in snyder cut
The Wonder Woman ending always puzzled me. It was such a breath of fresh air when Diana defeated the guy she thought was Ares and expected all the the bad guys to stop, but they didn't, and Steve telling her that sometimes bad people are just bad. It's like the studio went "Nah, screw the theme of the movie. People want a big, ugly cgi monster that contradicts the lesson the hero just learned. Brilliant!"
The original climax according to patty jenkins is she never fought ares. After the General luddendorf died, Steve go to stop the airplane and he died and thats it. The ending is more confusing because how come she suddenly want to help others when Steve is the one connection him to this world..... Its also contradict snyderverse where she supposed to not appeared until BvS event happened
That's exactly right. Steve literally says that sometimes people just suck and this isn't a god's fault, it's our fault. Then Aries dies and all the soldiers start hugging and I was like........ WTF IS THE MESSAGE OF THIS MOVIE? Also the ending makes no sense in a few contexts of the overall direction of the Snyderverse. She doesn't walk away from mankind AT ALL! So WTF is with her behavior in Metropolis when Doomsday arrives? And not to mention where was this bitch during WW2 and all the other wars if she loves mankind in the end and empowered by love; jumping to action in London at the sound of sirens?
@@lifeoftoast1864 Yeah. I could understand her walking away from humanity, as we were told in JL, if they kept the original ending. It makes sense why she would shut herself off after Steve dies. But no, it was all the evil God and everyone was actually good the whole time. So stupid.
I really do wish people would stop acting like Snyder had nothing to do with this. He still made every movie before Justice League. And even his own version of Justice League sucked; it was just longer and filled with unnecessary garbage like women singing on the beach to Aquaman. And he also made Rebel Moon completely on his own too and that show fails at basic storytelling. Zack Snyder SUCKS and people need to snap out of their denial and fanboyism towards the guy.
The DCEU failed because it came from a place of desperation rather than inspiration. Marvel studios earned its cinematic universe because it took years to build it up piece by piece with standalone films introducing the major characters before bringing them together in the first big crossover (The Avengers). DC/WB didn't have the patience to carry that out, and were more interested in catching up to their competitor as quickly as possible. To quote a comment I once read, "going from Man of Steel to Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is like going from Iron Man 1 directly into Captain America: Civil War." The final result was a cinematic universe that didn't feel as fleshed out or coherent as its competitor, especially with reactionary moves like trying to abandon Snyder's darker and more brooding tone in favor of emulating Marvel's lightheartedness. The biggest lesson to be learned in this is to walk before you can run.
At this point I think they should've connected Man of Steel with Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy Or the DC animated universe of movies they did should've been in live action Idk js my opinion
Originally the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern was going to be the start of the DCEU but because it flopped and was hated critically they changed their minds on making it a thing. Around that same time they were filming MOS which was originally suppose to be a else worlds self contained story that wouldn't have angered people. Until TDKR came out the same year as The Avengers which made $1.5 billion so they saw Superheroes movies could be extremely profitable and tried to copy the MCU by forcing MOS to be a cinematic universe but not put any of the work to get there because DC had more iconic characters than Marvel did at the time due to the DCAU & having Batman & Superman. Which was a bad idea from the start because if you watch MOS you will notice that the theme of the movie is Superman is the only supernatural thing in the world their is no Vigilantes, Gods, Green Lanterns, Meta Humans, etc. It was intended to be a self contained story but since WB got greedy they forced it into a franchise which ruined the continuity because how do you explain people not knowing about Batman? how do you explain people not remembering all the stuff that Wonder Woman did in 1984? how do you explain people not remembering Black Adam who killed the king of a major country?, etc without it being a plot hole or you retconning it?. Also you were correct they literally tried running before they could even walk their were a ton of executives fighting for power in the DCEU randomly announcing projects (Joker movie, Gotham Sirens movie, Black Manta movie, Cyborg movie, Black Superman movie, Static Shock movie, etc) or trying to speed run the development of DCEU like having a old Batman show up in the 2nd movie of the DCEU & him not acting anything like the traditional Batman we know.
Quoting from the Green Goblin in NWH: “Strong enough to have it all. Too weak to take it.” This summarizes WB, they had something great at their grasp but didn’t know how to manage it. Great work with the documentary 🎉
As a huge fan of these characters and DC content outside the DCEU, this is a heart breaking story. So much potential ruined by greed and poor planning.
The fact that THE ROCK got to decide that Black Adam shouldn’t be having a movie with freaking SHAZAM seriously just annoys me. This is like if Lex Luger got Batman and The Joker got freaking Superman.
