You’re the only person I’ve seen analyzing Dolores his voice when she’s not doing the whisper thing. I always get disappointed in vocal coaches that just kind of smile through that and keep waiting for the next person to sing. You are one of the best, Jessica! You said exactly what I thought she was doing anyway.

The Madrigals are an extraordinary family who lives hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a charmed place called the Encanto. At the age of 5 every children is given a magical gift, all but one Mirabel(voice by Stephanie Beatrix {aka Rosa from Brooklyn nine nine}) However she may be the Madrigals last hope when she discovers that the magic of the Encanto is in danger.

Alma is the mother to triplets ( Pepa, Julieta and Bruno.
Pepa married Felix and had Dolores (sound waves on her dress means she has super hearing. She’s the second oldest grand child of alma at 21. Her younger brothers are Camilo ( shapeshifting) and Antonio ( his gift is in the movie) Julieta married Agustin and had Isabela 22, lusia 19 and Mirabel 15.)
      Here is the song order:
      The Family Madrigal
      Waiting on a Miracle ( Maribel’s I want song)
      Surface Pressure ( Luisa’s song)
      We Don’t talk about Bruno
What Else Can I do ( Isabela)

Mirabel actually does sound young in most of the songs. You should listen to the other songs, especially her solo ballad called… “Waiting on a miracle“. You can also listen to the opening song called “welcome to the family Madrigal“. Even though she has a low voice, she uses a nasal tone that gives it a youthful clean sound.

Yes. I love the emotional range that Beatirz has but she sounds too old.
By contrast Pepa sounds too young. If you miss the fifty years thing is is easy to think she is in her early forties. The actress, Gaitan was in her thirties.

    • @thequietjuan

Definitely review Mirabel's "Waiting on a Miracle" (behind the scene's fact - Beatriz gave birth to her first born the day after she recorded Waiting on a Miracle - so, for a 9-month pregnant alto - she is beyond amazing). The section of We Don't Talk About Bruno where all voices step in (i.e. madrigal singing - hence the lastname of the story's family: Madrigal) is pure genius - Lin has outdone himself. But in typical Broadway fashion, I don't think he stipulated that he needed to hire a 15 year old to be the voice of Mirabel - he seemed to choose the voices based on their abilities - not on people's predetermined opinion of how cartoon characters should sound by their personal interpretation of the story line's age/description... just like in real life. The majority of the music in Encanto has the task of either furthering the story or giving the viewer insight into the characters.

@@thequietjuan Very well explained. It's a bit like bringing a book to life. No matter how well you may do there will always be persons who disagree with aspects of your interpretation because it contrasts with how they think certain parts or characters should look and sound.

    @karentecott640 Год назад +65

Lin wrote a gossip song as a way of giving voice to each family member who they couldn't give a solo to. It's very much a story of family dynamics for good and bad. The trauma of one generation is passed down to others causing misunderstanding between family members who love eachother.

  • @wolfe6220
    @wolfe6220 Год назад +62

    Excellent reaction!!!
Fun fact: the shape shifter is voiced by a young man who really isn't trained in singing, but he adds a lot of nuance to his part.
2nd fun fact: Isabella, the one in pink who was promised a "perfect" life. At the end with all of the characters dancing around Mirabel while she is piecing the vision together, you can hear Isabella sing, "I'm fine, I'm fine and I'm fine", as if she's trying to reassure herself everything will be fine.
3rd fun fact: Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz) sings a song early on titled "Waiting on a Miracle". While recording that song, Stephanie was in labor. She delivered her own "little miracle" 36 hours later.
I hope you'll listen to more songs from Encanto; there's not a bad one in the bunch. Family Madrigal would be a good one, it introduces the main characters. If you are planning on watching the movie (which you should, it's not your ordinary Disney movie), I advise skipping Dos Oruguitos or All of Me as they contain important spoilers.

