    been shooting my new A7R5 for 2 days now. pre-ordered as a backup to my A1. my A7R4 was the A1 backup and now it is on practice squad. results as expected. more keepers (mainly wildlife). I rate it as very close to the A1 for what I shoot, with the added ability to crop a bit more. the biggest features over the A7R4 are WAAAAAY better focusing, the much higher resolution EVF and flip screen.

    Great review. One thing that I think is worth mentioning is the A7RIV in-camera charger is now a PD charger, which means dramatically faster charge times if using the appropriate USB charging device. Not a reason to update on its own, but a welcome improvement. All the best.

    • @Battlem0nk
      @Battlem0nk 2 года назад +1

      Hmm. A7RV has new better AI AF so it is more intelligent identifying eye/subject. Great for most usage cases. However, sensor read out is slower so there are fewer AF calculations. A1 has stacked sensor and does 120 calculations per second. It would be superior for AF tracking fast moving targets like sports or wildlife BIF

    I think the ability to shoot 26 MP compressed RAW files is actually huge. For non-pros, the smaller files are far easier to handle. I think it is also cool that the camera will output 26 MP in both FF and APS-C mode. Especially, if you aren't going to use CFexpress cards, I think the ability to shoot 26 MP files is huge.

      I would be interested to know a little more. I am just a beginner hobbyist. The sensor is 61mp, why shoot 26mp? Is that what this setting means? Is this setting a crop?

    • @mlai2546
      @mlai2546 2 года назад +1

      @Trojan Hman yes I believe Vivek is trying to save on space. So by shooting 26mp, the file will be much smaller vs 61mp. So my question is why doesn't he just get a Sony A7iv, which has a 33mp sensor. And your question about 26mp being cropped, I don't think it is. I am not not a camera programmer, but I think the camera uses full sensor and pixel binning process to reduce the 61mp into 26mp. Like how a Google Phone has a 50mp sensor but your image is actually 12mp.

    • @trojanhman8136

    • @mlai2546
      @mlai2546 2 года назад +3

      @@trojanhman8136 yeah, there is no reason to buy a 61mp camera and shoot 26mp. Which part is confusing? Pixel binning? Here's what I found from Google search:
      For example, if you’re using a phone with a 48-megapixel sensor and pixel binning divides the pixel count by four, you may be left with a shot made up of only 12 megapixels.
      Despite this, the resulting shots will likely be better quality than those taken with a standard 12MP camera phone with a smaller sensor. And since pixel binning is ideal to use in low light conditions, it may result in a better picture than the 48MP sensor would be capable of on its own, in certain environments.

    Thanks for the great video and very thorough comparison. If this video is not the last word on the technical comparisons of these two models, I don't know what is.
    I do find one bit that might be worth a correction, though. Somewhere around the 6:30 mark, you make a point that you don't need a special mode to track a train and that normal autofocus would find a spot to track on the train anyway. But there might be a subtlety there that you're missing. Judging by what I'm seeing in Sony's promotional videos describing this feature, when in train mode, the camera appears to make an effort to focus only on the front of the first car of the train rather than on just any random spot on it. Similarly, you may notice that, in the car mode, the focus area rectangle is limited to the front grill and headlights area of the car, rather than just any spot on the overall body. The understanding seems to be that, just like the way the eye is the preferred point of focus on human or animal faces for most people, these are the specific parts of these vehicles that are the preferred focus targets. And being able to do this clearly takes some specialized detection logic beyond any generic focus tracking that locks onto just any point on the vehicle.
    Having said that, I'm not sure if there's any such specialized aim of the airplane mode. At least it didn't seem to be very obvious from the videos that Sony shared. Perhaps that is more geared toward detecting the shape of a (potentially tiny) plane in a wide sky, with the understanding that, when you're photographing a plane, you'll rarely be close enough to it to have to pick between different focusing target on its body.

