I'm more interested in doing the best job that I can, not using the best tools that are out there. I know from experience I don't need the best tools to do the best job I can do.
A bit over two weeks with the A7RV. The A7RIV was my first Sony camera and I have the A1, which I mostly use for video shoots. I've done a couple of video shoots with the A7RV (under mixed florescent bulb lighting) with it as well as a bird photography shoot (paired with the FE 200-600 + 1.4X teleconverter). Autofocus and white balance are much better than the A7RIV, and actually give the A1 a run for its money. On the bird shoot, the V nailed eye autofocus in almost every shot. The new screen and the main menu need to be rolled into the next A1.
Besides the 60fps 4k video crop my only major setback I'm pretty happy with my A7IV I'm not a big name content creator I super unknown photographer videographer In NYC but you shed light on improvements spec wise 🦉 from the A7IV fixed upgraded modification upgrade implemented in the A7RV #1. the evf viewing #2. the flip out screen #3. The Al face/ 👁️ improvement #4 the IBiS I still have my A6500 as my backup camera I sold my A73 & saved up for the A7IV I have now as my number one camera If I'm moving forward with photography & videography as a full-time business that actually feeds me I would consider the upgrade to the A7RV? To meet the demands of paying clients ! I'm not reach that level Once again great video & I'm a follower of you channel ✌️ & respect for your very honest video about this insane camera upgrade for those who can afford the equipment addition I'm not financially on that level or have a steady client support to warrant the upgrade Keep up the great video post 😊
I believe the a7iv is enough if youre focusing on portraits or some composition that doesnt require great cropping. But when it comes to landscape, wildlife, or product photography the a7r5 is a great camera.

So true. When you like your gear you like it. Just enjoy it. Everything new has a fancy new feature or ability but I think everything from the A7iii up until now, including different manufacturers have all been excellent.
Excellent review and pointing out the key features. Like you channel and just subscribed. I shoot stills, landscapes almost exclusively with occasional video. Two features that are useful (read must have) for me are the articulating screen which allows me to shoot low angle verticals without getting on the ground on my belly and the other is the shutter that closes when the camera is off. The closed shutter reduces dust getting into the camera. I have had my A7RIV for less than a year and already had to have the sensor cleaned once. Two months later, it needs another cleaning. I get it done professionally as I do not want to mess with an expensive sensor! Focus stacking is a distant third feature I can use.
Yea the thing that really pisses me off is their not software updating their older cameras and give bs excuses like the processor can't handle it. I'm like suuuuuure whatever you say. A1's processor can't handle menu changes or compensations riiiiight
Excellent video. I also feel a need to upgrade from R-IV to R-V. For the planned event photographer- weddings etc. it’s a must have. For fashion / glam - maybe For portraits - no For landscapes - of course not.
Both cameras are good. The improvement of image stabilisation of a7rv sold me out. I won't sell my beloved a7iv, I will buy a7r5 in addition for better image quality and image stabilisation. And, note! A7r5 is good enough for pro video.
Good review Terry. I share your dilemma. I have an a7iv (excellent) and I'm sure tempted to get an a7rv, possibly selling my a7iv. I certainly don't need one but at times I feel I want one. I'm Y, N, Y, N, maybe. Your vid was 10 months ago so I wonder if you did eventually change? After 28 years shooting Nikon, 2018 was the year I dabbled with an a6500. I waited to see what the new Nikon Z range was going to offer before my next change. When I saw Nikon's Z6 I was disappointed and bought a Sony a7riii 'on the bounce'. I then bought an a9, a7riv and wanted an a1. Saw the spec of a7iv and bought that. Intending to progress my journey in video I then bought a FX3. Currently I own 2 bodies (a7iv and FX3) and 14 Sony lenses (about half GMs). I miss the speed of my (now sold) a9 for sports stills so still lust after an a1. But, feel lack of firmware updates and the old screen is holding me back. Maybe an updated a1 with full software capability and rear screen from a7rv would be my best choice. But it isn't available or even rumoured as soon to be available - so I'm torn. I don't like the rolling shutter on the a7iv or a7rv (from reviews seen). Neither do I like the stills from my FX3 (too small, low res, no crop potential). So an a7rv, although great for high res and effectively an a7iv on steroids it's not the best video or sports camera. Really I need 2 good cameras that I can shoot both stills and video with. 2 cams for multi cam video - preferably able to handle timecode as FX3 can. But also 2 cams for sports, action, events etc so I can switch rapidly between shooting with a 70-200 and a 24-70 or 16-35. I don't want to rush into a quick decision only to then sell-on if it's not delivering against my expectations. I also like idea of uber compact a7Cr but hate loss of full size HDMI and rear screen of a7rv. Choices choices. Arguably a nice dilemma to have.

