2023 Isuzu D-Max Review: UNFORTUNATELY... It's Falling Behind Other Utes.

  • When the Isuzu D-Max first came out, I was stoked. But since then, the all-new Ford Ranger, Volkswagen Amarok and Mitsubishi Triton have come onto the scene.
    So today, we take a look at the facelifted Isuzu D-Max, which apart from some nice new additions has started falling behind its stiff competition. Is the D-Max a bad ute? Not at all! But there are certainly some areas for improvement which we will cover in today's review.

    Some of us will happily have a little less 'tech' and 'refinement' for long life and reliability. That is where the Isuzu 3 litre engine really excels., kilometre after kilometre. There is no way a current Ranger or Amarok will still be running reliably with the engine untouched after high mileage, which is probably not an issue if you buy new and trade them within 3 years but for longevity the Isuzu is king.

      Yeah it's a common story in Nomad , outback explorer & pastoral / emergency services land. No way you'll do any serious exploring in a Ranger or amarok unless your with a "tour" guide or lots of mates. Dmax & Hilux are the only " middle weight " vehicles with near bullet proof reliability. Their excellent resale values tell you a lot about reputation. Journalist reviews in near empty utes over a few days means nothing. Years ago , the Land Rover Discovery won 4wd of the year award for 3 years & it's been the most unreliable car on & off the road ever since until the Jeep grand Cherokee equalled it . Always check automotive reliability & loyalty sites in Oz , US & other's & the story stays the same. Dmax is pretty sound.

    In Europe we are lumbered with the 1.9 litre diesel which is a bit weedy and, like other previous Isuzu engines, has had issues with the DPF and fuel contamination of the engine oil. No mechanical reliability issues though but lots of users are not particularly happy with it. There is a UK importer approved remap available for the engine that is officially approved, but one should ask just why it isn’t in that state of tune from the factory. It does need a very comprehensive update now, as you say, because it has fallen well behind the best in class Ford/VW and Toyota utes even though the HiLux itself is also in need of an update even though it has just been updated. Hint to manufacturers… stop with the black interiors on utes and avoid piano black like the plague. Black shows up the dust and dirt that is inevitable inside these utility trucks terribly. Piano black scratches and shows dirt particularly badly. I know that this may come as a shock to vehicle manufacturers but they really should check it out for themselves.

      @@Sheepleton The Ranger is certainly best in the pickup class. Ford’s spares and back-up is extremely poor. Two different things. I have Ranger that is three months short of ten years old in daily use and have no complaints about it. Very seldom, probably only three times gone further than 50 miles from home and most days no further than ten miles. Fetches cows in season and tows 3.5 tons about twice a week on average and when it’s dry enough is off-road most days. Biggest issue is that it is on its fourth replacement rear leaf spring. All but the original and the last one fitted being various spurious copy brands.

    Where do you guys get your info from? The D-Max hasn't had a DPF for years! It has a DPD which is market leading. No expensive filter to change, Highway drive not required to do the emissions burn. This should have been part of the review if you are matching it to other models that have AdBlue or DPF! It's a significant factor in lower running costs, guaranteed for life of engine and does not require regular maintenance. (So "The DPF has issues" is Totally wrong as it doesn't have one! It has a market leading DPD) - Please better reseach, not your only mistake but the biggest misleading comment.

    Having bought a 2023 X Terrain brand new it has been nothing but a disappointment. They look good the interior is nice but it is poorly put together. It has been nothing but a bucket of rattles . The dash has rattled since the day I drove it off the showroom floor with multiple attempts to fix it from the dealership . The electronics just take all the joy out of driving, with the collision avoidance slamming the brakes on regularly around town and you have to turn it off every time you start the car and you have to scroll through the menu to find it every time. The lane assist can be turned off with a button on the steering wheel but it also must be done every time you start the car. I have done 45,000 kilometres and can’t wait to part company with this vehicle.

    Can't make 4x4 for all types of Bananas

  • @AussiePom
    @AussiePom 4 месяца назад

    The IDAS system is not an intelligent system for it's speed minder function bongs for 40kph zones at 3am. I wouldn't want to take this vehicle or any other late model 4x4 into really rough terrain for any problem and the car's computer will refuse to allow you to drive the car stranding you in the middle of nowhere. The older 4x4's were so much better for anything that happened you could put right yourself there and then you could keep going. The majority of all this "tech" is not necessary and just makes what could be a reliable in all conditions 4x4 into a temperamental and unreliable 4x4. It doesn't matter how good the engine is because the fragile 'tech" will fail long before the engine will and the "tech" controls the engine.

    Ah guys …. when you go around a corner on a wet road you need to drive slower not faster - drive to the conditions as you don’t want to take another vehicle out or your own - and A$65k (this is not budget as you claimed - I would suggest below A$20k is) for a piece of shaped metal with wheels to get you from one place to another is insane as I’d rather put that towards property - my A$18k Toyota 4WD easily gets me around my 5 acres thank you with no outrageous rip off debts.

    Lads, it’s know for heaps of issues. Cooling problems, egr, heads, engine mounts coming away from chassis, fuel system problems and Isuzu has a Ford like reputation for customer service. If you don’t tow more than the car weighs and get it serviced more the usual it should be good. That engine is not used in any commercial truck made by Isuzu. Why? Emissions. Commercial trucks still don’t have that worry in most countries. Other than that it’s not any better or worse than any other Ute. If you like it buy it. Personally, I drove one recently, it’s so much worse than my 2015 Ranger I wouldn’t even bother. Small, uncomfortable, gutless and handled like a bag of cement. Hoping Kia gets their Ute on the market soon and we can all move on!

    Very poor build quality. Interior leather & finish has a very cheap feel compared to my previous vehicles. Infotainment unit (radio) is unusable in a capital city. Cannot tune into stations and Isuzu Tech say “ it is what it is”. Very poor quality and customer service. Mechanically ok but way behind its competitors and definitely NOT VALUE FOR MONEY.

      Biggest shit bucket ever. The missus got one as a company car. It spent the first 4months in the dealership for a warranty claim, failed driver airbag module. It is now almost a year old and going in for the third warranty claim due to failing electronics. They are rubbish and I doubt that it will make 100k km's. Flimsy piece of crap.

    The D-Max interior (like others) is fake leather, “pleather”, not real, not organic and of inferior quality/feel to real leather.
    I feel as an automotive journalist you should call out this industry BS!!! Vinyl hasn’t been trendy since the 90’s and it still isn’t…
    so calling it “leather” now seems very sheepish, even if the manufacturer does.
