That water dripping is sound engineering perfection. It's one of the most memorable production bits I've ever heard in all my years, it's under my skin and brings me back to this masterpiece time and time again
My hunch is that it's an Elektron Machinedrum using the Sinus "GND-SN" machine into it's built-in reverb, but I would love someone who knows better to chime in!
Fukiko Takase's dancing is just extraordinary. Her movements are stunning, full of seeming perfection in expression, so well defined and choreographed for the song.
It is so odd, everyone has such amazing things to say about the dancing, Usually I love to see Thom dance, he is mesmerizing and I watch Lotus Flower at least once a day, and lose myself in live concerts like Bonnaroo 2006, watching his unashamedly crazy dancing. But this one just completely freaks me out. It is the girl, her movements unsettle me. They are so completely alien and weird. I don't feel the expression, just distinctly uncomfortable and triggered. I have to move to the next song whenever it comes on. So strange, I don't know why I find it so uncomfortable. Am I the only person who does not appreciate her art?
@@JudySam1988 Thom knew her skills and employed Fukiko to be the mirror to his moves. She was asked to diversify at each sequence so he could mirror hers and do likewise. Try to see it as as a live dance expression of ongoing research in a design project or when someone is looking for creative insipration in music by listening to other artists. A bit like a focus group bouncing ideas off each other. Try not to focus on Fukiko, but in the way they interact. I believe they are meant to be the same person, one is a projection of the other. Think of when you dance in a club and get lost in it. You think you are looking like this, but how do other people see you? This is what I interpret from this video and I hope it helps you to engage with it a little more.
@@JudySam1988 It's not her choreography so it's not really "her art", it's Wayne McGregor's, the studio head she danced for at the time. Takase was the leading dancer in Paloma Faith's Only Love Can Hurt Like This from the BRIT Awards in 2015 though, where she's amazing.
@@okyouknowwhatever more like it's _their_ art. even if she had no input on the choreography somehow (unlikely imo), her interpretation of it is a prominent part of the piece

Same. I just ran into Justin Peck (choreographer/director) recently, and we were chatting about our favorite music videos of all time. This one came up in my mind.
I can't believe how much Thom has grown over the years... If you watch the documentary Radiohead made about life on tour in 1998 called Meeting People Is Hard, you can see how much Radiohead, (Thom especially), were completely drained from being in the spotlight and how absolutely miserable he was. This video as well as the other stuff from King of limbs shows Thom completely free to express himself artistically without the fear of rejection or disapproval. I don't know what happened in Thom's life between these two periods of time but whatever it was caused him to be much more at peace with himself and his life ... What a lucky guy.
You are right, I saw him singing with Michael Stipe in a show for Tibet, he was about 30 and looked like a frightened teen... Until he killed the song in the climax ending... Went back to a misery right after he finished singing. It's good for music that he found a way to make peace with life and himself:-)
I really start to like Thom Yorke's dancing, mainly because I've never seen anything like it. And there are some cool moves. And he seems to have alot of fun doing it.

The lyrics about people (particularly an Ingenue -- a young and naive woman) getting you into messes and leaving you there, fools rushing into situations, and all the while knowing the danger but being pulled by forces too big for them, being part of someone's collection.. It really really resonates with me. This song is so beautiful but is also sometimes hard to listen to. But there is something cathartic in the tears that come. It all happened near the end of grad school for me. I achieved what I set out to, but it cost so much.

