      In one word: yes. The better EVF and screen really improve the shooting experience. The AI allows for stickier and better AF + you forgot to mention face registration, which could be very helpful at, e.g. weddings. The only drawback for current A74 users - the price diff isn't really $1,400 because you'll get south of $2,000 for your used A74 so the "cost" to upgrade is higher than $1,400...

      IMHO, I feel the a7iv is more of a creators camera with a great balance between photo & video. I don't think you're getting much more for the $; spend the $ on a new lens.* BTW, my gut tells me that Sony will upgrade the A1 soon (then sell the a7iv) and get that LOL

    have been using the A7IV almost since it came out , very happy with the camera, just bought the A7RV so I can have a second body as backup for events and landscape , after trying for three weeks, I can say that the IQ I can get with either camera is not something that you could distinguish one from the other for practical use, I am returning the RV and will wait for the A7CII to use for travel and to pair with my small lenses to carry around town and minimize the weight ........that I think will make more sense for my use case ...the major benefit I saw from the RV was the EVF , is really nice and will miss it.....the tilty flippy screen, was OK, but found that I did not use as much a I thought I would've......the other benefit on RV is focus stacking in camera, great for macro .....the AF is an improvement, but, not worth extra 1,500...so, all in all, I think I fully agree with he conclusion on this video

    Fantastic video Benj and also useful for someone using A7iii such as myself trying to decide which to upgrade to.
    One killer feature - if I understand the camera correctly - is that if you shoot in RAW(M), and then go crop mode, it bumps back up to the full resolution, and so you get a 26 MB file either way. This means that if you had a pair of these bodies with a 24 and a 50, you’d essentially have a set of 4 primes on you at all times.

    I am first a hobbyist and second a stills photographer. I went A7rii in '17 having also my '14 A7s. Resolution is more or less in prints and unless you look at a photo with a magnifying glass then you may see a difference . As a tool for images I will never sell my A7rii, why you may ask? A little unknown is the on camera playmemories apps and the main one is the "Digital Filter". When I got the A7s I discovered Milky Way images in '15 and I never went to a dark dark place but just coastal beaches with very dark skies but lit brightly for cities. What the digital app does is it captures a sky and foreground separately with any setting you can think of like WB along with about 10+ other settings. It performs in camera and gives a raw or jpeg output that can be adjusted before sending to the SD card. As far as MW's you can capture over a lit city where everyone will think you PS'ed it. This is a main reason to forever keep a M1 or M2 model Sony. A A7rii is very sharp and great. A friend sold me his A7RIV when he upgraded to the A7RV it was also great but when I saw all the unsaid thing I sold it and got the A7RV. One was the focus stacking still needed PS to merge all. Another I found out after getting was noise of a A7S, A7Siii and the A7RV were the same at 200%. To me the A7RV is like a lazy photographer's camera with the AF stuff, but a one and done camera for whatever you can think about to capture. Video is a generational thing so be happy you get that too. The only to add is the "Digital Filter" app so you do not have to carry a lot of filters and holders around. One thing about this review is the ISO test, Sony cameras from M2 and up have ISO Invariance meaning you can shoot say at 640 and in post increase exposure and get less noise meaning also no flash needed at the party, heh it is a lit room is it not! I have never needed a flash from the beginning '14. And if you ever have used the two level auto mode you would not have to also well there is is a flash mode for night portraits where you can use a flash! There is a 900 page book about all you can do with the A7RV even with video. Study before that first shot, like formating you now can do a complete format just by pressing the trash can before on your cameras was a fast format leading to confliction of some images, so why has not Sony done a update to all cameras? It is the little things that make a great camera and great photographer.

    Very good comparison, and I agree, that image quality should always come first. In that respect, they are very similar. As an architectural photographer, the resolution bump can be useful for me, though most of my clients, don't actually want or need it. The rear screen is a big part of the reason I just ordered an A7RV to replace my A7IV. I often need to back my camera into tight spaces to get more in the frame and this is a big plus. The autofocus upgrades, though impressive, would make more sense in a faster camera, like the A1. It's great for the new A9III.
    On using the cameras together, I think that would be good, but after years of using multiple Sony bodies I find it is rare that the menus of two different models can be set up exactly the same way. This is something that really helps workflow. You didn't touch on the new menus of the A7RV but I think they are likely to be a decent upgrade for most users too. I have the new V2 menus on my A1 and they are great to work with. I suspect the A7RV and A1 will be a closer match than the A7IV and A1, when it comes to menus. Now, if they added the A7RV updates to the A1, that would be a killer camera! I'll sell a kidney for that one.

    Hi , Is the Full frame Xtra fine 26 MP JPEG also benefitting in Low light on A7R5 compared to 61 MP JPEG. Can u suggest on it .
    i am basically a JPEG shooter and confused between buying a74 and a7r5 , i have good budget for a7r5 and will pull the plug for it , if 26 MP JPEG is also benefitting in low light. You can shoot in 61MP in good lighning for extra detail and resolution on A7R5 and switch to 26 MP for low light benefits if light goes down.
    i have seen and read that medium RAW benefit s in low light , but so should 26 MP jpeg too , just wanted to confirm with you on it . Thank you.

    i don't understand this review. the two cameras differ mostly in resolution, i would have thought the only thing people would be interested in is to see a heavily cropped and zoomed comparison, that would show whether you get more detail with the A7RV and how much more, but you didn't do a single such comparison. my only reason for considering to upgrade to a7rv is because i would want to be able to crop in more, sort of like a replacement for getting a longer lens. but this video did not answer that question.
    otherwise a very good video, i am just surprised that the only question i thought most people would have about this comparison, was not answered.

    • @Bcutter
      @Bcutter 5 месяцев назад

      @@benjhaisch yes i watched the entire video (and again thank you btw, still a good and interesting video). what i would have wished around 7:54 is way closer zoom. you quickly say "obviously you can see a huge difference in resolution" but first of all at that point both images are zoomed to different sizes so it's hard to compare exact details, and they both still look crisp and detailed enough, at least at my 27" 4k monitor. I would have wanted a much closer zoom with both images equally zoomed in. and maybe for many different images. just to answer the question "if i take a photo with the A7RV, how much more will i be to crop while still maintaining good enough detail?".
      i know maybe i come off as arrogant talking about what "I" wanted to see, but I would have thought this was the only thing people would want to compare, since all the other things (such as dynamic range) are obviously going to be similar and amazing in both cameras.

    • @Bcutter
      @Bcutter 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@benjhaischah now i understand. took me a second to realize that cropping 100% on each is basically the most amount of zoom you can do without starting to see resolution artifacts, and hence gives a good idea of how much "closer" you can get to the subject. at first i even missed that both were 100% crop and i didn't understand why you would show them both with different subject size. so i am sorry about that. however, i still think it would have been valuable to see even more zoomed, with both subjects equal size; a side-by-side where you can see exactly how much more detail the A7RV has. so in summary, what you show at 7:58 is actually exactly what i was looking for, how much "closer" i can get to the subject, but it in a way does not show how much more detail you get, but maybe that's not actually of interest in that sense.
      i admit when i am at fault, and thanks for clearing it up!

Obviously you will see more grain and a less sharpness. The views were very similar until zooming in. Forgive me if I’m missing something, but it seems to take a lot of value out of the otherwise terrific video you obviously worked very hard on.