    *Quick Character list and Abilities.*
Pepa: Her emotions control the weather, she blames bruno for ruining her wedding day because he stressed her out *”Bruno said it looks like rain”*
Dolores: she has super hearing. She’s always whispering because her ears are very sensitive. And that’s why *”Grew to live in fear of bruno Stuttering and Mumbling… I associate him with the sound of falling sand”*
Camillo: he’s a shapeshifter. He’s the family clown, the funny guy. And bruno scared him as a kid that’s why he describes him as 7ft with rats. (But in reality Bruno is just a few inches taller than his right now)
Isabella: She controls plant life. And is literally the family favorite, and is seen as perfect. That’s why her part was vey pink and bright, and Bruno’s prediction was her life would become amazing.
Bruno: He can see the future. He is the black sheep and is known as “The villlage crazy guy”. People associated him with evil or bad luck because the public only saw the negativity of his future visions

Dolores (Adassa) sings quietly because her Gift is super-hearing. (See the movie to learn the story behind the Gifts.) You might have noticed in her section that sounds that are normally in the background (i.e. her footsteps and head movements) are brought forward, so we're hearing that section through her Gift. Trivia: The recording for this film was all done via Zoom, thanks to the pandemic. When it came to recording Adassa's section of this song, she nailed it on the first take.
The shape-shifter is Camilo, a play on 'chameleon'. He and Dolores are cousins to Mirabel. Felix and Pepa are Mirabel's uncle and aunt. Isabella and Luisa (the lady struggling with the potted plant) are Mirabel's older sisters.
Bruno's Gift is seeing the future. He's not making promises; he's telling people what he sees. Unfortunately, sometimes people don't like what they hear, and unfairly blame Bruno for causing whatever it is (weight gain, hair loss, etc.).
If you haven't seen 'Encanto' yet, I hope you will soon. It's fantastic. Lin-Manuel Miranda's songs are fabulous (he gives us a lovely musical pun in this song), and Germaine Franco is the first Latinx woman to score an animated Disney feature film. I will say that this song is a red herring concerning the character of Bruno...

  • @J1ntu
    @J1ntu Год назад +71

Bruno doesn't make promises as much as he tell people what happens, whether it's good or bad but people never want to hear the bad news
Also, you can see Bruno in the background in the scene with Dolores (the woman who whispers) and the final chorus where everyone is singing is called a Madrigal (just like their last name)

One of my favourite things about this song is how each part of the song fits so well with the character.
Spoilers for the setting of the movie:
Dolores' power is super hearing. The reverbations on all the sound effects in her section make the room they're in seem large, empty, and silent, and her own voice when she sings has a whisper-like quality to it.
Camillo's power is shapeshifting. He is a performer and a storyteller. He sings as though he's telling a ghost story and he's playing a character.
Isabella's power is growing flowers. She grew up as the perfect one and the princess of the family. The music for her section is very clean and pretty, and she sings in a more classic disney style, as though she is a princess waiting for love.

I'm kind of obsessed with this movie, so I've watched a ton of different people react to this movie and the music but I think you're the only one to pull up the actual sheet music. I love that so much! The girl in Pink (Isabella, the eldest of Mirabel's sisters) actually sings that way specifically because of who she is as a character. Later in she has another song ('What else can I do?") where she has some character growth and it really reflects in her voice. This movie is beautiful, as is the music. I really think you will enjoy it and I hope to see more songs from Thai movie from you!

At the end, the members of the family Madrigal sing in a musical madrigal :)
    Furthermore:
The one with the weather-related power has weather-related lines (Pepa; it floods her brain), the one with super hearing has sound-related lines (Dolores whispers, she could always hear, and so on), the shapeshifter has physique-related lines (Camillo describes Bruno as being 7 feet tall), and the flowery one has flower-related lines (Isabella's power would grow like the grapes that thrive on the vines).

The magic of this song is the last part, where they show that every character's story can create a harmony when brought together, even if at the surface, the characters seem opposed to each other. The surename of the familily (Madrigal) is an easter egg referencing this reinessance musical style. It also happens to be highly relevant to then ending of the story.

Here's the point I'd like to make.
The song starts with a more traditional sound, the piano accentuating the rhythm, the more traditional latin percussion, mids really full with sound... and then Dolores begins to sing.
Dolores is on the periphery of the family. She hears everything, and so no one feels really comfortable around her. They know that she knows all the things they've ever really whispered or spoken of in their life around her. She's something of an outsider; gifted, but not trusted. So when she speaks to Mirabel, the music changes suddenly.
All traditional instruments are gone. We're left with a high contrast sonic juxtaposition between high bell and low bass, supported only by the sudden addition of a dry electronic trap drum beat in half time. All the comfortable mids in the sound package have been removed, and it all feels suddenly empty, clandestine. It's a perfect move to accentuate that Dolores is speaking in coded phrasing to Mirabel, willing her to get what she's not saying out loud. The tapping feet in the second half add a harsh urgency to her words, with the only other sounds coming in to make a swell that cuts out to her her final plea, "Do you understand?"
Only after Dolores is done, the one separate from the rest of the family because of her knowledge of Bruno's continued presence, do the other instruments associated with the family and their heritage come back in to fill that empty space. She's still whispering in an undercurrent to Mirabel, but we don't hear her anymore. We don't want to. She's on the outside, and it's the inside members of the family who've taken over the song now; the instrumentation reflects that, almost drowning Dolores out.
This song is a bloody masterclass in composition and arranging. Don't even get me started on the sheer class in the lyricism.