i would argue that with the cropping power the a7riv & rv can and are great sports cameras too. the cropping power allows for different lens selections esp with the 26mp crop mode and the extra dynamic range and resolution allows for maximum flexibility in post. Ive shot sporting events with my riv and riii and having cropping power is a STRONG edge against some of the competitors whos 30fps has serious limits and diminishing returns in comparison.
the 8k is gimmicky for alot of people but for me as a streamer it does have some interesting applications. it would be on a tripod with a subject thats not moving too much, so the rolling shutter wouldnt be an issue and i wouldnt be recording to the camera sd cards either so file size issues wouldnt be an issue either. If i compress it down to a 4k/1080p output in OBS itll compress the noise (esp at higher ISO's) allowing for crisper footage with less noise and at lower file sizes (when recording from obs to the PC)
Bro you just made me have an epiphany. My A-cam can now be the Sony FX3. I can sell my Sony a6600 and my few aps-c lens and possibly cop this camera. Especially if I film mostly in s-log 3 and s-cinetone. I just really love cine-ei
Had my A7R5 for a couple of weeks now and I am massively happy with it. Its like the A7R4 modernised...its great as the A7R4 was. It's not perfect. The autofocus is good but yeah when it's employed on the A1ii it will be better. The body isn't quite the same btw....my A7R4 case does NOT fit on the new one unfortunately...
A7c with a gimbal is good enough for most of the jobs. I have it as well. Won’t change until in 4 or 5 years they would bring an a7cII with active stabilization and better ibis and AI recognition and 10 bit 4k60. Then maybe i would sell mine and invest another 1k to get it.
whats your thoughts on achieving a happy middle ground in video with crop mode? dp review showed the rolling shutter in super 35 mode in 4k 24p was pretty darn good with great lowlight performance too
Nooo don’t do it the a1 is still superior. Don’t get taken by the hype it is a great camera but the a1 is still better slightly. You don’t really see much of a change your daily shooting by switching because they’re to similar.
@@EleReyProductions I think in some points the A1 is, but some others not. I was considering both, (ive a A7III), went for A7RV bcs of the flip screen + stabilisation. The A1 main points were the sensor which is better for rolling shutter, but that's all.
What are you talking about? The A1 still hast the much superior sensor Exmor RS . The 7RV only has an Exmor R. Autofocus speed of the A1 is MUCH quicker.
I'm tired of youtubers talking about rolling shutter, nobody who watches a video is thinking about that, only the people who know about it, not 99% of people.

Sony's AF can be amazing, but this mode thing does get silly. What if you have a person in a moving vehicle holding a pet and you want the pet in focus? Too man modes. I have the a7iv and basically I just hope what I see is close to what I expect because the viewfinder is so bad I can't really tell. I bought it mostly for video and there is no way on a sunny day to see the lcd, at least not with any degree of confidence or precision.
The A7Rv is a great camera, it’s an upgrade in every single way, except one and that was a deal breaker for me…The slow readout speed unfortunately results in Canon Eos R like rolling shutter. Providing you don’t need to pan or move in video, this camera is awesome! I wanted one camera to do it all. I hope the A1 gets the A7RV feathered and the new A1 will be epic!

