Unlimited Flights Around The World | How 'Non-Rev' Travel Works

- Your Path to United Airlines: bit.ly/UALPilotApplication ... One of the best parts of being an airline employee is the chance to travel around the world nearly cost-free. I've flown hundreds of times using these perks, touching every continent, sometimes in first or business class! Non-revenue travel (called nonrevving) is something nearly all airline employees share, so you don't have to be flight crew like me to enjoy it. It's often called flying space-available or "SA," because space has to be available on the plane for you to get a seat. Non-rev travel has made the world a lot smaller, putting otherwise unaffordable trips within reach.

As a 32 year retired A&P from a major US carrier I can tell you that the premium non rev days are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Good luck on the other days unless you are willing to ride the first flight out in the early morning or the last flight out in the evening. FLY NAVY!!!
100% agree with trying the first flight of the day when you can!
Last flight of the days can be difficult with the rev and non rev standbys rolling over from the earlier flights (Former AM1, USN)
@@jasonmsmith733 Thanks for your service. I have made it on some late night flights but they are usually on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, forget about the weekends or days connected to it. FLY NAVY!!!
Yup. I used to bid Tues/Wed off for that reason. I used to fly from LAX to SEA almost every weekend.
I have somehow never missed a commute from PHX to SEA in almost a whole year just playing smart. Now non revving on short notice for events like weddings however....
Its crazy man. you were about 5 months ahead of me starting at a regional. I learned a lot from your videos and now I am right behind you again at United with a class date of December 6th.
Congratulations!!
I’m an FO at a regional and I’ve been watching all your old videos again to see the perspective from the other side. Fantastic job, you really are one of the best aviation influencers!
Thanks Matt!
He really does promote the job ....If you can even call it that LOL
Airlines need to drop the diversity, flight schools are producing white males because that's who is applying to be pilots. United is as woke as it can be and during covid they laid off their employees and are looking to buy electrical aircraft which are very dangerous.
I don think I could ever give up my non-rev benefits, i've seen 42 countries and counting, and flown a little over 350 flights in the last 5 years working in the airline industry, for leisure travel, let alone the travel my family and companions have been able to do. The savings is immense and its such a cool perk with our industry! Great video!
🥰
Curious. My wife is looking at working for United. Would I be able to get similar perks as her "Companion" if i fly without her? Or is it mostly just when with her?
Swayne, just wanted to take the time to tell you that, IMO, you produce some of the highest-quality RUclips videos that I have ever watched. I know you are busy at your real job (belated congrats on becoming a UA FO!), but I do hope you find the time going forward to produce add'l content for us. I've watched and re-watched your previous videos to the point that I almost have them memorized!🙂
Thank you so much! These take a ton of time to produce so I really appreciate that
My non-rev privilege's have let me see the world in ways I couldn't imagine, Venice, Tokyo, Brazil, you name it. I even went to Switzerland once to get my Mom a box of chocolates. I love my job as a baggage handler and the non-rev perks are like a whole other cake with extra icing. When I'm short on free time I like to go to Key West, Florida. It's a short flight from my station and the beach is right next to the airport. I get off the plane relax by my favorite coconut tree for a couple of hours and come back home refreshed.

