  • I bring you along on the first week or so of reducing my antipsychotic medications as a result of being on medical keto. I was not anticipating having to adjust my medications so quickly, but the effects of potentiation (covered in the last video) made it necessary. If you are in a similar position, please work closely with your psychiatrist and care team to manage it.

I was very skeptical about the keto diet for mental health (without knowing anything about it admittedly) and I'm finding it very interesting. I'm a clinical psychologist so I'm following along to see how it works. I wish you continued success.

You might have to get used to it because it is the answer. It is also the answer to many other ailments, such as diabetes, potential cancers, dementia, and a whole host of other serious illnesses not just schizophrenia. I am sorry that the medical profession is so woefully inadequate to not know these things. I have been dealing with my sister’s illness and caring for her for 35 years.

Nutrition is something drs really don’t spend much time studying in med school. We didn’t learn anything about it at all for my BA in psychology. I was going to go the med school route for psychiatry. But am doing PMHNP instead. 95% of serotonin is produced in the brain. We really are what we eat… and chronic inflammation is often a large reason why people experience mental illness overall. we need to take it more seriously and use meds as a third line approach… they’re too often thrown out as a first line and it’s inappropriate for most humans.

This is all fantastic to see. Just a word of caution from someone who has been there - if you keep going down on your meds and you still feel great, you might reach a point where you go - hey i'm feeling great! I'm cured! I can have a few more carbs, everybody else can have them, I'm sure it's fine - and you can very quickly find yourself not eating as much fat as you need and keeping carbs as low as you need. It is the equivalent of not taking your medications! It seems everyone has this experience when the diet is working because we like to think we are smarter than we really are. So just keep vigilant and maybe ask those around you to keep you accountable when that day comes. Because I think it is coming sooner rather than later! A good problem to have. Cheers!
Also, for Rob - if you really need a laxative, up the MCT oil! Promise you it will do the trick - will help with ketones too

Turned out carbs do not taste the same as they did before, takes about a month to get high from sugar carbs. On top of that I need my meds at a higher dose again. So heads up Keto is great, just stay with it. Honestly not worth taking a break for some dumb event. Cool video.

Be careful of some of those Keto food snacks. Every Keto snacks that I've seen on shelves, most of the time, have unhealthy ingredients like corn syrup. Keto falls in the line with Paleo and supposed to have natural ingredients. Corrupted food companies always find loop holes in laws to lie about what is in your food. For example, I just found out that "Corn Syrup", which I always say is very bad to consume, has more carbohydrates than wheat and table sugar and companies found a loop hole to not display the correct amount of "Carbs" that is in the food. Also, "Corn Syrup" is not actually categorized as a food since it is one of the most processed ingredients.

And pesticides that tax the body and corrode gut health also - which is part of what doing keto is supposed to help reverse.. gut damage / inflammation etc.
also the consumption of chocolate where there tends to be astronomical levels of Lead and Cadmium.. they accumulate in the body/brain and can contribute to an exacerbation of symptoms. just mentioning these things so ppl don’t hinder their own progress unknowingly, since the goal is to be FREE!!!!

@@gecooooo I could be wrong but I'm looking at this from two perspectives - as a content manager and a viewer who doesn't have a severe mental illness. As a content manager, this series has to have been planned to some extent. It makes no sense that she would create food and ketone measurement videos for five or six months before reducing meds. They need a story to tell and that story needs progression or views will drop. So, I believe she planned to reduce meds all along as part of the story. From the perspective of someone without a mental illness, I have watched this channel long enough to know that she has delusions about taking medication and has often expressed her desire not to take it (I don't blame her; it has side effects.). I also think she is a little manic and overly optimistic about being cured through diet. For these reasons, I think she told her doctor exactly what she felt he needed to hear to get him to agree to reduce her meds. I don't know if she is self-aware enough to recognize this, but let's be frank. She found a doctor to significantly change her medication over the phone without looking at her in person and evaluating her. I say she's driving this because I think she has a clear goal with this experiment and will say and do what she needs to in order to reach said goal. I am a little cynical and pessimistic about this, admittedly. I truly hope it works for her. That said, I think she displays manipulative and narcissistic behaviors that could be to her detriment. I also think monetizing this colors the outcome.

