The mums panda is so big because it represents how much of herself she’s had to hide her entire life. In every woman, lies at least a part of them that they’ve been taught to squash, or ignore, to be more palatable in their own culture, or in society in general. When you go through puberty, for girls, this is when you start to realise how much the odds feel stacked against you. There’s so much pressure on young girls, especially teenage girls. To look, act and behave in certain ways. The mother daughter relationships in this movie highlight how it is a perpetual cycle, but with each generation comes a harder push to be more accepting of ones self.

Yes, I had this impression because I suffered of anxiety attacks when I was in high school and it happened because I bottled up my feelings too much too.
I also think it was partially because of the incident with her mom (Mei-Mei's grandma). Like she's been told all this time that letting the panda out would be dangerous/bad, and then the one time she snaps and lashes out she ends up injuring her mother. The guilt from that definitely added to/validated the things her mom told her, which probably fuelled her to keep repressing everything because "Remember what happened last time? Stay in control if you don't want it to happen again" (this is to represent the mom's inner monologue, I doubt the grandmother would use the injury against her like that) Mei-Mei probably could have been in a similar situation if she had attacked her mom or one of her friends instead of Tyler. Of course she felt bad, but Tyler was kind of a bully and she didn't like him that much to begin with. If she had hurt those people she really cared about she probably would have shut down immediately and ended up like her mom.

That scene where Mei's mom is hiding behind the tree also happened to the director Domee Shi. In a featurette, Domee Shi said it was her first day of middle school, and she had just made a new group of friends. One of her new friends said, "Who's that lady behind the tree?" And Domee Shi looked over and saw it was her mom wearing sunglasses. 😮
"My panda, my choice" is referring to the slogan "My body, my choice" which is something used by the pro choice movement, meaning it's every woman's right to decide if they want to have an abortion. 🤚❤️
“My panda, my choice” is in close reference to “My body, my choice”, and having more autonomy over how you present yourself, particularly as a girl, where pressures are often high to be ‘proper’ all the time

I love how it talks about puberty in away and shows the mom finally breaking the cycle of being so strict and letting her daughter make her own choices at the end because it shows that she was just hurting and wished her mom would have just said she was proud/sorry for once so to actually hear her mom say that aloud her to say the same to MayMay before it was to late and didn't let the same thing happen to her I love that no one is evil in this movie just like in encanto no one was evil just scared and hurt from their past and got overprotective which can be sufficating especially for a kid or teen girl at that.
I think it's more to do with the fact that before the Panda was a blessing to protect their family and their home, but that with changing times it's no longer necessary, especially now that they're not in China anymore.
About Mei saying that after the concert they will all become women, in fact that does have an explanation. In my experience and that of many people I know, going to a concert by your favorite artist as a teenager DOES make you feel like you have more autonomy, i mean, you go to a place where there are only people with the same tastes as yours, you go with your friends and you are alone enjoying themselves (because most parents prefer to stay outside), where they play music that YOU like and obviously the boys who sing seem attractive to you... most of us have an "me" from before our first concert and a "me" after it, you feel more adult because since you could go to a concert on your own, your parents tend to give you more responsibilities and confidence.
Considering Mei age she definitely knows, cause we all get health class way before that age. I think it’s just a weird fantasy of hers 😂 cause she also imagined 4 town as merman’s haha
35:45 I think that what they were saying was: “Cleanse your heart and body / Hold on to your heart / (Let your) spirit return / Swiftly to where it belongs.” I can't find the lyrics in Cantonese - but the translation depends on the pronunciation, if it's said with the wrong kind of stress on the various words it means something else.
Turning into a red panda is such a perfect metaphor for girls going through puberty, and getting her first period. Emotions all over the place, growing hair all over, boys and fantasising about them etc etc.