    Thanks for the detailed comparaison. The R series makes for an excellent studio camera. It would have been nice to include this use case in your review (usbc now 10 gbps vs 5; usbc now supports PD power delivery-hoping this will make the R5 camera more responsive with faster tethering; and faster wireless system for those that use wireless; new focus stacking feature…). For the rear LCD, the new articulation looks great but I think you got the dot count wrong; it’s dumbed down on the new R5 to 2.1 dots from 2.36 on the R4a

If it plays well with the 200-600, I'll probably pull the trigger mid 2023. Coming from the Nikon D810 (which I love for everything but the in-focus keeper rate), I have nowhere to go but up. 10-12fps would be (ideal for me) all that I would want anyway, The way I am with the itchy trigger finger, sometimes the 5fps I have is too much. Does this camera "feel" just as fast and responsive as the A1? I rented an A1 for a week and, when I went back to my A7RIV, that's what I missed the most! My camera felt "laggy" and sluggish compared to the A1.
    And I don’t mean the AF system or the shooting speed or the buffering, necessarily. I mean the general use of the camera. The menus, startup time, time between switching shooting modes, etc....just feels INSTANT on the A1 in a way that it doesn't on the A7RIV. Additionally, there are definitely times when you have to "wait on" the A7RIV, one example that comes to mind is that, after shooting a short burst (only 2-3 shots) of photos, I can't immediately record a video, I have to wait for the buffer to clear. (this is even when using a 300 MB/s write card, since there is a write-speed bottleneck inherent in this camera)
    The overall responsiveness of the A7RV hasn’t been mentioned in any write-ups or videos I’ve found, I’m starting to think there is an NDA Sony made folks sign to not talk about it!

    That 61mp sensor in the IV is too noisy. The cost difference is also too great.
    You can get a lightly used or even a new A7RIII for £1,500. A new A7RIIIa, £1,800.
    Way good enough.

    OK Jared, can you or someone else give me an opinion on something? I am drawn to the A iv camera but moving from a Nikon D850, I want a really good view screen and EVF (like on the A 5). I really dont want massive files. I have no need for them. I do concert photography semi-professionally and I need excellent low light focusing and good low light image quality. The Nikon D850 was terrible at this. If I shoot the the A5 with 61 MP, and then use he "medium raw" setting, will I get good low light results without too much noise? Or should I stick with the A iv and just get used to the few drawbacks it has? I welcome any knowledgeable opinions.

    Great review and comparison video! BTW have you gotten your hands on the latest Sony G Master FE 24-70mm f/2.8 version 2. I was wondering if you can do a comparison video and talk about if it is worth the upgrade from version 1.

    I bought from original A7R and upgraded to every model except A7R V. I have a feeling, looking at recent massive Sony sales, Sony is about to release a bunch of new cameras. I cannot wait to see what Sony will bring out with A7R VI. Maybe 80 to 100 Megapixels?

    As a youth sports photographer I have been shooting with the a7riii for several years and have found it to be decent. My only question for Jared is, does the a7r5 have anti flicker. Thats a big issue for me due to bad gym and field lighting in youth sports. Jared, do you happen to know? Thanks

      The A7R5 does have variable shutter just like the A7IV for shooting in electronic shutter mode. However the sensor not being stacked will probably give you too much of the "jello" effect to be usable.

    Why would you say the A7R V is not good for Bird photos?

    • @JohnDrummondPhoto
      @JohnDrummondPhoto 2 года назад +1

      Too slow a burst rate. 7-10 FPS is really slow for fast-moving subjects like birds. The Alpha 1 and multiple bodies by Canon and Nikon have much faster burst rates.

    I have a 6 mo old Sony A7iv I like the video capability but I also enjoy stills. Im not a professional, do you think selling it and getting the A7RV for the higher MP in the still area or do you think the difference between 34 and 61 wouldn't be that different

    why does compression get a hit? Compression doesn't always mean a decrease in quality. Clever compression algorithms can reproduce nearly same data. Can anyone actually tell a difference between a compressed and uncompressed raw in a blind test? Or is the hate hypothetical?

    • @mikni4069
      @mikni4069 2 года назад

      Canon don’t do uncompressed so it’s not a massive issue, the uncompressed is faster when loading into editing as it doesn’t have to be uncompressed

    I'm moving up from the a7r2. It's looking like the R5 is that much better enough... Don't know if I'd feel the fomo if I'd jumped to R4s in 2020. But for roughly 1k more for the pair it's looking like a no brainer to go R5
