Hi Swayne...you are a real tribute to professional aviation. Pre-911 I was a NASA meteorologist who enjoyed the privilege of occupying the jump seat on my commercial, private and biz flights...all it took was an FAA card and as you say, the Captain's permission. For work, I spent years flying as a scientist on the NASA DC-8 in and around hurricanes (I have been inside the storm eye many times)...and spent plenty of time in the jumpseat with phenomenal NASA pilots who all had "the right stuff". But I really enjoyed my time in the jump seat of commercial airlines including a United 747 going into Kai Tak with the famous checkerboard turn. We had such an awesome exchange on the flight deck...I learned so much about aviation, navigation and aircraft systems from the pilots...while the crew finally had their opportunity to ask a degreed meteorologist all their weather-related questions! Sadly these good old days will never return but I am fortunate I had a few years to enjoy the jumpseat. You are destined for great things in the industry...keep up the awesome work!

Great vlog as always! My first jump was back in 1979 when my father worked for an airline called Braathens S.A.F.E. in Norway. I was 9, and he said to me, the golden rule of the jump seat. DO NOT SPEAK, unless spoken to. The captain was a WW2 veteran and the flight was short, only 15 mins. I was hooked! This is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! I tried to become a pilot. The Cerbral Palsy did not stop me, but my colorblindness did. So I worked as a red cap, and lots of my friends are captains now, so now I can jumpseat when I want to. It has been many types of aircraft and all seats different! How does it work in the US? In Europe you need a ticket, and I am not part of the crew. We get yellow vests. I do not think I can jump on a DHL or a UPS flight and just go. I still need a ticket. That may just be a paper slip with my name and the destination. How long until you can fly from the left seat? Have you sent your CV to the big three, or can you just move on up to AA when the need more pilots? Greetings from Norway! Be safe and fly safe. Not good with your airline at ORD.

Well done video! From 1984 until 9/11 I was able to occupy the jumpseat as an ATC under the old FAA FAM Program. We were the lowest-priority on the priority list of those qualified to occupy the seat. I have been “bumped” a fair amount of times. Nearly every trip I was able to learn something new. A few days after 9/11, The Bush administration eliminated the program as ATC’s were then considered, by them, to be a “safety risk” in the cockpit...a matter extremely insulting to ATC’s across the nation. It wasn’t until around 2010 that the Obama administration confirmed that we were trustworthy enough to be admitted back to the flight deck on a limited basis. Most of us recall the loss of one of the best training tools, especially for newer ATCs, that we could utilize. Controllers acted as additional crew members. Once, on a summer’s afternoon B732 trip, we were in such severe turbulence that both pilots were so busy trying to keep the nose pointed forward the captain told me to run the radio. Back then, most flightcrews were pleased to have that “extra set of eyeballs” in the cockpit.

American Eagle and American fly the Embraer 140, 145, 170, 175, 190, the Bombardier 700, 900, and Airbus A319 from PWM. We had them for 4 years but American and American Eagle left in the early 2000s but they ironically returned in 2015 with merger of Us Airways and American.

For those who do get to ride the cockpit jumpseat, make sure you *always* comply with 121.542, otherwise known as the "sterile cockpit" rule, which prohibits non-pertinent conversations when operating below 10,000 feet or when the aircraft is moving on the ground. The reg came about after an Eastern Airlines DC-9 crash in 1974 while on a low-viz approach to CLT. (Among the victims was Stephen Colbert's father and a brother). The crew of Delta 1141that crashed at DFW (departure without takeoff flaps set) was also cited as another example of the reg having been violated, and contributed to the accident. Most PICs will brief you to speak up if you see anything that warrants their attention, like traffic, etc. and something like that occurring below 10,000 is about the only exception to the rule.

Nicely done and it would be a great resource for new hire/Indoc class. This isn't street knowledge and an important part of the profession. I had a new hire pilot from another carrier come into the flight deck saying he was in the jumpseat.... It turned into a fun and friendly lesson after I simply couldn't resist my best "brown shoe" introduction to the concepts and history of the jumpseat. I then laughingly explained that one needs to be polite and ask permission to come aboard any captain's ship or you may find yourself walking home or to work. Be a professional and enjoy the privilege. The jumpseat is a great place to see and learn to enhance your own skills as a pilot. Don't be that guy!!!

In Europe in many airlines jumpseating even in the own airline is not allowed (taking spare seats in the cabin might be), and not at all across other airlines. And working for an airline with bases in quite a few different countries across the continent that is really hard on those that have to commute.

It was always an enjoyable experience, as an ATC employee, to be able to be in a jump seat...

My uncle works for the FAA and he sits in the jump seat and watches them in the 737

Jump seating was always a nice privilege. Had to use it all the time when commuting LAX-IAH, never minded the 767 but that 737 jump seat was uncomfortable for a 4 hr flight.
