Supplements I Take on Medical Keto and Why It's SO IMPORTANT

  • Exploring supplements and especially ensuring I'm supplementing electrolytes in the beginning stages of medical keto have been absolutely crucial in feeling well while making this transition. In this video, I share with you exactly which supplements I take and why, as well as what my keto coach Nicole Laurent has to say about some of the supplements she has recommended I take while on medical keto. I also share some of the supplements that I intend to explore in the future once I know how medical keto affects my illness, so that they are less confounding variables in this project.
Pill case I talk about being very useful: amzn.to/3vbjxq4
    UPDATE:
Nicole had some additional insights regarding what I shared about taking ashwaganda and being interested in probiotics down the line. Here’s the advice she shared with me:
“I want to encourage you to not take that daily but on an as needed basis if you are dealing with a stressful time. On a ketogenic diet, your adrenal system starts working properly again. This herb is known to modulate hormones. I don't want it messing with your hormones because we are getting that back on track. It also has effects on liver, immune function and thyroid. It has neuromodulation effects on dopamine, serotonin and GABA! Your keto diet has got all those covered. It is a really powerful modulator in a body where things are not going well. But we do not understand it's effects in a body where things are going right. We don't know if the pathways modulated add to the ketogenic diet or get in the way. That said, I like a bit of Ashwagandha tea from time to time if I am feeling stressed for some reason, am a little tired, etc. I like Organic India brand.
And then probiotics! Please do not add a probiotic until we talk more about it first or even wait until after your six month experiment is over. The ketogenic diet radically changes the gut microbiome in favorable ways. We want to get out of it's way and let it do it's magic, which can include stopping seizures and helping put bipolar and schizophrenia in remission! As humans, and our current state of the research, we do not know best when it comes to microbiome. The ketogenic diet is already upregulating "good" bacteria in a sustainable way and rate that no probiotic is going to be able to touch. Also, most of the research on microbiome are not on ketogenic guts, although there are a few. So by all means go down the rabbit hole and explore in general, but I do not recommend you play with probiotics for yourself at this point in your recovery.”

be very careful with probiotics. Dr. Palmer has talked about 2 patients he's aware of who were very stable on ketogenic diet, started taking a probiotic, and psychotic symptoms came roaring back. Goes to show the strong gut-brain connection and the microbiome being a pivotal player in that. There have also been studies in seizure models of mice showing that if they have one mouse group with a ketogenic diet, and then another that is not - if they put the microbiome of the keto mouse into the normal mouse, they gain seizure control even without the diet.
As per your supplements - methlyfolate could be incredibly important - look at Carrie Brown's mental health story, she was mentally ill with bipolar and methylfolate was pretty much all she needed to get her brain back. I prefer to get it in whole food form - beef liver.
Sarcosine I haven't heard of, but egg yolks seem to be a robust source. Egg yolks also contain high amounts of choline which is great for the brain.
    Gingko - meh. No opinion
Omega 3 - for sure! For multiple reasons you should get a good amount of omega 3. I highly recommend the omegaquant omega3 test which shows your blood% of omega3. If it's under 8% you should be supplementing. The Japanese society averages around 8% omega3 - Americans under 4%.
Some supplements I'm very curious about
Urolithin A - Derived from pomegranate juice it is useful for mitochondria
Methlyne Blue - Very strange supplement but some evidence it aids mitochondria
coq10 - very high in heart muscle in beef and lamb, known to aid mitochondria
alpha lipoic acid - found in beef and beets
PQQ - found in fermented foods
Overall I would prefer to find these things in food but there is some interesting research going on

I had to stop an OTC probiotic recently because my racing thoughts and anxiety were outer limits for weeks! I have a 2+ year history toggling meds, which I'm now off, with various probiotics while working with both a nutritionist and psychiatrist. I personally decided to get back on the probiotic while tapering the meds, and so I thought perhaps it was med withdrawal. Nope! It was the probiotic. Within days I went back to normal, and haven't slid into those weird thought patterns since. I'm sticking with one spoonful of greek yogurt a day instead, which feels amazing.

