Another awesome song by Lin-Manuel Miranda from Disney's "Encanto" -- I had so much fun listening to this one for the first time, and analyzing what's happening musically! Now I can finally go watch the movie 😁 Given the response from "We Don't Talk About Bruno," I might have to start doing more Disney songs...

I'd love to see you react to the movie and the other songs. I find that the techniques and feels to each song are very vast and so impressive. Waiting on a miracle is a hidden gem of a song. And as the other comments say, more Disney and musical theatre song reactions would be awesome!
It's funny that I'm a contralto and I hated it because I always had to sing with the guys. But as I grew older I enjoyed the earthiness of my voice. Thank you Disney for realizing that not all women have those "Disney princess" voices.
I'm with you. I got to sing second tenor for honor choir, but always wanted to sing the melody. I'm happier with my voice now that I jumped from classical to jazz.

Awww I'm so happy for you to have that experience. I personally enjoy the diversity of this song because it frames femininity differently which I love! Get it.
While I took a little pride when I was sent to the male sections during musical theater, I was very insecure of how I "sounded like a boy" otherwise, most of my life I had to create a fake, forced speaking voice to sound more feminine. Nowadays I'm super thankful for my range for many reasons, and I think one reason I love Surface Pressure and Bruno so much, is it feels so nice for Disney to make songs I can easily sing along with. To feel... Recognized. I'm so happy about that.
As an older sibling, this song made me say "....Oh...."
The music is phenomenal. But the lyrics and message in this song, it might be one of the deepest songs from _any_ Disney movie.
I've heard but not confirmed that Lin wrote this song as an ode to his older sister.
Also notice, the whole song is Luisa protecting Mirabell. Even while she's being vulnerable about this pressure she's under, she's protecting her little sister.
It's confirmed. He said it was inspired by her in an interview with PBS.Org, among other places, and also added directly to her that he was sorry she had to put up with so much pressure when they were growing up.

Yeah, and every time Mirabelle looks scared or something, the video shows Luisa and the donkeys dancing and stuff. It's as if she's trying to maintain a positive environment, even though everything around them is falling apart!

Depends on what you consider deep. The part that hits me personally is (probably intentional) contradiction of "and I glow because I know what my worth is" /"I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service"

I like that they add the repeating "pressure" as a soft whisper in the background throughout this song, it gives an extra layer to it.

i was so glad they kept her voice still her voice even with singing im more of an alto and i always tried to sing like a mezzo-soprano or soprano (and failing would hurt my voice or using my nose) cause i hadn't heard how to sing alto this song is so much easier for me to sing than others idk what im saying just i figured out how my voice works cause of her and how to handle pitch better
Same. I was the only alto in our chorus and I was always relegated to harmony. Never any good parts, unfortunately. So, I really like that we are starting to see non-traditional parts (witches, britches and bitches) to give the lower female register to sing.
I'm a mezzo soprano with a decent range, and can sing along with this without too much of a problem. Not the best at being right on pitch on the lower and higher ends of my range, but been trying to get better.
I'm a low mezzo and this song feels very comfortable for my voice after the first listen (unlike the alto parts I normally sing with my choir which all seem to hover around my break... 🙄). In general I like singing along to tenors because they just seem to fit my voice type better than most female voices. My high end is crap 😆
Yes! I was very blessed to have a number of musical mentors even as early as 1st/2nd grade and before, that would take the time to break down parts. My elementary music director had us kids singing in 2 parts by the time we hit 3rd grade, band teacher would start teaching us to play instruments (and recognize which instrument to follow to pick out a S, A, T, or B part to sing. And 7th grade you'd start participating in group/ensemble/solo music competitions and recitals and band/orchestra competition. So nobody ever felt like they had to make their voice "like so-&-so's" and we all knew if you put your mind to it, ANYBODY can participate in music and it's amazing BECAUSE of that!🥰🥰🥰🥰🎵
I am a contralto. It is very difficult to find a music theater company that will let me sing in the men's chorus. I don't want a solo role (not many for contraltos anyway), I just want to sing with the men where it is not a strain on my voice. I am most comfortable in the lower tenor range - but I do recognize the a woman singing tenor sounds different than a man singing tenor. I can even sing as low as first baritone. I definitely DO NOT have a solo quality voice, but do pretty well with other singers of the same voice part. I have heard it said that the way to tell an alto from a mezzo is that when an alto's voice gets tired, they drop an octave and a mezzo goes up an octave - don't know how true that is, but I definitely drop the octave.
I just have to say, I stumbled across this video in my recommended and saw your are a bass singer in the title. But DAMN when I heard you speak for the first time my jaw dropped lmao it’s always a shock to me hearing voices like yours, I love it haha

