Thanks for the comments, everyone! What's coming up as an interesting theme is everyone thinking it wrong to consider the Nikon Z50 as a "beginner camera." Let's be clear that Nikon officially classifies that Z50 as an "entry-level camera." IMO, a beginner camera is simply easier for beginners to grasp and start shooting with right away; "beginner" does not mean that the camera has lesser quality or features than any counterparts.
I’m no beginner. Been a Nikon user for decades. The Z50 is an excellent camera. It’s my go to camera , coupled with the 16-50 it’s an unbeatable combination, way in front of my ZV-E10 and Alpha 7 111 for ease of use and picture quality. BTW. it’s pronounced NicK-on ….not NyeKon …
What's the other lens that you can recommend with Nikon z50 i jave both of the kit lenses , and honestly they are great , but i do have to switch on occasion , is there something in between , 50mm 1.8 or 24-70mm ? Have you tried those on z50
@@dystopianrunner5617 I have both and they work great with the Z50. Juat remember that the Z50 is a crop sensor camera (APS-C) and the 50mm as well as the 24-70mm are full frame lenses, so they would behave like a 75mm and 36-105mm respectively. You might have to take a few steps back due to the magnification, but the lenses are great on the Z50 and my Z6II. I have the 50mm F1.8 for the Z and the F mounts. Both are great and not expensive.
I have been a photographer for 32 years and this is also a good choice as a lightweight travel camera for more experienced photographers. I have the two lens kit and I have no doubt that the Z50 can create beautiful 16x24" prints. I completely agree with you that beginners moving up from smart phones would love the Z50.
Yes, this is a great compact camera, even for non-beginners. There's plenty of tech and features on it that would satisfy even pros or more experienced photogs.
I like the screen flipping down because in videos your eyes are perfectly centered and you’re not looking at a side. The tripod problem can be solved with a small grip that “moves” the tripod mount to the side and it works well!
I stood in front of this camera Z50 and the A6400 right at the same shop which I returned my LUMIX G85 due to its poor auto-focus. I can tell you, the Z50 looked appealing and seems good but it's only drawbacks... It can't support a GIMBAL and yet it lacks IBIS. BTW. if I can say anything, go for Sony A6400. It's the best hybrid. Z50 may be the next.
Very nice review. I am a professional photographer who owns several Nikon full-frame DSLRs. I bought the Z 50 as a travel and daily-use camera, but I could see using it on many of my paid photo jobs. It performs that well.
I got mine for the exact same purpose! I think it will be a solid compact travel camera. And I agree the quality and performance is so great I have started using it for other things as well.
Thanks all of you! Your comments are very helpful. I just purchased a Z50 with the 16-50mm lens for $390! The kit is in like new condition. I’m a Nikon DSLR shooter, and think that the Z50 will be an excellent introduction to mirrorless for me.
Hello! Got my Z50 a year ago. I have not used it that much. After watching your video, I started going out and what an amazing little camera. I am new to photography. I am looking forward to use it as much as possible
As a D750 and Z6 shooter, I love the Z50 for a light walk around camera to carry everywhere. The FTZ adapter works great with modern Nikon lenses but I also really like the third party adapters which are more streamline for adapting those old school Nikkor manual focus primes. And with focus peaking, I'm using these old classics more and more!
Glad to hear the Nikons are working well for you. I tried out the Z7 recently and was very impressed. I think the Nikon Z7 or Z6 paired with the Z50 gives you a nice arsenal of cameras to use. Happy shooting!
Shoutout to you for still commenting on replies people give on a video that is more then a year old!! Also thanks for the review, very clear and simple, i think this solidified my choice!
I've had my Z50 for a few weeks now and as a seasoned photographer I bought it for a small and compact travel camera and excited to use it more once we can travel again.
I purchased one a month ago and I love the quality of the kit lenses I can easily pop the camera with the kit lens in my center console and pop the telephoto in my glove compartment. It is nice to always have a good camera system with me when I am on the road now!
Nice review! Although Nikon is marketing this camera as a "beginners" camera, it does have features and benefits of a more advanced camera. The kit lenses, made mostly of plastic, are very small and light, and produce very good results, even in less than ideal lighting situations ( bump up the ISO). Additionally, Nikon's AF-P F mount lenses, such as the 18mm-55mm, 10mm-20mm, and 70mm-300mm, are also relatively small and light, focus silently and quickly, and work really well with this camera. Nikon's ergonomics, for me, are the best. Finally, if you are moving up from a cell phone, this camera is much smaller than a camera like the D7500 or D500, which will be appealing for lots of people. This camera is also smaller than the D3500, also a great camera for beginners. The lack of IBIS is not a big deal for me, as I like to shoot mostly stills. and the kit lenses have VR.
Thanks Richard! I agree on pretty much all fronts. I appreciate the lightweight and compact nature of the build, plus Nikon's colors -- they're among the best. Appreciate the comment!
I'm not a beginner but after having the Z7 for a year and loving it very much, I decided to go ahead and get the Z50 to go along with it. I've seen a lot of great images and reviews of the Z50 so I'm sure it'll fit well with me :-)
Nice! I suppose it should have been clarified that even though this camera is branded as an "entry-level camera," it's by no means just for beginners. There are enough newer features on it to make it a great camera for pros too.
I have just purchased a NIKON Z50 and looking forward to using it. My other camera is a NIKON D90. I like the fact it is much lighter and smaller plus the mirrorless aspect offers (thus far at least) better quality photos.