Hi Lauren. I've been following you for a while and I just experienced something that I thought would be a great show! I went to Amen Clinics and had a SPECT scan on my brain. It's founded by Dr Daniel Amen, a psychiatrist. He does go on podcasts like yours. He also invites people who are public and have mental illness to be on his youtube channel. I think a show on SPECT scans would be helpful to a lot of people! I won't share links so my comment posts, but I just read this just now, "If you’re struggling with mental health issues or memory loss that isn’t responding to standard treatments, it’s time to consider brain imaging. Based on costs, availability in the psychiatric clinical setting, reliability, comfort, convenience, and research, brain SPECT imaging checks the most boxes." It's fascinating and a new development in psychiatry. Dr Amen says often, "Psychiatry remains the only medical specialty that rarely looks at the organ it treats-the brain." Sorry this is so long and sounds like a commercial but one more quote of interest, "n 2021, the Canadian Association of Nuclear Medicine (CANM) unanimously adopted new procedure guidelines for SPECT imaging for psychiatry and neurology. CANM endorsed brain SPECT imaging for the evaluation of several common conditions that impact millions of individuals, such as: Neuropsychiatric disorders: ADHD, bipolar disorder, clinical depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)" Soo... if you are interested he did a TED Talk and lots of other talks so you can search him out here on youtube. All the best wishes as always, Mary Michelle

While I haven't made any major changes, I've increased my protein intake, fluid consumption, and use of essential oils through balms and inhalation for anxiety. I also regularly drink cocoa and eat dark chocolate, and I exercise regularly. I've seen drastic and massive improvements in how I feel, my cognition, self-confidence, and ability to be more clear-minded, and I feel less depressed. Each person has their own preferences, but I particularly feel satiated and full when I eat omega-3s from salmon fish or consume fish oil. These lifestyle changes and product consumption help me manage myself effectively and what works for you may not work me and what works for both of us, may not work for others, but fundamentals and essentials are important but again, an individual has their own personal preferences, I'm glad you put up this video, happy to see you again.

My diagnosis is also schizoaffective bipolar type, and I was taking a small dose of Thorazine as needed for breakthrough hypomania and anxiety (in addition to my daily AP). But since taking taurine for several weeks now, I no longer need Thorazine and feel very stable. Now I can consume caffeine and don't feel anxious or hypomanic. Lack of sleep also induced hypomania, but I no longer experience that anymore on taurine. Tried many supplements over the years, but taurine is the king of natural mood stabilisers, IMO.

We tried all the supplements. The best one by a long shot was lithium orotate. My wife and I thought she was a lithium non-responder, but she had originally been prescribed it during a melancholia that had progressed to a catatonic stupor. By chance the stupor was lifted by benzos, and later on during a hypomanic episode she started taking lithium orotate and it was the first time prior to keto that anything had a real effect on the disease.
Anything with antidepressant properties such as ashwaganda seemed to just increase rapid cycling and cause agitation.

    • @evilm3274

Glad it works for her! I get rashes from lithium in any form but it's known to work very well for some. I take a low dose of an antidepressant to help the depression side and a high dose of an antipsychotic to keep me "down" but without those two I was miserable. (I'm bipolar type 2 with psychotic features) It's a balancing act and along with my mood stabilizers, I've been able to lead a pretty normal life after years of trying different types of meds. I'm on year 9 since my diagnosis and no hypomania in over 7 years.
Disclaimer- I'm just a patient and not educated enough to give any advice- just sharing my personal experience in hopes people realize that living with this disorder is manageable for some with medication. Diet and supplements never worked for me but I'll never knock someone's journey to get better with using a different route than I do. Everyone is different and there are so many things out there! Thank you for sharing.

@@evilm3274 That combination has become very popular in the United states. I think the evidence is against the practice, antidepressants are destabilizing and antipsychotics generally make the problem worse in the long term. The studies that lead to their approval involve a process called "enrichment" this is where the drug company runs elimination trials to weed out all the people who don't respond or get worse. When they finally have enough people left who can tolerate the drug they publish those results and leave the previous trials unpublished. They then show the data from the final trial to FDA. Other things they do is run the trials in developing nations known for corruption and bribery, pay high profile doctors to put their names on papers they never wrote, code suicides as benign trial dropouts and the list goes on. The reason I trust lithium is that it is unpatentable, a threat to their profits and has still out done everything else in RCTs.
Listen, the truth is out there and it's not on the internet, it's in history books. Go and read the work of doctors from before the pharmaceutical industry took over. Read about who discovered these drugs, where they came from, what nurses and doctors observed when they were first invented. The amount of information offline is staggering. Don't be sure if anything until you know the full history of these drugs. There are whole classes of medications that most people have never even heard of. You might think you tried hundreds of medications but most medications are just slight tweaks to get a new patent.
Both antidepressants and antipsychotics come from blue dyes that were first used to treat malaria, then used as antihistamines, the antihypertensives, then tranquillisers and then finally rebranded with the very dubious titles of "antidepressant" and "antipsychotic". I'm not saying they don't work, you've clearly seen a benefit but there is just so much more to their story and many reasons to be careful using them long term.

I think this will build up his basic health... hoping slowly to get him to walk outside, to be able to interact with the things he loves. Like reading, music and his friends. Even TV mobile or computer, which he has to avoid. I have ordered my first batch of three Sibio sensors. I have been watching you through your journey. You have helped me be a better 'carer' and mum to my son. Most of all, you have given me H O P E ❤
    Thankyou.

