How is it after all this time? I am stuck deciding anything because of my budget I have been informed that Sony lenses are too expensive and I don't want that just want on the cheap side with quality my budget is 800$
Great camera. Never liked the DSLRs....too big....we Asians have relatively small hands(at least, I do), and this little camera is perfect for a hobbyist like me. Great grip... amazing raws, surprisingly great video and I love Nikon colours.
Everything is relevant; could I shoot a wedding or fashion shoot with this, YES I could. Would I? NO I wouldn't; well not with the kit lens anyway. I like shallow depth of field for the look it gives and also the amount of light it lets in, which in a church would be a must. For fashion it's a bit less of an issue. I have done some fashion stuff with different lenses and it works great. But if you are just starting out then it's a great little camera which can be upgraded with lenses as time goes on.
I bought the Z50 + FTZ adapter + Tamron 18-400 zoom with VR - about $1,400 all in. Now I have a super zoom one lens to do it all set-up, and use this kit for my travel and exploration needs while biking. I can get up to 640mm with the crop sensor and the lens has vibration reduction too. The kit lenses are compact and fine, but not as good as the Tamron and the 17-55 Nikon zoom.
I love that Nikon now have cheap third party autofocus lenses. Like the ultra cheap TTartisan 32mm f2.8 Z, the Yongnuo 85mm 1.8, the Yongnuo 50mm and 35mm, the Viltrox ones, etc
I like the looks of the Z-50 more than the A-6600, but the A-6600 has much more lenses to choose from; even third-party brands(Sigma,Tamron,Samyang,Meike,Viltrox etc).. And..the autofocus on Sony cameras are the best..that's what they told me at least.. Only the Sony menu's are so complex/cumbersome.. Ohh..i will use a camera just for stills, don't do vlogging/ filming.
Yeah Sony do have a great system and support now (never use to when I chose Nikon). Can't believe a company that can develop so much tech can't create user focused menus 🤦
I have the a6400 and let me tell you, on paper that camera is amazing, and yes it is true about the great af and all. But the things that frustrate me are user interface and the color. I use it to do portrait and it is so hard to get the pleasant skin and overall color. I had to turn back to the nikon d5300 just for the color
Terry thank you for a great overview... One thing that no youtube review or tutorial has mentioned except yours is the notch for a cable for (if & hopefully when) a dummy battery arrives there is a way to keep battery door closed while still powering the camera. Hope to have mine in the near future. Again, thank you very much!!
I just used it today. And realized that when you flip your screen it is connected through a thin layer to camera body dont you think thats really can be easily cut ?!
Now I did have to get one of them fixed last month by Nikon (which they did brilliantly - blog on my website) but I think they will last okay. I’ve had the same fitting on my D850 and that’s never had a problem for years. 🤞🏻 I do tend to treat my cameras with a bit more care than my phone though 😳😁
How long can it shoot on a single charge and have you tried timelapse? If so how long can it last with timelapse photography? Too bad it doesn't support charging while recording. This makes me lean towards the Z5. I'm not considering Canon & Sony coz I love the ergonomics of Nikon, the build quality and the menu system, which I find to be good.
The longest timelapse I've tried was a couple of hours and not tried longer although it did still have charge after a couple of hours. Not being able to charge whilst using is a real pain and I was hoping that an external battery power pack would have come out by now as there is a slot in the battery door for that - hopefully someone will develop it soon - I've seen people DIY a version.
Generally yes but there are a few exceptions. This article has a breakdown for you which I've found useful photographylife.com/nikon-ftz-adapter-lens-compatibility Hope that helps 👍
Terry are you liking the z50? I'm very close I have a g95 now and was thinking sony however I have been thinking Nikon. Are you filming with anything other then the kit lens?
In terms of filming, I'm only using the kit lens because of the fantastic speed in which it focuses with it - it's amazing. For photos I sometimes use a 60mm macro lens - because I want that style. I just keep loving this camera!
