Happy to finally present my reaction and analysis for MY FAVORITE A CAPPELLA SONG OF ALL TIME! Truly, I cannot get over the sheer beauty and power in this music, and I certainly don't hesitate o get a little emotional 😭 I hope you all enjoy this as much as I do! Much love ❤
and for step 2, listen to their version of Amazing Grace (My Chains are Broken) from last year and you'll see and hear how great these 5 people truly are
Have you reacted to Voctave? I love home free and PTX but for vocal perfection Voctave takes it to a different level. I'd love to see your take on them. Take care,
Scott takes over the bass whenever Avi or Matt are singing. There is a live performance of this that you can watch and see that Scott is singing the bass. Love your reactions and analysis! 🥰
This performance was for a Christmas special. ruclips.net/video/haFHrfmfHbc/видео.html Great video quality. You can see Scott pick up the bass line behind Avi at 0:59. Yes, scott covers from bass to mid range tenor.
I'm not sure that is hard for them. Me personally, I hum way better than I sing, so it should be no problem for these amazing talents to hum better than anyone else can sing.
I went to high school with Kirstin, Mitch & Scott, but knew Mitch from choir. He has always been massively talented & is genuinely an amazing person too! I'm so happy they have had such huge success, they deserve it ❤️
It was meant to be. They’re all amazing, but I have to confess to Mitch being my favorite. I go all fan girl every video. Wish I’d kept up with my singing, it would have been an honor to sing with them.
@@PeterBarber Speaking of tears, The Lion King was a childhood favorite of mine, and I’d been a Pentaholic for quite some time when they released “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” I saw the thumbnail, title, and channel on that vid, and I instantly thought of Mitch’s part. Just briefly imagining it, I started really crying. Not just a tear or two, but streaming tears of joy and reminiscence, rolling down my face. It took me a few months to prepare myself to be able to hear the beauty I knew was coming. Even with the hype I’d built up, they surpassed my expectations, and I still got Mitch-slapped. They always seem to out-blank blank. They out-Elton Johned Elton John. They out-Daft Punk’d Daft Punk. They even out-Queened Queen. How do they consistently pay homage while paying homage, and also manage to perfect the original, and make it better while still respecting the original?
He has a deeper voice than a majority. He busts speakers at will. In my personal opinion he has a better bass voice than Home Free for example, and most others I've heard. Fantastic bass singers seem to excel in gospel music.
@@wvob6752 Everyone always compares him to the dude from Home Free, but I honestly just cannot stand to listen to them. As much as I love Pentatonix, that's how much I DON'T love Home Free. I'm not sure why, but their sound just does not do it for me at all.
Without music I wouldn't still be here. I am not a 'maker' of music, but a lover of it. I need at the very least an hour of music every day. How people make it through life without it is beyond me. Avi is a master of bass. Love them all.
What I really love is when Mitch does that countertenor and you hear Avi clearly providing a counterpoint in basso profundo. That sends chills run through me.
I LOVE that you start by referring to the singers by their names. its personal, but so respectful and you show that you know what you are talking about. Respect, dude.
Avi's tone reaches into my soul every time. I'm struck speechless. More than almost every other bass singer, no offense, he breaks my heart. He may not hit the pit viper range but he is magical.
"I'm not crying. You're crying." Peter, you give the best reactions, and are one of the only real analysts. This has always been my favorite Pentatonix cover. Now I better understand why. Thank you!
Finally! Listening to a person who feels music and understands it and can break it down on the operatic level to fill my operatic trained brain. And someone who is critical but nice! Love your reactions, cannot wait to binge watch the rest of your reactions :D
And please sing when moved, your voice is beautiful too. I personally don't find it distracting when talented reviewers hum or softly sing along at points during review when honestly moved to sing. Your raw feelings and emotions add to your reactions. Thank you for sharing your musical knowledge and teaching us more about why these songs are masterpieces.