I’ve been toying with the idea of getting into photography as a hobby and a way to connect to my father... it’s been a rough year for my family. I think I’m gonna take the leap and get a Z50 ‘cause of this review, hahaa-
Agree with others here the Z50 is not a beginner camera but more enthusiast to advanced. Also, Small Rig has a bracket for the Z50 that allows the tripod to be offset mounted without obstructing the flip screen. While the Z50 is not a hard camera to learn on I'd certainly not classify it as beginner. The images from the native lenses are sharp and with colors that Nikon is known for. This little camera is a gem and it functions great with my F mount lenses using FTZ adaptor including my Tamron lenses. Kudos to Nikon on this one, its a winner. Now for my only real issue, and that is the viewfinder shows the last image taken with continuous H which is 11 fps but you can't see or track the actual focus on what your subject is if it's moving. Hopefully, Nikon can fix that with a firmware update.
Thanks for watching, and for your comments and tips. Overall, I think the Z50 is a great camera and it makes me excited for the Z-line and what future cameras Nikon will make. Happy shooting!
Stumbled across your channel and I enjoyed the review. The Z50 is my first ever camera purchase I got last month. I also bought the $250 lens adapter and a few used lenses so I’m excited to learn this camera and start shooting. Stay blessed
15:32. I started with a bridge camera before 2004, then a D70 and then to a D200 in 2006, D700 in 2008 and then an embarrassing amount of mirrorless cameras that never quite left me as happy as the D700. I also had a few other Nikon DSLR cameras like the D750 but today I’m finally settled down with Z7 and shortly Z 50 to pair with it. I think in a few more years Nikon will be very well positioned with mirrorless cameras. Sony got the jump on everyone and I also had the a7R III but I can say for myself the Z7 makes me happier and I’m finally back to the days when I was as content with the D700 :-)
That's a nice progression of cameras. I left Nikon for the Canon 5D Mark III, and even though I have Sony and Fuji mirrorless, I would really love to stick with Canon. Hopefully, they can catch up with their mirrorless line -- I feel like even Nikon has a leg up on them right now!
@@Gemini_Connect I'm not really sure what Canon's strategy is. I fully expected them to give it their best when I entered the full frame mirrorless market but I was surprised they didn't seem to take it as seriously as I thought they would (with the EOS R). They are the market leader and have great brand recognition so that's an advantage for them. Maybe they're focused more on what will sell to the masses instead of what enthusiasts are interested in. I'm not really sure. They seem to be at one extreme or the other. High end pro DSLR for working professionals or low end budget cameras with not much in-between for now. I think they made a big mistake not coming up with a single lens mount for APS-C and FF mirrorless bodies, but I think that's where Nikon had the benefit of not being in that market until later (they could end up using the very same excellent Z mount for both FF and APS-C bodies.
I have been a Nikon DSLR user for more than a decade. Getting on in years, I have been looking for a small, light weight camera for carrying around. Point and shoots doesn't quite cut it, and I had almost zero success with mobile phone cameras and fill-flash. The Z50's order winners are: 1: Small and light enough to fit in my fanny pack. Perfect to holidays and sightseeing. 2. Compatibility with my existing Nikon equipment, not just the F-mount lenses. There's the flash units etc as well. If Nikon were to make a real pancake lens eg 24mm/1.8 DX I would definitely buy it. My biggest gripe with the kit lens is it's f/6.3 and all the existing fast S-mount lenses are big and heavy. In conclusion, the Z50 is not just a beginner's camera. It has many features and functions to are also sought for by enthusiasts as a small, light camera for carrying around. Like your video. Thanks
Great video on the Z50! I’m currently selling my D7100,D5300 and a few more Nikon film cameras in order to buy a Z50! My main camera is D500 and I think the Z50 will compliment it !
Problem solved. I made a 'C' shaped tripod mount adaptor from parts I got at the Walmart hardware section. I can view the flip down screen while on a tripod. It cost me about ten dollars and about five minutes to make. Unlike the smallrig adaptor, the centre of gravity is kept under the original tripod screw mount.
That is awesome! I'm not much of a handy-person, but it makes sense that you could McGyver something together if you're good with hardware and tools. Glad it worked out for you!
@@jmlr2011 The mount I made does not block the screen and keeps the balance under the centre of the camera and not off to the side like the smallrig mount does.
@@ControlTouchMaster Cool, the small rig works best for vloggers or larger tripods but then there are some out there like yourself that find your own fixes. Kudos to you and where possible I'd do the same. All the best Joe
I just went to the Z50 a couple of weeks ago. I was using the D7200, but I wanted to go mirrorless, because of the focus accuracy you get with a mirrorless camera. I am not disappointed. I got it with the FTZ adapter so I can use my Sigma 17-50 F2.8, and its a great combination. The kit lenses are just too slow for a lot of stuff I like to shoot.
@@Gemini_Connect I tried it with a Tamron 17-50/2.8 that worked pretty well with my D5100. While it would still AF indoors, it was to slow to be usefull. Works pretty well with my Nikon lenses though. My go-to fast lens is the Nikon 35mm/1.8DX (size and weight) at the moment while waiting for Nikon to come out with a fast true pancake.
I enjoyed this camera review. This is the first video I've watched on your channel. I have a Z7, but I'm considering the Z50 as a camera I can take with me everywhere. I traded my Fujifilm x100f when I bought my Z7. Right now, I'm torn between buying another x100f or the Z50. I'm going to do a little more research, but this video helped a lot!
Awesome, so glad you enjoyed the video Chris. My partner's gateway into Fujifilm was the Fuji X100s. Great little camera, but the fixed lens is limiting. I'd definitely recommend the Nikon Z50 instead. You can use your Nikon glass on it and enjoy the smaller size. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! 😊🙏
11:10 I think somebody put it to a test among a dozen people, and Nikon's color was preferred by the most (followed by Canon) and Fujifilm was even behind Sony....BTW I am a Fujifilm shooter :)
Z50 is not positioned as a beginner camera. It's in the same class as D7500 and D500. I have it and it's really a nice camera. I like it a lot. No IBIS is not a problem for taking photos. Both lenses are sharp. Ergonomics are great also the menues and image quality and colours.
