      "I told you it's a cheetah" ehh nope. That's a jaguar. A cheetah has tear-duct lines on it's face and spots on it's body. A jaguar has circles on it's body.
      Bruno is 50 years old and he has become superstitious because for 35 years (he spent 10 years living in the walls) they told him his visions make bad things happen. That will harm your mind and it shows in the OCD he developed.
      "I think Abuela is making the cracks" yes, partly. And here we have what is the main theme of this movie generational trauma. Abuela is so stuck in the past that she forces everyone to be perfect. Then she saw a granddaughter that looked almost exactly like she looked in the past and tried to relive her past through Isabella forcing her to be perfect in every sense and forcing the marriage to a guy that looks like her Pedro... Isabella's reaction to Mariano is beautiful and funny: punch him in the nose with a flowerbud. Because she wants something true, not pretty as she said in her song.
      Mirabel's power? Family therapist.
      Oh and my favourite power is Isabella at the end.

      I really think the magic didn't give Mirabel door cause grandma here tried to cheat the system to get her a power that would be "useful" for the community and not for Mirabel cause her two sisters power are conveniently useful for others sake and not them. we also know the girls were guilt tripped into accepting the roles forced on them. if she had a gift not "useful" for the family the movie would have happened the same except maybe mirabel power could have been she can laway thread a needle on the 1st try. the magic that saved them also saw they need to change and used Mirabel as it unknown champion.

    The confrontation with the soldiers was not specifically about Pedro. It was probably the real-life "thousand days war" in Colombia from 1899 to 1902 in which civil unrest resulted in villages being ransacked and residents were displaced as refugees. Pedro sacrificed his life to stop the attackers to save the others.

    The whole town is not one family, they all escaped together from their town that was being attacked. Pedro sacrificed himself trying to buy the others time to escape, but Alma didn’t run and she watched him get killed with a machete. The magic raised a mountain range around what became their town, cutting them off from the outside world to keep them safe. She never had time to grieve or deal with the trauma of loosing her home and watching her husband get murdered. She had three babies to raise alone and a whole town looking to her for leadership.
    Dolores always knew about Bruno being in the walls, she even says that to Camilo in that song towards the end. To me, the fact that she kept the secret about Bruno living in the walls for a whole decade, but couldn’t keep Mirabel’s secret through one whole dinner, seems kinda sus. We know from the “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” song that she was in love with Mariano and that he was going to propose to Isabela after dinner. I’m not saying that she purposely set out to ruin the dinner, but maybe subconsciously…

    • @brandyanderson3522
      @brandyanderson3522 2 года назад +118

      So I've seen this comment a few times on some reactions but to me it makes perfect sense on why Dolores doesn't tell about Bruno. Nor do I think tell about Mirabel was to stop the proposal.
      This is because the very structure of the family. That and the roles in a family that their powers represent. Dolores plays the role of family gossip, she hears everything. She is the one to tell us Mirabel didn't get a gift and she gives up Louisa being nervous really easily. But also think about the roles Bruno plays in the family. First he was the black sheep and than he was the family outcast. When Bruno left Dolores was only 11 and in her verse of WDTAB she starts off saying "grew to live in fear of Bruno stuttering or stumbling." So first there is this fear of Bruno, the same that made him the Boogeyman to Camilo. I think she continues to keep his secret as she grows up for two reason (1) Everyone is trying to not upset Abuela and talking about Bruno does. You could also included Pepa here too. It becomes ingrained in them to not mention Bruno. It hurts the family that he is gone but it also plays as a relief because of how they and the town viewed him. (2) As she understands what Bruno had to go through. I'd assume people would be a little afraid you overheard a secret of theirs and be a little stand offish. I think her last line in WDTAB shows she understood Bruno got a bad rap in the family and community. Also if you look at the doors Brunos and Dolores are the only one's with eyes open. As if their gifts let them see a little bit more of a person
      This is already long so I'll just quickly touch on the proposal. Simply but I don't think it was a sabotage because I don't think that for Dolores being with Mariano was ever an actual option. She had the feeling for him but she didn't feel seen only heard. Which is the opposite of Isabela. So to somehow put a stop to The Proposal with a felt just like a prolonging the inevitable. And also again we we would touch on this family structure and everything going to please Abuela

      Probably Dolores was stressed out because their gifts were fading and working very irregular and since she can hear everything that probably set her off. I would be crazy if I had Dolores or Pepa’s gift.

