As a therapist who has worked in clinic settings with a lot of folks with serious mental illness, it was so frustrating how little attention was paid to nutrition and exercise, particularly since we were prescribing meds with huge metabolic impact. Great, life saving meds in terms of symptom relief, but with serious side effects in terms of weight gain, insulin resistance etc. If we were really going to treat the whole person and not just the symptoms (the positive symptoms anyway), the interventions need to be holistic. Thank. you for sharing this journey, I am looking forward to seeing how things work out. Fingers crossed this works for you!
As someone who loves "conspiracy theories" I have my own theory about current events. Globalists - food chain - not only make our food unhealthy, but by removing meat they want to keep people in check, by making them sick, or feeble minded. The best example here is Jordan Peterson who started meat only diet. Same with his daughter. Both had depression and both started eating meat only, as a replacement for drugs. Funny it worked for them. And another funny thing. About 20 years ago I watched documentary where scientists said that our brain wouldn't develope without meat heavy diet. But now they want us to eat bugs. That reminds me of Yeonmi Park history. It illustrates perfectly how tyrants, be it politicians, or money hungry big corps CEOs use food to steer the masses.
Hello everyone. I am actually a guy with paranoid-schizophrenia. I am fighting it by going on keto as well! It actually helps me think through the voices I deal with and it helps me stay strong and safe.
R U Kidding Me?!!! I started this week with Nicole as well. I love her. I have been on the keto diet for a month thus far, it hasn't been as fun as I'd have liked it to have been due to getting worse before I've gotten better but I am finally feeling like myself again. Many things need to be considered along with the diet and so I am very glad to hear that you are being well taken care of by Nicole. Prayers for us girl. Love and joy to you this holiday and the happiest new year.
PCOS, HPA axis, nervous system regulation, all go hand in hand with mental health. It’s not profitable to look at the big picture. Curating your own wellness plan seems to be the route each person needs to take. The patient will be teaching the doctors from now on. These channels are a super important part of the getting well not just managed part of the puzzle.
Thank you for your openness and vulnerability, Lauren. I hope you see benefits from this trial, and I'm grateful to you for documenting and sharing your experiences.
I love that you are doing this!! I just started my own journey of keto for a neurological disease. I can't wait to see how you do. Thank you for sharing!
You're a legend Lauren! So curious about the illness and so articulate. Rob is a great man, being with you every step of the journey. I wish good health to you all :)
Hi Lauren! I'm very glad that see that you are interested in the gut brain connection. I've been using diet and healthy lifestyle (sleep hygiene, exercise, no alcohol, etc) for over a decade to manage my mental illness. I've been told by 3 specialists that I am the most functional patient with the disorder (schizoaffective depressive type) they ever seen. I have it documented by a neuropsychologist too. I never needed medication to be highly functional and I've never been hospitalized. However, Keto was not the answer for me, I cannot even last a few days. My secret lies within a whole food organic plant-based diet (lower in fat with a lot of leafy greens and raw foods). I thought people should know in case they want to try Keto and they do not succeed like a vaste majority. A whole plant-based diet is more effective and a lot easier to follow in my opinion. Good luck! :)
Also, I think that one diet might work for one person and another diet might work for another person. Everyone is different. Some people also might need medication while others do not. I don't believe that diet can replace medications in every case.
