As a beginner drummer (for about 2 years), this song infuriates me. Those 16th notes with one hand on the hi-hat are so miserably difficult that i am loosing my mind. It shouldn’t be THAT hard, but getting the correct hand movement is just SO HARD.
Thom and Johnny are beyond any doubt in their capability to continue producing mind-blowing stuff. And in the face of this great new piece, I want to truly acknowledge Tom Skinner and this totally relaxed drumming style.
@@brianlaudrupchannel i do agree that it's repetitive, but I don't think it's as static or as underdeveloped as the songs on the king of limbs. I do think that most of the songs on the king of limbs are actually too overcomplicated, which is the opposite of this song, since it's pretty simplistic. I don't think repetitiveness in itself is a bad thing; it can be satisfyingly hypnotic in my opinion. For sure, this song isn't their greatest work, but I think it's still pretty good. I guess it kind of reminds me of Scatterbrain, very simplistic and repeating beat.
Just in case there are any music theory geeks in here (I'm sure there are) the polymeter verse groove is: - 3 x 4/4 beat pattern = 12 beats (24 1/8 notes) - 8 x 7/8 beat pattern = 28 beats (56 1/8 notes) Total: 12 + 28 = 40 beats = 10 bars. So the drums just play a 4/4 beat for 10 bars, and in that time, the 4/4 and 7/8 polymeter riff perfectly lines up again. Very clever..! Regardless of whether they thought about it mathematically when writing it, it's still interesting to understand what's actually happening, and how it works.
Love this kind of discussion/debate after a new Yorke/Greenwood track drops! Thanks for sharing! I actually think there is a bar of 6/8 in the guitar riff...but either way the math adds up. The full 10 bar guitar cycle (to my ear) is: 4 x 4/4 2 x 7/8 (3+2+2) 1 x 6/8 1x 4/4 2x 7/8 1x 6/8 Total: 80 8th notes or 10 bars of 4/4 (which the drums are playing as you pointed out.) Either way still lines up with your math! Side note: In the chorus, I hear a kind of hemiola going on. Yorke sings 3 x 5/8 patterns starting on the 2nd 8th note of the bar (15 eight notes + 1 8th rest= 16 eights total) over two bars (i.e. 16 8th notes.) Fun Fun!
This pretty much confirms the theory that Jonny and Thom together are why Radiohead sounds like Radiohead. Those two together and it will always be fine, no matter what name it's under or who they collaborate with.