This song hits home I've always had but for a long time I wasn't aware of it and God I am so grateful for this track. It's like the sounds I've heard in mind in my early childhood and finally someone had enough empathy to show them in a song. It seem to me like I would know it since my previous life, even tho didn't even knew what Radiohead was two years ago.
Hey pews, I was wondering if you've watch Mishima: a life in four chapters as its about your favourite author, it has a great blu ray release in the uk by criterion and I've heard the film is great.
I think this song is about the desire to be a kid forever flying in the face of natural aging. "If I'm not there now physically, I'm always before you come what may." So beautiful
It doesn't bother me that people are watching this because of this Dan guy. Obviously Dan has an interest in Atoms for Peace if he took the time to learn this song. As long as people are listening to this and enjoying it, it doesn't matter. The thing that bothers me is that people are arguing over how this is discovered. It's a great song! Who cares?
I have been listening to and watching Thom Yorke for years and... it kind of fills me with this happiness and pride to have seen him evolve throughout the years... and here he is now, still making music and dancing and being great. Rock on, Thom :]
I was extremely impressed with the song and the video but I couldn't get what it was about. I tried to examine it, and here is what I've got. According to my analysis, I may assume that this song depicts the endless process of recreation of the Universe. The word “Ingenue” is translated from Latin as “genuine”. That’s why I think it has nothing to do with a girl or any romantic relationships. As a matter of fact, it might be even a game of syllables “In-ge-nue” - “Ge-nu-ine”. Thus, the author may refer to God, Nature or the Universe. It seems that the lines “You know like the back of your hand your bell jar, your collection” are appealing to the fact that people are like seeds of the dandelion kept in a God’s jar as a collection. Whilst the lines “The seeds of the dandelion you blow away” accentuate that “God” is constantly playing with his creatures. He blows away the seeds, lets them grow into flowers and picks their seeds up into his jar all over again. These lines represent the endless circle of life and death, a constant reproduction. The lines “You got me into this mess, so you get me out” and “Fools rushing in” emphasize the author’s irritation towards the whole process. While other “seeds” want to get into God’s collection, the author wants to get out. He wants to break free from this infinite life circle. The last lines “Gone with a touch of your hand. Move through the moment though it betrays. Transformations. Jackals and flames” may be depicting the process of dying, when a body overcomes certain metamorphoses and where the concept of time and space is being distorted. It may seem rather ironical that in the last moment the narrator feels unready to die and asks God to give him some more time: “Just give me more time. I hope and pray. I mistake all you say”. While dying the author is figuratively divided into two states - “before death” and “after life”. That might be the reason why he uses such an irrational expression “If I knew now what I knew then”. If you watch the clip more carefully, you may notice that this process is being visualized quite prominently. It shows not only a life circle but also the duality of the world represented by the union of opposites - a man and a woman, metaphorical Yin-Yang. Nevertheless, the end of the clip shows that everything comes to its starting point and the process will be inevitably repeated.
This is what a C. G. Jung´s fan would think of this song: it refers to a dialogue between a man and his (what Jung called) "Anima", which is the personification of a man´s soul and assumes the image of a young, naive, ethereal and beautiful woman (such as the muses, the virgins, the houris, the fearies, etc. present in all cultures). This same image is “projected” by the man in every woman he loves along his life, and this way his Love reveals to him his real path, guiding him towards his fate.
oh, damnn man... i am so sorry. i mean, i am glad that it struck us the same way and all... but i didnt see your comment before i went and posted my own, and that how i saw the video/song was already clearly stated by you. i apologize if you felt i stole your thoughts on this or plagiarized your feelings towards it. (but i still kinda love that we both saw/heard such similar things in it).
Even if some people found this through Dan Howell, just incase you don't know who I'm talking about, who cares? They obviously came here because they like the music, and either wanted to hear more or hear what it usually sounds like. Finding music isn't a bad thing, and it doesn't matter where you found it from if you like it.
I was not only brought here by Dan, but I've known this song for quite a long time, along with Thom Yorke. People are dissing on Dan for bringing people who OBVIOUSLY want to listen to this song fully? There's only a short clip of him playing, and if you do not know who Dan is.. Dan is a very talented you tuber who creates videos that teenagers and even adults can relate to. He's got a music taste like every one of you guys.. There is no need to diss on him for showing fans a song that he can play on piano.
+Anime Inhale People liking the song? Great. People spamming comments about him? Not great. It comes across as crediting him when he did some shitty cover of it. If the 'fans' weren't so obnoxious, then people 'dissing him' wouldn't be obnoxious back.
Frighten Me just saying "Dan brought me here" isn't spamming with obnoxious comments, its a good song. If you want to se obnoxious comments, I can give you that.
+mastersoftoday I beg to differ, sorry. It depends of what kind of music video you're talking about. If we, for example, take one of Justin Bieber's, Ariana Grande's or Katy Perry's clips it's all about pure commercial and no "art". So Mainstream music videos are a "no" to me.
@@dokephenuc1343 art can be commercial, and while i don’t like it, music videos are an art form by definition. “this music video is art” sounds about as dumb as saying “this soup is food”