Wishing you success on this health journey, I am in the first stages of my own keto journey, trying to heal decades of chronic major depression and exhaustion…I am also doing my best to do this thoroughly, and with a detached healthy dose of skepticism (as in no fanaticism) but I am alone doing this with no support and it is really tough this way, so I search online not only for all the information but also for possible support. will follow your experience closely and root for us both 🙏🏻💚
@@kkslider5322 hi 🪷 unfortunately it was not the right route for my body…I am even hesitant to write about it because people get so polarized with these things, and/or start - trying to be helpful 🙏🏻- listing a bunch of things I already tried…I gained weight and had no positive outcomes in any way after many months of very strict keto…I am still avoiding refined carbs/sugars processed food but personally feel a lot better with a lot more greens/veggies and less meat and less fats…I will still research further and wish you health in any way 🙏🏻…I really think bodies and situations are so different there is not one way for all 🙏🏻
I will be with you thru this whole process. Hoping for you all the good you need and desire in your future. Positive thoughts and feeling to you. - Luskey
I'm struggling right now but I'm lucid enough to quasi-function in work and life. I want to say, you give me hope for the future. That it can't always be this bad. I've been watching for a little over 2 years and you've grown so much in way of handling your schizoaffective disorder. Your aura just vibrates positive throughout the bitter night of psychosis. Still so vibrant, makes me joyful for my future. (5th month of AP LAIs) Your videos carry emotions like a little train - powerful, honest and at some points raw but always addressing the much desired need for an outside aspect, view insight. Long story short, your videos and stories, lived experiences are incredibly helpful to me, sincerely thank you.
I came across your channel while researching about schizophrenia. My niece was diagnosed last month at the age of 38. Thank you for sharing your experiences. It helps me better understand what she is going through. I’m excited to follow you on your journey with a holistic approach using Keto. I believe it could be the answer for many people. Blessings 🙏
All the best to you Lauren. You and Rob making these videos that are so open and honest has been such a blessing for so many people and their friends and families. Many prayers for your success with this diet to effectively manage your schizoaffective illness. You are being a true pioneer for this therapy
Lifestyle changes require so much more commitment and so many folks are not ready, willing, or able so providers don't even suggest them. Meds are "easier" even if not the most therapeutic intervention for that person. Go you, Lauren!
Hey I have the same diagnosis. Some of your insight has helped me aware of some of my symptoms that I didn’t realize or wasn’t able to put words too. Thank you for ur courage to share your experiences and thoughts. Sending u well wishes and good vibes
This is so exciting, you have my support! You are super brave to offer yourself up in this study and I hope it only provides positive results for you and possibly those who may benefit from your experience! ❤
Hi Lauren, I’m a new subscriber. I watched several of your older videos, and now this one. You’re a remarkable woman! I wanted to say that starting a ketogenic diet puts a huge strain and stress on your body, and I know you mentioned in earlier videos that stress can be a trigger for you. I hope you’re keeping your psychiatrist in the loop, and you are continuing to take your medications as well. Wishing you good health, and I’m cheering you on ❤.
@@kimberlyf4888 I would hope so, but from what I understand, the goal, here, is to find an alternative to medication. She has said so herself, that believing her medication is poison, or that doctors are trying to poison her is her most prevalent delusion. She also said a red flag she’s slipping into psychosis is acting on this delusion and stopping her medication. I just hope that she considers that, and keeps her psychiatrist informed.
@@PlantingSeedsofTruth Yes, I suppose that there's a minuscule chance that they would never ask her about her triggers, how she's feeling, if there's any stress or psychosis happening. But, then she would have chosen a particularly bad team to help her on this journey, and she doesn't seem like the type of person who wouldn't vet her care team.
@@kimberlyf4888 oh my goodness. I wouldn’t have subscribed to her channel and commented on what a remarkable woman I think she is if I thought she was incompetent. She’s very intelligent and endearing, and I really enjoy her content. I know what I’m like if I stop taking my medication, and I watched older videos of hers talking about what happens if she stops taking her medication. My comment was made with the best of intentions. Honestly, there’s probably others watching this and thinking they should stop taking their medications and try Keto. Keto is great for weight loss, reducing inflammation, reducing fatigue, improving cognition, etc. but it is not a healthy long term solution, and it can’t replace antipsychotics. I mean, seriously!
Dear Lauren. You'll make it. I have faith in you. Well, regarding eating foods I'm reminded of an old saying: "You are what you eat." Hopefully if you read this on Christmas Day, I wish you, Rob, and your family a wonderful Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Please take care.
I'm gonna be honest, I was a bit hesitant when you announced this project at first, but the way you are approaching this seems very professional and careful and thorough. I'm curious to see where this goes, best of luck!
