- I'm officially in ketosis and in this video I share what the process of getting into ketosis has been like and what changes I'm experiencing. A reminder that ketosis is when your body and brain no longer use carbohydrates and glucose as fuel, but instead use fat as a fuel source and produce what are called "ketones".

I’m sorry to say while it looked like you seemed hopeless,,, for several years I felt I could not get any useful information and hope for myself of your videos… however it now seems like you have a belief you may heal of your schizophrenia symptoms,,, and I am now seeing hope in that I might learn something I can use to help me continue healing of schizophrenia.
this is wrong, a known mistake that beginners are not aware of
Happy New Year! I look forward to more content in 2024. ❤
You brain had been destr0yed by these drugs.
Just FYI, I work at Starbucks and baristas are making drinks just as customized/complex as the ones you ordered (and more) all day long, so you don't have to feel at all silly about ordering them. It's totally normal.
Haha thank you for helping me to feel better about it!

I started doing this with you on Dec. 20. I am a therapist, in California, and want to experience this journey myself in hope to improve my mental and physical health AND to potentally recommend this option to my family and clients. Thanks for sharing your experince. ❤
Apparently it's how people have lived for millennia before modern farming and industrialization. Can you imagine how you will feel once you get a pattern to your diet? I'm very hopeful for you and hope your journey will help other people. Thank you for what you're doing. There are many of us with family that have schizophrenia and it's not well understood in society.
I’m not trying to discount your experience or Lauren’s at all, but it’s not true that ketosis is a better or more natural state for our bodies. We know that it’s an adaptation that allowed our ancestors to *temporarily* survive on their body fat during periods of food shortages. Like almost every animal, our bodies use glucose as the default fuel.
@@madsthefreed Makes sense. I do think our bodies are designed to survive for long periods when carbohydrates are in short supply. Modern diets aren't well suited for us with the amount of sugars we consume. It makes sense to me that our bodies can heal during ketosis. A schedule of on and off ketosis is probably ideal.
@@madsthefreedI’m on the fence about keto. It’s not a miracle nor is it gonna kill you, but i find it FASCINATING learning about how your cellular metabolism can be influenced by your diet. I think the research indicating keto’s benefits for those suffering with psychiatric issues is interesting and promising. I mean, keto was first introduced in the modern age as a means of combatting epilepsy, not for fat loss or anything of that nature.
This is interesting and I'm enjoying your videos about it. One tip I may add is being careful about this topic in front of your kids. Kids take "diet lingo" in and can get body image issues and disordered eating. "Carby" is an ok term to use with you and your hubby but kids shouldn't hear it over and over, or feel like what they eat is taboo or "bad" for you.
but arent people doing that now with fatty food?
@@Julia_Berrrlin absolutely, and it's damaging. Especially to impressionable kids. We need to model food is fuel for our bodies and isn't "good" and "bad". Food is just food.
We’re definitely trying to be mindful of how we talk about this change around the kids. And really making it clear that carbs aren’t bad, but we’re reducing them as a medical intervention for my schizoaffective disorder specifically. It’s definitely something to consider though how we talk about it with and around them!
@@LivingWellwithSchizophrenia that's awesome context for them. I didn't think you would be doing it any other way but wanted to open a dialouge about the issue.
I've always had awful dysphoria just due to growing up in a home with a mom always dieting & using harmful language. It's easier than people realize to transfer to their children. Thanks for bringing this up.
Dear Lauren, I've been subscribed to you for a little while and you seem to be a bit of a pioneer voice for this with schizophrenia. Well done. I've been in ketosis for eight months and lost 46 pounds or 21 kg. But my first improvement is to be able to walk three times more. Medications for me affects motivation and satiety,, both of which are improved with ketosis. As for my state of mind I was symptom free going into it and have remained that way. Also my digestive system has improved out of sight! I can't eat fats because I've got to burn body fat, and I can't eat carbohydrate so that just leaves protein. No worries!. Yours truly from Australia.
I am loving the big, broad smiles! Omg, I really hope this brings you much relief!
I noticed the same thing! 😄
As someone who does not have Lauren’s symptoms, I can only imagine how freeing it must b for her to not experience or a have tamping down of symptoms due to her eating habits, et al.

I really hope this new diet continues to b positive for u. If anyone deserves some peace, it’s u.