    • @ajbumotad2488
      @ajbumotad2488 2 года назад +16

      I think one of the reasons why Dolores cannot fully hear Bruno is because he is hiding in a wall where Casita (the house) isn't alive. I think there is also a barrier in the place where Casita cannot interfere either the gift of Dolores. Remember, Casita can't help Mirabel inside Burno's room, so I think there is a barrier that I associate as a weakness of their gifts. Additionally, in the song "We don't talk about Bruno," Dolores only states that she associates Bruno with falling sand, meaning she cannot fully hear her Tio. That's only my opinion!

    • @lilybirdflowergum8683
      @lilybirdflowergum8683 Год назад +30

      Dolores didn’t actually keep Bruno completely secret. She keeps saying stuff like “The rats talking in the walls” which is a clear reference to Bruno. Dolores cannot keep her mouth shut, and she probably tried to say stuff about Bruno, but nobody would listen or reprimanded her for hurting Abuela’s feelings. So now she just disguises those mentions of Bruno to keep herself from bursting. Dolores has never been good at keeping secrets. Nobody around her has cared enough to listen unless she’s extremely blunt.
      She also kept referring to Bruno in present tense during her portion of the song. If Mirabel paid enough attention, she would have noticed what Dolores was trying to imply. But that’s the thing about Dolores. Nobody actually sees her. Which is why it’s so important that Mariano says, “I see you.” Because nobody really cared about what Dolores was saying aside from what they wanted to hear and kinda ignored her, really.

    'Encanto' translates roughly as 'enchantment'. Camilo's name is inspired by the chameleon, due to his shapeshifting ability.
    No, Mirabel didn'ty stop time during 'Waiting for a Miracle'. The song takes place in her mind, at the speed of thought, and film-time is slowed down (telescoped) so that we can see it.
    The candle isn't in Bruno's tower; that's Abuela's room, as we can see from the part where Mirabel winds up overhearing Abuela talking about the cracks in Casita's walls. Casita is like the TARDIS in 'Doctor Who', creating large new rooms for each child as a Gift is received. This is pointed out by the one little girl as they enter Antonio's new room: 'it's bigger on the inside?!!!!!', a phrase heard repeatedly when non-Time Lords enter the TARDIS. One can argue that Casita even created the spaces between the walls as a refuge for Bruno when he left the family.
    Actually, Dolores could hear Bruno the whole time; she says so in 'We Don't Talk About Bruno', and admits to Camilo in 'All of You' that she did. It was just so ingrained into all of the children that Bruno was an off-limits topic. Mirabel is Abuela's successor, having no Gift, but being the guardian of the Gift.
    Trivia: Alan Tudyk, Disney's 'good luck charm', voices Pico, the toucan.

    Agustin has the symbols of his three daughters (a flower for Isabela and mismatched socks - one with weights for Luisa and the other in the style of Mirabel's) embroidery

    a Madrigal is a musical composition of multiple a cappella voices that sing contrasting melodies... that's what they do in every song. It''s most visible in we don't talk about Bruno, at the end when they sing together in the dining room, but they actually do it in every song... there is a principal melody and a voice that sings a different tune, like in the intro song, where Mirabel is presenting the family, and Abuela Alma is actually singing to the tune of Dos Oruguitas, the river song...
    Also, Mariano doesn't get enough props... he is a genuinely nice guy, gets rejected and punched in the nose by nature (twice!!), and he is still first in line, leading the whole village, to come help out the family that just publicly dunked on his poor little soul...

    Love this movie. For those who have read "One Hundred Years of Solitude," by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, this movie riffs off a lot of what happens there. The magical realism, with the candle and the house appearing out of nowhere, with no explanation--that's from the novel. The isolated village in the middle of the jungle, surrounded by mystical mountains--that's from the novel. A bizarre, dysfunctional family with lots of past generational trauma caused by political violence--that's from the novel. The idea of cycles in time, where things repeat over and over, like the kids in this family finding their magical powers year after year--that's from the novel. That incredibly beautiful scene with the yellow butterflies at the end of this movie--that's from the novel. "Encanto" is a great homage to one of the most important novels written in the 20th century. Very few people realize this.

Theories says that Mirabel's the holder of the candle (supposedly) now she handles it without even the candle, because the miracle represent their family. Mirabel didn't get a gift because she has a far greater role; she's the next matriarch, the next candle holder. And the miracle always knew she would be, that's why it didn't give her a gift... and her door came later. I think that end was illustrating that she is the new center of the miracle the same way Abuela was, it was her pain and her strength that refueled the miracle this time just was it was Abuela's pain and strength that fueled and brought it into being. So, Mirabel doesn't have a gift in the same way the others do, instead she's the new bearer of the candle and the miracle.