@@dawnhutchins11 Not to take away from Peter AT ALL, he's done a fantastic job and I love hearing multiple versions of in-depth analysis of songs and think there's always room for more people doing this from different perspectives... So having said that, the great news is that Peter isn't the only one! Best one to start with if you want more of this kind of analysis, for Encanto in particular, would definitely be Howard Ho. He did an amazing job on We Don't Talk About Bruno, Surface Pressure, and Dos Orugitas with some very in-depth analysis. Can't recommend his Encanto videos enough :)
There are also some other vocal coach reactions that I found to be pretty good (though there are also a lot that don't talk too much in depth, so it's a bit of a wading through and seeing who's good sorta deal), and a few other musicians as well - I know RoomieOfficial did one that was decent, not as in depth as this but still interesting, and there was a music teacher (William Hostutler) who also did some interesting Encanto song analysis.

It’s almost impossible to separate the good from the gazillion on RUclips! I do realize that there are other excellent analyzers, and they each lend their own background, expertise, and that something extra that makes them shine. In this case, Peter Barber shines brightly. I’m in a semi-professional ensemble myself, and my ear tends to find that first alto line. However where’s a song without that bass giving it so much?! I also truly appreciate listening for the interweaving of alto and tenor lines. Music brings me such joy and I love to hear quality music being analyzed by quality musicians. Loved this reaction. It was fun to see you react to a lower female voice for a change. Also, re: contraltos, here's a fun family fact: My grandma was a true contralto (she always sang with the men in her church choir). Her daughter, my mom, has a Master's in vocal performance as a classically trained coloratura soprano. Then you get to me... a low 2nd alto quickly heading into contralto territory as I age (I was hitting - if not quite yet "singing" - low Cs in my teens). Talk about opposites! That said, it has made for some interesting duets/trios over the years...
I found this interesting because it's similar in my family. My grandmother was a soprano, mom is a mezzo, I'm a contralto, and my niece is a soprano. Same issue with the men, grandfather is a bass, my dad is a high tenor, my brother is a baritone. It's amazing how the same genes produce so much difference in voice.

I love how some of the snare sounds in the second verse/chorus is someone singing "pressure" but playing up the ss sound to make it sound like a snare.

I’ve watched dozens of reactions to this song on RUclips cuz I really like watching people hear this song for the first time but it wasn’t until this video that I realized I hadn’t been noticing the music. Most reactors including vocal coaches are focused on her voice and the message. It wasn’t until you pointed out the complexities that heard the song in it’s entirety. Like that high thing happening in the beginning. So thank you!

With that in mind, have you considered reacting to any of Jacob Collier's songs? He just does so... much... from a music theory standpoint. It really is mind blowing. One of my favorites of his is Moon River, but really, any of his songs would provide plenty of reaction material for you. Just a thought. Keep up the great work!
I was really interested in your take on this one. It stands alone outside the soundtrack very well, IMO, and it was refreshing to have a Disney song written for an alto, which almost never happens. Its very different from a standard "I want" song for this sort of film, which makes me super happy. And Luisa is a great character. Hopefully you'll get to the movie one of these days.
Well, some stuff from the 50s is deeper at least, like Cinderella. But we certainly haven't had much since then besides the occasional witch or other villain.
So I'm far from vocally trained. During grade school I would often be placed in Soprano and struggle a lot, never got to be put as Alto (plus too competitive from my personal experience), so I dropped out of it. I heard this song and watched this movie recently and Jessica Darrow's range is my sweet spot... I sing this casually with little to no cracks in my voice and it's what I wish I was able to show back then. It's really refreshing hearing an alto/lower than Alto range in Disney media of all places.
ALSO! I love how you break down these songs. You ACTUALLY pick apart everything in it whereas most others I've seen are just the musician listening to it and reacting to it for like 30 seconds before moving on. Your content isn't misleading and I love it! Keep it up 👏!

I’ve learned that there are 3 kinds of reactors when reacting to Encanto:
-Talks almost completely about the melody, background, percussion, etc: like this guy
-talks almost completely about the feelings and lyrics of the songs: like Knox Hill
-talks about a combination of the two: Roomie
I am a song writer, so it is interesting to me that you think the chorus is the 'Under the Surface' parts but I think that it is the 'Pressure like a drip, tip, grip, tick' parts. I will have to ask my mom (classically trained singer) what she thinks is the chorus.
I really like the way you analyze the song and come by it from a theatre/opera standpoint, you don't find that often in reactions. I will check out some more of your videos.
You are right. "Under the surface" parts are the verses, and "pressure like a drip" parts are the chorus. He understands theory and vocal techniques but he doesn't talk about the song the way a songwriter would (as opposed to a composer).
“Under the surface” is a pre chorus.
Like how in bridge over troubled water the pre chorus is “ I’m on you side,”or “I’ll take your part” etc
As a song writer, I'd also like to point out a little gem. She says "I'm as tough as the crust of the earth is." The crust of the earth is very fragile. Easily breakable

What I've been surprised that nobody has reacted to is the supporting vocals; particularly the "psh" to "prshr" to "pressure" in the build after the 2nd(?) verse when you paused to talk about cadences and then the "pressure pressure" in the build after ethereal breakdown. Using the word as part of the percussion and to subliminally build the message. Powerful stuff.
The percussion sound you were trying to figure out is the word PRESSURE whispered.