Hi Lauren, can relate 100 percent to your frustrations with the medical model. It falls short in so many ways. I am currently on a keto eating program. Think I'm feeling mentally more balanced, clearer thinking. Flatter stomach and a positive feeling of empowerment that I'm taking control of what I put in my body. Look forward to following you and Rob 😊x
Started Dec 18,2022 on a therapeutic ketogenic diet after reading Dr. Palmer’s Brain Energy book. It was a game changer for me. Can’t wait to follow you on your journey! There is a little time of adjustment where my symptoms and sleep got worse. After a few weeks things got so much better. Never went back and never going back.
Hi Lauren, I have a diagnosis of bi-polar 1 and I’ve been virtually symptom free for about 3 months now, 2 of which I’ve been on Keto for. It’s hard to say whether it’s the Keto diet that’s keeping me stable or if it’s my meds or my illness is just cyclical and it wouldn’t matter what meds I was taking or what diet I’m on. But I’ll say this, doing keto, while exercising regularly, this is the best I’ve felt since getting my diagnosis over 3 years ago. I finally feel almost entirely back to myself, and not to mention I’m losing a lot of the weight that I had put on due to medications, so I would say overall it’s been very positive for me. Wishing you the best of luck with, and hoping you get to see some of the benefits that I have!
I’m a big fan and applaud your positive courage and practical approach. I started a keto diet 30 days ago. In all likelihood I have type 3 diabetes (insulin resistant brain and poor energetics) because it is working! I’ve suffered from random weekly depression (lasting 1 or 2 days) since 2006. Truly awful stuff. I’ve tried everything it seems, multiple medications, counseling, vegan diet, gluten-free diet, mushrooms, TMS, CBT, DBT, etc. to no avail. This is truly the first treatment that has helped, going on 30 days! My brain can feel the vast difference and it is best when I’m in the most nutritional ketosis for the longest time. You learn stuff as you go. I’m never hungry like before so I tried going with just one meal a day. It is so good because this maximizes ketones reaching the brain for the longest period possible. On that same theme, I try to eliminate all carbs (very few plants or none). I know it works for me and my individual condition, and I hope it can work for you too!
Awesome video Lauren! This seems like an innovative and balanced approach to kicking off your project. Congrats on choosing to kick alcohol; I’ll be six years sober this January and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Looking forward to following along! 🎉✨
I am so interested to see how this goes for you. I have been a huge fan of the ketogenic diet for years due to the health benefits I notice. When I stray for too long, I really notice the negative changes. Having said that, I rarely recommend it as it is not easy to maintain longterm for many/most people, due to what people see as the restrictions. It takes discipline, and so many people that I know that have tried it and really benefited from it physically and emotionally, just couldn't stick to it. 💙
Good luck Lauren and Rob I really hope it helps I’m glad you are doing this with medical support as it can be really destabilising at first also feeling tired on keto is actually one of the main symptoms that continues to plague people much like medication side effects. I know people say they have better energy and mental clarity but that’s not actually reflected in research brain fog and fatigue are unfortunately quite common along with menstrual irregularities and hair loss these are related mainly to the low protein requirement of the medical ketogenic diet. Please look to the seizure research to see what is actually the common side effects and don’t freak out or blame yourself for not doing keto right if you are tired or destabilise or if it’s side effects are to much and the benefit of the diet is not worth it for the side effects.
I do wish you had mentioned again in this video that you are working with an entire team of professionals, as that is important for many reasons. Looking forward to seeing how this goes!
Lauren, It is amazing that you don't seem to notice How strong you are, I relate to that "oh, yeah, Just some voices in the background" ahahha. I went into keto when I was diagnoses with BPD and Bipolar in 2018, was able to manage a year and a half but Stills on medication. The whole routine If exercises, medication etc I did all that. It does help a lot but the minute I stopped taking my medication I went into Full blown mania which was terrifying. But that's my experience, I hope you do well and get good results to improve your life. Best wishes.
