Never noticed before but she says a light wind blows as a tornado shows up on screen, fitting since a lot of the people who have to act and be strong either minimize their own struggles, or have them minimized by others because they're strong "You should be able to handle this, this is nothing"
Lin Manuel Miranda was the songwriter for this movie. This song in particular was sort of a love letter to his own older sister. It was basically him saying "Hey sis, I know you struggled when we were kids. You had all this pressure to be a role model, to be my protector, to be the the perfect daughter, to get through school and make the family proud with your success. I didn't understand what you were carrying back then and I'm sorry you had to carry that burden. I love you and I appreciate all that you are. "

I remember reading that and loving Lin even more than I already did. The man is a genius and always seems to find a way to make his music so relatable to everyone else. Acknowledging the struggles and stresses his sister dealt with when he was young, that's a good brother and I hope his sister loved it as much as we do.
Makes sence my sister was the queen for me, she sadly passed away last year but she tried to protect me and was there for me all the time, I have problems feeling emotions but for her I feel the saddnes of love.
If I had the choice I would taken her place any day she was pretty much a perfect human, I love you sis.
As an oldest child, I teared up the first time I heard the line "I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service." WOW. Who are you, and how did you sneak into my life?
As the "pillar of strength" of the family this song always hits me hard. Being the one that everyone else relies on and expects to handle every problem that comes our families way while maintaining a cool calm head is incredibly hard but I carry that burden. Never opening up to anyone about how much stress, worry, and pain I have to carry without complaint just keeps building and some days it feels I'll finally crack, and as much I would like to just step away from these burdens, someone must bear them.
Taking care of yourself allows you to show up even stronger for your family. You matter too 💖💪

Context: basically the whole family has a bunch of gifts *except for Mirabelle*
And because Abuela is a bit of a perfectionist, she literally makes everyone who has a gift literally be everything BUT that gift. Luisa has strength. She can do anything with that strength but she's a very sensitive soul. Luisa feels like if she cant be the one who is the strongest or keep her family safe she'll be seen as a loser by her family. When that's everything but true.
I really relate to Luisa. While I'm the youngest, I feel the need to serve everyone who I care about and keep them safe. They always tell me I dont have to, but I feel like if I dont do so they'll be hurt and it'll be on my hands.
I'm really protective of ones I care about. Go check out more of the music. You'll understand the characters struggles in this film. I cry a lot when I cant do something right. I just want everything to be perfect and safe. I shouldnt be that way but it's hard not to

I never noticed the moment where the rocks are piling on and Mirabel tries to help but is blown back by the wind of the next rock.
I have been waiting for this reaction. My kids watched Encanto on repeat until Turning Red came out and this song was easily my favorite despite the amazing music throughout the movie. The whole movie is about breaking the cycle of generational trauma, with two generations of the family using their magical gifts to try and make life easier for EVERYONE in their encanto aside from themselves. I loved your take on the video but want to point something out. While you noted that all it takes is "a light wind" to know everything down when you let the stress become too much, the imagery paints a different picture. Luisa calling it a light wind when it is actually a tornado is an illustration of how her world view has been shaped by the never-ending pressure put upon her. Also, in case you missed it, when they are on the ship, the family name, "Madrigal," is written as the name of the boat and the donkeys are playing music like the band on the Titanic. If you get the chance, please consider reacting to "What Else Can I Do." It's from the perspective of Mirabel's and Luisa's oldest sister, Isabella, who has spent her entire life under the pressure of being perfect in every way.
This song reminded me of how I was doing before my accident. Back then I was giving my 200% for everything. My hobbies, college, girlfriend, my friends and family. I was afraid of failing them, or losing my passion for certain things. Despite this I did the best I could to hold on for everyone but for me. This led me to highly overworking myself and eventually I was so tired I havent seen a car on the road when I was going for an exam...

I love how what she is describing at 5:30 is literally the entire idea behind the movie.
It took me a TON of listens to this song before I was fully able to process the emotional response it made me have. I watched a ton of reaction videos, from musical standpoints to therapist standpoints, and I feel like I've come a long way since the first time I watched the movie and tried my hardest not to break down into a sobbing mess. So, so much pressure I'd put on myself for so very long, and I am now working on enforcing my boundaries, so I"m glad I was able to learn from it. 🥰
That you are the miracle, not your gifts, is the major message of this movie. It explores intergenerational trauma, family roles that don't allow growth, and the distorted picture we have of the people we love. You really should watch this movie. I think you would love it.
You asked us to share our stories on how we relate to this song. So, here's mine. I had a rough childhood and have attempted suicide twice in my life and have a lot of suicide thoughts from time to time. My first attempt was at 11 years old and I've had depression since I was 8. Like I said, rough childhood. However, this song really hit me, not just as an older sibling, but also as the glue that kept my family together for a while and in the end, I gave in because I thought it was best for the family. With my parents always working, my mom rarely was home because she was either at work or cheating on my dad, and my dad was either at work or locked himself in his room, neglecting his family due to depression (my parents had a toxic relationship and my dad got the lower end of the stick; it made him depressed, tired, neglectful, and quiet), I was stuck raising my sister on my own. Meanwhile, due to a rough past and just wanting my mom to love me, I was doing everything I could to make her proud of me, including being the perfect strait A student who could take on hobbies and tasks that most people my age would not be able to do. I wanted to be the best, but it wasn't for me, it was for my mom (which, later, I found out that even graduating at top 1% of my highschool class and being a strait A student who spoke 4 1/2 languages at the time (7 now), and took extra classes not a part of school, wrote my own book, sang professionally on stage, and did artwork that surpassed people in my art class, also being one of the smartest in my calculus class (high school IB classes, which are all above AP level), with all of that, even though my mom bragged about me at the time, I was no more than a trophy to her and in the end, once I realized it just wasn't me, I wasn't good enough for her. During my teenage years, I sacrificed having a social life to keep up with school, I raised my sister as my own child, I listened to my parents'problems, comforted them while they cried, and had to bear my dad's weight, my mom's weight, my sister's weight, and my own problems all so that I would feel loved. I HAD to be strong because everyone else was crumbling around me. This song; this whole movie in fact, hit me hard.