I love this and love her voice. Not only is it lower and has that gritty edge to it. But she has such great range as she gets higher and lighter. I love this constant change in her voice throughout the song.

I've just stumbled onto you because I've been watching Encanto reaction videos like crazy, but I'm also a huge opera fan (subscriber at Lyric Opera of Chicago, Chicago Opera Theater, and others) and I looooooove bass voices. Now I want to hear you sing 'Ha, wie will ich triumphieren' from Abduction at the Seraglio or 'Le Veau D'Or' from Faust... or my favorite which is Scarpia's Te Deum from Tosca.
She's talking about being an oldest sibling. As an older siblings with two half older who I didn't grow up with. I get what she is saying. To our family we have to be that PERFECT example. To our younger siblings we ARE the perfect example. To be perfect is impossible but you don't want to let either down. Also younger siblings watch older ones go through life without a care but in reality it's not easy. We just can't show that.
Also older siblings take care of the family at times. Just a ton of pressure.
So if you have a sibling who seems irritated or closed off from you. They love you. Just don't wanna show they are breaking. Go hug them.

I've always known my range is pretty decent, it's something I'm very proud of despite not being a trained singer (unless an echo stim that affects how i sing along to songs counts lol). But for most of my life, I've sung higher than my comfortable range (my tessitura, google is telling me) bc most popular songs/singers happen to be there. This has resulted in a very good higher register, I can sing high and sing well as long as I don't need to for too long. More recently (last year or so), I've been exploring my lower register. Singing a song an octave lower or becoming obsessed with a song by a bass (it's a fan song, but a fantastic one. Typical Me by Kroh, highly recommend)
Us altos are a little rare, and Surface Pressure is a very comfortable range for me. You were mentioning how low she sang at the beginning, and it's the nail in the coffin for me figuring out my voice type. I love the fact that I have a lower voice. I'm nonbinary and started to dislike how high my speaking voice can be, it's why i started exploring my lower register. Figuring out I'm an alto makes me feel so much better
This character is Luisa and her gift is of course super strength and this song shows all the pressure about doing all of the responsibilities that other people cant do and all of them are just too overwhelming and her being afraid that if she doesn’t have her super strength that she will be worthless or of no use, like she said at the Hercules bit.
Which makes it extra meaningful that in her song we keep see donkies because at times it seems she feels like a beast of burden so they seem to be her spirit animal
One of my favorite parts in the song is when the doors start falling in a line, and the beat of it goes along with the song, it’s amazing

I hadn't noticed the whispered pressure that hits with the main pressure and with the snare on the second verse and there a few others hidden throughout the song
my mother is a contralto (can even follow me into the 2nd octave) my dad is a baritone, and then here comes me full on bass, it's fun seeing reactions to me and my mother sometimes

This is fundamentally a pop contralto version of the ballad part of Ophelia's mad scene (Pale et Blonde) in Ambroise Thomas's Hamlet. However, you must listen to Maria Callas to hear it.

Late in commenting but I'm very jealous of women with huskier, earthier voices. I love the way they sound. All the women I've met with those voices were so nice and caring and that's usually what I associate that voice with when a woman has a voice like that.

For this PARTICULAR song when you’re analyze the message of the song rather than the individual musical parts and how they come together of it; as in analyzing what the songs’s message IS (which can obviously be more than one thing with most well-written songs) the message(s)can be especially emphasized by dynamics and even the exact same chorus line can emphasize different messages with different pauses.
I personally feel (just my opinion no one else has to agree, just something I noticed) that maybe with this particular song you should keep in mind the very beginning when she keeps insisting she’s fine, so and so’s fine, and EVERYTHING’S fine cuz why wouldn’t it be (when her eye starts twitching again)? For me it’s like that part ties back into the end of the song (it’s fine but it’s not) where the house falls on her and there’s dead silence + no movement for for 1-2 seconds before she plays it off by acting extra awesome (a bit like a cat that just fell down the stairs and had trouble even getting back up). I mean yeah, sure, the pause went with the music but specific fears of not being strong enough AND letting her family down at the beginning of the song then instead of participating in a group like she’s asked at the end, she goes off on her own, then the catsita falls on her and for the first time she doesn’t immediately lift something heavy, there’s time to worry, and when she DOES lift it it’s with legs, not her arms which would be stronger so it very much hints back to what she said at the beginning without being in-your-face obvious