Yeah, he didn’t help things and I’m a fan of his more of a fan of him back in his days as a wrestler and I thought he made a great black Adam, but the problem that the DC EU had at the end was it was a universe without Superman, Batman, or the Justice league really. Yes, I know Henry came back and did a cameo at the end of Black Adam and Ben Affleck came back to do the flash movie. But seriously, it was time for that universe to die because Warner Brothers had made up their mind that they were going to do no more Superman or solo Batman movies and because they don’t have Superman and Batman they just weren’t going to do a justice league movie either. And the Rock thoughtblack Adam was the character we wanted at the center of the universe. I like black Adam, I like the rock, but his character shouldn’t be the center of the DC universe. If you don’t have the Trinity there and you don’t have a green lantern anywhere you don’t have a DC universe.
@@robinnadjiZIt was funny because of how big of a deal they thought black Adam was going to be. Black Adam is a Shazam villain, and the rock thought he was too good for Shazam, so they tried to put him on equal level to Superman.
@@phabiorules not sure about that. the Rock wanted to be in the DCEU since MoS came out. that was a 10year gap, or so. his movie was ok. very cheesy in some areas though. the post credits scene was the one he was hyped about. and WB kicked Henry Cavill out after that. bunch of losers. let's be honest here: Dwayne Johnson is a good action movie actor. and super hero genre promises lots of action. so he was perfect for the role. especially a not-so-evil Black Adam. more of an Anti-hero. but the script kinda sucked. not sure how much at fault he is in all that.
@@jamiestewart48it’s interesting. My theory based on how Henry portrays himself and what we see of his down to Earth personality .. is that he doesn’t “play ball” W shitty but influential Hollywood execs, writers, etc and that has costed him. I think he doesn’t stand for bullshit but these execs have, in consequence, gotten him back by sabotaging him
It continues to be baffling and galling how he was treated _twice._ He handled everything with grace and good will and has only risen in my estimation. I have never cared for DC products/films, don't care about Batman or Superman or WW, etc, but Cavill made me a fan of _*his*._ His integrity as a person is what will bring me along to watch his movies and TV shows.
The one I feel pity for the most is Henry. I absolutely loved him as superman like he was to superman what Robert Downey junior was to Iron man. You couldnt picture anyone else playing those roles than them.
Although I'm not a fan of the movies he ended up in, I gotta say that his portrayal of Superman was great. He was an excellent choice for the role. Anyways, I'm happy to see his future endeavors like the Warhammer movie and Highlander. He'll likely excel in those as well.
Yeah despite him not being the Superman we all wanted, his performance and his portrayal of superman is still great I wished we could see him in a movie again
agreed, what they did to so many talented story tellers, with zero business sense. WB would rather keep us all dumb, rather than actually make a profit.
They tried to recreate the success of the MCU without acknowledging what made the MCU successful. Instead of creating a clear and concise plan for the first few years of storytelling, they rushed into things. And when that didn't work, they just decided to do the cinematic equivalent of throwing feces at the wall to see what stuck. And what makes it even more embarrassing is that the DCEU started with one studio owning the rights to the entire DC catalog, yet couldn't come close to measuring up to the success of the MCU, which for most of its run so far had the rights to less than half of their characters.
I will always miss Henry Cavill's Superman. He was my ideal Clark Kent since day one, and even when he had the WB executives against him, his delivery of Superman was charming, warm and full of hope every single time. Right person, wrong time I guess.
In fact every single actor in the DCEU (except probably Ezra Miller) was perfectly casted. I can't imagine Wonder Woman not being Gal Gadot and Affleck's batman was also great, it was all just a massive missed opportunity to make something great
Henry Cavill was a great Superman, we were lucky to have both him and Tyler Hoechlin playing that character at the same time... Sadly now Cavill's time is over, and Hoechlin only has one season of *Superman & Lois* (season 4) left to play Clark Kent. (The "Superman & Lois" crew returns back to filming in just a week, on the 11th of January, so it shouldn't take _too_ long before the season premieres, and it should be over before 2024 ends)
PHYSICALLY, he was a great Superman. But there was nothing in the way he was written or portrayed that made me think he's the embodiment of the Superman I personally know & love. He shouldn't be a conflicted guy, mulling over what he should do when it comes to being hero. He should be the shining example. Christopher Reeve and currently Tyler Hoechlin do that. Hell, he didn't even play Superman technically, but even Smallville's Tom Welling never lost sight of the fact that Clark Kent knows and sticks to his guns in terms of his moral compass. Cavill's didn't have any of that.
@@Sandouras at least for me, that he had to work with a script that didn't understand Clark's personality and even in that situation was able to make it enjoyable, because dude's personality is more like Clark's than the script he was given, it kinda work because of Cavill, anyone else would have been awful (my opinion)
You're right about MCU being a shell of what it was and a dissapointment across Marvel before, but IDK, why do you think the DCU wasn't off to a good start in the first place?