Confused between D7500 and Z50 mainly for stills use, rarely video. I don't mind the extra weight of the DSLR but I'm enticed by flip down screen for the Z50. Me and my wife are usually alone while travelling and that will help. On the other hand, I own 4 other F-mount lenses and if I go for the DSLR, I don't have to bother with any adapter. Can you help?
Both are comparable in terms of picture quality but you sort of answered the question by saying the screen would be useful when you're on your own - the face tracking on the Z50 is excellent so if you wanted to do stills with you in it, then it will be great - also lighter for travel but it is mirrorless so depends if that would suit for your stills. I still use a DSLR for my landscapes and wouldn't change that yet (although when the D8 comes out, I might). For street and general photography mirrorless is great.
HI Terry I an amateur semi entuisiast. And I wonder why people say they don't use on body flash What if you are at a casual event like at a restaurant or party and you just want some quick photos Do you just use natural light or wind the ISO up? I note that the new Zfc does not have a built in flash
Okay so as a professional I would never use on camera flash for work. This is because the light is directly in front of my subject and they will look flat and lifeless. But for family snaps or personal record photos then having the extra light is great and you should go for it if you have nothing else. Hope that helps 👍🏻
Apart from already having the lenses available and being used to the Nikon menu system, does the camera perform significantly better than the Sony in terms of autofocus and 4k filming quality?
I can't comment on those as I don't have the Sony for direct comparison but from other RUclips videos the autofocus is probably better on the Sony but I have to admit, I am over the moon with the way it works on the Z50. Don't know about quality on 4k comparison but I will happily use it on commercial work and it holds up against our other 4k footage.
The main reason is that I already had Nikon lens and it would have cost me several thousand to get the Sony equivalent even though I would have only had one extra it’s nice to have the choice. Also the Sony menu system was mind boggling 🤪. If you haven’t got any previous kit then I would say let it come down to how the camera feels in your hand and how easy the usability is. Might not be easy at the moment to pop to a shop and try both though.
Great video! I need some help! I use a z50 and I noticed the brightness in the EVF and screen only reflect the brightness/exposure of the actual photo under Manual mode not A or S modes.(I have d8 set to apply to live view) The brightness in the EVF and screen doesn't change when I change the shutter speed or aperture but it does change when I adjust the exposure. The photos can come out really dark when they look bright in the EVF and Screen. Am I doing anything wrong?
Thank you 😊. In M mode you are controlling everything. In A or S mode you are letting the camera control the other settings so that the picture always comes out at what it thinks is correct exposure. This should result in the same picture you are seeing on the screen or EVF providing the setting d7 is set to ‘On’. I have just tested it and all works fine here with the screen showing the same image as being taken. I’m assuming you are not using flash as that is not a constant variable that the camera will get right every time. If you haven’t made any mods to the settings you could just reset the settings back to default and try again incase there is another setting which I’m not aware of or someone else on here might know the answer. Hope that helps :)
@@TerryLivesey thanks for your response! I noticed this the first time I was using the camera. I was testing at very low light and high shutter speed. Everything looked bright in the viewfinder and screen but the image came out very dark as expected.
The screen should always look perfect in A and S mode because that is what those modes are supposed to do - they are supposed to keep it at perfect exposure. So ‘no’ you shouldn’t see a change unless you alter the EV setting (button top right next to ISO), this tells the camera that your preferred perfect exposure is either above or below what it thinks and you can change this up to 5 stops (I think) and this will show the change on the screen or you have gone above the maximum setting for ISO or speed/aperture (because there is not enough light in the room) and then it will show you what you will get.
@@TerryLivesey I did leave ISO at one level and I thought I should see the image dim down as I increase the shutter speed at S mode which is how my Canon m6 markii works. But sounds like that's not the case with z50. I tested at low light with high shutter speed but everything still looked bright in the EVF and screen. The actual image came out dark as expected.
