I've always liked the Ambassador class design - it has the Excelsior saucer style, the Constitution deflector & the Galaxy nacelles.

I love TNG but I like this design much more than the Galaxy Class.

The bussard cowls were added due to the constant bright red glow through the windows of crews quarters that face right at them.( look at the ship model, there are windows that are obscured by the bussards , new crew personnel rooms only.)

The Ambassador is a consummate example of a federation starship. Excellent multirole cruiser. Only a little less capable in battle than the Galaxy. It is not quite the classic that the Excelsior is but still a good example that will be around for a long time. It was a ship that actually introduced several important new technologies such as the Type 9 Phaser Array instead of Phaser Turrets. I have read somewhere *but I don't think its canon* that starfleet at one point assisted the Bajoran Militia in building several Ambassador Class starships for Bajor. At first, the bajorans were upset that they were given such an old design until they realized it was still quite a good ship.

The Ambassador was noteworthy for being the first Starfleet vessel to be equipped with phaser arrays over phaser banks, the first class of starship to be designed with ability to eject its warp core in an emergency were as all previous starships featured solely antimatter pod ejection and or emergency core venting to mitigate the risk of a warp core breach. Lastly, the Ambassador class Heavy Cruiser was the first starship class equipped with the first generation of isolinear processor chips.

The best ship in my mind. It had the best key features of looks that combines all the previous models.
Also designated as a “Heaven Cruiser” she was no slouch in a fight.

Personally I have always loved this ship. While not remaining in service as long as the Excelsior class, it is a much nicer ship (to my eyes) to look at and put starfleet in a good position for the future.
I also hate how it's always commented on as an intermediate ship. It's a ship in its own right and would have served very well.

The half and half ship . secondary hull looks like constitution refit design. Engine pylons from Excelsior Class. Engines sort of Galaxy class influence.
Saucer round like usual starships.Neck influenced by constitution refit. Hell, the engineers just copied other designs and mixed and matched, thus the Ambassador class was born !!!.