30:48 Abby IS Korean. So is Tae Young from 4Town And for the record, Tyler's half-Vietnamese, half African-Canadian. I'm not sure what ethnicity Aaron Z from 4Town is specifically, but like Tyler he's also 'Blasian', that's why he's Tyler's favourite member of the group, he identifies with Aaron Z. Jury's still out as to whether or not it's admiration, hero-worship or a crush.
Lmao she cant just do what she wants, growing up in an asian household your supposed to be obedient in every way and it’s the respectful thing to do to listen and do whatever your elders ask
22:15 - if MeiMei would have honestly answered that question, the story would have taken a different turn. If her mom knew that she loves this band and it's a dream of her to go - she'd probably be permitted to go. But without knowing that MeiMei is a fan, this looks ridiculous from Mom's point of view. Her daughter wants to go to a concert, with music that she was not interested before (as far as mom knows) and it costs a lot of money. Plus I'm sure she would want an adult to chaperone 13 year old girls in a huge concert in a major city. That's another $200. And all of that because Mei wants to "broaden her music horizon"? For that money she can buy a stack of CDs and broaden horizons at home, safely.
I don't really think it would have made a difference. A likely reason that Mei-Mei lied in the first place is because something like this may have happened in the past, where her mom discounted or dismissed things that she likes because she doesn't like them herself or see them as good enough for her daughter to be interested in. And she said it herself. When Jin told her that maybe they could trust Mei-Mei to go to the concert, she said "It's them I don't trust. Look at those glittery delinquents". On top of the panda situation she just doesn't like them, thus she doesn't want to let Mei-Mei go see them.
clearly her mom knew she liked the band. How else did she buy all the 4town stuff? lol. And if meimei apparently can afford that stuff on her own, then she could afford the tickets...her mom knew. She just doesnt approve.
@@angietoonz6605 Movie clearly showed that mom never saw or heard this band before (who are they? why are they named 4 town?) - ergo, she didn't know that her daughter like it.

I dont get why everyone questions the whole name of 4-town despite their being 5 of them. Maybe 2 of them come from the same hometown and therefore there are 4 towns that they come from?
My head canon is that one of the Aaron's was a late addition to the group (I just feel like if they knew from the beginning that there would be 2 Aarons they at least would have given them stage names to help differentiate, rather than just tacking on their last initials) But I also really like this theory, and it makes sense. Very cool!

I was about two months late for this movie because I avoided it because of the thumbnail on Disney Plus of the four of them doing a dance in the street. I thought this would be cringe city and I would hate it, but the premise of her turning into a Red Panda was so intriguing to me, I decided to give it a watch. I blew me away. I was just in awe of how an animated movie could speak to me so much and....WAS SOOOOOO DAMN GOOD!! The humour, the subtle visual jokes, the story, the writing......so f*****g good! That ending kills me every time. I just love this movie. Easily one of Pixar's best.
It’s not even a debate if this is better than Encanto. It absolutely is. The animation is so awesome and unique to pixar. It’s so funny, so relatable, and does the generational trauma in a more authentic and serious way.
I enjoyed your reactions. I like that you guys were empathetic towards Mei Mei and toward girls in general with some lf your comments. I understand the person on the left as I also felt really mad about Mei Mei's mom, at least until that scene where she was crying and I realized then that it's pointing out family cycles and how they affect generations (just like Encanto). I'm not condoning the way she treated Mei Mei (stalking her and being too over the top by reading and showing her private journal & drawings for example), but it helps to understand where the behaviour comes from. I feel that being in that spiritual place and receiving compassion from someone (both her daughter and mother) allowed her to heal at least a bit of that part of her that she internalized from her own mother. Once again I really enjoyed your reactions and thanks for sharing 😁
Guys I'm so sorry for telling you this but on that drawing scene...she didn't have a crush...she...she was horny. Embarrassing anime style drawings is a way to cope with those new emotions you don't fully understand. I screamed when I saw that scene because I was SO embarrassed, I felt called out but also kinda glad someone else went through that.