As an occasional comedy teacher and director, you set a great model for giving notes to students. Clarifying goals and purpose is so much more valuable than just a list of do/don't rules. It sets them up to continue making their own discoveries and growing as artists without relying on being told what to do. You teach people how to teach themselves.

I've reached 3:42, and you're helping open my eyes to the subtle art of this song.
I want to express why this fact you've observed about Pepa's tone change might fit the context outright, but I don't want to risk spoiling you in case you haven't seen the movie yet.

Hello Jessica from New Zealand. I've followed you from the beginning & always look forward to seeing you again & all the advice you have to share with us.
I know you probably have oodles of requests coming out your ears but if you do want to hear something different from the "norm", I have a song so beautiful I've not been able to stop listening to it from my first listening experience.
    * Song name is: "Song of the Siren" by the band The Cocteau Twins.
Elizabeth Fraser is the singer's name & her voice is the "Magic" behind every song.
    * Both the songs "Song of the Siren" & "Alice" feature on the movie Soundtrack of "Lovely Bones"!
    * Elizabeth also appears on the "Massive Attack" Album singing the song "Teardrop"!

I reacted the same the first time I heard Mirable, I was expected to hear like a Disney Princess, like every other main character of Disney, idk maybe like Frozen or something like but The character of Mirable, is about being non perfect she is the opposite of the girl in pink which is the perfect sister, Mirabel is not a princess, yet she is the most important part of the family and if you watch the movie will understand, she has a purpose, even though she has no magic like the other members of the family.

you should definitely see this film if you havn't yet, its amazing and this song is filled with foreshadowing
and tbh i think Mirabel sounds youthful, but that's bc i had a deep voice as a 15 year old too lol

If your want to hear more form the main character you should react to The Family Madrigal and then Waiting for a Miracle. Two completely different tones from each song.

That was... just so on point! Please, please make more reaction videos to the Encanto songs. You have interprete "We don't talk about Bruno" much better than other You Tube artists. And please... watch the movie afterwards. I am really interested in your opinion just by hearing the songs and don't understanding the whole story.
    Anyway...
    Great Job!

Thanks for sharing, I really liked hearing your breakdown of the voices. And your editing is excellent to follow your explanations. I recommend watching the movie, it is good for a Disney movie. But watching the first song, "The Family Madrigal" will give you insight into the characters and an opportunity to hear more of Mirabel's (Stephanie Beatriz) voice. And I would love to hear your analysis of Luisa's (Jessica Darrow) song, Surface Pressure.

I’m kind of surprised it’s taking you this long to get to this music, LOL. I am ever thinking I was late back in February. Watch the whole movie, all the music is incredible, but if you can’t watch the movie at least watch all the music videos from it because again all the music is incredible. The story is incredible too.

There just isn't a bad song in this movie. The two most popular are this, and Surface Pressure. However all of them are outstanding. I suggers you listen to them in the order they are in the movie. That way you get the most out of each, and also get to know the characters.

I'm surprised that you didn't mention the polyphonic madrigal form of the song. Not that I know much about it, I only learned it from watching other people react. Bit of an Easter egg from Lin-Manuel Miranda, I guess, since the family name of the characters is also Madrigal

I'd love to see your reaction to Angelina Jordan. The first should be Bohemian Rhapsody on America's Got Talent ( age 13) , then "I Put a Spell on You," and "I'm Feeling Good" at age 10, and then so many more. She is unique and will blow you away. Also a not very well known band, I've mentioned before, "The Accidentals." Finally, you've heard Amira Willighagen, now you need to hear the young opera singer, Emanne Beesha (Arabic, won Arabs Have Got Talent, and now lives in Florida. Look at her audition on AGL!