I just discovered your channel, and am very impressed with your whole approach and the team you've put together, and not a little bit envious. I've been doing a strict therapeutic ketogenic diet for about 18 months now for bipolar 2, and a less strict ketogenic diet for about 4 years prior. I've been able to completely get off my antipsychotics and mood stabilizers, although it's a moderately fragile situation. Other than a few on line support groups I don't have a lot of support from my therapist and psychiatrist.
Thank you for sharing your journey. Could you list the computer stand you are using at 1:16 as well as the microphone you have attached? Thanks again! Love your videos. Very helpful!
Ive been doing this for a while since I was diagnosed with IBS and scitzoeffective disorder. My brain fog has cleared up alot. Alot Less brain/stomach inflammation in my body. I exercise as well! I start feeling like a young kid again in my body. My scitzophrenia is kept in check with the help of meds. And im living a relatively "normal" life. I dont do the keto diet. I use the low fod map diet. So basically no gluten, no milk, low carbs and white meats like chicken and fish vegetables low in carbs and inflammatory markers. And i am telling you its like i am a young girl! So happy this is working for you. The connection between gut and brain health is REAL. i also add fish oil which is ant inflammatory (omega 3) to my diet. Helps me out a ton!
@tlet4769 Nordic naturals 3000 MG a day for healing the inflammation in the brain. It's a bit expensive (even for me). But it works wonderfully that in conjunct with eating on the low fod map diet and exercising. The fish oil helps with brain inflammation. People with schitzopbrenia and autism have high inflammation in their brain, they have had wonderful progress healing their brain with REAL high grade fish oil and also REAL Hugh grade olive oil. 🫒 . The hard part is keeping to the diet (she follows keto, I follow the low fod map diet) you can check out a book about it in the library. :) Because it requires a very big lifestyle change the diet is the hardest to follow and skipped out alot. If you can't do the fish oil and or olive oil and can't do the keto diet. I'd say start with the low fod map diet. It'll help lower the inflammatory foods that cause brain inflammation. 🧠
Good luck, Lauren. I started a Keto diet about 2 months ago. One thing to be careful of is dehydration, which is typical on the Keto diet. Many people take electrolytes to help with this. The dehydration has been a stressor for me. Although generally, I haven't felt an increase in stress, I have had some nights/mornings the I felt my cortisol was elevated. My sense was that I wasn't getting enough fat and therefore the hunger led to the rise in cortisol. But I don't know for sure.
It's great you're adopting the ketogenic and lifestyle changes. It's also wise you're being guided through this process. If it does help, then that can give optimism to those of us with mental health disorders. I know I appreciate your move towards adopting this, as Dr Chris Palmer says, using a ketogenic diet has been a proven medical and dietary intervention for epilepsy and some anti-epilepsy drugs are used to treat mental health conditions. So there's at least some credibility and science behind this diet and lifestyle (sleep, exercise etc) I look forward to seeing your progress and seeing more of the process in coming weeks and months.
Ive used these for sleep they help me Micro dosing Melatonin Light therapy in the morning Morning walk Blue light blocking lights Glycine Taurine Theanine Innositol Acupuncture mat at night Magnesium threonate or glycinate B1 dr berg has a Natural version Hope your sleep gets better
Hello! I am thrilled you decided to look into your metabolic health. As a Type 2 Diabetic that has reversed the disease, no longer on diabetic meds, no longer on high blood pressure or cholesterol meds, the frustation with the traditional medical community is beyond the pale. I will be following this part of your journey with great interest because my brother was diagnosed with Schizophrenia over 30 years ago and his has gone into remission, without meds/was never on meds (that is a an interesting story for another time). There is some residual mental/emotional lingering things but he is doing well overall. That phrase, we are what we eat, has a whole new meaning for me. One thing I am certain about, you will feel alot better as time goes on...there is no doubt. ;-)
You didn't reverse your disease, you diet manage it. If you stopped managing it with your diet you would have to go back on medication to do so because you're still diabetic. I'm not trying to be rude but people see stuff like this and take it literally, it's important to be accurate. Happy for your wellness success 😊
This is a great opportunity for you, Lauren. Not everyone will have access to this sort of thing as having so many support personnel around you is not realistic for most. But you should definitely take advantage and use these resources. I personally have a history of disordered eating and won't do any sort of diet. And I do worry a bit about you with some past eating disorder history, too. Please do this carefully.