I'd actually had an idea for a short story the other day where Melin uses what she's learned here in order to bring her friends to the spirit world to get their own animal connections XD It just seems like a really cute idea for a story.
It's really the metaphor of the period even if she wasn't really in it. I felt lucky to not have a mother who had this attitude when I had my first period
This movie hits so close to home for me with the overprotective /controlling mom and the generational trauma In my 20s and still living at home, so still have to have permission to go out etc. Recently got grounded from my car for a week cause I "snuck out" and gave my bio dad a ride to the ER for an infection after my mom said no cause the roads were damp
As a female, girls are so weird at this age. Idk about kids today but definitely in 2002, girls were definitely like this, including myself 😅🤦♀️ I like Ming, but she’s overbearing. I think she felt she was doing better than her mom, but as it turned out, she continued the cycle. It was heartbreaking to see how Ming would react to her mom or even in the scene when she was young and crying. You could see how much she cares about her mom and the pain it caused her knowing that she hurt her and knowing she did that to Mai. I feel terrible for Mai. Do many moments where you want to just tell her words of support and give her advice.
I can never get enough of watching this movie. It reminds me of being 14 and obsessed with the Jonas Brothers, the feeling I got when I went to my first concert after begging my mom to let me go. I get chills, so relatable 🥺 But me and my friends were never into boys from school because nobody could ever be as good as the Jonas Brothers hahaha
I’m glad y’all enjoyed this, but at the beginning when I watched it, I was of the same mind as Zuff. When the mom took Mei Mei’s drawings to that boy, it legit made me angry at her. That was a seriously awful thing to do to a teen girl, and it made me dislike the mom so much that it took the movie down for me. I felt better at the end, but…yeah. I wish the mom hadn’t been *so* over the top overbearing at the beginning.
Push comes to shove, I say I prefer Encanto just a little more. I saw this shortly after Encanto and I didn’t think this would live up to it and so glad I enjoyed it as much as I did. Definitely a worthy Disney/Pixar movie. It’s actually one of my all time favorites along with Encanto.

In a featurette, Domee Shi said it was her first day of middle school, and she had just made a new group of friends. One of her new friends said, "Who's that lady behind the tree?" And Domee Shi looked over and saw it was her mom wearing sunglasses. 😮
Reel-Time's real names are Bryce Harr, Rasmus Hojlund and Zach Braff.
Zuff please relax, the mom isn't evil dude. She's just ridiculously overprotective
Should be "SHE'S ASIAN MOM" 😂
Asian mom in a nutshell
@@fajarkurniawan9434 Asian tiger mom at that. There’s even a term 😆
Oh great, I'm not the only one. He's really overreacting. Its weird.
@taylor lyn yeah i like him but he does and does weird stuff out of nowhere 😭
Billie and Phineas wrote all the songs for 4town, and basically the movie is a metaphor for puberty
Yes, in particular the period what is a taboo subject now
"My panda, my choice" is referring to the slogan "My body, my choice" which is something used by the pro choice movement, meaning it's every woman's right to decide if they want to have an abortion. 🤚❤️
1000%. It's nobody else's business.
“My panda, my choice” is in close reference to “My body, my choice”, and having more autonomy over how you present yourself, particularly as a girl, where pressures are often high to be ‘proper’ all the time
I enjoyed rob saying “I love you, girl” wayyyy too much, bahahahaha.
abby is such a highlight in this movie she’s so funny fr
do y'all ever rest lmao not that i'm complaining but wow the amount of content and work you put out is impressive!! thanks for giving this movie a shot! another coming of age film i just have to toss into the ring is "stand by me" it's absolutely one of my favorites and one i think all of you would enjoy! and may even be one that rob hasn't seen lol
Turning Red is such a relatable movie for me. Jordan Fisher is so good in 4Town person. The mom is not terrible she is just overprotective.
I think it's more to do with the fact that before the Panda was a blessing to protect their family and their home, but that with changing times it's no longer necessary, especially now that they're not in China anymore.