Avi is a one of a kind bass, his lowest note is a D1 and a lot of other bass singers notes are lower than that, but avi's voice is so deep and smooth that he can make the notes above the D1 sound like they're off the piano scale, he has always been my favorite bass singer. Also watch Pentatonix Live concert of Natural Disaster and get ready to hear Avi's bass make it sound like the building is going to collapse, seriously it sounds like that.😀😂
There is a lot of value in being the "lowest possible voice" but honestly for performance purposes it is really not that important. There are very few songs that would require or even be improved by going lower than Avi can, unless it is done as an exhibition of skill. One of the things that makes me love Pentatonix is that even though all of them have the skills to dominate a song, they are almost entirely focused on the sound of the group. They give everyone a chance to shine, but they never seem to show off for its own sake, and only do so when they have a real musical reason to do it.
I didn’t know Avi went at a D1, I know he’s done F#1 as one of his lowest chest but I think his sweet spot range is like Eb2-Bb1. I agree with the take of any lower tends to be gimmicky and unnecessary. Home free and Voiceplay make it work but I think they are such different styles I don’t think it would work for Pentatonix as well
You gotta listen to their live version of Hey Mama/ Hit the road Jack. During the moment where Scott riffs Avi hit a bass note that broke the entire Sound system. Its hilarious to watch
That first wall of sound when Avi drops that first wicked bass line never fails to fill my soul. This arrangement and performances is one of the best I’ve ever heard, a capella or no a capella. It’s really something special.
go check the live version of this from their christmas show and you will see scott takes over the bass when avi does his solo, and if you listen closely here you can tell the tamber change when they switch in this video
It's one of the best arrangements of a song I've ever heard. I still think they should have gotten a Grammy for it. I love your passion (and how much you appreciate Avi) ☺️
Check out PTX “Sound of Silence” where Matt and Scott switch roles so you can truly hear their ranges. Amazing stuff! Nice critique. They sound truly wonderful live.
This was the first song, I ever heard with Pentatonix. My tattooist introduced me to them. And last year was really rough for me, not only dealing with a lot of stress at work, but my bf got a blood clut in the brain and had to stay in hospital for almost two months. The one thing that got me through this, was music. I realized that there were various reaction channels here and started listening to them. Slowly, I added Home Free and Voiceplay to my playlists, and then I found Tomi P and of course The Bass Gang. I have spent a whole year filling my life with a capella music and I love it. Music just soothes my soul in a way nothing else will.
I really enjoy watching people’s faces when they are truly immersed into and loving a piece of music, and you are no exception! Keep doing what you love.
In studio recording Avi does all base lines. But you were absolutely right that Scott takes over the base in live performances when Avi has a solo. Avi mentioned this in an interview I saw.
I think I’ve seen or heard this song 655 million times. And every time,… I get emotional. Absolutely beautiful. We are so lucky to have them in our lifetime.
I really appreciate how the music moved you. The first time I heard this...tears streaming down my face, in utter awe and captivation of how gorgeous their version and performance is in this video. I couldn't help it. So..it's warming to me to know how this piece, that Pentatonix GIFTED to us, impacted you similarly. I specifically sought out your reaction of this video for this very reason. Thank you sir. ❤
Absolutely the most beautiful and Perfectly sung song by extremely talented people! I just can't get enough of hearing this group sing this song! Every single time I hear it, I get goosebumps!! It's amazing how well they can sing together, and individually! I would LOVE to hear more from this group of singers! They are VERY special!! Just LOVE them! Amazing!! I can't say it enough! I want to hear more from this group! I really do! Why nobody has made this happen, is what has me wondering why? It's such a rare thing, to have singers with all this talent ,combined together, and be able to listen to such beautiful sounds is something I would happily pay for ! Am I the only one that wants to hear more from this group? I can't be! They are amazing! And I am addicted already! Hook me up people! I need another dose of this musical group singing together! Having withdrawals! More! More! More! Can I get another "Hallelujah"?!?!?
The live performance of Hallelujah on the PTX Christmas Special is a masterpiece..most say more powerful than the video...the sound engineers really did their job..and Scott’s bass on Avi’s solo is very evident..