Hi Lauren, I've done keto (but for weight loss) many years ago and I can tell you will be able to eat delicious burgers/sandwiches even on a keto diet. There are a lot of ways to make your own bread. Grt used to using other types of flours! You will have to experiment with different recipes and different flavours and whatnot, but you will get there! Same for all the other carbs that are amazing. I used to love zucchini pasta, for example. You are gonna make it! And it's also for a very good reason! ❤
Unfortunately my psychosis happened while i was not sleeping well due to work anxiety and had nothing to do with the diet...still im doing a healthy balanced diet. Wish me luck!
I wish you luck with the new diet! I have the same diagnosis as you plus addiction problems. Sleep is my escape these days. I am 53 and, after suffering side effects my whole life I no longer do due to the doses of my meds being low.
Was caffeine mentioned in the drug questions? I have no idea if it's relevant, but it would be weird for the most popular drug to not be mentioned in that section?
Coffee is no good is you have had psychosis. Its a stimulant even considered a class 1 drug, but since it's a billion dollar industry is not considered a "drug" to society !
Hi, I have schizo-affective, 39 Ithaca, New York. I stopped keto diet. It did seem to stop the positive effects. On Abilify, and Clozaril. I was worse, seems to be improving, over time.
Thank's for being Open about the details in your life. Also; I had a hallucination episode this morning, it was true for a good 3 to 4 seconds' ( neat experience ? ) .
I just started thinking of doing keto yesterday for this purpose. I have pretty severe bipolar 1 with psychotic features that does not respond very well to medications. I have eaten low carb and found when i ate something without carbs like meat and veggies i felt calmer and more grounded. When i eat carbs I don't like how i feel. My problem is i love carbs so cutting them out completely makes me feel anxious knowing i would miss them. I also like to do intense cardio and worry i wouldn't have energy for that. Exercise is therapeutic for me so is important. However my symptoms are bad enough that they are so hard to tolerate and i have tried pretty much everything else so feel like a trial would be worth trying. '
My brother wanted me to recite an ancient viking spell to cure his mental illness. I didn't, because I didn't want to give him false hope and make him think he could go off his medication.
So glad you know more now so you can do the ketogenic diet properly! It is exciting but like you, I've got some healthy skepticism. I hope to be impressed with keto results asap! But yes, I have not had ANY one I've seen professionally advise me to focus on these metabolic interventions (holistic) - they just throw pills my way and say the pills are for life, and I'm sooooo over that being the only way!
I did the keto diet for a year and that was when I first started having psychosis. Keto was great for weight loss but it did nothing for my mental health.
@@Catlily5 like a song stuck in your head u mean? But if one knew the mechanism for audient thought and could stop it, then that is concious control. If youre believing in nonsense, filling your own mind with fantasy then that is on the individual.
@@bearclaus2676 I don't know the method for audient thought but I don't fill my head with fantasies anyway. However, I know people with OCD and schizophrenia. They would love to be able to stop their thoughts. If it was that easy there would be a lot fewer psychiatric hospitals.
You don't have viral mental illness then I suppose. The body positive movement proved that otherwise healthy people developed psychosis from controlling calories
Running is very stressful on the body and will increase anxiety. Walking would be a better exercise and it also doesn't destroy knees like running does.
I’m having a similar epiphany lately . I have been feeling so calm , relaxed , and just happy since prioritizing my physical fitness and health ABOVE ALL ELSE . I’m starting to realize there is nothing wrong with me , but society has a huge problem : our lifestyle makes us sick ! I take a medication that helps too , but it ‘ s only ONE as opposed to the ridiculous cocktail I used to be on at only 16 - 23 years old !! And I think people need to realize doctors are fallible humans like the rest of us ; and think about it - is it REALLY THAT likely that you have 10 different mental illnesses that need to be medicated with 10 different medications - OR IS IT MORE likely that you’re malnourished , drugged , stressed , and just overall unhealthy ? Most people don ‘ t even TRY to change their fitness and health , it ‘ s tragic ! Decades are shaved off of our lives ;(
This is convincing me! It’s clicking for me too that lifestyle makes us sick because I’m in between jobs and it’s given me time to realize how poor my health and exercise was during my last job. What steps did you take to turn things around?