Clicked because I saw Rob Laughing in the thumbnail. And that bored king is life.
24:01 Because Mei can't imagine what the boys look like underneath the waist.
I can relate to that xD.
Considering Mei age she definitely knows, cause we all get health class way before that age. I think it’s just a weird fantasy of hers 😂 cause she also imagined 4 town as merman’s haha
@@larissa1770 true but the creator said Mei is actually innocent so that’s why she sees the boys as mermaids
"It's like the worst case scenario." Oh, it gets worse, trust me! 😂
30:48 Abby IS Korean.
So is Tae Young from 4Town
And for the record, Tyler's half-Vietnamese, half African-Canadian.
I'm not sure what ethnicity Aaron Z from 4Town is specifically, but like Tyler he's also 'Blasian', that's why he's Tyler's favourite member of the group, he identifies with Aaron Z. Jury's still out as to whether or not it's admiration, hero-worship or a crush.
first class experience of being a teenage girl in puberty. this was totally me.
The first thought I had when I watched it for the first time was " We can see it's made by a woman ".
@@a.g.demada5263 By women for women. But can be relatable to most.
@@GoldenWreck I'm a woman
Lmao she cant just do what she wants, growing up in an asian household your supposed to be obedient in every way and it’s the respectful thing to do to listen and do whatever your elders ask
The movie also highlights how that is wrong, which is what I like about it. But a lot of people misinterpret that message.
On top of the panda situation she just doesn't like them, thus she doesn't want to let Mei-Mei go see them.
no she wouldnt have.
clearly her mom knew she liked the band.
@@angietoonz6605 she probably got them as gifts from her friends. Also, individual bits of merch like shirts are way easier to save up for and buy than an expensive ticket with like a month's notice.
46:55 See, the word for 'four' in cantonese sounds like the word for death. So 4 is considered to be an unlucky number.......
I replayed abby socking her in the face like 3 times just because of your reactions 😂
'hablar deux fromage' nice to know rob knows how to say 'speak two cheese' in spanish and french
I am pretty sure he was quoting Dexter from "Dexter's Laboratory" by saying "Omelettes Du Fromage". 😂

@@leisa5985 he definitely was quoting that lol
12:26 “4 seasons? 4 leaf? 4 them?” 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Guys😐 my panda my choice means, my body my choice😂
I dont get why everyone questions the whole name of 4-town despite their being 5 of them. Maybe 2 of them come from the same hometown and therefore there are 4 towns that they come from?
My head canon is that one of the Aaron's was a late addition to the group (I just feel like if they knew from the beginning that there would be 2 Aarons they at least would have given them stage names to help differentiate, rather than just tacking on their last initials)
But I also really like this theory, and it makes sense. Very cool!
Omg another favourite of mine!! So happy to see y’all react to this ♥️
I personally did enjoy turning red more than encanto and yes I became a 4 town Stan after watching this lol I loved the animation style also
I could literally cry rn I was having the worst day but your vids give me so much serotonin 🥲🫶
35:27 A panda is a bear. always correcting him when its not needed lol.
I’d say this movie represents every young girl going through puberty at least in some way, I thought back to my puberty day and could relate to so many of the scenes it’s not even funny
lots of good explanation for the mom's panda already so i'll just add on why meimei draw robbaire as a merman: domee said she's so innocent; she really has no clue about what's going on down there in boys so she just draw them as mermans.
That's so cute T.T
Also pretty interesting, since I remember learning about the below-the-belt situation at school in like 5th or 6th grade. I was well aware by the time I was 13
I love Bryce's voice 🥴❤️ I loved the reaction boys🥰
Not them saying “Abby knows Korean?” as if she’s not Korean and wasn’t speaking Korean when she was introduced 😂😂
I think it was an illegal dodgeball throw because she aimed above the shoulders. I remember in school you’d be out of the game if you aimed or hit anyone above the shoulders… but maybe that was just my school lol
I watched this movie in a uni lecture and had to write an essay about it. I'm actually so surprised how much I loved doing it.