Best reaction I've seen to this date!!!!! Well done! And I agree when you said 'they're just serving the music!". First time I've watched your reactions, will definitely watch more!
I love that you mentioned Avi’s upper range. Hallelujah was the first song I heard from them and I actually thought he was a baritone because of the upper range that he has. These are incredible musicians.
Hi Peter, I appreciate your perspective on this. This is one of my favorites. While I’m a bass also, I never could find ways to get anywhere close to this good. I can tell you appreciate their efforts and talents. We need more like this quality in the world .
If you watch the live version when they sing this on their Christmas special a few years back you can see Scott doing the bass....which I'm sure other comments below mention as well. You were mentioning Mitch's high register, as so many reactor do, but did you know he was teased in High School for having a high voice? Now look at him. I hope his success has humbled some of those naysayers. Thank you so much for your enthusiastic heartfelt informative reaction.
I love this song, has been my favorite for years. Pentatonix brought it to a whole new level for me. You are spot on, on your analysis. Great reaction. I would love to hear you do their version of " Dance of the sugar plum fairies" it is awesome. 😊❤️
I never get tired of hearing their version of this song. It always gives me chills, always makes me tear up. It's like audible light penetrating my body.
This is the third reaction video of you that I'm watching, and I just want to say how happy I am that I found your channel. Thanks for your great reactions. I like to represent myself as a strong, hardened and washed with all waters (as we Germans say, I hope that idiom also exists in your context or you'll understand it) male that doesn't cry. In public :) But in private: A LOT. Thank you for being so open and honest. Also, of course, great analyses of the musical aspects of everything you react to. Wow. Along with "The Charismatic Voice" (I hope you know her channel), you are the most profound, knowledgeable and professional in you commentary. So... I'm here to stay. :)
Maybe I’m just a weirdo but I’m always drawn to a bass singer in any ensemble. They’re all absolutely fantastic but Avi’s crazy low register is just....goosebumps 🙌🏼
I'm a fan of PTX, so I watched many reactions to their songs. Your analysis of their arrangement and performance (and even the video) seems to me to be the most complete, the most professional and the most profound. Thank you.
Scott takes over the bass during Avi's solo and he does it in other songs as well. A reaction would be cool, but if you at least give his cover of I Should Tell Ya Momma On You a listen you can hear his bass timbre and if you listen closely on Halleluljah you can hear the difference between him and Avi. ruclips.net/video/Px2mE7yOTew/видео.html
No, Avi doesn't do lead and bass line both. The moment that Avi starts on the lead Scott takes over the bass line and keeps it up until Kirstie takes the lead. When PTX goes into the studio, they do not add any effects that they can't duplicate live. Therefore, whether live or in the studio PTX doesn't use any electronic trickery.
That's not quite true, I think the most noticeable is the echo used in Sound of Silence and even in earlier songs like First Things First there's a bit of trucks. And obviously more often with their more recent works. Not that I think it takes away from the beauty at all of course
@@ensanesane They can use that stuff live I think. I do not think they claim that they do not use post-production or effects, they just make sure that their songs are performable live without pre-recording, so that they can actually give the performances people want. Layering Avi into two different vocal tracks singing totally different lines would make the song impossible to perform.
@@Caelinus First Things First has Scott on 2 vocal lines at once which is why they've never performed it live. Almost everything from the lucky ones album is the same, super layered. Just listen to a live performance of coffee in bed and compare to the studio version. It's basically different like standard artists performing an acoustic version of a rock song
@@ensanesane They definitely have layering, mostly from their self titled album on. Also Can’t Sleep Love is layered, that was one of the first songs I’ve heard with clear layering. Still perform it live since it’s not a ton but First things first is a big one
Peter, you have a wonderful ability to clearly break this performance down and explain technical details of the vocal color created by this very talented group. Thanks for giving great depth to this experience!
This was how I discovered PTX one night in early spring 2019...fell down the rabbit hole listening to them (and then found Ring of Fire w Home Free and Avi and that was my gateway to them a few nights later). I ended up going to see PTX w my now 14 yr old son at Madison Square Garden in May/June 2019 and by that time Avi was not with them anymore. They did sing this and the most *human* thing I remember was that Scott was off pitch for the first two measures!! Proves that they are singing live and that even tho they are technically incredible, they are not infalable.
