I feel like Luisa association with donkeys/mules is very important. They are pack animals born and raised to carry great burdens without rest. That is often their purpose and the only thing people think of them. Luisa feels the same, like her entire purpose is to be the literal pack mule for the family and the town.

      Yes, very much this.
Then when she's having her daydream moment the donkeys have unicorn horns, because in Luisa's mind nothing exists that will ever take her own burdens away, so it must be some mythological beast to give her a break.

Not only does she feel she has to handle every family "burden", but she shows through her actions throughout the song, that she must constantly anticipate threat/danger before it happens, & constantly multitask.
Love how much she loves Mirabel. Putting her glasses on her as if she's a small child. Such tenderness under a tough exterior.
Also LOVE the skydiving scene....with her sister, appearing for a moment to be weightless, & carefree, yet again so tender. Mirabel seems to make her feel so appreciated.
Never knew before this movie how much I needed to see unicorn & dancing donkees! 😆

Luisa fills a typical role in disfunctional families, that of the "caretaker". As a child Lin-Manuel Miranda was raised by his older sister because their parents weren't around. This character is based on her, and how she took on the burden of being a child rising another child, but never let it show how hard it was. For all those who were thrown by life into having to care for others and did it well despite all the pressure, this song is an emotional tribute.

So, I've watched a few different people react to this song, and something that one of them said kind of stuck with me, and they had pointed out that in the last chorus when all the boulders were falling on top of Luisa, she saw how Mirabel was getting scared, and so the colors and attitude changed from dark and sad to light and happy to try and cheer Mirabel back up and stop her from being scared.

Yeah, that is such a typical big sibling thing too. "Oh shit, I've let on that I'm hurting and made my baby sib worried for me - I've *got* to downplay this" and so she puts even more pressure on herself to overachieve. She's not just lifting the house, she's showing off by spinning it around. She's not just fighting Cerberus, she's downplaying that fear and pushes it under the surface. As if Mirabel was still a small child that she could distract into being impressed instead of worried.

and right before that, Mirabel also reaches up as if to help Luisa carry the boulders, but then flinches as more come down - she wants to help, but doesn't know how

    • @bloodybee3553
      @bloodybee3553 29 дней назад

I always cry so hard when i see Mirabel's reaction to Luisa catching the boulders. I see so many emotions in that one look: Admiration, fear, sympathy, and a terrifying realization of not only the fact that her sister isn't indestructible, but that she IS hurting. Then, right after that realization, Luisa gets crushed under the casita and Mirabel looks shocked. It's a musical sequence, so that moment doesn't show too much, but i register it as a downplayed version of Mirabel panicking and freezing up

  • @junkyred
    @junkyred 2 года назад +239

One thing, I don't know if you noticed, but as soon as she sees Mirabel becoming worried (after the house crushes her) the beat returns to it's original upbeat nature, the donkeys come in to make her laugh, and she starts dancing with a smile. As if to cover up the pain and make it seem like it's all okay again for her younger sister.
Even in her song breaking down how hard things are for her, as someone who is accustom to being relied on, it's hard for her to rely on someone else. And she returns to downplaying the struggle, like she did with the tornado. Then at the end, she holds the house up for Mirabel even though before, when it was just herself under it, it completely crushed her.
Loved the reaction! You had such good insight in breaking down the lyrics and the meaning behind the visuals that accompanied them!

I like that you pay attention and talk about the visuals as well as the lyrical content of the song. Haven't seen that many in-depth reactions on the whole thing. It's easy to mistake other reactions for that with this song purely because of its message but stuff seems to slip a lot of the time (like the "ball" she has to "run with" being the entire world), which is unfortunate to see as someone who has an easier time thinking in visuals and sounds over actual words. Really appreciate your entire take, and taking the time to rewatch the video to make sure you actually understood what you were reacting to. Having someone translate all this feelings stuff into words helps a lot with knowing how to explain my own brainworks to other people when I need to. This video was enjoyable and great help on top of it.