*Go watch "Soul" next!!! Such a great animation!!*
9:24 Zuff randomly breaking out into song KILLED me !! 😭😭
Love your guys’ reactions 🤣
I was about two months late for this movie because I avoided it because of the thumbnail on Disney Plus of the four of them doing a dance in the street. I thought this would be cringe city and I would hate it, but the premise of her turning into a Red Panda was so intriguing to me, I decided to give it a watch. I blew me away. I was just in awe of how an animated movie could speak to me so much and....WAS SOOOOOO DAMN GOOD!! The humour, the subtle visual jokes, the story, the writing......so f*****g good! That ending kills me every time. I just love this movie. Easily one of Pixar's best.
dude this is insane I was just thinking about y'all reacting to this movie the other day lmao
zuff breaking out in song is the funniest thing to me 😭
It’s not even a debate if this is better than Encanto.
Once again I really enjoyed your reactions and thanks for sharing 😁
aaaa I've waited so long for this 😍 I love watching it with you ❤️
Guys I'm so sorry for telling you this but on that drawing scene...she didn't have a crush...she...she was horny. Embarrassing anime style drawings is a way to cope with those new emotions you don't fully understand. I screamed when I saw that scene because I was SO embarrassed, I felt called out but also kinda glad someone else went through that.
The mermaid thing is a thing because it's the ultimate 'safe' fantasy guy. For reasons that should be obvious if you think about it for a bit.
I'd actually had an idea for a short story the other day where Melin uses what she's learned here in order to bring her friends to the spirit world to get their own animal connections XD It just seems like a really cute idea for a story.
turning red 🤝 encanto: tackling generational trauma
dude on the left is angry at the mum like an actual kiddo 😭
She was getting her period. The perod and the panda are connected.
It's really the metaphor of the period even if she wasn't really in it.
I felt lucky to not have a mother who had this attitude when I had my first period
zuff is a harrie bumping to as it was 😭
This movie hits so close to home for me with the overprotective /controlling mom and the generational trauma
In my 20s and still living at home, so still have to have permission to go out etc. Recently got grounded from my car for a week cause I "snuck out" and gave my bio dad a ride to the ER for an infection after my mom said no cause the roads were damp
As a female, girls are so weird at this age. Idk about kids today but definitely in 2002, girls were definitely like this, including myself 😅🤦♀️
I like Ming, but she’s overbearing.
Mei*
I can never get enough of watching this movie. It reminds me of being 14 and obsessed with the Jonas Brothers, the feeling I got when I went to my first concert after begging my mom to let me go. I get chills, so relatable 🥺
But me and my friends were never into boys from school because nobody could ever be as good as the Jonas Brothers hahaha
Ain’t no way I got a pad commercial just as Mei’s mom was talking about periods 😭
Undoubtedly my favorite 2022 movie since I am a Canadian 😁💕
Please react to EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE 😂
37:52 the synchronised jaw drops 😭🤣
I loved this one so much.
Yessssss!! I was waiting for this one
Just watched this movie two days ago since I had been meaning to since it came out so this reaction timing just feel right. Great movie
“You’re just liable to turn into a panda.” Yes, yes we are.
The mom is not a horrible person calm down 😂
16:22 why did bro go so damn deep 💀
Push comes to shove, I say I prefer Encanto just a little more. I saw this shortly after Encanto and I didn’t think this would live up to it and so glad I enjoyed it as much as I did. Definitely a worthy Disney/Pixar movie. It’s actually one of my all time favorites along with Encanto.
Love both movies a lot! Have you seen the behind the scenes on D+ for Turning Red? Made me enjoy the movie even more.
@@FrolleinMiez Ohh, man, I have not. I enjoyed it so much, I purchased a digital copy and I know it has the extras (that seem even longer than the movie itself) and I keep saying I'll watch it, but never get around to it. Thanks for this reminder.