I’m not even sure I’d call it a “downfall” because that implies it fell from a place of strength. The DCEU started off with a limp (Man of Steel) and continued to get worse with each release. It’s more like “the trainwreck that took a decade”
The only problem is that they took so long to pull the plug. Lois Lane having Bruce Wayne's baby? That's nearly as bad as blowing Jimmy Olsen's head off in the desert for no reason.
I am a huge fan of the DC animated series. Great plot lines. Decent animation. Great voice acting. Very adult themes. I'm working my way through over 52 films. Good stuff!!!
They should've gotten the guys behind the DCAU, Batman the Animated Show, and Superman The Animated Show. Tim & the rest of those guys actually understand & care about the DC Characters.
Another thing you could have added in the beginning was where Man of Steel came from. It could be titled Origin of a New Universe “In 2008, after the Dark Knight was released in theaters, Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer were in the process of writing the Dark Knight Rises. But during that time, they were hit with a writer’s block, leaving them unable to continue working on the script. Therefore, Nolan suggested to Goyer and everyone else to take a week off. During that week David Goyer decided to come up with an idea for a Superman movie. His idea for the Superman would be that Superman arriving in the modern world would be the biggest event in human history. Afterwards, he would show Nolan who would then take the pitch to Warner Bros. Thus, a new Superman movie was greenlit, with Nolan recommending Zack Snyder as the director. Soon enough, Snyder was hired as the director for this Superman movie in 2010. He would get to work on bringing the Superman back to the big screen, with the name of the film being titled Man of Steel.
That's the story that they put out there. Apparently what really happened was WB was forced into making a Superman film in whatever form due to a legal battle with the Superman creator families (Siegel/Shuster) at the time.
@@joshsmith6043I don’t get why people like his movies beside some cool shots. I’m so happy for people to finally see Zach unleashed and what he did with Rebel Moon. 😂 what a fucking joke of a movie.
The DCEU had so much potential and could actually have been a proper competitor to the MCU, but Warner Bros rather care abt money then actual good well written movies.
Tbh, I didn't like where it was going since the ending of Man of Steel. As a fan of the comics, it just missed the mark. It wasn't really his vision as ppl claim it was. It was just Dark Knight Returns, Death of Superman, & Injustice mixed together. But it was lacking the impact those stories had. Superman's death came too early, meaning there would be no stakes in his sequels since he couldn't die again and had just faced his penultimate villain, Doomsday.
The main thing I got from this that… A) WB and everyone else this pertains to wanted to blow their load immediately rather than putting in the work to get to that climax. Y? Cuz Money! They noticed Marvel’s success and wanted in on that immediately. Which leads me to B) Instead of being original and leaning on all the lore/moods and so on that they have at their disposal, they chose to just try and copy Marvel’s homework while changing some things here and there to make it seem like it’s wholesomely theirs🤦♂️. Marvel put in the leg work to get to where they were whilst DC tried to skip all that and just go straight to Justice League…with a 2hr or less movie…for JUSTICE LEAGUE 🤦♂️!
David Goyer said a stand alone Man Of Steel 2 was supposed to happen, but apparently Warner panicked because of the criticism of the first and that it apparently didn't hit their huge expectations of grossing a billion.
The billion expectation has to be fake right? Like, not even WB is dumb enough to expect the first (1st) !!! movie of their "universe" to gross a fucking billion!?
Basically DC should have copied what marvel did with Thanos but with Darkseid. That's it. Could have been simple, put out single films that unite the justice league. I think WB should sell themselves..smh.. I like dc and marvel the same, but dc really needs to think hard before they make anything...smh..its like divorce parents fighting over the children
One point worth mentioning is that strangely enough, “The Flash” referenced events that only happened in the Snyder Cut of JL. I guess at that point WB had decided that it didn’t really matter what continuity they followed anyway.
@@FahadAyaz it’s been a while since I watched The Flash or the Snyder cut, but if I’m not mistaken they referenced Barry having traveled back in time a few minutes during the final battle, which only happened in the Snyder version.
The biggest error was allowing Zack Snyder to develop these movies from the beginning. Also, the reason why the Rock was on the push to have Henry Cavill return was because his manager (who is also his ex-wife) manages Cavill as well.
great insight into the politics of studio execs and the hurdles of managing great characters and content under an umbrella like WB. As a longtime comic book fan who wants to see these characters grow in the 21st century I truly hope lessons were learned by those in control of them. Thank you for a wonderful documentary :)
Really glad you're laying all of this out like this. Panicking WB execs are the problem, and I have no reason to believe that will change for the DCU. The theatrical cut of BvS was full of plot holes. Good job, WB execs. The Ultimate Edition is such a great movie. I don't understand fans that complained about Superman's suit and theme music in Black Adam. I was just grateful he was back. You summed it up quite nicely in the end.
@@maybetoby Too long for what WB wanted, Snyder had to work within the constraints. WB interfered too much, but the narrative itself was trash and uninspired