Nikon brands the Z50 as an "entry level" mirrorless camera (which to me, is synonymous with beginner), mostly because there are only 3 cameras in their whole Z-series mirrorless line. IBIS is not a problem for taking photos -- true, but IBIS can help you take photos at lower shutter speeds.
I would buy this little Nikon Z50 as Im shooting since late 70s. I started with the famous Canon T90 than jumped over to Minolta. When the digital era arrived I shooted with Sony and after that I jumped again to another brand and the Nikon D40 was my first Nikon digital camera ever. I upgraded to D60 and later on to the Nikon D90. I used the D90 quite a long time and than the D7000 series arrived. Than upgraded to his bigger brother D7100. After shooting a while with dslr I jumped - I like jumping - to my first mirrorless camera the M43 Panasonic G7. Than again after a long while, my last jump to the original Panasonic G9. But as a real Nikon enthousiast I will choose for a downgrade. The Nikon Z50 will be a good choice over the fullframe because I can use my Nikon F mount lenses instead of buying expensive Z mount lenses. So even your video is 3 years old it helped my choice to buy the Nikon Z50. By the way....nice video!
Very informative. I am a beginner and all I know is point and shoot. I recently bought a Canon T7 Rebel last year only because of my price range and didn't do my research on cameras. I use my 15 Pro Max more than anything, sometimes it's not the best if I want that max zoom in detail. I am really considering this camera now after watching this video. Seafair is months away but I want to be ready for it. Maybe I should play with the Canon T7 more before getting rid of it, unsure.
I think it is a beginner camera if you're looking at what's being offered brand to brand. However this camera is more capable than a Nikon D3, D3s, D4, D4s in terms of photographic capabilities, I think it also exceeds all cameras up to the D500. ISO 51,200 needs minimal noise correction, the default settings from Lightroom do the trick or auto from Topaz DeNoise Ai. The resolution is excellent for about anything. It has better dynamic range than those older models too. The Z 50 is a miniature Nikon D4 with 1 stop better iso. My issues with the Z 50 and why I returned it. 2 Card slots, battery life (can't shoot and charge), too small, UHS 1 SD card, no illuminated buttons, the af points take too long to go across the screen (too many af points even when set to use half), switching between video and stills is very slow. I really liked and really wanted the Z 50 to be the camera for me but it just wasn't. I'm more of DSLR shooter. I like having a optical viewfinder.
Thanks for the insights, Donovan. I agree with you that the Nikon Z50 is loaded with features for being a beginner-oriented camera -- the main reason why I call it that is because Nikon brands this camera as entry-level, and compared to the rest of the Z-series cameras (all 3 of them, lol!), it is. IMO mirrorless cameras, in general, have features just as advanced if not more so than DSLRs. But there's a reason why I still haven't sold my DSLRs even though I partially bought into mirrorless 😉
Me and my wife just bought ours about a month ago, haven't got to try it out much but so far impressed. Liked your video and opinions. I think we will stick with this for awhile.
Thanks for the clear, logical and well considered video. I’m thinking about getting a mirrorless camera just because there are some good deals at the moment. I started at the Sony ZV-1 and then found some of the mirrorless beginner cameras have interchangeable lenses. So I watched reviews on the ZV-10, the Canon M50 Mark ii, and the Nikon Z50. I’m still not sure what to get. I like the weather sealed nature and the metal construction of the Z50. It’s just that flip down screen which annoys. I’ve also got to get the purchase past the Kamp Kommandant, which is also a contributing factor!
Thanks for the great Nikon Z50 review! I took a break from shooting for a while and my most recent Nikon was the D3s which no longer works and a D700 which still works but no video options, which you know cause you had one. I started my events, virtual walking and tours youtube channel a few years ago and have been using Gopro and Panasonic 4k camcorder for that for that. But now that Nikon is getting in to more 4K video options and with mirrorless I think its time to go back into it especially because I have all these great Nikon F lens all Nikon 28-70 2.8, 80-200 2.8, 80-400 5.6, 10mm fish eye, 60mm macro, 50mm 1.8, 28mm 2.8, lens that I can use with the FTZ Mount Adapter right? I’ve gotten used to smaller and I was looking at the Nikon Z6 or considering the Z5 but I keep going back to looking at the less costly more compact Z50 for using it for video and photos for my youtube channel and for traveling when the situation with covid is better. Do you think I would be making a mistake? My main thing is videos now days. I mainly want to use with with a gimbal for walking videos and videoing events on a tripod in lowlight that my GoPro cant handle and for videoing surfing action which I would use on a tripod.
Dude, I love your channel! I just checked it out and love the walking segments -- it makes me miss home. I grew up in Kapolei 🌞😍 It looks like you already use a gimbal (which one do you use?) for a lot of your shots, so the Nikon Z5 or Z6 would be great. If you can spare the expense, go for a full-frame option. The Z50 is great, but it wouldn't perform as well in low lighting. Get the FTZ adapter, and you'll be good to use any of your Nikon DSLR glass with any of the Z cameras. Hope this helps!