@@PeterBarber 👉Like EVERYONE mentioned Scott takes over the bass when Avi or Matt have a singing lead Scotts vocal range is INSANE baritone, bass, falsetto, ghostly harmonies, King of riffs and runs EXTREMELY soulful! Avi and Scott are my favorites!!!💖
@@PeterBarber 🙏🙏PLEASE react to this cover *LIVE* from their Christmas Special some years back. When Avi starts singing LOOK at what Scott does!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE react to the LIVE version!!!!🙏🙏🙏
This is probably for me the most powerful and beautiful piece of music they have ever done. Music has a way of touching every single soul in a different way but it reaches people from all walks of life. I was in chorus for 12 yrs as a tenor and every year we did this piece around Christmas time everyone in the room got emotional. The arrangement adds an extra layer of perfection , and I agree that I didn't have a single critique either lol, they truly do serve the music Peter I agree. Perfecto, bellisima, grazie...
On the recorded version Avi does double track the super low very quiet notes during his solo (so they can be dropped during live versions) but the higher bass part is done by Scott throughout Avi's solo... you can tell the tonal difference between Scott & Avi's tone if you listen. In the live version Scott does it all and you tell its not as low in parts as on the track. Scott does great in covering bass line for Avi but a baritone can't get quite as low as a true bass (Scott does have amazing range). That is why it's easier with covering for Matt since Matt is a bass baritone. Avi's chocolate whiskey warm voice is very distinctive and unique. Kevin does use voice percussion during the song but the video doesn't really show it. Avi & Kevin talk about it in interview...adding little ear candy on recorded version that can be removed for live performances that really don't change the song but just make it pure perfection.
I've watched this music video so many times and love how you mention things i'd never noticed before. You have a great skill for breaking down the technical elements and making them understandable. Its the first Pentatonix song I heard and to me its perfection.
Thanks for the best review I've ever heard. Your clarity is so appreciated. You have opened my eyes to truly appreciating voices. Thank you. I will never listen without hearing again.
As a trained vocalist and musician, I so appreciate your approach. You appreciate the music with an erudition, yet also emotion. It is obvious you have excellent musical training and education, but have been able to weave that into a musicians soul. A lot of musicians have trouble synergistically marrying their technical abilities with their musicianship. So, well done. Really appreciate your videos and best wishes with your career. And yes, this performance is just shear perfection.
I heard them practice this during soundtrack and then live in concert. Seeing them perform live in person - is a total other experience and they're amazing. I've seen them live 3 times. They NEVER disappoint.
Their live performance of Silent Night is also spectacular. Performed in a church so the acoustics and natural reverb is outstanding. It sounds like angels are singing. Avi and Kirstie are the stars of that one. I'd love to see your reaction!
Scott takes over the bass line whenever Avi/Matt are singing a melody part. There is a live performance of this song and you can see Scott is singing the bass, it sounds just like this recorded version, but completely live!!
Man, this reaction is reaaally good. With the really nice analysis coming from a musician himself while still just enjoying it overall. As ive seen alot of reax from hallelujah. Keep it up man! I hope your channel keeps on growing! Kudos!
Wonderful reaction, except that, as you heard from others, Scott will sing the bass when Avi or Matt is singing a higher solo part. I can tell that it's not Avi, because it is not quite as full, but he can certainly hit those low notes. If you want a perfect example of Scott hitting very low notes, check out his solo piece "Scott Hoying I Should Tell Ya Momma On You". I'd love to see your reaction to that one.
There's a great interview of Ed Boyer who does the producing for this group. He talks about the equipment and the way he produces their work. It's truly worth checking out because it explains so much about the quality of their work
CRESCENDO IS THE WORD YOU NEEDED! Every time I hear this I burst out in tears. It cannot be helped. Beautiful piano music does it to me also. So special!