I do not have mental illness, but I have lived on low carb 6-7 years. Benefits I experienced: Natural weightloss, full energy from waking up till falling asleep, never hungry, better skin, my pollen allergies disappeared, never ill (good immune system). A few months ago I went off low carb high fat due to testing out a new kind of food: Gut friendly food. Since I then can eat carb again, I am now eating too much carbs🤣 So I will try to find a combination og lc and gut friendly food. I do think low carb is gut friendy, but I need to add some more fiber I think. I am not sure yet, but I do miss lchf. I will follow you and hope this will make you getting rid of the disorder completely❤
I wish you all the best and hope that this change of diet and lifestyle will be beneficial to your well-being. But I also wonder, whether it's a good idea to change lots of things all at once. How can you know if it's the diet that is improving your mental health and not the consistent sleep schedule (for example)? Maybe changing one thing after another would provide more clarity about the effect each change has on its own.
If keto doesn't work for you or you want to try something else, your may want to look into the autoimmune protocol (AIP) diet. It's recommended by some naturopaths and doctors for mental health as well as autoimmune conditions and other inflammatory conditions. Worthlooking at anyway :) i wish you luck and am happy to see you looking at lifestyle as a treatment. I think a lot of the concerned commments may be assuming that you're planning to quickly stop your meds once you start keto, which i dont think I've heard you say much about so it may be a good idea to clarify.
I’m wondering if you have been tested for MTHFR gene variants and vitamin deficiencies that accompany it. I was having emotional dysregulation for a year. We found I had 2 MTHFR variants. We added methylated B complex, magnesium and now zinc and the difference in my physical energy and mental clarity is unbelievable. I’m now going to do some somatic therapy for stored trauma.
Skepticism is warranted but I think there is a lot yet to learn about metabolic disorders and metabolism in general, as well as how diet can affect sleep, mood, that sort of thing. Generally human beings at least seem very tolerant of varied conditions so I think it often gets brushed past for the sake of general population well-being. As for specific treatments/therapies I have no idea, but I hope more learning is done in these fields, it feels like there's a lot yet to discover. Hope things go well for you
very interesting - I will fallow you project. I want to do keto diet but i am in a dietitian thta desagree with it. She said is too risky to do it. I want to get the risk. I agree that the medical system just support the medication and if you talk about keto diet or others intervantions they desagree. I wish when I be in keto diet, i can stay in at list a lower dose of medication. I know also niacine in high dosages can help too. by the way I saw doctors speaking about inflamation and mental illnesses and i think is a big factor that keto diet can change.
Personally, I felt so physically unwell and tired on keto even with taking electrolytes. Supplementing methyfolate, methyl-B12 and omega 3 along with regular exercise and no alcohol has helped me though. Hope keto works well for you.
Hi been finding your videos really interesting as i didn't know anything about schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder before. I was curious what your current psychiatrist thinks about trying this and whether it could be effective. I guess they aren't able to recommend such interventions where there isn't a strong evidence base available yet. Good luck with it.
This is an evidence based therapy that has been used to treat epilepsy for the past 100 years. I suggest you check out Dr Chris Palmers book Brain Energy or listen to some of his interviews on RUclips where he explains why Metabolic Therapy is a valid treatment for Mental Illness.
