Your Big Decision: Commuting vs. Living In-Base For Airline Pilots
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 17 май 2024
- Cockpit scenes filmed with approval, in partnership with Envoy Air Inc., under Part 91... Regardless of which airline you'd love to fly for one day, you'll be faced with the decision of whether to commute or live in-base as an airline pilot. When you commute, you can live almost anywhere in the world, but have to allow yourself enough time and flight options to make it to your crew base before the start of your trip. Living in-base is ideal for most pilots but can result in extremely high living costs in large cities across the country. Here are some of the pros and cons you should know to make the most informed decision possible.

Thanks for watching guys! This decision is really complicated, so I hope you learned the basics of what you need to know. What else do you want to learn about becoming an airline pilot?
Great videos Swayne. Thank you for sharing.
What do you do in the cockpit during long flights?
I’d love to see just some videos of flights, with ATC audio also. Keep up the good work!
Also, with experience, do you start flying bigger planes after more experience?
hey Swayne, id love to fly for envoy or american one day, is it possible for me to fly in one of these carriers even though im not an american citizen? keeping in mind i have my FAA license
A video based on what you wish you would have known before joining the regionals
The recruiters at envoy have been told by many of your fans about how helpful your videos are in demystifying a pilots life at envoy
That's great! Glad it's helping people
@@SwayneMartinPilot since joining Envoy I've commented a few times that you are doing your company a great service and I'm certain those above have taken notice--great job brother!
A five hour commute so that you can live in GFK? Wow, I'm still tying to comprehend that. Your videos are top notch. Thanks!
A 777 pilot here ,ORD-HKG. Keep going young man, I'm going to subscribe to your channel and watch your progress.Good luck, don't look back >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
What airline? Cathay or United? I'm right by ORD
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video
U.S.A. What airline and you out of ORD I’m trying to work for United.
Cept he barely knows himself.
He’s an impressive young man isn’t he.
You're gonna be carded until you're 50! Great video btw!
Glad you liked it! I guess that's not such a bad thing :)
Everyone calls me a 12 year old but I’m 19 and on my way to being in swaynes position. I hate it now but I will be happy to be baby faced in a few short decades!
make up. Eye liner and lip gloss.
I have been a commuter for most of my career. One of the considerations to keep in mind when deciding to move to base is the stability of the base. I have seen bases upsize and downsize, or even close completely. I have friends with Delta who moved to the Cincinnati area many years ago when it was a major hub, only to later be kicked out of the base when it downsized significantly. There are many Delta pilots who lived in the DFW area who either had to move or became commuters when Delta's major DFW hub was shut down. There are a few places where you can be relatively secure, ORD for United for example. But as unstable as mainline bases are, regional bases can be even worse. I have a friend from my first airline who had five bases close on hime at our first airline. We used to joke that he should bid for the small base where our company had its HQ because they would never close that, they had been there for decades. So ultimately he and his wife made the decision to move there. Four months after they moved, the company closed the base and decided to move the company HQ to another state.
Good video. Glad to see Envoy being supportive. Commuting sucks, but sometimes it's a necessary evil. You did a good job laying out some of the pros and cons. I'm a commuter too, but my advice is to others is to live in base if you can. It's a totally different job when you can drive to work.
C.W. Lemoine oh look another douche lmao you guys are so geigh
Very well made video , I'm a 35 year major airline captain and can say the information presented in this video is spot on.
Thanks Rene! I spend a lot of time trying to make things accurate without adding any "spin" to it... Glad you noticed that!
Another excellent video about what it's like being an airline pilot. Thanks for the professional video and your broadcasting is spot on !!!
Thanks Bob!
Nice car upgrade compared to that one you were using in Hawai😂😂😂😂😂
Don't hate on Bullseye - That car is legendary! ;)
Lol, I watched the videos in that order and had the exact thought.
Such an incredible guy, so focused and accomplished. Well-deserved success. Thanks for continuing to share your journey.
.
Thats a pretty typical island car We had them in guam... okinawa...philippines Beaters ✌🏻
Very nice video; I've never seen your stuff before, but your content is very high quality.
I'm a current Airbus Captain and have been at my airline 28 years, 18 of them commuting.
Commuting is a complete and total grind and doesn't get better as you get older (though hopefully your trips will). There's reasons to do it (mine involved taking care of my Mom) and sometimes it's just the price of doing business, but I am so happy to drive to work now.
BTW I am very impressed with the Envoy commuting arrangements, particularly the hotels. That's huge and pretty uncommon, certainly among the majors.