Hey Swayne, I’m 13 and I want to fly at United Airlines on a 787. Your videos really inspire me and I enjoy them very much. I’ve learned a lot from you and I can’t wait to be doing what your doing. Much love💙
I appreciate your videos. I’ve been with my airline for 35 years. I’ve flown Non-Rev just about everywhere you can imagine. It used to be pretty easy to get on First class just about anywhere. Now is generally the easy time to travel prior to the holidays. Good luck with that. The load factor is above 90% everyday. The Revenue standbys are the absolute killer preventing open seats
What a clear and easy to understand explanation of the perk I used for thirty plus years as an employee at LHRCS and now as a retiree of 17 years 💗 flying United
Got my first non rev trip coming up on Friday with United, off to Jamaica!! Super excited for it! Feels great to be rewarded after the summer just gone by!
Always great to see your videos, Swayne. They are always informative and well done. I also enjoy seeing your smiling face and hearing of your accomplishments. I'm proud to be part of your RUclips family.
Fun video! I'm a student pilot in the Los Angeles area. Being in my upper 50's, ATP isn't in my future, but I love the vicarious connections through you and others. (And no regrets, I love my career! :) )
So glad you guys are still together. Awesomely inspiring. You have no idea!... Does an old man's heart good.
Even as a ground ops employee, my airline allows us to occupy open FA jump seats. It’s a life saver!
Great hearing from you! We miss your post and eagerly look forward to getting more!
Thanks for another Great Video, Swayne! Traveling is my favorite thing to do, and traveling on a plane makes it 10x better!
I always enjoy watching your videos Swayne! I'm current in my first semester at UND, came in as a commercial aviation major but switching up to engineering and I'm gonna finish the rest of my ratings after I graduate college. Your videos give fantastic information on the job and industry. Keep it up!
UND in Phoenix overcrowds the airspace.
Great vid Swayne. You've really done a great job of using your travel benefits and help explain this to all your followers. Keep up the good work.

My dads a captain at envoy and man we loved seeing your transition to united it was cool but man was it sad to see you leave envoy Your videos are awesome, Good job Swayne
Excellent content, as always. Been following you for a couple of years now, and you have been an inspiration to my own journey. You are having an impact!
That's awesome, Justin! Thank you so much
This video is perfect timing! Starting at Envoy as a ramp agent soon. Cant wait to take advantage of this great benefit!
I was ground crew for United stationed at SFO, and non revving was literally the thing I was looking forward to doing the most when I had my off days. I remember deciding to fly 13 hours to Frankfurt for a beer and 7 hours later flying back...just because I wanted to. I remember ID90'ing on BA to London just to get a flight on the Queen of the skies...also I remember doing countless trips to Hawaii....just because I could. I do have to say I had a knack for somehow always getting on a non rev flight and never missing one. The only time I didn't nonrev was to Sydney because it was my longest flight and it was my first time flying international...I paid $800 for a last minute ticket...which would have cost me $2000 as a regular joe.
Agree...just flying somewhere for no reason. Flew a number of times to Hawaii just for Dinner, then flying back NYC for a slice of Pizza, then to DC to watch the USMC Drill Team perform at the memorial. Listing to fly to Paris, getting 1st Class....or just deciding to list for the flight at Gate B10, and going where it took me. Now I'm in the 91/135 side, so no more "free" trips for me.