Gemini Connect thanks for checking out our channel and I didnt know you were from Kapolei, awesome! After high school I went to Seattle for about 5 months but came back home after than. i have a couple Kapolei videos somewhere. Here's a drive ruclips.net/video/IJZTYNMo9a0/видео.html. He's a Eat the SHohem. The one I use is not made for the Hero 8 but, made for the Hero 7 so I attach it with think rubber bands. Or I just use a short stick and just make sure my setting is on boostthelinear + leveling mode but, at really low light it does not work and the video is very jerky. The Hero 9 is even bigger than the Hero 8 but, the video quality look better than the 8 especially at 5K. Anyways =)
@@PhotoLukeHawaii My mom started the culinary arts program at Kapolei High -- nice to see it in the video! Do you use the GoPro for your driving videos? The footage looks so crisp and stable. My Hero 9 arrived yesterday. It's a beast of a camera. Super solid feeling, but still gotta test the video quality after this typical Seattle rainstorm passes.
great video, but to keep calling it a beginner camera is a little misleading..I have the D7100 also, and the Z50 does everything the 7100 can do..it's better described as a different camera because it's mirrorless, and it could be described as a mini Z6 to be more accurate, although a beginner would be comfortable with the Z50..I bought it because it's a camera that you can throw in your coat pocket and take it anywhere instead of lugging around a bigger system and I'm sure that there are plenty of people around that also have the same idea..good info though..thanks !
That's a fair point. I call it a beginner camera because Nikon themselves call it an "entry level" camera, and compared to the rest of the Z-series cameras, it is the more beginner-friendly camera. But to your point, the Z50 has so many more features than previous beginner-oriented cameras have had, so a non-beginner could easily get a good experience with this camera too. That was what I hoped to illustrate with the accompanying test footage video. Anyway, thanks for the food for thought!
I sold my d7100 after getting the Z50, it’s so easy and convenient to use and even better quality. The d7100 hasn’t come out of the bag. I figured let me sell it while it still has value.
@@maeu59 Nice! My husband had a D7100 and he really enjoyed that camera. The Z50 was a pleasant surprise, as was the Nikon Z7 -- we just published a new video today about that camera.
Thank you for your video; it was very helpful as I am trying to decide which way to go to upgrade and update my D7000. After comparing the specs, I consider the Z50 a small, mirrorless version of a D500, thus, is not a beginner's camera. I also have a question, hoping you can help me to answer: if you are taking a long exposure picture, how can you shut the viewfinder? Electronically or manually? Thanks again.
Fair enough. Re: beginner camera, Nikon themselves brand this as an "entry-level camera," compared to the rest of the Z-series line (of just 3 cameras, lol). Your comment seems to have cut off -- what was your question about long exposures?
Gemini Connect Thanks. This was my question: if you are taking a long exposure picture, how can you shut the viewfinder to avoid leaking light into the sensor? Electronically or manually? My D7000 has a removable plastic to cover it; the D810 has a lock lever mechanism.
Thank you for the video. The Z50 is fine when taking photos, but not so fine when shooting video. I found the camera super lacking when it comes to video, especially in the low-light area. The auto settings are pretty much useless for low-light situations. I got some okay results with the manual settings. I have been super disappointed with it from the video side. Gonna grab the Sony A7Siii and I bet things will change dramatically.
Gotcha, thanks for the feedback. For me, the Z50 did fine when there was ample lighting, but it definitely would suffer in low lighting due to its small crop sensor body. The Nikon Z6 or Z7 would perform much better in low lighting, or the A7Siii if you go the Sony route (that looks like such a bad ass camera!).
@@Gemini_Connect copy. Thanks for the insight. I didn't realize the sensor size was the main deal? I thought if you have a lower f stop it would solve the issue. Thank you. Shows how little I know. I was wanting the A7Siii but by the time you add, cards and glass you're at $5,000. I was thinking the GH5 would be an upgrade because of the 4:2:2 and 10 bit but maybe not in lowlight since it has a small sensor. Even in well lit areas I'm not crazy about the Z50 for video. I would call it slightly above average? Thank you Gemini! I'm June 9th 😂🤣😝
@@OfficeofthePacific Ahh a fellow Gemini -- hooray! A fast f-stop helps (especially if you can be at f/1.8-2.8), but so does ISO and sensor size. When shooting on a full-frame camera you can push the ISO a lot higher. I'm usually at ISO 3200-6400 when shooting in low light -- shooting at those ISOs on a crop sensor or micro four-thirds camera like the GH5 won't result in the best picture quality, but it will be loads better on a full-frame camera like the A7SIII.
First digital camera was a one Mega Pixel HP C200. Then got DSLR Nikon D40, then some years later D5200 all the while collecting NIkkor DX and AF, AF-S Lenses. So recently with the new mirrorless format out the Z50 Kit with the FTZ adaptor was the perfect choice for me. Really enjoying it so far. I’m not ruling out a Z6 in the future when I have even more time to enjoy after retirement 😁👍
Nice, I hope you like the Z50! We tried out the Nikon Z7 recently and really enjoyed that one too. Hopefully Nikon keeps up the Z series line -- all of the cameras are really impressive so far!
Hi, great review. You forgot to mention though that the Z50 can use any of the full range of Z mount lenses not just the two DX lenses specified. You can use all the other lenses although they do have there crop conversions but are 100% compatible - very useful if you own the Z5 / Z6 / Z7!!
Nikon should make a FTZ adapter that accepts filters like the one Canon makes for the R series. That way beginners can save money on filters. To change subject, since I have started working w the Luminar 4 program and it's Sky Replacement feature, I have become conscious of how many pictures I and my friends take have white skies. So setting up a burst mode with exposure compensation, if your camera doesn't have a good HDR feature, can be a good thing. I enjoyed your video. It was clear and covered a lot in a concise manner. BTW, the Z50 looks good at high iso. I checked it out on Dpreview's test chart.