Depends, the A7-IV probably does 90% of what the A7R-V does.. to me it's a messed up camera.. why 8K?!? Who cares, also they could have made better FPS.. just 10-FPS? 10-FPS is 5 years old already.. like duhhh
Yes she’ll out another 2 grand and when you look at your video you will not notice any difference other than a more practical screen and a few more useless bells and whistles.For me picture quality is the most important thing They have reached the limit in picture quality. Rolling Shutter is something Sony should improve. A Hundred different auto focus modes . You don’t know which ONE to choose. These cameras are for camera reviewers , on RUclips . To use these cameras you need an hour to decide which mode to use . A shout out to Sony for this impartial video.
What if I don't want the 61 mp sensor, but still want all the tech and to stay in the realm of Sony? Reccomendations? Shooting with an a6400 currently.
Fabulous review, Terry. I don't think I'll upgrade but totally agree about the screen/EVF thing on the A74. Having come from FF DSLRs with their magnificent screens and OVFs, mirrorless is just pretty yucky (unless you want to spend enough for a good used SUV). Keep the great stuff coming!
Terry you missed the new AWB, Taylor Jackson and Manny Ortiz both said its the first Sony camera that they'd you it on. Also Manny reckons the Auto ISO is improved as well.
Excellent info thank you. I bought this A7RV & the A7CR for my wife. She hates big cameras. I bought the GM2 70-200 & GM2 24-70 and the teeny 24, 40 & 50 for the bodies.
A good policy I live by is if you have the second or third best thing compared to the first best thing, you shouldn't upgrade. Instead you should wait for the a7R6 or a7R7. I use an a7ii, because my budget is small, but Im avoiding jumping to an a7iii, so that I can save for the a7iv, or even a7v if it gets annpunced.
i agree with you, both are very good but the 5 is alot better just the price is a little questionable. hoping that next year they'll drop the price to a more affordable price

I just picked up the fx30 three weeks ago. That was a month after I made a video telling people to wait to buy it lol. New tech willies aint no joke. I also saw the a7r5 at the camera store where I shop in Korea. The owner forbade me to buy it lol...
Would you say this camera would be could for vlogging. Looking for camera that has a good resolution for photography and for taking videos. I would to love to get the A1 but the down side is there no flip screen, which I really need.
You said Canon do Ai object selection automatically but what if you have car boat human even insect on the same picture. How can you select what you want? I think having human and car simultaneously. Or a car on the road and a boat behind is a possibility. Do Canon have a manual mode to pick the subject recognition.?
Funny that u just uploaded this cause I got the camera in my cart but I am still not sure if I should pull the trigger .. Why can't Sony throw the A7/A9/A1 into a Pentax K body? That would be the greatest camera in history. Sold all my Pentax gear (a lot, £9k worth used) this year and got an open box deal on an A7RIII just to adapt to the few Carl Zeiss Classic manual focus lenses I kept (got the camera more for the glass to be honest). Technologically, the Sony is a marvel and the ergonomics are just bearable, improved with a pinky grip (not battery grip), thick silicone skin and hot shoe mounted thumb rest, but the ergonomics are so far from the K-1 it ain't even funny. The front control wheel is far too low and the rear control wheel far too recessed. Kind of fundamental to get this right on a camera.

Take a serious look at the FX3. Overall awesome for video for many reasons. Main limitation is IMO no internal ND. FX6 solves that problem but more expensive, bigger and can't do stills (albeit FX3 limited res circa 12 Mp). Overall FX3 beats others as can be rigged small compact or fully built out as needed.
Asking as a kind of video 'noob' - I'm looking into getting a new camera to shoot product and food photography and videos. Within the videos I'd like to get some panning shots and/or use a slider for some shots- will the rolling shutter of the Sony a7RV be okay when using the lower video settings (aka not 8k)? Also, I'd love to be able to take it travelling for 'vlog' type content.. that'll be fine right? Sorry if that's a super obvious question but I genuinely haven't touched video settings in my camera since 2019... so essentially starting from scratch :P

Imo canons automatic switching of subjects removes user control on what you want to focus. If multiple different subjects are in the frame how does the canon know which one you want to focus on?
Waiting on my V to arrive!!! I also ordered the IV to upgrade my R3, and the wait is killing me. I live overseas, and Amazon would ship it elsewhere, but not directly here. (Perhaps because they would rather I order it from Amazon Japan. However, Amazon Japan does not offer the same package deal I am getting from Amazon U.S. Well my package arrived at the address I designated it to deliver to, and it is now in the mail headed my way. I have already planned a first shoot with this new camera. I am going to shoot a night photography shoot in Akihabara, known as the city of lights because it is said to have the most electric signs in the world. I hope I get a nice rainfall on the morning of my shoot.

