    Luisa’s whole look was designed by Lin. He fought for the character to have muscles and be more masculine. She was originally supposed to be your typical Disney female character. You should also check out some of Jessica Darrow’s other stuff. She does a few Amy Winehouse covers that are absolutely fabulous.

    Fun Fact! Lin said in an interview that this song is a love letter to her older sister. Because he is "the baby of the family" he didn't know a lot of what was going on and this was a way to apologize to her for making it harder for her and also thank her.
    The interview is super sweet and gives a lot of context about every song.

    Towards the end, Luisa singing "who am I if I don't have what it takes," a very morbid thing to hear come out of someone's mouth, while dancing with a big smile kind of feels like it's meant to symbolize how she's putting on a show in the story.

    • @RaptorNX01
      @RaptorNX01 2 года назад +13

      it is. the entire end section with the dancing donkeys is after louisa saw how horrified Maribel looked after the section right before when Louisa showed the real pain and fear she was feeling. she was trying to cheer her sister up. (and i suspect for the audience too, since that whole bit leading up to the house falling is actually sad and scary.)

    Something that really needs to be highlighted is how much raw emotion is put into the vocal performance for this song. It's not a constant and clear voice. You can hear the bouts of anger, the moments of struggle and self doubt that she feels to go along with what she's saying. You mention the little growl in her voice at the end and that's exactly what I'm talking about. Mad respect for such a performance.

      Well superhuman strength aside Luisa is a pretty relatable character. She loves her family and is doing everything she can to help take care of them but things keep on piling on and piling on and she is getting so overwhelmed but she doesn’t want anyone to notice she’s being overwhelmed because it would feel like she’s letting her family down. Leaving her with this unbearable “pressure” lying “under the surface”.
      Listen to some of her lyrics, she clearly has readability to older sisters being burdened with responsibility helping keep track of the younger kids-
      “Give to your sister your sister’s older! Give her all the heavy things we can’t shoulder!”
      The part where she catches that rubble right after the scene where she’s fantasizing about being able to relax and take it easy where she’s holding up this unbearably heavy object and she looks at Mirabel with a defeated expression on her face and sings “that’ll never stop.” I envy any person who can’t relate to this. Having to work so hard for so long only to look around and realize little no progress has been made and feeing like you’re never going to make it through this… it is a soul crush moment!
      Plus she’s spends every day working hard surrounded by a bunch of jackasses! 😏

      My favourite bit of animation is in that section, when Luisa sings 'would that free some room up for...joy?' One of the things I really love in this song is the drum beats during the verses with that space that almost mimics the 'pressure' repeats of the chorus. I also love the way the word 'pressure' changes as the song goes on--that 'air leak' of early in the first chorus becoming a harder, weightier sound by the end. It really adds a layer to the song; there's all that Luisa is saying and letting out and yet you can still hear the pressure building--she's telling you and that pressure/beat mix is the 'showing' you.

    A very relatable song from an even more relatable character! She loves her family and does everything she can to try and help the family but as things keep piling on and piling on and she’s becoming overwhelmed but she would never admit she was getting overwhelmed because to her that would feel like she’s letting the family down so she slaps on a smile as a disguise as the burdens continue to pile on leaving her with this massive PRESSURE hidden just UNDER THE SURFACE.
    So very relatable. The part that hit even harder for me was the part where she sings, “and it’ll never stop” in that defeated voice. I recognize that moment, the moment where I’m stuck for so long in such a crappy situation with no clear end in sight that eventually I stop waiting for it to end and think it will never end and this is my new normal. Probably one of the worst feelings in the world!
    Fortunately the “new normal” often does end eventually, you just have to HOLD ON A LITTLE LONGER.

    I love how with this song, you could do an entire video only on the way it’s sung. And yet the lyrics alone, could be it’s own video on the pressures of family expectations. And then they go together so incredibly well.

    Love your reaction! These songs really are just gorgeous. There's so much symbolism in this song, too. For example, donkeys/burros are used as pack animals, expected to carry heavy loads.

    I completely agree that Encanto is a generational movie. Kids and adults can both love it. As much as I love all the music, this and Isabela's are MY songs. As the oldest child, it's never been easy to be told I'm the prototype and that my siblings look to me to set the example. Between both songs, it's like my entire life in musical form. Who am I if I can't carry it all...if I falter? That's deep! And the Titanic reference? Wow!

    This is my favorite song from Encanto. I like the visual contrast between the first few verses and choruses, when Mirabel is mostly just freaking out about the various hazards coming at them, and the first half of the last chorus, when Mirabel is looking at Luisa as the rocks are dropping on her and she's realizing how much Luisa is suffering. I feel like the instruments are just slightly different on that chorus from the very first one, to make it sound sadder, but I can't quite pick out what the difference is.

    I think the subtle reference to Superman (when Luisa throws a rock on a geyser and then rides it up when it blows with her fist straight up) is a great touch. Mirabelle is hanging onto her neck like Lois Lane. Superman is a classic metaphor of the indestructible man of steel we all turn to for his strength.

    I know I’m late but if you notice to that every time she’s “strong” so is her voice but when she’s scared, her voice is shaken a bit. And the relaxed bit is much more relaxed…

    • @DandrebBernardes
      @DandrebBernardes 2 года назад

      Yes, and there is more pressure when she starts that pressure part for the first time (On the 1), while in the end the whispered pressure is on every second 1.
      So expressing herself and admitting the pressure has lifted some of that pressure.

    I'm an older guy and this song makes me tear up and cry every time I hear it. It always starts at the first tik tik tik and just escalates throughout the song. Something about this is just so relatable it brings out emotions I've felt my whole life. It's amazing what well written and well composed music like this can do to us. Even us "Old Guys".
    Also, new to the channel here. Your reviews of Geoff brought me here. Everything else I have seen made me stay. Keep up the wonderful videos.

    I really love this song. I think it's probably one of my favorite in this movie. Being the oldest child in my family, it really resonates with me, all the family pressure seemed to sit right on my shoulders, until I did break.

    As the youngest and finally-less-scapegoaty, trying to please a narc can become a lot like this. Even after putting your foot down and they still won't stop. It's a different sort. But the same where nothing's good enough or doesn't last long, but hurtful tactics are used. We feel ya, girl, in another way

    As a German, I also went to the German version of the song and was positively surprised. Not only by the great voice of Jennifer Kae, but also by the fact that some parts and elements of the song work even better in German, partially because the sound of our German word Druck fits the message and emotion of the song better than the sound of the word pressure.