Esta Z50 ya es un clásico, al igual que la full frame Z5. Hay que poner al día la información y agregar que ambas cámaras tienen -por actualización de firmware- enfoque veloz al ojo también en video.
I'd say it comes down to budget and what you're willing to spend. If you can afford the Nikon Z6, go for it. It's a full-frame camera, so it will perform better in low light photos and videos compared to the Z50.
Thank you for your review! I've been using a Panasonic FZ1000 since 2015. I just got this, was stoked for better quality, but now I'm bummed the screen doesn't flip to the side for vlogging or selfies. If I would have realized this I wouldn't have gotten the Nikon Z50. It's not practical for social media or content creating. Someone like me wants ease of use.
I prefer Sony mainly because I've been using Sony cameras for years, I know how they work, and I have a lot of Sony lenses. On that note, Sony offers more lens options (both Sony and third party).
I think it is positioned like a D5xxx with all the features of a d7xxx with even better button positioning. They will release a Z30 that is more catered towards beginners. My beginner camera was a D7000 so I guess beginner is just really where you want to start as a beginner.
I think it is very comparable to the XS10. I would learn towards getting the Fuji too, mainly for the color profiles and because it would use Fuji lenses, which are more plentiful than the Nikon Z mount lens offerings.
Hmmmm that is a really tough call. Yes, I think I would take the Nikon Z50 over the Sony, just because the image stabilization is pretty great and the colors are better straight out of camera. But Sony does have more lenses and cameras to choose from, so if you end up needing more gear, Sony might be better down the road.
I recently got a Z50 and I'd say this is absolutely not a 'beginner' camera. The specs and features blows all Nikon APS-C DSLRs out of the water in most categories. It's more of a baby Z5/Z6 that can do 11 fps. It's the perfect upgrade for any DX shooter with good F glass who does not want to spend a ton of money on new glass. It's a brilliant little camera.
@@CinHalCedHerChance Yeah that hurts. The Viltrox version might be a better option then. But still I don't get why Nikon is 'trash' . Are they trash for coming out with a new mount? Canon is the same then. Older EF lenses can be used on the new RF mount with an adapter too? How much is that one in Canada? Here it's ~$130.
@@christianholmstedt8770 then canon is equally trash for doing that 😂 It's why I stopped shooting and was considering changing to a Sony a6400. Maybe I can find a used one. Although I'm not sure if that's a good idea because of contact points and how to tell if it's damaged or worn (out).
This will be my first camera beyond iPhone and point and shoot. Im interested in land scape and wildlife. Planning a trip to Alaska to see the brown bear in a year and a half so I have time to learn. I think I’ve narrowed it down to this one Nikon z 50 and the canon m 50 mark ii. Im looking at mirrorless due to lighter weight. I have arthritis in hands. Im leaning z50 because it’s weather sealed but I’m seeing so much about how easy the m50 is to use and learn. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, great video
Really enjoyed your review. I used to shoot Nikon for many years, then switched to Fuji. But Nikon has Fuji beat on ergonomics. From other reviews I've seen, autofocus is smoother on the Nikon than on the Fuji when shooting video. I'm not a beginner, but the Z50 is really tempting. I hope Nikon comes out with more Z mount DX lenses. Some fast primes would be awesome. And would be nice if their card slot accepted UHSII.
Thanks for watching, Geoff! I'm heavily invested in Fujifilm and unfortunately can't add Nikon to my camera gear "collection," but I agree that the camera ergonomics, autofocus, and their image quality are better than Fuji. Nikon is due to announce 2 new cameras and possibly more lenses next week -- excited to see where they are headed!
Gemini Connect I’m heavily invested into Fuji, too. Two bodies and a bunch of lenses. So it would be a hassle and expensive to switch. Oh well, I can dream. Keep up the great videos!
@@hepgeoff Thanks! BTW our latest video is a whimsical take on our ideal scenario -- Fujifilm merging with Nikon. Not realistic, but it would be the best of both worlds from a customer perspective -- ruclips.net/video/bhRfMk4V28E/видео.html
That is a good question, and honestly I cannot remember if it does since I don't have the camera anymore. It definitely does not have IBIS, but it can be used with a lens that has vibration reduction (VR) to provide a degree of stabilization.
@@NITINCHAWLA Tough choice...they are both very good cameras. The biggest difference I can think of is camera size -- the Canon 90D is a lot bigger and heavier, and so are the lenses. The Sony a6600 is smaller and more compact.
Hi and thanks for this video. Would an external powerbank charge the camera fast enough for me to set the camera out for a long(360+) series of night sky interval captures? As I consider the Z50 I was also looking at a dummy battery to power it long term but, if a powerbank that I already possess would work just as well, I don't want to spend the additional money. Thanks.
I love my new z50. It is not as good as all you guys are saying about the noise. For portraits I wouldn’t go over 500 ISO or the noise is very apparent compared to my z6. Well I found out the hard way with my Z50. That if I use my FTZ adapter with any of my f mount lenses. My Apple iPad Pro does not except any of the raw camera files. It does except the raw files from my 50mm & 85mm f1.8S lenses but no lenses used with the ftz adapter . That really sucks
The Z6 has a full-frame sensor, versus the Z50's APS-C/crop sensor, so it makes sense that the Z6 will have overall less noise in the images. Can't say that I've edited RAW images on the iPad Pro, but sorry to hear that the FTZ adapter seems to make a difference.