Good luck! Exercise helps everyone. Just keep in mind that the "best" diet is not something that can be generalized. For example, Keto causes me to suffer inflammation and believe it or not, too many green leafy vegetables put a lot of stress on my kidneys. The reasons for that are personal to me... I have a blood type that does not carry minerals well (thalassemia trait...quite common). However most people don't have as much access to all the idiosyncratic inner workings of their metabolism like I do. I was an ultra marathoner and I was born with a genetic predisposition to OCD, which helped put me on a 40 year obsessive search for my ideal diet. I wanted to think I could make big changes with food. The bottom line is that it is extremely complex for everyone. Having said that, some of us just feel better being on some kind of regimen. It gives us a sense of control...and we need that control. That's why I don't necessarily think going keto is bad. BUT if you or anyone else is feeling low energy or suffering from bouts of extreme fatigue, make sure you insist that your doctors do every possible blood test as often as possible. Many serious issues get overlooked. In my case, I had a slow growing ( nearly ten years) parathyroid adenoma...two, actually... that , once removed, changed everything. I was drained, suffered from mood swings ...I was even hallucinating at one point. Sadly for me they were not detected until they almost killed me. Once removed I was an entirely new person.
Curious, as someone who wants to try these therapies. Are they covered by insurance? Or, do you have to pay out of pocket? I really want to try them, but I don’t know if I can afford them.
How do you deal with the intense hunger caused by psychiatric medication? I've tried to follow an Ayurvedic diet, but I couldn't sustain it, or any of the lifestyle changes, because of the hunger caused by heavy psych meds. I feel trapped by my meds that everyone around me assumes are the best thing in the world for me and want me on more and more of if I am being at all inconvenient. Just a thought, or question.
Thank you for sharing your mental health experience candidly and sincerely. This is the first post I'm making about any of your videos, so my comments do not specifically touch on the topic, but I'm hoping by posting to a very recent upload, you might see it. Some of the questions about what it means to be 'neuro-divergent' and 'reality' are thoughts I've often considered myself. Anhedonia is a reality in my life at this time, but I don't feel it is an 'issue' since I'm quite comfortable and secure in this place- and then I start to think about THAT too. But, this post is not about me- I just wanted to say that I appreciate you sharing thoughts and experiences that may not be 'neuro-typical' because it allows me, and I believe others, to view their mental health outside of set norms of 'normal vs. abnormal'.
Regarding your comment about drugs being the focus of treatment...I couldn't agree with you more. I discovered a Canadian Dr, Abram Hoffer, who did decades of research on vitamin deficiencies and how correcting these has helped people with schizophrenia. Interesting studies. I also found a video of a Canadian Dr that now lives in New Zealand who has a clinic studying the same principles. (Can't remember her name) but her theory is that diet, exercise, therapy should be the first methods of intervention, and drugs as a last resort
Our son, who is almost 50, is in a locked ward in a nursing home due to schitzophrenia which started when he was a teenager. He has been in and out of hospitals since then and now is locked up because he cannot take care of himself properly when he is on his own. He is now defiant and rude to anyone who tries to talk to him, including his doctor. He will not see us nor talk to us, blaming us for his problems. After seeing Dr. Palmer's work and further work by doctors who have found a link between Lyme Disease and mental illness we think that our son is a victim of misdiagnosis and should be tested for lyme disease and put on a ketogenic diet. We aknow he was bitten by a tick back when he was a teenager. It grew very large before he noticed it in his hairline. We don't know where to start in finding a way for him to be tested for lyme diseas now or how to get him on a Keto diet at this late date. He doesnt want to cooperate with us or anyone.
Hey , have you touched on the denial of having a mental illness ? , or if you went thru this symptom of this illness , I would love to hear your experience on this
I wonder how the keto diet compares to the follwing diet: - no/low processed food (no bread, no emulsifiers, artificial flavoring, beacon etc) - no wheat/flour products - try to keep suger spikes low by eating protein & fat in the beginning of a meal - protein from lean meat, fish, dairy & eggs - 12-16hour fasting window - break fast with high fat or high protein - only eat carbs in the evening, and only low processed carbs (potatoes, oats, rice) - try to eat 30 different types of veggies/fruit through out the week - prioritize omega 3 (avocado, fish walnuts) - dont eat 2-4 hours before going to sleep I imagine following the guidelines above and following keto will do some degree lead to similar diet changes compared to eg. the standard American diet, but the diet above would allow for more carbs and fruits, which might be easier to follow for some people who finds this feels less restrictive.