I think WB just had no faith in Zack. With the exception of Suicide Squad to my knowledge they didn't interfere with anyone else not Patty, or James Wan (at least not to the degree as with Zack) I can't see them interfering with Gunn since I'm sure they have more faith in him and WB would love to have that Guardians of the galaxy like success with their characters.
BvS. That's THE moment. How do you fuck up a movie with those two iconic characters so badly? The casual audience that drives the billion dollar box office said nah and checked out.
List of things the DCEU did right: 1. Hiring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, and Jason Mamoa List of things they did wrong: Literally everything else. Zack Snyder is an idiot. And we know that is true because only an idiot would allow Jesse Eisenberg to do THAT for 3 hours, make Superman gloomy, and make Batman an unabashed serial killer. Brilliant documentary, beautifully made. You deserve many more subs, mate.
Not gonna argue the lex thing, it can be perceived either way. But Superman finds his place in the world, the journey is incredibly good, he's literally battling himself at every turn, that makes him grounded and not 1 dimensional. Batman we see isn't a new batman, it's a 20year veteran who lost his robin. He is mad pissed. Towards the end of bvs he realises it, to me that's character growth. To each their own I guess
@@kiwiisafruit99what you are saying about superman is correct but Zack synder doesnt understand batman. He literally has 1 rule (which is no killing) and it gets broken instantly. If they wanted batman to break this rule and become a more pissed off batman then give him a character arc rather than just making him that way. Maybe have a batman film where robin dies at the end or something which causes batman to start killing people now. Batman can be a killer if they wanted but for the fans to understand this change he needs to go through this character change from the batman we know to the gloomy killer batman. This is just my thoughts im sorry if this seems like some personal attack but it isnt lol. Im just some loser who replies to comments at midnight thats all 😂
@@HH29.17 Pretty much. Snyder jumped the gun with Doomsday, Superman's death and Batman being a killing psycho. That would be a phase 2/3 movie, not the second movie.
It's kinda crazy to think that yes, this WAS the second most successful shared cinematic universe right after the MCU, and it was this bad It all began when Christian Bale didnt come back as Batman, and they made Superman super gritty. That's when everything went wrong immediately
For me Batman v Superman killed the DCEU. I will always remember how stupid the whole "wait your mom is martha too? Did we just become best friends?". It was so unbeleivably stupid. Superman was always the upbeat, optimistic hero, and the whole movie is just Superman being a dick until he realizes batman's mom is also named martha.
I think the main reason for dceu's downfall was WB's strong urge to copy and be like Marvel when they should have been original and what they really are . They just fcuked everything up . 😢
:') Came to the comment section to realize everything that needed to be said had been said. Thank you for the breakdown, and for acknowledging this enough for us all to move on. what a damn shame.
Snyder's DCEU movie is like a bunch of cool video game walpapers and cinematics stiched together. Its full of metaphors and allegories but it lack soul.
That whole "execs want to protect their bonuses" things is frequently the main problem in many, many businesses... I've seen this first hand dozens of times...
He still missing a lot of snyder interview and con. For example you can watch Man of Steel supernova con in Disney where snyder said that WB execs told him they want clark kent grew up in metropolis and he said the lore of superman is he grew up in smallville so he asked nolan to help him, nolan later purchased a land and they built kent's farm and kent's house. This is important because as far back as Man of Steel, WB already meddling. Another interview is from BvS, where snyder said he proposed superman sequel to WB execs and the movie ended with kryptonite arrived on Wayne manor, suddenly those execs eyes changed and they demand batman in the whole movie. If you bought BvS Steel book, you can see concept art of metallo. Metallo supposed to be villain and not doomsday but they changed it in pre-production because of JL where batman must recruiting JL members
There is an underground rumor only...going around that Snyder is seeking personal funding to perhaps continue the Snyder DCEU on Netflix; continue the movie series on that platform and have WB execs far away from the projects. Perhaps a JL2 with the Darkseid angle is still alive; even a Green Lantern (John) or other legendary DC characters on a possible horizon?
It's very biased. Studio meddling wass the main problem but not enough light is put on the poor planning. The studio wanted to rush a universe but snyder was also rushing his own movies. You cant tell me WB execs who know jack shit about comics were the ones who decided to have death of superman and dark knight returns rolled I to one movie WHILE having a completely unrelated plotline that added nothing. The problems all started from batman V superman. It was simply a bad film. Warner bros execs are idiots who panicked immediately and forced Joss Whedon to try and sweep snyder's vision under the rug. BvS being bad is Snyder's fault. The universe failing as a whole is warner bros fault.
@@JBoxy7 No no. What you want is a biased video. You want me to share your own opinion on the planning. That is an opinion, not a fact. I just shared the facts. WB hired Snyder. Fact. Snyder made a bad movie. Opinion. One is a factual statement the other is an opinion stated as a fact. This was a factual documentary, not sharing opinions on the movies themselves. That is for the audience to decide, not me.
There was no need for "Justice League" to be years away. I had no problems with it following after "Wonder Woman". This only told me that Snyder had no plans to extend the franchise narrative like the MCU did with the Infinity Stones arc. It was Warnes who had fucked it up by hiring Joss Whedon to finish "Justice League" by undermining Snyder's plans for the movie.
@@DRush76 Gonna have to disagree. They needed more solo films before Justice League. Similar to the MCU. That was clearly a winning formula. After Man of Steel they needed a solo Batman movie. Instead they rushed. Could have had Superman vs Batman after that. Then Wonder Woman . Could have even went with more solo films after that. Suicide Squad wasn’t even really needed. Let alone the third movie in the universe. They wanted that big Avengers team up pay day way too fast.
If they actually waited years they could've start releasing justice League now. Which could coincide with mcu's current decline in viewership. They could've capitalize. But oh well hindsight is always 20/20

