Airline's Most Junior Pilot = Reserve Schedule

  • Cockpit scenes filmed with approval, in partnership with Envoy Air Inc, under Part 91... As a new airline pilot, you'll likely experience some form of a "reserve schedule" right after you finish IOE. There's a LOT to cover on how reserve works, so I'll break it down into the most basic components, regardless of which airline you'll fly for!
Being "on-call" during reserve isn't always easy, especially when you're a commuter and don't live in base. You'll spend more time away from home than a normal "line schedule," and generally fly less. It's something that almost everyone experiences at multiple points throughout their career when they're a junior Captain or First Officer compared to other pilots in-base. Make sure to learn the reserve rules for each airline you'd like to apply for!

Reserve isn't the most exciting part of your career as an airline pilot... Regardless of who you'd love to fly for, you're likely to experience it for a while and it's really important that you learn the policies for each airline BEFORE you start applying. Did you know reserve rules could be so complex? What else do you want to learn about airline schedules and flying for a regional airline? Give me some video ideas in the comments below!

First of all, I want to thank American Airline/ Envoy and the Captains for allowing us fans of Swaynes and future Enovy Pilots to see what it is to be an Envoy pilot from the cockpit. Envoy, you picked the right person (Swayne) to represent your airline. He is a great motivator to future Envoy pilots and aviation enthusiast. Swayne excellent content video on what entails to be a pilot on reserve with Envoy. I look forward to seeing more Enovy videos soon. Great job to you and American Airline/Envoy.

    Great video!
It's interesting to see how it works in the US, it's a complete different system over here in Europe. Everyone holds a line from day 1 but can be assigned a standby or reserve each month regardless of seniority. Typically it's a few standbys scattered throughout the month. That's in most airlines anyway.
    Happy new year, fly safe!

Well done! It explains quite a lot. Here in Europe we usually get a normal line of flights for the following month. Issued by crewing on the 17th of the previous month. A couple of standbys scattered through and these can be called to operate whatever trip (or a ferry flight to position the airplane). Really love your videos, interesting insight on the job across the pond!

You and others like you are the reason why the flying public should recognise that flying safety and reliability is at its highest in history. You are intelligent, professional, candid and honest. No "lifestyle" bullshit from you and no attempt to either over-criticise or be naive. You tell it like it is and go with the flow, even if it is not ideal. I am sure that in a short space of time you will get your captain's epaulettes and you will thoroughly deserve them. You make very good and informative videos. Thank you.