Hi I am 25 and have been diagnosed with schizophrenia bipolar type after my 2nd episode. I am scared of episodes the most. How many episodes have you had till now?

This will be the smartest thing you ever did…. Dr. Palmer is spot on. ❤
Is this hereditary......somebody plz answer......or people with birth complication get this?.....help me plz

First! Let's gooo - sounds like a great start. I'm sure this will be addressed but for me measuring ketones regularly is also key to success
(5th month of AP LAIs)

I'm pretty sure that the doctor that practices metabolic mental healthcare will address these issues with her.
I tried the Keto diet for a while but my anxiety got much worse and I was getting panic attacks. I dont think I was eating enough
How/what did you deal with the sleep? Thanks
Wishing you the best of luck with, and hoping you get to see some of the benefits that I have!
which medication are you on i am bipolar too lithuim invega

Love your winter sweater ❤
You should make a video with your doctor addressing some of the concerns in the comments. Best of luck to you!
I’ve heard great things of keto for psychosis and schizophrenia! Sending you all the strength and motivation

My psychiatrist was very clear to me about there being risks associated with drinking while taking medications for schizzoaffective disorder.
Did you do the diet on your own and get the good result? Thanks
What fish oil do you take? And how much? Thanks
Thank you for doing this!!!!! I posted on your video 10 months ago with Dr. Chris Palmer. Rooting for you to get a 100% recovery with this diet!!!
Best of luck, Lauren! Stay safe🌼
Good Luck!
Will follow your journey when possible.

So there's at least some credibility and science behind this diet and lifestyle (sleep, exercise etc)

I know you've talked before about struggling with eating disorders. I was wondering how that affects how you approach this?
lauren is awesome!
I've started Ketamine, and it's helped me more than 30 different medications. I was told lack of folate can make psych medication less effective.
Me to am dealing with brake through symptoms

My brother wanted me to recite an ancient viking spell to cure his mental illness. I didn't, because I didn't want to give him false hope and make him think he could go off his medication.
Are you doing keto in place of your meds or in additional to?
Keto affected me but not in the way I'd hoped. Good luck.
Yea, diet certainly won't stop fantasy thinking in sufferers of schizophrenia. Thoughts are up to the individual.

Cute nose ring!
I suggest you check out Dr Chris Palmers book Brain Energy or listen to some of
his interviews on RUclips where he explains why Metabolic Therapy is a valid treatment for Mental Illness.
well she did say she was looking for a new psychiatrist
But, this post is not about me- I just wanted to say that I appreciate you sharing thoughts and experiences that may not be 'neuro-typical' because it allows me, and I believe others, to view their mental health outside of set norms of 'normal vs. abnormal'.
Can someone make a recap of this ?
How do you handle the insomnia in the first time
Regarding your comment about drugs being the focus of treatment...I couldn't agree with you more.
Anyone reading this please pray that my brother gets well😢
i wish you good health then :(
Our son, who is almost 50, is in a locked ward in a nursing home due to schitzophrenia which started when he was a teenager.

I wonder how the keto diet compares to the follwing diet:
- no/low processed food (no bread, no emulsifiers, artificial flavoring, beacon etc)
- no wheat/flour products
- try to keep suger spikes low by eating protein & fat in the beginning of a meal
- protein from lean meat, fish, dairy & eggs
- 12-16hour fasting window
- break fast with high fat or high protein
- only eat carbs in the evening, and only low processed carbs (potatoes, oats, rice)
- try to eat 30 different types of veggies/fruit through out the week
- prioritize omega 3 (avocado, fish walnuts)
- dont eat 2-4 hours before going to sleep
I imagine following the guidelines above and following keto will do some degree lead to similar diet changes compared to eg. the standard American diet, but the diet above would allow for more carbs and fruits, which might be easier to follow for some people who finds this feels less restrictive.