Didn't I read in one article that BVS was originally Man of steel 2, and WB saw the success of the avengers and wanting to rush the justice league right in? I don't think BVS was suppose to be a part of his story arc..
@@jhoannastan I'm not sure why WB was so butthurt on it in the first place, everything we could've had, but they choose to rush it. I can definitely see this in a alternate world. Also It really quite sad and annoying that people refuse to understand this.
It is such a crime what these people done to these movies and how much they fucked it all up, I hope they are truly ashamed and understand they have no vision and should leave the movie business before they screw up more peoples work.
This is more entertaining than the DCEU itself. The truth is that although WB is the main one to blame, Snyder and his fans is also responsible for this shit.
DC has been its own worst enemy in the translation of the comic books to the big screen. They let Marvel get years ahead of them; they cast different actors to play the same characters in different movies undermining any sense of continuity or connectivity by the fans; they tried too quickly to create an analogous response to the MCU not recognizing the decades of work that Marvel put into making that leap. DC had a challenge to begin with where Marvel had a tradition in its source comic book material of plots where complex heroes--not villains--were central to the stories, which also lent to cultivating real fans; DC, on the other hand, had comic stories that were much more dependent on the villains. it is why the Rogues Galleries of Batman, Superman, and the Flash are so well known compared to those of Marvel Heroes. The first question anyone asks about a DC movie is: "who's the bad guy?" That's because DC has cultivated its stories around the heroes foiling them as opposed to struggling with their own demons which Marvel is soooo good at putting its heroes through. Stan Lee left a great legacy for screenwriters to pick up. Ironically, it was the DC Animated series under Bruce Timm, where the greatest transition for DC was made. And it was a formula very similar to what worked for MCU live movies: take your time; develop the characters; develop their relationships; let conflicts be real and let some business stay unfinished. The vocal talents used in the DC animated world were brilliant as well. It is not a coincidence that the actor with the longest continuity for a DC character was Kevin Conroy's Batman. It's sad that WB never learned a thing from DC's strongest franchise to help its weakest.
This doesn't seem to me like a documentary covering the DCEU. It's more like a Snyderverse fan covering the history of drama between the Snyderverse fanbase and DC.
0:47 Dawn of the DCEU 11:09 Justice League 15:27 Changing Direction 21:08 Release the SnyderCut 24:49 Restore the SnyderVerse 28:40 The [Redacted] Squad 32:57 Warner Bro. Discovery 42:18 DC Studios Redacted because how sensitive the word is to some, and especially RUclips itself.
Great video brother. Appreciate all your efforts over the years in covering all things DCEU. Was a great trip down memory lane, especially that announcement of BvS by Harry Lennix at Comic Con. Zack Snyder will forever be a gracious champion of a human loved by the people. Can't wait to see Rebel Moon tomorrow!
Rebel Moon is distasteful and extremely overrated, plus, Zack Snyder was actually never a comic book fan from the start, the only reason he was chosen is probably only known to WB, but of course, his movies are never really that great except for Justice League Snyder Cut, but other than that, lot of his movie are just emo edgelord that doesn't have anything original, so sorry Snyder fan
I’m only five minutes in so I may be jumping the gun: Already beating a dead horse constantly bringing up studio interference. While I agree studio meddling plays a huge part the negative end result, there’s a commonality in nearly all Zach Snyder movies. The dude cannot tell a complete narrative in under 150 minutes. That’s a big issue. His need for 20% of the movie being in slow motion doesn’t help either. 🤷♂️
It’s hard to be anything but sad when we get to the part where Henry had to publicly rescind his post about returning as Superman. It remains the reason why I have no interest in Superman Legacy or James Gunn’s DCU. But that’s just me. I’m delighted for those who are looking forward to it and I’ll try to watch it with an open mind and heart in 2025.
Can I just say THANK YOU, I've been following the channel for a while but never expected you to gift us with a video essay of this quality. Have a great Christmas and keep up the amazing work I genuinely appreciate it.
I suppose it’s fitting to have the DCEU start in 2013 and wrap up in 2023. A 10 year run that was sadly very messy. It’s a shame since the DCEU had potential just like anything else but so many factors played into its downfall. Personally I’ve been wanting a reboot for awhile and I’m looking forward to and hoping for the best for the DCU Still though it’s still a shame the DCEU failed and I’m really sorry to all of the fans who genuinely loved this universe and wanted more. Hopefully things will turn around for the future of DC
Snyder set the DCEU up to fail with BvS and the unfaithful to the characters story, poor storytelling, etc. that he established the universe with, everything after that was a massive case of too many cooks in the kitchen.
I do not think Snyder should be at the forefront of DC, because he doesn't understand the characters. That being said, Its frustrating how the studio kept getting on his way. Even if I don't like him it would have been cool to see his full vision
Nah bruh you can’t blame studio interference for shit like Killer Batman, Leto Joker, Jolly Rancher Lex, immediately killing off Jimmy Olsen and Dick Grayson, and “ancient lamentations”.
Yeah, the one thing WB were right about were wanting to remove Snyder. While they did it in the dumbest way possible, their instincts there were right.
I understand all the blame on WB executives and I absolutely agree with it. However, there’s one thing Snyder is solely to blame: The Dark Knight Returns and The Death of Superman should’ve never been crammed into one single film. That was disrespectful to the source material and comic book fans. Batman V Superman is atrocious in its vision NOT because of rewrites or trimming. We should’ve gotten at least a Man of Steel trilogy before bringing Bats to face off. Even Batfleck deserved his own film, maybe two before that. Man of Steel was great and deserved a proper sequel.
Thank you for the in-depth documentary video. This brought me back memories through the past ten years since Man of Steel. The studio interferences on Warner Bros' hand is what made DCEU go downhill. I am reminded of Pepper Potts' words in Endgame: "We're going to be okay. You can rest now!" Rest In Peace DCEU, thank you for everything (2013-2023).
Solid video. Thanks. Like a house, building a franchise starts with strongs foundation which are not done in hurry and with greed. Otherwise it collapses. Rushing for a group move instead of installing characters properlly was a severe lesson for WB.
Snyder cant tell a story to save his life. Despite all the meddling of the execs, he proved that he doesnt get the characters he was using. Batman has oracle like visions (when he is supposed to be a pragmatist and realist who doesnt believe in such stuff) and needs to steal his detective work, Superman is gloomy, kisses his girlfriend while people are trapped in the ruins of metropolis and kills people. The plots were shallow, boring and derivative. A CGI Thanos had more character than anyone of Snyder's.
Not just little to no screen time together, but the timing wouldn't fit either, since Bruce more or less immediately began his search of Aquaman right after Clark's funeral
Great summary. Only really a fan of Man of Steel and even with all the interference I still don't understand the Snyder fandom. I like Gunn and I'm excited to see what he does, but superhero fatigue is hitting Marvel and DC hard, so I'm intrieged how he solves it.
Part of the reason why Henry Cavill couldn't appear in anymore DC films after Justice League was because of his deal with Netflix in 2018, which prohibited him from doing other films outside of Netflix between 4 to 5 years, all so he could do the Witcher series (since he is a fan of the books and the games). After 2018, the only projects that Cavill did were Enola Holmes and The Witcher. The only exception to the rule was the Snyder Cut, which apparently was in Cavill's contract.

