I also like how Isabella interrupts her singing to *speak* this line, as she reaches out to help Mirabel up. It reminds me of the moment when Louisa adjusts Mirabel's glasses in "Surface Pressure." Up until that point, it feels like Isabella has been ignoring / oblivious to Mirabel, but instead, she's always aware of her.
And I also like how this sequence of the movie is a complete story arc of character development for *both* of them; Isabella starts to free herself from expectations of perfection, and Mirabel moves from thinking of the apology hug with her sister as an obligation to get over with to something she *wants* to do with full enthusiasm.

When Mirabel called Isabela "selfish" she was so mad and as she confesses "I never wanted to marry him! I was doing it for the family!" I immediately understood why the word "selfish" made Isabela so angry. Like she may have been alot of things but she certainly was not selfish. And it was so nice to see Mirabel helping her come out of her "perfect" false image that she was trying so hard to portray. Isabela starts off singing perfectly like a Disney princess and as she embraces her true self she starts to belt out loud deep notes in the song! I love it!!!

I also love these two lines: Isabela: "Changing minds." Mirabel: "You've changed mine."
Mirabel helped (somewhat accidentally, tbh) Isabela to embrace imperfection and not put up a facade, but she also admits that she herself had a wrong perception of Isabela and changed her mind. I love that!
And like you said, the contrast between Isabela's perfect Disney princess singing in We don't talk about Bruno and how she's singing here is also a perfect way to show the character in the music!

One of the things I love about this song is how many more plants she starts growing, and how much fun she has with them. Her gift is not being perfect. Her gift is phytokinesis, but she's never been allowed to explore what she can really do with it. It's so much fun to see her almost geeking out about plants. The whole perfection thing was imposed on her just because she is beautiful and can grow flowers, but it really never connected with her self or her actual gift.

It makes me hope they do a tv series based on Encanto because South and Central America have so many great native plants that they could use and call attention to.
Also, I live in an area where jacarandas are used as an ornamental tree and they’ve always been one of my favorite flowers, but if you mention them people usually don’t know what they are.

an interesting point about the character of Isabella, she would seem to make a pretty good mother.
in many cases, when you have the parent grow up as "the perfect one" (male or female) they would sometimes expect their kids to be just as perfect (if not more so), but here we see that she does not expect perfection from her creation, which is something parents should take heed to.

A cacti on the other hand has a more real image, we think about the thorns and it's weird shape, which is accurate to the plant.

You connecting to Isa is like me connecting to Louisa. I think that's what makes Encanto so perfect and is making everyone so emotional. If you watch a therapist react to it it helped me understand why it was making me cry. Basically each character represents a family role and you can easily identify which one you are and it creates a deeper emotional response cause you see yourself in it. I honestly feel like this is the first Disney movie that the characters feel like real people with personalities. They aren't manic pixie dream girls, insta love, or about a clear attempt to be progressive. Encanto is organic and just... no words..perfection.

Fun fact: the topiary that Isabella destroys with the vine is posed exactly how Abuela stands. Straight and tall, with her hands clasped together

Found your channel the other day with these Encanto break downs. Just wanted to say I’ve been loving them and you’re absolutely nailing it. Lin is just such a genius. He puts so many layers and thought into every inch of every song it’s just ridiculous. Also if you missed the VIVO movie soundtrack from last Fall I highly recommend you go listen to that too! Basically every song in there is incredible as well. So good

In the Spanish version of What Else Can I Do, Inspiración, Mirabel sings “Hoy tus ojos se abren
Al fin de este sueño podrás despertar
    Sabré ser original
Solo he visto tus flores brotar
Pero adoro mirarte volar”. Basically saying Isabela is waking up from a dream.

I've read a few times that the song/family member you most relate to explains your own trauma, and we witnessed it live here in your reaction. It's really interesting because I don't relate at all to Isabela, thankfully in a way, but hearing why you do makes me understand more of that perspective! And while I love Isabela as a character already, having your point of view helps me understand the different pressures the Perfect Sisters of my family might be going through.
When I first sat down to listen to Encanto before watching it, I ended up sobbing so hard at Surface Pressure. Being the eldest sister to a golden child means I had to sacrifice a lot growing up to parent him and was always berated for rocking the boat too much. My brother sent me to the hospital multiple times, yet I was always at fault for provoking him. So Luiza and Mirabel are my two most reflected characters.