Am I the only one that wants to hear more from this group? I can't be! They are amazing! And I am addicted already! Hook me up people! I need another dose of this musical group singing together! Having withdrawals! More! More! More! Can I get another "Hallelujah"?!?!?
Avi’s voice always reminds me of a warm hug or a soft cozy blanket. It’s so comforting.
TOTALLY AGREE
"And then Avi comes in..." *man-crush on Avi moment... Hehe. I love it. I think this is my favorite reaction to this song.
The live performance of Hallelujah on the PTX Christmas Special is a masterpiece..most say more powerful than the video...the sound engineers really did their job..and Scott’s bass on Avi’s solo is very evident..
NO... lol... I'm not crying you are! Your critique makes this great grandma smile.
Avi's voice makes me melt every time.
No, I’m not crying you are! I have chills so hard my skin stings
This is one of the best reactions I’ve seen. Bravo Peter!
Your Mitch-slapped face did not disappoint! You were IN TO IT! like YA! DO IT!
I love this song, has been my favorite for years. Pentatonix brought it to a whole new level for me. You are spot on, on your analysis. Great reaction. I would love to hear you do their version of " Dance of the sugar plum fairies" it is awesome. 😊❤️
I second this suggestion. I think your analysis would bring a new light to the song.
I love that comment "Serve the Music." That describes Pentatonix so well.
I’m not crying, you’re crying… another gorgeous video Peter!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I'm singing along. Can't resist. This version is PERFECTION.
YOU WERE RIGHT, AS SOON AS AVI STARTED SINGING WITH HIS DEEP, RICH BASS VOICE, TEARS FORMED IN MY EYES.
Peter Barber.
I greatly appreciate that you share a professional insight as you react to Pentatonix Hallelujah.

Second!
Third lol
FOURTH 😁
Has it happened yet? I'm going to go look for it... But if it's not there, FIFTH, and get on it!!! It will make you smile, I promise!! :D
And a late sixth, I love seeing how much control he has.
Such a fundamental part of our beings.... best description I've never been able to verbalize about how music feels. Thank you
No, Avi doesn't do lead and bass line both.
Thanks for the story! Totally true -- even the best singers are out of tune occasionally. Part of being human, like you said :)
Thanks for your great explanation, I love Avi's voice
Critique is great. You know your music. Enjoyed it immensely. Mitch is one of the best counter tenor's I've ever heard in all my years of music.
If you haven’t seen their Christmas special to see this live, the acoustics really lets them shine! Hope ya check it out!
You are hand's down the best reactor I've ever heard! Thank you!!
Scott always covers bass whenever the bass is singing a solo (for both Avi and Matt).
I'd love to see your reaction!
on 10th of September they are releasing deluxe version of their album of originals Lucky Ones with 7 additional new originals
Scott takes over the bass line whenever Avi/Matt are singing a melody part. There is a live performance of this song and you can see Scott is singing the bass, it sounds just like this recorded version, but completely live!!
I agree 100 percent! PENTATONIX is my favorite group. They are pure magic. It's like they're voice were designed to be together. Love them so much 💗
Man, this reaction is reaaally good.
Love watching reactions to this one where people get Mitch slapped. You did not disappoint.
Peter, I totally enjoyed your analysis of the music… I could tell just how much you felt this piece and it was so beautiful to witness.
So special!
Another great song is their original, Run To You. Voices of angels that one.
Some people call the penultimate section the PTX Wall of Sound. Five voices, alone in a desert. still causing chills and goosebumps.
Such an amazing song and rendition. Truly emotional performance for sure. And I love to see a reaction video where that emotion shines thru and we can see that emotion played out on your face. Thank you so much for sharing. I'm not crying, you are!
@14:07-@14:25 Avi's progression, holy hell Batman!!!!! Stunning!
This is my favorite version of this song EVER.
Dude, you have such an awesome deep and soothing voice. I had a little too much energy but listening to you talk about music and describe it in such an interesting way, I stopped doing what I was doing. I’m going to have to check your other reaction videos.
So glad to hear that! Thanks for checking out my stuff 🙏🏼