This was utterly fascinating. Makes me think of the meme where it’s Michael Fassbender/Magneto talking to Mystique (labeled DCEU)while she lays in his bed, and it’s like “show me your biggest villain” and it shows Darksied, and magneto goes, “I said your biggest villain” and it just shows the WB logo😂 “Perfection.”
Great video, I just have two points to make in addition to what has already been well discussed - 1) Revisionism makes Synder a hero, but it’s important to remember that his original work in MoS and BvS too had their share of detractors - mostly for being too dark and faithful to the comics. As a result a lot of the casual movie goers felt out of place as they didn’t understand and enjoy the comic book references. This is particularly where the MCU did very well in Phases 1 and 2, by turning obscure comic book heroes into household names by just making the films more accessible to everyone. 2) A lot of the DCEU’s diminishing returns also tallies with an overall superhero fatigue in the audience - which is why even the MCU off late has been struggling horribly. And like it or not, the ‘multiverse’ concept that both Marvel and DC have adopted seem cool in terms of fan service initially - by bringing in different iterations of popular characters on screen at the same time - but have also turned out to be horribly confusing and bloated, simply exhausting the bulk of the casual viewers. In general, people are tired of superheroes. That only makes it lamentable that WB did not fully cash in on the superhero craze when it was at its peak. Nothing Gunn does now can ever match up to the original hype going into BvS.
uhm… snyder’s films weren’t criticized because “too dark” and “too faithful to comics”. Audiences don’t have problems with dark films, as Nolan and other filmmakers proved. BvS was simply “pompous” and too pretentious, without the solid writing and directing that made other movies shine. About the comic book accuracy.. that went right out the window pretty soon.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a Gunn or Snyder fan I think we can all agree that WB sucks and they fucked up. They fumbled the bag hard.
Exactly. You're right with that remark.
One of WB's worst loss was Chris Nolan leaving the studio... What a joke.
It's like they wanted to fail . . .
Really sad what happened to him. I wonder how the DCEU would be if he got to finish his entire vision
Have you ever stopped to think that maybe Henry is the problem? Not saying he is but when multiple studios have problems with you then…?
This happens all the time to ordinary people every day