I wish you the best and hope you have a great career! Fly safe!
Yay! You’re back! The footage was awesome along with your narration!
You're truly a wealth-of-knowledge! Thank you for sharing the details.
Such a well-planned and professionally executed video. You're a true pro. Thank you for all of your time and effort: I learn a lot from each post and enjoy each and every one!
I love your videos keep them coming! You’re my motivation to become a pilot
Great video, man! It was short and very informative. Also brought back some memories as I was on the 145 with Eagle in ORD for a few months. Glad to see Envoy is much better than it use to be. Keep them coming man.
I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for posting and providing such detailed explanations of what life as a young pilot is like!
Thanks Swayne. Everything I needed to know you are covering
Another Great Video! Thanks Swayne. Appreciate you.
Stay safe on those winter commutes! Luckily spring is right around the corner :) Thanks for the video, as always!!
Awesome video great information, thanks for the work put into all your videos! Just got into the cadet program so will be making these decisions soon!
Would love to see \ learn more about commuting on cargo carriers. Great vid. Thanks Swayne.
Really enjoy these! Appreciate the education for sure
I always enjoy your videos man so informative
Your videos really are an inspiration. Thanks for going through the effort you do to share with us
love your enthusiasm, and the fact you live in ND lol! Keep up the great work!
You are one of the reasons I want to fly for airlines, very good video
Love your channel. Very impressed with your professionalism. Bright horizon for you.
Thank you for the video! Just subscribed. It's awesome to see how pilots live their life. Especially for people like me who wish to be a pilot but took another career path. Thank you again.
You’ve done it again!
Great Video 👍🏾
Loved it. Thank you very much Swayne!
Great video Swayne, it sounds very complicated. Thanks, Evoys for the video and your Capts
You really know your stuff. Videos are very informative thank you. Keep up the good work.
Add to the perfect commute: staying in the same timezone.
Great job, Swayne! Your videos address a lot of questions that future airline pilots will have. Flight school can’t provide all the preparation needed to understand what it will be like to hold that first job!
These videos are so useful! Love the channel!
Appreciate it! Glad they're helping out
@@SwayneMartinPilot woah thanks for replying!!!! :)
My dream to be a pilot never disappear from my mind✈😗
Nice video. How close are you to being able to transition to a larger aircraft or the left seat on the current plane? Thanks!
Love your videos! Keep up the great work!
Great video. Well put together, joy to watch.
Never heard about this in many other aviation vids around YT. Nice vid.
I find your videos very informative even though I am not a pilot. Thanks for posting these.
Love you’re videos! Packed with great information. Wish I had not chickened out on going to flight school ATP. At the time the $$$ scared me off. Now life has happened. I will eventually get my private.
In the meantime I’ll watch you’re success!
Awesome video Swayne! You're really bringing a great perspective to anyone considering flying for a career. Being able to see and understand what it all entails is important and you're showing it to your viewers. Thank you and Envoy!!
Thanks Kevin! That's the whole goal - Want people to know more than I did about this career. No one wants to walk into a job completely in the dark!
That shot flying over Chicago toward Lake Michigan was sweet! Also the shot at the end after departure from the airport.
I think I can speak for everyone when I say we need more of these videos, these once a month posts are killing us
Swayne love the transition into true 121 Airline flying! These videos are so cool at detailing the ins and outs of airline life. As a pretty new flight attendant a lot of this is so relatable! Have you ever thought about expanding the channel to include a perspective of the same topics (IOE, Seniority, Base, CQ/Recurrent, etc) from Flight Attendants either at Envoy or elsewhere? I know a lot of FAs who watch your videos would love that!
Thank you for showing me what it’s like working with Envoy! I’m looking forward to becoming a pilot! Hope one day we can fly together!
Very interesting video, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the tips to help me in future when I become a pilot. :)
I lived in Grand Forks for three years...surprisingly don’t miss it.
My fav channel, love your videos and to watch you grow and succeed.
Great video and very informative. I love the professional quality of all your videos. Thanks for discussing so many practical issues with being an airline pilot.
Thanks Michael!
I really love your videos dude! So up close to the aircraft with awesome news. Great inspiration to my own channel :)
Another great video, as always!
Awesome job Swayne
Outstanding info! You have addressed some concerns of mine.
Great informative videos Swayne thank you !
Awesome video, Swayne!
Awesome video as always, Swayne!🙌
Hey man, great video as always! Could you do a gear bag video. A review of your setup of both your flight bag and suitcase. Would be much appreciated. Keep up the awesome work!
Planning on it!
Swayne Martin Sweet!!