The film deals with the whole extended family, including the people from the town. Abuela has been so strict and focused on how they use their special gifts that she has forgotten what the true gift is...it is every family member because they all have a role in the family to help it grow.

I watched someone else talk about this song and I quite like one of the terms he used to describe the relationship in the song. We start with a "Broken Duet" between them and by the end it transitions into a straight up duet.

This is my favorite song in Encanto. Isabella who was always under the pressure of the perfect persona, included the way she acted even to the point of always doing what she was told. In we don't talk about bruno Isabella sings her part in this Classic Disney princess sort of voice, adding to this impression. Just before this song they had gotten into an argument where Isabella claimed mirabel ruined something. Mirabel said she could still do it like she wanted. And Isabella finally yelled out (breaking her persona) that she never wanted to, and was doing it for the family, stomping her foot making the cactus. Queuing the song. It still starts a little princess-y but slightly off and progressively get's more and more into this pop-rock feel as she's breaking out of her mold and showing what she has been bottling up and it is glorious. That moment on the palm tree was a great bonding between sisters and you can FEEL it.

My favorite thing about this song is that when you get to Isabella, you kind of expect her to have this grand pop song that's sweet and cute and pretty, but I love that, instead, you get this pop rock sound that allows her to break away from what you expect from her. The music becomes more free the deeper you get into the song, just like she does. There's so much beauty in this movie and the songs alone

the movie is for all members of the family, from the youngest to the eldest. The movie wanted to tell us that a family doesn't need to be perfect. There are misunderstandings and imperfections but the way to resolve this is by opening up, listening and accepting. Of all the Disney movies, encanto is my favorite.

as an older sister and the eldest, I can relate to Isabela. Like the feeling of "this has to be perfect because I'm the eldest" every time I'm around or in front of my family. Although the pressure of expectation source is different. In Isabela's case, it was her family, mostly abuela, who expected her to be perfect. In my case, it was ME who give this pressure of expectation to myself although I know my family don't have those high expectations from me and just chilling and let me be with a little mistake. But I can't stop giving this pressure of being "perfect" in every aspect. Like, if it's not perfect, I will give up and search something else that I good at. Or I will just let it be like that but internally having this storm of feelings and thought of "why I can't do it perfectly? where did I go wrong? what was missing? other people can do it, why I always can't?" I just can't help but always expecting the worst when it comes to people's opinions (although there are times when idgaf about their opinions)

as someone who draws and shares art online; Isa’s song really hits because - people feel like they have an image they wanna keep, a facade even; and they’re afraid people won’t accept them for who they are. So when Isabela sings verses like “it’s not symmetrical or beautiful, but it’s mine” and “I’m so sick of pretty, I want something true” - she wants to be herself, and she wants herself and her powers to be appreciated even though it isn’t “perfect”. It hits because it really reflects our inner desire to have us and ourselves be appreciated and loved along with our flaws, at least this is how I’m interpreting the song. I love it either way, and this song is what solidified my love for Isabela 💜🌸

Not that Kristen Bell wasn't already extremely relatable, but you're like a relatable Kristen Bell.
I can relate to every one of your reactions as ones I've had myself, and still continue to have.
I often overthink things and find things profound that others find quaint, but I think we just are able to truly see and appreciate the many layers and layers of artistry.
Your voice is not amazing only when you sing, but when you exclaim/emote.. and you're always emoting.
The one thing I had never noticed in my first 25 or so playthroughs of this song is how the voice is thrown thematically with loosening/opening up. I love your brain!

I sort of read the little sound in the beginning as emblematic of the song meaning. It's not technically music, it sounds like a tuning or error or feedback, but it's NEAT, and cool, and interesting to use! It doesn't have to be perfect to be music.