I’ve been watching your videos for a while now. Your editing skills have massively improved, and it shows! Happy to see it’s going well at United!
Very informative, glad to see United permits your videos; great for employee recruitment. 😎
You explained this so well ! Thanks Swayne 💯
Great info Swayne. Thanks for sharing.
Great post my friend. I appreciate all the information you are sharing here.
This is stuff you never learn about, but always wondered. Thanks!
I'm a big fan of Flight Diary too! I don't have the same flight map you do, but it's always cool to see someone else use it :)
I recommended your channel to two young pilots whose parents are friends of mine. One of them is working Delta Connection based in New York City, the other is graduating UND.
I always enjoy watching your content Swayne!
Thanks, Josh!
Great video as per the usual Swayne! I’m so glad to see your enjoying your time with United and flying on all those flights has to be a great perk of any airline employee! Some other airline employees also get similar perks…
I still have yet to fly United but maybe someday I can try to get on a flight that you’ll be flying, you fly the B757/767s right? I’m thinking that might be fun someday, especially for me!
Amazing content! Super informative! Thanks for your effort! ✈
Having been Non-Reving for 40 yrs I can tell you things have changed a lot. Today flights are full and non reving is harder then ever. It really best to just purchase a ticket if you MUST be there
Agree.... I seen flights that are 20%+ empty all day long...and one cancelled flight means, they are now overbooked and growing.... More then a few times, I had to fly to another airport, so I can catch a flight to my destination.
I love your videos! Very informative amazing quality!!! Been watching since you flew in Hawaii
I've been stuck around the world !! Paris, Auckland, Santiago!! Public perception of non-rev travel vs reality. Orbitz and Priceline et. al. drastically changed the nature of Non-rev travel.
How so?
Cheap Ticket Offerings,Maybe..
Yey! I hope you enjoyed your trip.
Of course, think like a passenger is important. Best of luck and keep flying.
Love the videos! Can’t wait to become an airline pilot!
I love these vids keep it up!
Awesome vid as always, Swayne!
Thanks Cole!
Swayne, That you for explaining the types of non-rev flying that you can do as an employee. That is neat that you as a pilot can ride in the jump seat in the cockpit, even on other airlines with the agreements. It must be neat to compare the cabins and cockpits of the different airlines and airplanes that you get to fly on. I have had the chance to sit in the the cockpit of one of the first Untied 737 Max 8 planes when it when into service and the pilots were telling me about some of the differences in the Max Cockpit from the NG Cockpit, like the Heads-up displays. They told me that they weren’t functional yet because they hadn’t rolled out the training yet to the pilots, but that they were going to become a standard feature of them going forward. Thank you for sharing. Ken
As a retired Delta employee I appreciate my pass privileges, I have used many times and I also have had the honor of flying on United as well!
Thanks for the information! Makes me want to fly even more!
I can't tell you how nice it is to have non Rev as a privilege. (I am blessed to be a ramper) It helped me in college to fly home close to the holidays to see my folks. Helped me and my now wife go to Italy.
And when I need to get there and have to buy a seat it's nice to get at my airline 20% off a confirmed seat and if you add in 100 dollars round trip in bags it can be a savings so now when I need to go and get there and can justify a ticket I first look and see and do the math and if my airline is let's say only 100-200 bucks more I may as well book on mine and use the miles I get down the line for a huge trip which I can also get 20% off the total miles needed.
The video quality stays consistent ❤
amazing video, as always ! So informative and I love it
Thank you!!
Your videos and content are always awesome enjoy seeing the world for virtual free
Great content, impressed with your level of maturity !!.