Super video, giving the un-biased facts!
Liked it. Great Job Man!
Love the videos
Mate, I’m a private pilot getting my instrument rating and commercial atm. Great insight into the choices Ahead. Thank you!
That's some good advice, thank you..
I love your videos. Seems like you’ve become quite a superstar at this point ;-).
Fantastic videos man!
Hey mate. This content is very cool. Good to see you a young bloke dominating what he loves doing. Top work bloke. Regards, Australia.
Great video again, Swayne! It was great meeting you after that ORD-DFW flight on the 787.
Thanks Nicholas! Great to meet you too man. Good luck picking out flight schools!
Amaizing video man!!
Awesome video, I always feel inspired when I watch you. Btw, I was wondering what car you drive and if you have ever not been able to get on a flight from Fargo-Chicago due to a full flight and a taken jump seat.
Your videos help a lot man! Especially since Envoy is the company I will most likely work for!
That's awesome!
Always enjoy it. Good work.
You're very knowledgeable about your industry and seem to enjoy what you do for now as you gain experience and seniority.
Hi Swayne - May I ask what software you use to edit your videos, specifically to put titles, captions? You do a good job. Continued success and fly safe.
great job ..I really appricate all the info ...
swayne, you inspire me on a daily basis and you make me want to be a pilot
You ARE a professional pilot. Best wishes in your career. From all the negative things I heard about commuter airlines, I would feel safe knowing you are in the cockpit. May all your commuting flights be "on time". And the right turn out of ORD was awesome!
Thanks for sharing 🙏 sure is different driving up north than beautiful Hawaii 👍🤠
Swayne...always informative, relevant and welcomed. Clear Skies...
Commuting + busy work load + top notch editing = barley enough time for Personal Life. Thanks for all you do and all you have posted
This guy always answers my exact questions! He's what your looking for if your considering aviation as your profession!
Great video man! Thanks for keeping things real and showing how things really are. I see all these fake ass people on Instagram showing their "perfect" life or career and portraying false realities. The truth is that we know that all careers have their awesome, and not so awesome things. Coming from a family of pilots I know how rewarding/great flying can be, and also the not so great things, so good job, these videos really help future aviators, keep it up!
aww darn! I haven't flown with you before I quit being an FA to become a pilot! Great video!
Swayne your videos are cool and inspire our youth to dream about going into your vocation...and Lord knows they need to dream.
Thanks, Swayne. I hope you don't have to taxi as much as I've had to the last few times I've been through O'Hare!
Thanks for making this video man it was very informative! I live in NH so not many regional bases near me. Ive been checking out express jet and republic and those pretty much require me to commute.
Awesome! Glad it helped
Fellow Fargo, ND resident hearts your videos and makes me wanna become a pilot!!!
Great video, commuting is really frowned upon these days especially after Buffalo. The FAA should introduce FTL limits for commuters with this in mind e.g. crews can only commute if the duty is achievable if they were rostered by the Airline and rest periods again the same.
Congrats on 100k bro
Well done presentation Swayne.
SMF-LAX commuter, save me a seat! Jb
Thanks for sharing! I can't wait to fly for airlines.
Really?
I want to be a pilot when I grow up
@@xepic_c7901 You're so cute.
Thx
Swayne another great video! I noticed in this video you illustrate a flight to EVV. I am a BGI Instructor at the EVV, FBO and was wondering if you fly to EVV?
Great video I wish you posted more often
I'm not even a pilot nor do I plan to be one, but I watch every single video you put out. Idk why but I love them! Wish you nothing but success in your career! Hopefully I'll get to fly on a plane flown by you one day!
I don't know how you all do it commuting every week but I couldn't do it myself. Great video!
Hi Swayne, New subscriber here and loving your content! Just flew Envoy a few weeks ago as my home airport is CID! (not in aviation, just super interested in it) How many years have you been flying and how old are you/how old were you when you started? Love the content and feel good seeing content from an Envoy pilot
When I grow UP I wanna be a pilot as well thx.for inspiring ME
Hey Swayne, first, I enjoy these quality videos you put out. Great job.
Next, I have 2 ideas for future videos.
1) A highlight and low light reel of the career. A simple things you love, and things you don’t enjoy.
2) What brought YOU into the profession. I bet I speak for a fair amount that we’d like to hear you story about your entry into the world of aviation and your journey thus far.
Keep it up
Your an inspiration. Even though I don't know you but, as a retired AF Flight Engineer, I'm proud of your accomplishments as a young man. I know you will go far in your career ! GOD Bless !