Really cool supplement/pill container! I've been struggling to manage without something like that. And I love what you shared in the video. I am on similar supplements for keto but the last ones you shared that could be confounding variables are really interesting and I'm curious to explore. Are you tapering off your medicine to see how low you can go/get off completely as the end goal? It's all so encouraging.

    • @loricat5606
      @loricat5606 Месяц назад +2

She said in one of her other videos that she did not intend to even consider tapering her medication until 6 months in. Her stated goal is to improve functioning & stability in general, and hence quality of life. While being able to go completely off of antipsychotic medication would be a wonderful outcome, that is not the focus or purpose of this experiment.
However, using medical keto led to something called overpotentiation (sometimes just called "drug potentiation", though not quite the same thing). Meaning, the concentration/strength of her antipsychotic medication(s) was made too strong, as if she had suddenly increased her dose by a major amount, even though the amount she was taking hadn't actually changed.
For that reason, she saw her psychiatrist and was given the "go-ahead" and specific directions for tapering medication and monitoring symptoms (she has also been closely monitored by her entire care team for this entire time anyway, including her psychiatrist), as the negative effects of doing nothing to address the overpotentiation outweighed the risk. (in terms of both quality of life and medical complications)
Overpotentiation is not exclusive to medical keto at all; it is a well known hazard that doctors have to consider when a person is taking multiple medications (or even supplements), because drug interactions can cause it.
I hope this is helpful/clarifying to you! (I am not a doctor, and I am just relaying what I have understood from closely following Lauren's medical metabolic interventions project, with the addition of some quick Google searches to make sure I am using the definitions of words correctly.)

Thank you for all that information! I've been following along as well and remember what she said about waiting 6 months to taper; however, in this video she said that she is tapering her medication, so going lower I assume and I thought recently she said she was on her lowest dose to manage her symptoms of 60mg instead of maybe 100 but maybe she is tapering again. @@loricat5606

Electrolytes are so important and underrated. I have the same potassium and mag on my nightstand. If it starts hurting your stomache you can do foot soaks for a couple minutes when you need it instead. Epsom salts for mag, nosalt powder for potassium. Note the can prev gentle is cut with mag oxide while the ultra gentle is just bisglycinate so that might be easier on digestion as well.

Two more things to note. Boron is magnesium sparing. I take a lot less magnesium after taking boron only a few times.
As well high magnesium intake can also cause you to need more potassium. So if you start needing more that can be a factor. Zinc, b12 and other things also create potassium need. Welcome to the electrolyte treadmill. Part of the healing process for so many conditions.

While this is not something I can directly link without there being really any studies on it, best believe after the 2 shots of b12 I needed (afterwards I was out of a hypomanic stage in a day with no changes to my meds) I started taking that as a supplement. @@evilm3274 Well said, and same here.
The commenter ( @tverve ) doesn't seem to understand that some people's bodies don't absorb nutrients properly, and have to take an increased amount as a result. There is a strong evidence base showing that brains with schizophrenia have problems with absorbing some nutrients. Antipsychotic medications (which Lauren is taking) and other types of medications are well known to cause higher rates of nutrient depletion.
It also appears that the commenter didn't watch much of the video either, since it's explained within the first ten minutes that "there is no perfect diet in which supplementation is not useful or helpful in any way shape or form" (and that is a well-known fact in the field of medicine, regardless of keto). It's also explained that bodies in ketosis don't absorb various nutrients in the same way as other bodies, and that keto ( ) restricts many foods that are essential for getting good amounts those nutrients - so no, it's impossible for someone to "just follow a balanced diet" to get what someone needs on an extreme medical intervention that messes with that process directly, @tverve.
I have severe recurring iron deficiency (anemia) of multiple types. My doctors have noted that even on specialized iron supplements, my body does not absorb iron properly. As far as anyone can tell, I will have to take increased amounts of iron of specialized types for the rest of my life. The amount I am currently taking, as prescribed by my doctor, would be dangerous for the average person. It is not possible for me to get this amount (especially of the specific types of iron I need) through food, @tverve . I would die from iron deficiency. I have also been instructed by my doctor to take a specific high amount of vitamin C (this is also a supplement), since that plays a role in the absorption of iron, and we are currently monitoring my body's response. I have also been shown as low in other nutrients, through extensive blood tests, and I have been instructed by my doctor to take various supplements for that too (with these other deficiencies I be able to address it with food, but I have been told by my doctor to focus on regulating my iron levels and becoming stable in my health before even attempting that).
@tverve , your ignorance is dangerous (or as you might say, ridiculous).