I'm new here so excuse me if I say, I'm surprized the title of the video wasn't: 24 HOURS with the SONY A7RV - SELLING MY "SON to buy it?" I here your passion.
Think you are the only one to mention about the built-in mic. Doesn't the A7IV have face memory too? A7R line is for photographic resolution hence the high MP so it's video weakness makes sense or forgivable. A7S/FX line are opposite, their strength is video and weaker for photo. Now what is interesting would be A9 III or maybe A1 II. They are due for refresh. I don't need 60MP so if A9 III gets a bump from 24MP to 35-40MP that would be a sweet spot. Handle photo , fast action, and video well. Then that leaves A1 II what spec bump would it get or will they just merge A9/A1 lines? Sony has so many segmented lines it is getting messy. Think they should consolidate some. Might also plays into why they don't often go back to older models and add features. They can but, isn't cost effective from a resource perspective plus side benefit of sales cannibalization. Resources would be better utilized focused pushing new features in a newer model since it rolls out so often.

There is a massive difference betwen the A7IV and the A7RV. But the AIV must be enough for 90%.

The OG A7III has face registration too. I believe even the a6300 does too. I’m sure it isn’t nearly as good but I haven’t tested it.

Sony taking all the wrong notes from Canon with that cropping. But that super-tilty screen though!!! Nobody talking about that enough!

set the lense button to change the tracking from human to animal and so on :) Problem solved

Nooo don’t do it the a1 is still superior. Don’t get taken by the hype it is a great camera but the a1 is still better slightly. You don’t really see much of a change your daily shooting by switching because they’re to similar.

@@EleReyProductions I think in some points the A1 is, but some others not. I was considering both, (ive a A7III), went for A7RV bcs of the flip screen + stabilisation. The A1 main points were the sensor which is better for rolling shutter, but that's all.
What are you talking about? The A1 still hast the much superior sensor Exmor RS . The 7RV only has an Exmor R. Autofocus speed of the A1 is MUCH quicker.

Sony's AF can be amazing, but this mode thing does get silly. What if you have a person in a moving vehicle holding a pet and you want the pet in focus? Too man modes. I have the a7iv and basically I just hope what I see is close to what I expect because the viewfinder is so bad I can't really tell. I bought it mostly for video and there is no way on a sunny day to see the lcd, at least not with any degree of confidence or precision.
Not that this will ever happen, but if Sony added the ability of B-Raw, it would be game changing for video.
I think I'll just wait until the A1.2 comes out and make my decision then. There is a lot I like about the A7R5 but too much I would never utilize.

The A7Rv is a great camera, it’s an upgrade in every single way, except one and that was a deal breaker for me…The slow readout speed unfortunately results in Canon Eos R like rolling shutter. Providing you don’t need to pan or move in video, this camera is awesome! I wanted one camera to do it all. I hope the A1 gets the A7RV feathered and the new A1 will be epic!

Depends, the A7-IV probably does 90% of what the A7R-V does.. to me it's a messed up camera.. why 8K?!? Who cares, also they could have made better FPS.. just 10-FPS? 10-FPS is 5 years old already.. like duhhh
Yes she’ll out another 2 grand and when you look at your video you will not notice any difference other than a more practical screen and a few more useless bells and whistles.For me picture quality is the most important thing They have reached the limit in picture quality. Rolling Shutter is something Sony should improve. A Hundred different auto focus modes . You don’t know which ONE to choose. These cameras are for camera reviewers , on RUclips . To use these cameras you need an hour to decide which mode to use . A shout out to Sony for this impartial video.

I'd go sony tbh because of the lens selection. The third party sigma Art lenses give you GMaster quality at a fraction of the cost.