Sali Ab I don't even know what to call his kind of attractive. He's not the most physically beautiful man I've ever seen by any means, but there's something incredibly attractive about him in any case. I think it's just his personality that shines through. Sort of quiet, but quietly passionate and persistent. That, and he's musically brilliant. I think that's why he's attractive, at least to me.
Love this. The song and the interpretative dance is the dance of two lovers in their relationship. How they mirror one another, and go through it together.
Woah okay so a couple of months ago I was getting into Atoms for Peace and I had this song and another on constant replay. But then they just kinda faded away and I forgot about them. But this morning, as I was watching videos of Dan playing this on his piano, I was so into this song and I listened to the Thom Yorke version. on one hand, this song is so uniquely incredible that it feels like it deserves to be This Song Only, Ingenue. but on the other hand, I would die for more music exactly like this
I always come back to this song because I love it. I have listened to many artists in all these years but none surpasses the talented Thom Yorke 💜
Thom was on it with the funky emotional dance performance before Sia tackled similar themes
I agree.
piemakerproductions To that I reply with Zero 7 Somersault
Most beautiful music video I've seen in a while.
I feel like lyrics touch on something far more deep than what we can understand. Brilliant musician
I could watch this forever. So haunting yet so hypnotizing.
I cannot overstate how much I love Thom Yorke
pewdiepie brought himself here
Wait...
didn't know pewdiepie had great music taste
Damn. Didn’t know you knew Radiohead and Atoms for Peace. So... meme review?
Hey pews, I was wondering if you've watch Mishima: a life in four chapters as its about your favourite author, it has a great blu ray release in the uk by criterion and I've heard the film is great.
great song pew
1:30 That move by Fukiko is genius, and then Thom's attempt at an imitation pissingly comical.
still, his dancing is good in its own way. she is a trained dancer so of course she is going to have great unity and movements.
Copying is not the purpose, not to me at least
I can't get over how amazing of a dancer she is
I think that was the purpose :)
yeah, she's amazing
Thom Yorke could make a song consisting solely of the sounds of an 80s printer, a 90s modem and his vocals, and it would STILL be brilliant!
Hey old comment
This video is wonderful and that dancer is amazing!
Thom's not too shabby himself.
Thom's voice is so soothing
this is honestly my favourite music video of all time
Thom Yorke... This man is a real genius.
This literally sounds like my entire childhood. I remember my sister playing me this song on piano. :)
I love this. Such a beautiful concept
Great analysis Svet Lana, I'll take it.
@@freskystyley4134 Thank you very much! It means much for me :)
@@jorgelomeli5173 I appreciate that! Thank you so very much! :)
underrated comment, great analysis!
there's no way this song could've been any better... it's just perfect
What does Jung think a woman's soul personifies as?
Joe Alias Animus. The male principle.
oh, damnn man... i am so sorry. i mean, i am glad that it struck us the same way and all... but i didnt see your comment before i went and posted my own, and that how i saw the video/song was already clearly stated by you. i apologize if you felt i stole your thoughts on this or plagiarized your feelings towards it. (but i still kinda love that we both saw/heard such similar things in it).
The music video enforces this further with their movements and all, so genius!
El Gondolero i wonder if Thom saw thls because his new album’s name is Anima:)
Even if some people found this through Dan Howell, just incase you don't know who I'm talking about, who cares? They obviously came here because they like the music, and either wanted to hear more or hear what it usually sounds like. Finding music isn't a bad thing, and it doesn't matter where you found it from if you like it.
Preach
This song is so beautiful that I want to bathe in it.
Let's take a bath!!! Lol!
I did, lmafo
i came here just after a shower
This song is just so insanely good. You don't get it at first, but once you do, you can't get out of it.
+Anime Inhale who the fuck is Dan?
J Nielsen Tomer Danisnotonfire.
+J Nielsen Tomer Read the comment.
This video is art
+Infinite Stars all music videos are art
+mastersoftoday I beg to differ, sorry. It depends of what kind of music video you're talking about. If we, for example, take one of Justin Bieber's, Ariana Grande's or Katy Perry's clips it's all about pure commercial and no "art".
So Mainstream music videos are a "no" to me.
This art is video. 😯
@@mastersoftoday nah
@@dokephenuc1343 art can be commercial, and while i don’t like it, music videos are an art form by definition. “this music video is art” sounds about as dumb as saying “this soup is food”
it always gets me teary from when they lean back to back and sink down
I listened to this masterpiece for all day, a day in Lisbon without food, without friends, completely alone.. Love this song, it touch me deeply in the soul, and beyond
I always wonder what the actors in music videos react like when they're told "so yeah basically, we're gonna do all this weird shit"
Lol
r u serios bro. its thom yorke he probably just improvised all the weird shit.
Lila Silva I think he was mostly referring to the girl dancing with him (Fukkiko Takase).
TheYellowWombat Yeah, but she's a dancer too - so all about this interpretive stuff. That's why Thom snagged her anyways. Either way, I think it's great.

Um I can. He is nowhere near a genius friend, you may want to look into the term.

Genius: an exceptionally intelligent person or one with exceptional skill in a particular area of activity
Thom Yorke and Radiohead have released some of the highest acclaimed albums/songs of all time. I'd say this falls within the definition.

это прекрасно. Я увидела этот клип однажды на телеканале 2х2 в музыкальном блоке, не пожалела, что осталась смотреть и слушать
This is one of those songs where I can close my eyes and imagine a cool environment around me.
Lyrics:
You know like the back of your hand
Who let 'em in?
You got me into this mess
You get me out
You know like the back of your hand
Your bell jar
Your collection
Ingenue
You got me into this mess
Fools rushing in, yeah
And they know it
The seeds of the dandelion you blow away
In good time, I hope I pray
If I'm not there now, physically
I'm always before you, come what may
And you know it
Fools rushing in, yeah
Well you know it
Who let them in?
Yeah well you know it
Gone with a touch of your
Gone with a touch of your hand
Move through the moment
Though it betrays
transformations
Jackals and flames
If I knew now what I knew then
Just give me more time I hope and pray
I mistake all you say
The seeds of the dandelion you blow away
This is a really good song.

Such a fascinating song and video. He is getting sexier with age omg!
ClaritaColdplay u ar not alone #dancingyorke #sexyashell
Blasphemy! Thom has always been sexy.
Girl, he's gotten buff too 😏😛
YES IM NOT THE ONLY ONE
Gracias Thom por existir.
Like where he just played it by himself and now I'm here listening to the actual version which is so weird because this was like one of my favourites like 10 months ago then I was brought back to it today weeeeirrdd
This is genuinely an amazing song. Thanks thom
2024 and whenever I come back to this song it still feels like the first time.
The greatest father-daughter dance ever.