@@Gemini_Connect yeah I know the difference between APS-C and full frame. But so many reviewers we're saying that they don't see no noise until 10000 +. I'm seeing noise at 500. Also the iPad Pro it is a beast of a tablet. That tablet processes 90 megabyte files better than my two laptops before I got a full editing station. I don't know how it does it but Apple put some power in those little iPad Pros. I saw a couple RUclips reviewers recommend iPad Pro for photo editing so I tried it out and small editing with Photoshop and Lightroom using the apple pencil is a breeze and quick
Some questions I havent found answers for: 1. Can it use external DC power or charge it while filming on DC power (USB power blocks) 2. Does it overheat? 3. Does it have 30 minute recording limit?
1. Can't confirm if you can use while charging, but many say that it charges rather slowly when plugged in. 2. I didn't experience any overheating while shooting in less than 5 minute chunks at 4K30fps. But pretty much every camera I own including GoPro/smartphones/Sony & Fujifilm mirrorless ALL overheat at some point, so I would be surprised if the Z50 doesn't do it too. 3. There is a recording limit of 29 min 59 seconds.
Hello! Good day! Hope you are well. I just recently bought the Nikon Z50 and so far, I am happy with its overall performance apart from the auto focus problem. I usually use the z50 to vlog and when I do, I keep the screen flipped down so I can see myself. I usually put out makeup content so I always need to show different products. Unfortunately, the camera does not recognize / does not auto focus on the product and continues to focus on my face even if the product is already closer to the camera. I always have to click on the shutter button or the auto focus on the touch screen so it focuses on the product am trying to show and honestly it can really get annoying if I have to do that all the time. I am not sure if I had my camera setting incorrectly, but I have tried different modes to no avail. IT KEEPS ON FOCUSING ON MY FACE AND IT NEVER AUTO FOCUSES ON THE PRODUCT. WHY IS THAT SO HUHUHU. I have tried to hold the product for more than 5 seconds and see if it would focus on the product but nah. Camera won't budge. Nope, not auto focusing on the product at all. I am hoping that you guys can give me advice on how to solve this problem? Thanks a ton and awaiting your reply. Have a great day!
Hi Gemini, I’m looking for a camera for beginner starting out photography as a hobby and I’ll be taking the camera on the go and taking videos aswell what would you recommend?
The Fuiifilm XS10 and Sony a6000 are great photo cameras. The Fuji is in preorder (not out yet) and the Sony is older, but still among the best compact photography cameras. There are also newer versions of the a6000, but they are higher in price.
What a great review Its inspiring me to save up for one. I have a Nikon D5500 and that has a flippy out swivel screen so Nikon can do it. If it had a flip out screen it would be the prefect camera.
It's so frustrating when camera manufacturers CAN incorporate features like a proper flip screen, but they choose not to. Hopefully they fix it in a future version. This downward-flipping screen doesn't make any sense!
@@Gemini_Connect there is a go around on this flip screen by adding a cage camera with a quarter inch on the battery side which we can attach a tripod or gorilla pod....
As someone who owned 4 Nikon DSLR cameras and a collection of lenses, the z50 seems to match in features several of the later DSLRs. It sounds strange to hear the word "beginner" used so many times in reference to this camera, and even stranger to hear it is good for those who want to advance from their "phones". For me it is my beginner mirrorless camera; my limitations not being my experience but my budget.
Lol! To be fair, there are other more subtle special effects like Vivid Color and Toy Camera. This was the craziest looking effect (which also looks a lot better on non-human subjects).
If you have an opinion on straight out of camera colors, what profile did you use (LR, CR, PS, etc.)? I'd say that Nikon gives the most neutral and is stronger in the purples and violets, even. I do feel that their lenses can have subtly different color character or tint and this leads to my rant with Adobe: I do not only want camera specific profiles, but lens and light specific. That is, "straight out of camera" is meaningless if you shoot raw and when you shoot JPEG try different profiles on offer. by the way, did you calibrate you monitor and did your calibration include the light in the room around the monitor?
I don't mess around with camera profiles on any models except for Fujifilm. In this case, I just used the default picture profile on Nikon, because I agree with you that colors look pretty great straight out of camera. No monitor calibration was done either.
The FTZ is a super addition and I use all my lenses on my Z50.
I'm not a beginner and I absolutely love the Z50 and its capabilities.
Awesome, glad to hear that you enjoy the camera! I think it's fantastic, regardless of photography skill level.
Ron Spi I agree ☝️
Good point. I also hate when it's hard to make eye contact with the camera with those side screens.
Thanks for watching! Completely agree that the Z50's size makes it great for travel, but the specs are good enough to be a pro camera too.
@@jfinneynowable WHERE?
Thanks! Interacting with people in the comments is one of the most fun parts of RUclips IMO 😊
I've had my Z50 for a few weeks now and as a seasoned photographer I bought it for a small and compact travel camera and excited to use it more once we can travel again.
Nice! I think you'll enjoy the Z50. It's got a lot of features that even seasoned photographers will enjoy.
Cool!..., Buying Z50, i upgraded myself from D5600 ...weather sealed and EVF are the most items i was looking for and i am satisfied.
I just ordered Z50 and can't wait to receive it.
I’ve been toying with the idea of getting into photography as a hobby and a way to connect to my father... it’s been a rough year for my family.
I think I’m gonna take the leap and get a Z50 ‘cause of this review, hahaa-
That's a fantastic idea -- photography definitely brings people together. I think you will enjoy the Z50 a lot. Good luck and happy holidays to you!
Great review. I have been checking out this camera for a while now - you just convinced me! Thanks.
Awesome!! Hope you enjoy the Z50. It's a great camera.
Well done video and useful info. I was considering the camera until you said it had no earphone jack.
I am a beginner. You did such a great job explaining! Liked and Subbed.
Yay! That's our goal with this channel. We are happy to have you here 😊
I honestly can say you are so innocently perform on video i love that.