The donkeys have multiple meanings. They're beasts of burden, but they're also very gentle and kind creatures, to the point where they can peacefully live with almost any other kind of livestock. Luisa is strong, but she's also super kind. So the donkeys are symbolic of two aspects of her character, not just one.

This song makes me cry every single time. I've never had a song explain so plainly and beautifully the emotional and mental pressure one has (for me as the eldest in my family) to have everyone come to you with their problems but when it's all said and done, who do we go to? We are supposed to be the rock for others that we are taught to put everyone's well being before our own. I constantly feel my self worth is based on how I can constantly "prove" it to others.

First reactor I've seen bring up the line "give it your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would've pulled you under" representing how just cuz she's the strong, one no one ever questions tossing all their burdens on to her shoulders and how she might feel about it. But they do a really dark portrayal with the visuals during that line as well when she pushes cerberus, the guardian of the underworld that only she and people like hercules beat, from this bright lit above to a dark colored below with just a beam of light representing death/suicide from the pressure that a normal person would feel in the same situation.

THANK YOU for being the first person I've seen to point out the Earth's crust is fragile. It's actually the weakest part of the Earth - we just assume it to be the toughest part because it's the part we see most. Also, in mythology, Hercules did reach out to someone for help fighting Cerberus - he actually reached out for help several times in Greek mythology, but we don't remember him that way, we remember him as a one-man problem solver, which is what Luisa thinks she has to be. I love that you actually considered the visuals and the implications of them, because when you put it together you can see how clear a picture of the character this one song can give.
The fact that so many kids want Luisa toys that stores are running out says a lot about how much kids pick up, though. They know she's dealing with a lot and trying her best and they love her, and in it's own way I think it's very sweet how kids express kindness and empathy even when they're not understanding the full context of what's going on.

Also emphasized with how she is hanging off of a cliff, seeing if she "hang on a little longer". What if she can't? What will she be if she falls off while hanging on? The thing I love and I really hope it's true, is I heard that Lin Manuel Miranda argued and fought with Disney reps to have Luisa actually look buff and muscular when they wanted her to be the typical Disney 'princess', thin and delicate looking and pretty but still being super strong. I love the interruption at the beginning when Mirabel was asking if she was okay, and could tell Luisa wasn't. I like it because people carefully construct an image of themselves either through insecurity or expectation, and often times it will be a combination of both. By not allowing Mirabel to finish her sentence, it was like she was trying to stop anyone from seeing her for who she was, and trying to stop the thought process before she herself went down the rabbit hole and showed a moment of weakness. The attempt was then followed by all of the things she knows she has to be. It's a trick often used to try and trick ourselves into believing the constructed lie about ourselves so we're not exposed to pain... It's most often seen in people that are self proclaimed assholes cause you can tell that it is their attempt to keep themselves from getting hurt by caring or having expectations. Often times we only half believe the lie about ourselves, which you can see is Luisa's problem, because she is repeating these expectations of herself for herself as much as she is for Mirabel... As often happens though, we end up at war with ourselves, since we can only half convince ourselves of the lies we tell everyone else. She is saying these things out loud because Mirabel happens to be standing right there, but it is a great look into how she treats and talks to herself on a regular basis in order to keep from having moments of weakness that make her cry.

I'm glad you mentioned that line because when I sing this song to myself (which is a lot!) my face always wants to say "a strong wind blows" because it's a literal tornado that we see on the screen lol, but then you think about the dominoes and how all it takes is a light wind for them to all go down and that's her. She's the dominoes :'-(

What you said around 8:20 about the rest of the family not even thinking about what Luisa can and can't handle is also reflected in the line about the iceberg.
"The ship doesn't swerve as it heard how big the iceberg is"
They don't even stop to ask, stop to see if she can do it, don't try to mitigate things, they just plow on ahead into potential disaster relying solely on Luisa to save them from it.
"Oh, look, certain doom is head."
"That's fine Luisa will handle it."
Even during the opening song "The Amazing Madrigals" as soon as Luisa is finished moving a bridge she is immediately called away to do something else. She doesn't get any breaks.
She's asked to round up donkeys even though she has a cousin with a brand new magic power to talk to animals who can just call the donkeys back home.