I remember when I was first actually burning out at work, it took me forever to get up the courage to tell my bosses I was burning out. I was dropping things and I've always prided myself on my work quality. I knew it was slipping.
So I told them...
And they said "Hey, you're doing great!" And that was it... I'm saying I need help, and they just keep giving me more and tell me how great I am doing...
So the last couple of years have been pretty bad.
But there is a bright side... A few months ago, I was able to tell them that when I am able to retire in 9 months, I am retiring.
They are trying to get me to stay and offering me help now. But I'm done. Before I was burning out and could have used the help. Now I have burned out and I'm past needing help.
I am looking forward to retirement now. Which is great. I always wondered how I would handle retirement. Now I can't wait for it... ;-)

i was having a very dark time, everyone i live with went on vacation the person i was supposed to spend time with to keep myself well ended up just cutting me off for no real reason so i wasnt doing well . in an attempt to pull myself out of it i turned on disney+ and saw this movie and decided to watch it. when the line "im pretty sure im worthless if im not of service" broke me i sobbed for a long time had to pause the movie and take some time to collect myself

Glad you reacted to this. This feels a lot like a song for me and a few people I know. At work everyone comes to me for help, all my friends come to me with their problems, my family same thing. My whole life I've been having to carry the weight of others. I am strong enough to be able to, out of necessity. And I will admit sometimes I get so tired but I can't drop it cuz to many are counting on me.
I relate to this a lot. I have high anxiety and my sister was not a very good person. She was manipulative and toxic and caused a lot of inner fear in me. She often forced me to be the 'peacemaker' between her and my parents. So, I find this song relatable.
That's a difficult role to play in a family. I hope you have found peace now.

This is the type of song that has a MUCH heavier emotional impact on the parents than on the children. The child is all smiles, but the parent has to leave the room for a few minutes due to a made-up emergency. Then the parent watches the song later and lets the tears fall after the child has gone to bed.
I spent my childhood being told I wasn’t academic. I was led to believe my T1 diabetes was a disability. I’m now in the position to say I’ve got an MA, I’m a highly experienced mechanic and have my own RUclips channel. I have to fight depression every day, but I’ll be damned if I’ll give in.
This is how I was with my siblings. I was the oldest child. And the most damaged. But no matter what I was going through I always made sure they never felt the weight I beared. The lyrics (changing it bc I'm male) "give it to your brother your brothers older, give it to your brother it don't hurt" hits hard for me. Because I made sure to protect them from the world as much as I could and shoulder as much weight as I possibly could. Bend and buckle but never break. No mistakes. The lyrics of this song sounds literally like the story of my life with my younger siblings.
I would really recommend the artist names mothica, she has great songs for example: blue hour, everything at once, forever fifteen, vices, oh god, upside, funhouse.
I'm sure someone has mentioned this below already but the point of all the donkeys is that they are known as a beast of burden, and yet throughout the film, Luisa is the one picking them up and moving them around, picking up heavy things and moving them for people, etc. She is the beast of burden.

Love Luisa so much. I'm the most physically capable person at my house and there's always that pressure to be strong, to be capable, to handle all the problems and issues that come up and even when I'm tired and stressed and ready to lose my mind I can't do that. I've been injured and pretended I wasn't hurt to keep helping everyone else. Luisa is very much my favorite character and this is my absolute favorite song from a phenomenal movie chock full of great and meaningful songs.

This song hit hard, as the oldest who wound up being parentified due to what I now know was my Mum's mental health struggles the pressure was intense and Im now an adult who constantly tries to shoulder EVERYTHING all the time.
I feel like a lot of adulthood is overcoming the conditioning of childhood!
I am the older brother by about 10 years. Abusive Mother, Absent Father. I was the Dad. Taught him how to read, made lunch for school, changed diapers on and on..... this song destroyed me.😥Worst of all it wasn't my brother's fault.... he went on to be very successful.... I am a mess.

I love how Luisa say "a light wind blows" and we can see that it is a freaking hurricane, but of course she downplays these sorts of things.
Yeah, I'm struggling right now. A couple of Sundays ago someone backed into my car. Fortunately the damage wasn't noticeable. On Monday evening we hit a deer and we were going 45mph.The front passenger side corner was just destroyed. I mean no headlight there and the impact bent the hood. Honestly I was more upset about the poor deer than the several thousand dollars of damage to my car. My suspicion was the deers impact also broke the poor things neck. I absolutely lost my shit when I saw it twitching. Yeah, I'm a huge softie.

As an empathy I tend to take on other people's problems. I know it's a bad trait for me, but I have learnt this behaviour over a lifetime.
I've just had a thought...Coldplay - Fix You, tends to sum up this behaviour.

The hardest part of the song for me, emotionally...is the first few lines where she takes a deep breath/sighs between the lyrics. Like, yeah she's strong and brave and does all she can for her family but God, she's so ...tired.

Hey Amanda, being made to feel unworthy and useless as a child, alongwith suffering physical and sexual abuse as a child is what has led to my diagnosis of Complex PTSD in adulthood.
It is still a daily struggle at my age (58).
Everyone needs help on a daily basis. A smile, a hug, or a compliment can make an abuse victims day just that little bit better.
You can be brutal. I find helping others is like taking a paracetamol for a headache.