Thanks for sharing your advice 😊
Your videos are my all time favorite
This is exhilerating to watch. Every Upload gets better and better!
Another great video. I'm a 40 year veteran of Southwest Airlines and we do not base the standby list by seniority but on a first come basis, like you describe. My dad worked for United for 50 years and like you said, they do it by seniority. There are perks to both systems, but since I am so senior, I kinda wish we would switch, haha.
Do all Southwest employees have access to ZED fare travel?
@@rickyism1576 yes we do
Thanks for making all of these im trying to figure out where to go and what to do to make it to an airline one day. I'm a still a teenager and am going to try to get my PPL in high school next year and your videos give me the hope and confidence i can do it.
That's the goal of these videos! Rooting for you :)
Wow you're a handsome pilot lol. Also, thank you so much for that inside information because I just got hired for one of the airlines as a CSA and was curious as to how these things worked.
My aunt is a retired flight attendant for United and I've gotten to be her registered friend multiple times. My favorite trip was a 3 day trip to Amsterdam. I was able to get business class round-trip from Chicago. I'm not sure if I'll do it anymore because my wife doesn't like the stress and unpredictability of being a pass rider, which is fair haha
Great information Swayne! I am at a partner flight school and am seriously considering the Aviate program. Your videos are very helpful on getting information and I love the quality of them too!
Thanks Dillon! Glad it's helping you!
Don't do aviate! We get a lot of their students because my flight school is 70% cheaper and we have quality CFI's. Those CFI's at aviate have zero care for any student and it shows.
@@IranAir12 what flight school do you recommend then?!
@@Anirbansutubeid a school with no airline partnership, offers 61 and 141 with CFI’s that have been at the school for more than 2 years. Try Arizona Flight Training Center, the owner specifically will not hire moonlighters or airline focused CFI’s and their reputation shows. Look it up.
In the old days at United some Customer Service People would cheat and let their friends and family get priority over other employees with higher seniority until the company put their standby list on smart phones so every one can see who gets priority to board the flight but I am not saying technology is 100% foolproof I am quite sure there is still cheating going on
I retired from a major airline and non-rev'd many times. I wasn't flight ops or inflight so I didn't get the ability to jumpseat. It was a blast when I was younger but as I got older and my schedule was more rigid I started to buy my flights. However I did got to Ireland, Canada, the Caribbean, Vegas, Phoenix, and California multiple times. Can't tell you how many times I got amazing first class seats but also can't tell you how many nights I spent sleeping in an airport. Great memories of my youth and will give me stories to tell for years.
I found you on Sam's profiles, you are extremely young, 25. It's probably more twisted and stressful than it looks, but I'm definitely ready to tag along. Thanks for being so open and working into a RUclips career. Cool feller.
Wow this is crazy. I just tried my first standby flight being with the United Aviate program. There I was the only Standby to Orlando yesterday and now there’s 15 others on standby. I could’ve used this video 3 hours ago lol
Great video. For grumpy old Aviators like me, the best place to travel is home. When loading up the whole tribe of hooligans, I buy regular tickets. With kids, efficient is key.
I’m at CTP training for SkyWest airlines now, and am SO excited to soon have these privileges!! Love the videos :)
Congratulations! Enjoy them!
Glad you can see the world. Like the new hair style. Big changes from your HI days. Enjoy yourselves
This is one thing I am looking forward to once I get to the airlines myself as it is arguably one of the greatest perk of any job. Though I do agree, it is something that should be saved for those trips for having fun and not when you have to get somewhere. I do have to ask, as it seems like you travel extensively outside of what you are scheduled, how do you find the balance between the two?
When i worked for Envoy as a Ramp Agent, I took a 787 from O'hare to Charlotte NC in Business Class as there was seats available! it was amazing.
Hi Swayne, I am Justin Grotte, I am a huge fan of yours and I watch your videos faithfully. My Dad works at United Airlines as an aircraft mechanic. I want to be in aviation I took the FAA first-class medical exam and I didn't pass it. It was my dream to be a pilot. We travel a lot its hard now flying stand by and all we go to is El Paso Texas and Minneapolis St Paul.
Man, I wish I had this video two months ago before I started my internship! As I write this I’m in the United Club at EWR, after non-revving from Geneva in Polaris. Each flight is a learning opportunity, and NRSA travel has been both the most amazing part of working for an airline and the most stressful/anxiety-invoking part! Love your videos as always and I hope to see you around the CPO!
Glad you got a good seat on the 767! See you in the CPO 👏🏻
Good to see you in my home city of Kyoto. Love your vids, hopefully I can become a pilot do the same you are doing one day!

I used to do airline employee travel back in the 80's - we called it Sub Load through Interline then. The biggest thing was getting back - I remember some very difficult journeys where load sheets changed at the last minute and I had to travel on other airlines to non-home ports and then make it over land to get back to work on time. Being late back from a sub load interilne trip was a huge no-no! I think on-line access will make seeing load factors in real time easier and hence offer more options than running from airline desk to airline desk to try to find someone to give you a lift! But HUGE fun always! I miss those happy carefree days (also because they were pre 9/11 jumpseat travel was pretty much an open affair).
Thank you for your videos Next year I start at the United Aviate Academy!!!
Very exciting! Congratulations!
Another great video Swayne! I hope you're enjoying the 757/67. Do you also fly the 767-400, or is that airplane kept separate from the 757/67 type-rating?
Oh for the good old days when planes weren't full. I worked PT for an AA regional partner and my home airport was SAV. Of course we were behind the mainline employees whenever listing. As a part timer, I worked a few hours 5 days a week with Monday and Tuesday off, terrible days for a short non rev trip. This is the perk for a low paying job that was kind of fun though and kept me in shape. I think I only really got one trip in the end.
I worked at twa and panam in the 80s and went to europe on many weekends ..living a grand life of living in manhattan and flying all over the world in my 20s
I'm the "registered friend" with flight benefits from my dear friend, a 25 year United employee. Boy, is it a game. In the old days with 747s there was almost always space. Now, we're lucky to get the worst seat...any seat, and we're grateful to get it!
I'm hoping to go to Buenos Aires next week!
I'm still thrilled for this benefit.