No, because DC was proven to be a Warner Bros executive wanting Cavill out to replace him with Supergirl as shown in this video. Henry left The Witcher because they were butchering the source material and refused to listen to him. So he was treated unfairly and fired by one studio, and willingly left the other. This was not because he’s “toxic”. Most actors who’ve worked with him says he’s nothing but a great man who’s passionate about his work

@@boboboy8189 I don't see the contradiction.

Well said. 👍
But "sometimes you have to run before you can walk", Tony Stark, 2008.😂
At this point I think they should've connected Man of Steel with Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy
Or the DC animated universe of movies they did should've been in live action
Idk js my opinion
Actually, No. Green Lantern was to start but it flopped and combined with avengers 1.5 Billion, The dceu became rushed

The fact that THE ROCK got to decide that Black Adam shouldn’t be having a movie with freaking SHAZAM seriously just annoys me. This is like if Lex Luger got Batman and The Joker got freaking Superman.
*Luthor.
Lex Luger was a pro wrestler.
The rock hyping up Superman vs Black Adam is still the funniest thing that happened in this universe
He was really hyping up a post credit scene before the movie even came out and since the movie was failing WB started putting the scene in tv spots💀
Why is it funny that would’ve been dope.
@@robinnadjiZIt was funny because of how big of a deal they thought black Adam was going to be.
Black Adam is a Shazam villain, and the rock thought he was too good for Shazam, so they tried to put him on equal level to Superman.

let's be honest here: Dwayne Johnson is a good action movie actor. and super hero genre promises lots of action. so he was perfect for the role. especially a not-so-evil Black Adam. more of an Anti-hero. but the script kinda sucked. not sure how much at fault he is in all that.

Horrible corporate greed at its finest
agreed, what they did to so many talented story tellers, with zero business sense. WB would rather keep us all dumb, rather than actually make a profit.
Agreed
HAHAHAH, WHO CARES.
The downfall? The DCEU never took off to begin with
I will always miss Henry Cavill's Superman. He was my ideal Clark Kent since day one, and even when he had the WB executives against him, his delivery of Superman was charming, warm and full of hope every single time. Right person, wrong time I guess.
In fact every single actor in the DCEU (except probably Ezra Miller) was perfectly casted. I can't imagine Wonder Woman not being Gal Gadot and Affleck's batman was also great, it was all just a massive missed opportunity to make something great
He was gloomy and emo. What exactly charmed you about him?
No matter how big The Rock's ego may be, I have to give credit to him for bringing Henry back, even if it didn't go anywhere.

Another thing you could have added in the beginning was where Man of Steel came from. It could be titled Origin of a New Universe
“In 2008, after the Dark Knight was released in theaters, Christopher Nolan and David S.

It was just Dark Knight Returns, Death of Superman, & Injustice mixed together. But it was lacking the impact those stories had. Superman's death came too early, meaning there would be no stakes in his sequels since he couldn't die again and had just faced his penultimate villain, Doomsday.

Ah, a nice stroll down Memory Lane…with good memories and difficult memories. A wonderful documentary, well done, my friend. :)

WB was greedy af. Want an equivalent MCU in a fraction of the time. Justice League should have been years away. Ffs

I don't think BVS was suppose to be a part of his story arc..
it supposed to be a 3part story film for Superman but WB got jealous to MCU that they made it into a shared universe.
@@jhoannastan I'm not sure why WB was so butthurt on it in the first place, everything we could've had, but they choose to rush it. I can definitely see this in a alternate world. Also It really quite sad and annoying that people refuse to understand this.