Ive dealt with schizophrenia really bad since i was early 20s, but had it all my life. I self medicated with cocaine and booze, like alot of us do. 3 years ago i went carnivore and i havent picked up a drug since. Im able to handle my extreme paranoia better now, and stop it. I like watching youre channel. ALOT of us, especially the older ones like myslef didnt have anywhere to turn or anyone to talk to, so naturally we turned to drugs and booze. If more people knew that ketosis can save you, i feel like everything would change. Idk

I suffer from mental/medical illnesses. Also attempted murder on me by others every day all throughout the day for years. And if this is too much information, I do apologize. But, I also have schizoaffective. I am so overwhelmed, and I'm lucky if I even change my clothes. You are so smart. From my C-PTSD, I have brain damage and had many concussions. Although, I AM interested in keto! You are so amazing, you've also got yourself together! I haven't seen my son in 5 years. And I haven't seen my husband in almost 5 years too. He got sober 4 years ago. I have been an addict for 36 years. And I have 28 days and 4 days ago I quit the nicotine vape. I'm so ready! I have God. I have people who love me. I really don't know what I'm doing telling you about my life like this. But, I feel like you understand. Thank you for listening. Good luck with your medication! Good luck with keto, you and your husband. You two have a lovely life. Thanks again.

As far as I have learnt about keto, and would love to hear your take on this. I think you should check about reducing your number of meals, restricting your eating window or entirely shift to one meal a day and prolonged fasting of 36 hours to as far as you are comfortable.
I have been diagnosed with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome yesterday and was curious if fasting and keto would help.

Taking in too much protein triggers a digestive response where the body breaks proteins down to sugars. Just a little explanation for the low keto values, but don't sweat it! The important thing is to continue having fun with the diet and forging a new standard in lifestyle living.
For Rob, I'd recommend eating an extra bowlful of steamed broccoli. The fiber drop-off from cutting out carbs is heinous, and can lead to some painful movements. Other people have recommended solutions, so I'm sure you've got this all taken care of. But you better believe I'm waiting for an update!
Regarding balancing the macros, I recommend focusing on increasing the almond intake. In addition to them being high fat and low carb, they're also really good for absorbing the increased LDL-cholesterol that your diets are likely to include.

Do you guys or you guys down here in comments know of an antipsychotic for schizoaffective disorder that's limited in causing weight gain and akathisia? I'm on risperdal and switching to abilify because my new doctor and I agree the symptoms of risperdal for young men are UM...not good... With that said the risperdal is giving me horrible akathisia in the hours after taking it and abilify seems like a very similar drug. Dr. Tracey marks says the antipsychotics that cause the least weight gain are the most akathisia causing. Weight gain is my enemy and small increases cause me very real and drawn out distress but I seem to get horrible akathisia as well. Is there something out there or will I have to take an anti-akathisia med as well?

    • @80islandia
      @80islandia 3 месяца назад +1

That’s a really good question. I’m a woman who gained 50 lbs on risperidone, went off it and lost the weight, then got prescribed Abilify, which I was on for only a couple months.
My psychiatrist at the time “sold” me on Abilify because it was less likely to cause weight gain, but I heard anecdotally from other patients and people on Reddit that it does. I’m not sure if the extent is the same as risperidone, but I’d say if you’re concerned maybe take control where you can by plotting out a workout regimen and doing some meal planning.
I don’t think any of the meds are weight gain side effect free, but I’ve heard about the class action lawsuit against risperidone for the impacts it has on men and think (hope!) Abilify is better in that regard.
Akathisia is something I haven’t personally experienced and don’t know much about. Perhaps someone else can comment on what worked/didn’t.
Good luck and sending well wishes your way. I know it can be challenging to find a combo that works.

As everyone responds differently to meds it's hard to say for certain but many people find lurasidone and amisulpride don''t cause much weight gain. I personally have no issues with weight gain on quetiapine but I know many people who do. The only antipsychotic that caused me akathisia was aripiprazole but I didn't experience it with risperidone.

I am not a psychiatrist. I am a former psychiatric nurse So that is my experience and my limitation What you are considering is very typical. A person with a psychotic illness has a period of stability and reduction in symptoms. Because the illness brings with it delusions and lack of insight the belief develops that the medication is no longer needed. The person stops the medication and then develops florid, pronounced psychotic symptoms. There turn often follows prolonged period of instability, often needing hospital treatment. I urge you not to stop your medication. Please make an appointment with your psychiatrist. Best wishes.