Hi Gemini Connect the Z50 is sooo expensive what else would you recommend that’s a all rounder like the z50 for beginners?
The Z50's order winners are:
1: Small and light enough to fit in my fanny pack.
Thanks
Another fantastic video. Was wondering about this camera and you’ve helped me get a first pass view. Thanks!!!
Thank you, David. Check out the Nikon Yellow Program. 30 day trial, or a full refund. It's a truly great way to try out the camera.
I got a Z6 and a Z7, but I keep grabbing the Z50.
📷😎👍
I do agree with you about the flip down screen. If only it flip to the side it would be an awesome vlog camera 🙈
Small Rig makes a bracket for Z50 to allow offset mounting of tripod.
Great video on the Z50! I’m currently selling my D7100,D5300 and a few more Nikon film cameras in order to buy a Z50! My main camera is D500 and I think the Z50 will compliment it !
Nice! I agree that the Z50 will be a great buddy for the D500. Hope you enjoy it! Thanks for watching William.
Small Rig makes a bracket for the Z50 which allows the use of an offset tripod mount leaving the flip screen un blocked.
All the best
Joe
I just went to the Z50 a couple of weeks ago. I was using the D7200, but I wanted to go mirrorless, because of the focus accuracy you get with a mirrorless camera. I am not disappointed. I got it with the FTZ adapter so I can use my Sigma 17-50 F2.8, and its a great combination. The kit lenses are just too slow for a lot of stuff I like to shoot.
Nice move with the FTZ adapter and Sigma lens -- I've heard great things about that 17-50mm. Thanks for watching! 🙏
Well, thanks for great content!
@@Gemini_Connect I tried it with a Tamron 17-50/2.8 that worked pretty well with my D5100. While it would still AF indoors, it was to slow to be usefull. Works pretty well with my Nikon lenses though. My go-to fast lens is the Nikon 35mm/1.8DX (size and weight) at the moment while waiting for Nikon to come out with a fast true pancake.
flippy screen - try an L bracket, mount your Arca style quick release to the side and the ballhead under that coupling so the camera is horizontal
That sounds pretty legit, actually. Thanks for the suggestion.
Same class as “D500?” GTFOH!
Don't forget the adapter and that's not cheap, but seeing how you like to spend money on cameras, it'll be nothing to you. lol
What was the name and brand of the mic? Helpful video, thank you!
Rode Video Micro. Another alternative is the Joby Wavo Mobile.
Thanks what an awesome review. I have a D80, and really want to replace it, I think this is for me
Me and my wife just bought ours about a month ago, haven't got to try it out much but so far impressed. Liked your video and opinions. I think we will stick with this for awhile.
Congrats! It's a great little camera, and I hope it works out well for you 😀
@@Gemini_Connect Thank you!
@@Gemini_Connect Oh, hope you don't mind me asking but are you located in Pacific Northwest/Seattle Area? :D
Yes! We're based in Seattle 😊
The Z50 was a pleasant surprise, as was the Nikon Z7 -- we just published a new video today about that camera.
maeu59 what would you recommend for beginners that’s not as pricey?
@@efhurtado Hmm...I can't say that I have ever experienced light leaking into my sensor while doing a long exposure.
Fantastic review for the average consumer.
Thank you, Sanjoy. Glad you enjoyed it.
@@Gemini_Connect got it. Thank you 🙏 Gemini Sister 👍😂🤣
Great review. Thanks. There is now a very slim OEM mounting bracket that bypasses the drop down flip screen on a tripod issue.
Nice, thanks for the tip!
Hi, great review. You forgot to mention though that the Z50 can use any of the full range of Z mount lenses not just the two DX lenses specified. You can use all the other lenses although they do have there crop conversions but are 100% compatible - very useful if you own the Z5 / Z6 / Z7!!
There were not many Z mount lenses available when this was filmed, but yes, you're right.
Thanks a lot for Wonderful Vedio, Would like to know wether this can used for Wedding Photography
It depends on your photography style. If you pair it with prime lenses and fast zooms, it could be pretty good. But it may struggle in low lighting.
Thank you for a great review. Had to sell my 2.7 kg DSLR camera due to arm problems. The Z50 is a much lighter option. I have ordered it.
It’s an awesome Camera 😍,thank you so much for this nice video 💐
You're welcome! Thanks for watching 🙏😀
Esta Z50 ya es un clásico, al igual que la full frame Z5. Hay que poner al día la información y agregar que ambas cámaras tienen -por actualización de firmware- enfoque veloz al ojo también en video.
Are you planning to get the XH2 when it comes out? I can't wait.
Yes, we'll be buying the XH2 as soon as it comes out.
I’m a beginner looking for a first camera (interested in night and city photography/video) and can’t decide between z6 and z50
The flip screen is so BRUTAL I'm exchanging it for a Canon. Just called them. I wish I saw your video before I purchased :/
You mentioned the A6300. How do you feel the two compare? Preference?
I prefer Sony mainly because I've been using Sony cameras for years, I know how they work, and I have a lot of Sony lenses. On that note, Sony offers more lens options (both Sony and third party).
Z50 camera for beginners? You must be joking! It’s a mini powerhouse.
What camera would you suggest for beginners?
@@Gemini_Connect D3500 or t7 or Oly m10 miii
@@AsifLiaquat Nikon. Olympus is over.
I think it is positioned like a D5xxx with all the features of a d7xxx with even better button positioning. They will release a Z30 that is more catered towards beginners. My beginner camera was a D7000 so I guess beginner is just really where you want to start as a beginner.