I feel like when she sings the line "give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would have pulled you under" it is less an "walk a mile in my shoes" or a request to be more considerate of her Feelings, but rather Louisa slipping back into her role as older sister. I feel like she is trying to comfort her little sister by saying"Dont you worry about that, I've got it. You needn't burden yourself with this. This is my job." I may be drawing from personal experience here, but it feels like she doesn't want Maribel thinking too hard about all the things she has to shoulder, so she doesn’t feel bad about herself. It's just another way of protecting her sister while neglecting her own Feelings and needs.

To your point of how the Earth can be fragile in some places, the way earthquakes happen is when enough pressure is formed between two tectonic plates (pieces of the outer crust of the Earth) they either collapse inwards on each other or get pulled apart. When collapsed inward on each other it’s not as bad, but if it goes long enough they might be ripped apart causing horrible permanent damage. I love the message that, even though she is incredibly strong in whatever comes at her, everything that piles on starts to affect her but she’s not letting it, so she’s starting to break apart because she refuses to collapse, not realizing the damage done will be worse

I love the visual at the start, when Luisa rips up the ground and everything goes red. The stones that go flying look suspiciously like red blood cells. It's a short scene, but it's really powerful.
And then, of course, the red theme comes back after the bridge and we go deep again.

I know all of this was trendy a year ago but I only saw Encanto a few days ago 😅
Something I realised about the Titanic metaphor is that it's the ship that at the time was called 'indestructible' and 'unsinkable' and therefore we don't need to be vigilant in looking out for problems. They think of Luisa the exact same way so there's no need to *easily* avoid any problems because she can handle it all. The family sees the iceberg but doesn't swerve.

But it needs to be said anyways, you are very insightful, you look at the lyrics AND the visuals, and you noticed the little things (like how in Don't Talk about Bruno the door was flickering and Luisa wasn't strong so here she was hiding that something was wrong). And I didn't realize that she was literally shouldering the beasts of burdens that should have been carrying the weight but weren't. I enjoyed your video, keep up the great work!

I love how much detail and depth you go into. I’ve seen different reactors touch on a lot of what you’re saying, but nobody caught as much as you did
One of the things that I find really interesting about this song is the fact that within a few lines/lyrics we go from “and I glow because I know what my worth is” to “ I’m pretty sure I’m worthless, if I can’t be of service“
Her worth/identity has only been tied to her powers.
When they start to fail, she doesn’t know what to do with herself. But also when they start to fail, Abuela tells Mirabel to leave her alone, doesn’t actually support/help Louisa and doesn’t indicate she has any intention of send either Julieta or Augustine to comfort their daughter Just goes to deal with Isabella‘s betrothal.

I'm not yet sure I want to watch the movie. I feel a little - wait for it: pressured - by how every reactor I watch is doing the same songs all over. But I usually end up watching Disney anyway, so... Let's see when ;-)
Love this song SO MUCH. And also the graphics that go along. Man, that last segment after she's talking about being happy and light - that pain and misery on her face. Awww. Never been "the strong one" in the sense of the movie (although the eldest) so I can only relate intellectually, but that's what Disney really does well: it kicks you in the nuts and then re-builds your faith in Happy Endings. So. Let's see if I'll cave and watch this ;-)

You're the first person apart from myself to notice the significance of the donkeys, and that they aren't just there for comic relief purposes - The fact that they're for carrying loads but are carrying nothing while Luisa's doing everything AND carrying them too (i.e. taking on unnecessary loads), and then when the scene changes, you see a donkey carrying HER. The problem, kind of, is that the donkeys having unicorn horns and pink glitter on them distracts the audience from this very important switch, although it could well be a way of showing us a bit more of who Luisa is: She's girly, she wears feminine clothes and likes unicorns and pink glitter, she just has a traditionally masculine power.

I wish other reactors would do that. Honestly, sometimes I find it a little annoying how they'll play a little bit of the song, pause it and comment on it, play more of it, then pause it and comment on it again, and it's only been like a few seconds.
In some reactions I've seen, from the start, I think they keep pausing after like every other line, or every three lines.