This was just a perfect summary, didn't miss a thing. Amazing work!! Left feeling a little sad.
Marvel is already playing with multiverse while dc is still busy with reboots.. WB sucks
I literally started crying when Henry's announcement video back started playing 😭

Rebel Moon sucks.
Who asked?
Yes 💯 agree
Or Snyder is remembered as a man who never grew out of his emo teenage edgelord phase.
Rebel Moon is distasteful and extremely overrated, plus, Zack Snyder was actually never a comic book fan from the start, the only reason he was chosen is probably only known to WB, but of course, his movies are never really that great except for Justice League Snyder Cut, but other than that, lot of his movie are just emo edgelord that doesn't have anything original, so sorry Snyder fan
if only WARNER BROS did did what miles morales said "i'm gonna do my own thing " it would had worked for them, instead of copying marvel
Right, wanting 2 rush 2 Justice League was a bad move & making it comical
I’m only five minutes in so I may be jumping the gun: Already beating a dead horse constantly bringing up studio interference. While I agree studio meddling plays a huge part the negative end result, there’s a commonality in nearly all Zach Snyder movies. The dude cannot tell a complete narrative in under 150 minutes. That’s a big issue. His need for 20% of the movie being in slow motion doesn’t help either. 🤷♂️
the guy will say that it’s just an opinion and you are biased 🙄
It’s hard to be anything but sad when we get to the part where Henry had to publicly rescind his post about returning as Superman. It remains the reason why I have no interest in Superman Legacy or James Gunn’s DCU. But that’s just me. I’m delighted for those who are looking forward to it and I’ll try to watch it with an open mind and heart in 2025.
Can I just say THANK YOU, I've been following the channel for a while but never expected you to gift us with a video essay of this quality. Have a great Christmas and keep up the amazing work I genuinely appreciate it.
Thank you so much! I hope you have a great Christmas too!!
Biggest mistake handing Snyder the keys to set the tone smh
Which I would say isn’t Snyder’s fault. But WB’s for letting him do that.
I suppose it’s fitting to have the DCEU start in 2013 and wrap up in 2023. A 10 year run that was sadly very messy.
It’s a shame since the DCEU had potential just like anything else but so many factors played into its downfall. Personally I’ve been wanting a reboot for awhile and I’m looking forward to and hoping for the best for the DCU
Still though it’s still a shame the DCEU failed and I’m really sorry to all of the fans who genuinely loved this universe and wanted more. Hopefully things will turn around for the future of DC
They were too stubborn to quit lmao, it was dead the second they released Justice League 🤣 the last few years it’s been a zombie
Don't hold your breath
Snyder set the DCEU up to fail with BvS and the unfaithful to the characters story, poor storytelling, etc. that he established the universe with, everything after that was a massive case of too many cooks in the kitchen.
Henry is a nerd and should be a producer on this sort of content since he’s so passionate about the source material
I need to sit down for this first
Great video and summary. Utterly depressing and demoralizing, but well put together.
Much appreciated!
Jimmy Olsen died?
@@dominiquejones3805 start of BvS 💀🔫
Yeah, the one thing WB were right about were wanting to remove Snyder. While they did it in the dumbest way possible, their instincts there were right.
I understand all the blame on WB executives and I absolutely agree with it. However, there’s one thing Snyder is solely to blame:
The Dark Knight Returns and The Death of Superman should’ve never been crammed into one single film.
Agree 💯 %
Meanwhile, DCAU silently cooked some bangers
Well thats nothing to brag about. They always been well with animation. We are talking about live action though.
Downfall? There was nothing built in the first place.
Solid video. Thanks. Like a house, building a franchise starts with strongs foundation which are not done in hurry and with greed. Otherwise it collapses. Rushing for a group move instead of installing characters properlly was a severe lesson for WB.
Was the DCEU ever good, though? Most of the movies within it are just plain mid.
Pride and ego DESTROYED the DCEU. Warner Bros. NEVER realizes what they have!
Ive never been on board with Bruce and Lois having a kid, seeing that im pretty sure they don't have really much to very little screen time.
Yeah, only smart decision made by WB.
This is why mcu is better. Cause they never listened to the critics. They just kept on going. Until we witnessed their being top of their peak
MCU was better back then.IT went downhill right after 2019. Today no one is getting excited in watching any upcoming Marvel movies.

Very well done. But also very sad. Grateful for the handful of great DC films we did get.

Lol absolute gold and accurate
Great video, I just have two points to make in addition to what has already been well discussed -
1) Revisionism makes Synder a hero, but it’s important to remember that his original work in MoS and BvS too had their share of detractors - mostly for being too dark and faithful to the comics.
@@HumbleSiPilot77Snyder did not understand DC material so stop sucking his dick aight 😂