Nice review ..I'm going to buy z50.. but I want to know z50 or sony 6400 is better in image professional quality? I'm really confused in between these
They're both very good in terms of image quality. Choose the one that looks best to you -- you can't go wrong with either one.
Excellent review. Thank you.
Hi. Is it weather sealed?
very informative! thank you Gemini.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching 🙏
Helpful review. How would you compare this camera to the fugi xs10? I think I would lean towards the fugi.
I think it is very comparable to the XS10. I would learn towards getting the Fuji too, mainly for the color profiles and because it would use Fuji lenses, which are more plentiful than the Nikon Z mount lens offerings.
I love mine
Will you recommend over Sony A6400?
Hmmmm that is a really tough call. Yes, I think I would take the Nikon Z50 over the Sony, just because the image stabilization is pretty great and the colors are better straight out of camera. But Sony does have more lenses and cameras to choose from, so if you end up needing more gear, Sony might be better down the road.
@@Gemini_Connect I thought you mentioned that the Z50 doesn't have stabilization?
I recently got a Z50 and I'd say this is absolutely not a 'beginner' camera. The specs and features blows all Nikon APS-C DSLRs out of the water in most categories.
It's more of a baby Z5/Z6 that can do 11 fps.
It's the perfect upgrade for any DX shooter with good F glass who does not want to spend a ton of money on new glass. It's a brilliant little camera.
Then you need to buy an expensive adapter, Nikon is such trash for doing things this way.
I get that it's a business, but it's a bit too much greed.
@@CinHalCedHerChance
The FTZ adapter can be had used for $150-$175. It's not really expensive.
If I misunderstood what you meant then please clarify.
@@christianholmstedt8770 in Canada they're $600.00, that's $435U.S. 😂😂
@@CinHalCedHerChance
Yeah that hurts.
@@christianholmstedt8770 then canon is equally trash for doing that 😂
It's why I stopped shooting and was considering changing to a Sony a6400.
Maybe I can find a used one.
Although I'm not sure if that's a good idea because of contact points and how to tell if it's damaged or worn (out).
What is better Canon Rp or nikon z50 photography?
Nice video - and a couple comments/questions.
Appreciate it -- thank you for watching!
I haven't used the m50, but have heard great things about it. I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either one.
Love thr review! Im a beginner! I just wanted to know if ut has digital stabilisation..... Like electronic?
That is a good question, and honestly I cannot remember if it does since I don't have the camera anymore. It definitely does not have IBIS, but it can be used with a lens that has vibration reduction (VR) to provide a degree of stabilization.
Thabk you spo much for replying! Can u tell me if cannon 90d or sony a6600 is a better reply
@@NITINCHAWLA Tough choice...they are both very good cameras. The biggest difference I can think of is camera size -- the Canon 90D is a lot bigger and heavier, and so are the lenses. The Sony a6600 is smaller and more compact.
@@Gemini_Connect thank you soo much! I love cannon colours so 90d 😊 it is..
Thanks.
Great review ! ❤️
Can you give me opinion, what camera i must buy between sony @6400, canon m6 ii, or nikon z50? And the reason? Thanks
That's an odd quirk, but I guess no less odd than processing your images on an iPad pro also. I didn't even know you could 😅
@@Gemini_Connect yeah I know the difference between APS-C and full frame.
I've bought this camera last year, but thinking of changing it to Canon. More options there, I feel.
Hello!
They might have fixed this with the latest firmware update. I watch Camera Conspiracies on RUclips talk about it.
Great video tutorial...Good Job.
Thank you for watching! 🙏
Excellent replacement for my good old D5200. What city is at 11:11?
It's Portland, Oregon!
Which should i buy nikon z50 or sony a6100
Tough choice. Both are great cameras, so you can't go wrong with either one. I'd lean slightly more towards the Nikon.
please see the comparison of high iso for nikon z50 vs nikon d7200, you will be surprised with the result
Interesting, thanks for sharing!
Will it work for boxing photography considering the frame rate?
I don't see why not.
Hi Gemini, I’m looking for a camera for beginner starting out photography as a hobby and I’ll be taking the camera on the go and taking videos aswell what would you recommend?
Not more than 500 but also if it’s higher price I’m still curious to what you would suggest anyway?
Hi, at the same price point of z50 which is the best latest camera for photography??
The Fuiifilm XS10 and Sony a6000 are great photo cameras. The Fuji is in preorder (not out yet) and the Sony is older, but still among the best compact photography cameras. There are also newer versions of the a6000, but they are higher in price.
Nikon 16 80mm f2.8 4 Vr is nice work on my z50 or z 16 50mm
Which one would you prefer, sony a6400 or nikon z50?
Sony, mainly because there are more Sony lenses to choose from.
What if I'm not gonna change lenses frequently, still should I go for sony?
@@artdesigneverythinglife I would.
Hi- is there a way to stop the camera from mirroring all your images and videos?
Not sure what you mean by mirroring.
I'm on back order for one.
Hope you enjoy it! 😊
I bought this camera yesterday in Germany Heidelberg and I paid 1300 € wit 2 objectives
If the Z 50 is the only camera that you had, would you use it to do paid work, is it good enough?
If I had to, I could possibly make it work. But I shoot in a lot of low light places, so I prefer a full frame camera for that type of work.
I just bought this camera and the same external mic....the sound however doesn’t seem right...how can one make sure the settings are correct?
awesome 👏🏻
Thanks Adolfo! 🙏
Would like know the picture Quality if Printout of the images are taken in this Camera
Absolutely. Image resolution is pretty high.
@@Gemini_Connect Thanks a lot for the Guidence and Support
lol I wouldn't use that special effect again -it was just a little too weird-other than than that -great content :-)
I agree with the 5 reasons,,