The only way to deal with rolling shutter is a stacked sensor. And I hate the fact that we have to pay double the price for that feature...A1
Fabulous review, Terry. I don't think I'll upgrade but totally agree about the screen/EVF thing on the A74. Having come from FF DSLRs with their magnificent screens and OVFs, mirrorless is just pretty yucky (unless you want to spend enough for a good used SUV). Keep the great stuff coming!
Terry you missed the new AWB, Taylor Jackson and Manny Ortiz both said its the first Sony camera that they'd you it on. Also Manny reckons the Auto ISO is improved as well.
Excellent info thank you. I bought this A7RV & the A7CR for my wife. She hates big cameras. I bought the GM2 70-200 & GM2 24-70 and the teeny 24, 40 & 50 for the bodies.
A good policy I live by is if you have the second or third best thing compared to the first best thing, you shouldn't upgrade. Instead you should wait for the a7R6 or a7R7. I use an a7ii, because my budget is small, but Im avoiding jumping to an a7iii, so that I can save for the a7iv, or even a7v if it gets annpunced.

The a74 is downsampling from 7k to 4k wich makes the 4K image much sharper and more detailed than the a7r5

You said Canon do Ai object selection automatically but what if you have car boat human even insect on the same picture. How can you select what you want? I think having human and car simultaneously. Or a car on the road and a boat behind is a possibility. Do Canon have a manual mode to pick the subject recognition.?
Funny that u just uploaded this cause I got the camera in my cart but I am still not sure if I should pull the trigger .. I am mostly filming and photographing dogs and from what I have seen the new AF is insane for that . I currently own the a7iv as well and it’s just a lot of dough 😅

Sold all my Pentax gear (a lot, £9k worth used) this year and got an open box deal on an A7RIII just to adapt to the few Carl Zeiss Classic manual focus lenses I kept (got the camera more for the glass to be honest).
Technologically, the Sony is a marvel and the ergonomics are just bearable, improved with a pinky grip (not battery grip), thick silicone skin and hot shoe mounted thumb rest, but the ergonomics are so far from the K-1 it ain't even funny. The front control wheel is far too low and the rear control wheel far too recessed. Kind of fundamental to get this right on a camera.

Take a serious look at the FX3. Overall awesome for video for many reasons. Main limitation is IMO no internal ND. FX6 solves that problem but more expensive, bigger and can't do stills (albeit FX3 limited res circa 12 Mp). Overall FX3 beats others as can be rigged small compact or fully built out as needed.

Asking as a kind of video 'noob' - I'm looking into getting a new camera to shoot product and food photography and videos. Within the videos I'd like to get some panning shots and/or use a slider for some shots- will the rolling shutter of the Sony a7RV be okay when using the lower video settings (aka not 8k)? Also, I'd love to be able to take it travelling for 'vlog' type content.. that'll be fine right?

Imo canons automatic switching of subjects removes user control on what you want to focus. If multiple different subjects are in the frame how does the canon know which one you want to focus on?
Waiting on my V to arrive!!! I also ordered the IV to upgrade my R3, and the wait is killing me. I live overseas, and Amazon would ship it elsewhere, but not directly here. (Perhaps because they would rather I order it from Amazon Japan. However, Amazon Japan does not offer the same package deal I am getting from Amazon U.S. Well my package arrived at the address I designated it to deliver to, and it is now in the mail headed my way. I have already planned a first shoot with this new camera. I am going to shoot a night photography shoot in Akihabara, known as the city of lights because it is said to have the most electric signs in the world. I hope I get a nice rainfall on the morning of my shoot.

For what you're doing an a6000 would give you the same results
I totally agree with you 8k is not needed. if you mostly do content on RUclips you're not going to really tell much of a difference from 4k.

Think you are the only one to mention about the built-in mic. Doesn't the A7IV have face memory too?
A7R line is for photographic resolution hence the high MP so it's video weakness makes sense or forgivable. A7S/FX line are opposite, their strength is video and weaker for photo.
Now what is interesting would be A9 III or maybe A1 II. They are due for refresh. I don't need 60MP so if A9 III gets a bump from 24MP to 35-40MP that would be a sweet spot. Handle photo , fast action, and video well. Then that leaves A1 II what spec bump would it get or will they just merge A9/A1 lines?
Sony has so many segmented lines it is getting messy. Think they should consolidate some. Might also plays into why they don't often go back to older models and add features. They can but, isn't cost effective from a resource perspective plus side benefit of sales cannibalization. Resources would be better utilized focused pushing new features in a newer model since it rolls out so often.