My ONLY resolution for 2024 is to be in perpetual ketosis and abolish all memory of my punishing psychedelic-induced psychosis that has stolen nearly 5 years of the prime of my life.
Here's to dedicating the rest of our natural lives attaining far greater than what was taken from us 😁
Did psychedelic cause harm to you?? Because these are the hot topics in psychiatry nowadays because of their heal properties and mind blowing effects on brain…
I loved seeing your kids! So quiet and well behaved
Ive been keto for two years but more recently I’ve been a little more lax with carbs like I’ll eat up to 40 g of carbs a day or two a week. I want to try the really strict keto and see if it’s better. Such a good idea to nix the seed oils. I love seaweed but most of it is covered in seed oils. It’s tricky but so happy for you to try this lifestyle out and see if it’s a good fit. Love your videos!!
Thanks!
Embracing a lifestyle transformation is a peril that is golden and shines like a diamond through sun rays casting the beams throughout and reflecting through the glass and the interdimensional beautiful ornaments just like your life is that is hopeful and beautiful, I've noticed profound shifts as well in my bio-synthesis and overall body and brain chemistry. These changes, significantly influenced by external factors, have reshaped my cognition, mental resilience, and adaptability. While I haven't curtailed my caloric intake, I've incorporated a considerable increase in fluid consumption, particularly plain water. This, coupled with physical activities like weightlifting, cognitive challenges, and a conscious effort to avoid procrastination, has remarkably enhanced my well-being.
Venturing out of my comfort zone, exploring new experiences, and engaging in diverse activities have substantially alleviated my paranoia, anxiety, and psychotic agitations, among other fears. Moreover, these changes have bolstered my confidence, enabling me to navigate crowds with ease and communicate with a sure and relevant tone. This journey has been an introspective, nuanced, and differential approach to life, revealing the profound impact of lifestyle choices on personal health and psyche. I'm happy that this helps you, and this something that i have changed and entered a remission of Hodgkins Lymphoma has as well made me more clear minded, confident, with better grasp and recognition of my mood changes, less feeling of being trapped in a mind, a body, and the feeling of inability to put my thoughts into words. I'm happy to see that so many events are synchronized with each other, things that have changed for good, have as well changed for me.
You and Rob are so adorable! I’m looking forward to following you along in your journey. How long before starting Keto did you stop your medication?
I did get the keto flu... felt horrible. I believe that was mostly due to all the meds I was already on and also because of the daily fruit smoothies I thought was so good for me that I stopped cold turkey. One supplement that is flippin awesome for me is Alpha-GPC, loads of energy but I did notice that I had to cut the evening dose in half so I could. Now I take 3 doses throughout the day with no issues... Oh, massive headaches with that one as well, but that has dissipated as well. Prayer to you and yours.
I’m so happy to hear you’re feeling well. Are you doing this diet in conjunction with your meds or in place of?
I noticed that wakefulness at night also when I started keto. I also noticed some hypomanic symptoms. I managed to get through it. But make sure you Resteverkaufes if you don’t sleep
Awesome!! Keep it up! Now I will share a relevant (and helpful?) comment I just left on a Metabolic Mind video:
Our son is 19 with the same diagnosis. We are trying time restricted eating (7 or 8 hr window) with a largely keto diet otherwise, while keeping high value carbs such as wild rice, sprouted lentils, etc. and various vegetables and blueberries. Perhaps a bit over 50 grams of carbs per day, but the breath keto meter shows frequent ketosis. Also using berberine for improving insulin sensitivity (another common issue with schiz.). I have a relative living in Clearwater who had terrible triglyceride numbers, until I told him about time restricted eating. After one year, his doctor said she'd never seen such a dramatic improvement in that short a time. He got off all heart meds. Note he is someone with his own mental health issues, & continued to smoke, drink and eat pizza! This shows time restricted eating can have massive benefits. If you throw in other things as are known to help, well I guess time will tell... We are also doing things to feed the gut microbiome like resistant starch, inulin, ground flax and psyllium husk fibers, and are using chicken and cod liver (along with beef liver at times), bone stock, and mushrooms shown as neuroprotective. Also using CBD which has been very helpful in treating schizophrenia in the literature, avoiding gluten, and mainly sticking with raw sheep products for dairy. His previous psychotic breaks resulted in hospitalization & were generally associated with high THC consumption. He may have avoided hospital trips had he abstained. At least for now, he's continuing to abstain. Also, check out sleeping grounded (aka "Earthing"), it is an important anti-inflammatory, and a quality of sleep booster. Lastly, our son's room had mild mold issues for years. We suspect mycotoxins played a role in helping push him over the edge with his first and some following breaks. We're using activated charcoal in the morning to sop up mycotoxins now, as well as better air filtration and air to air exchangers. All food is organic/self-harvested or backyard grown. He does cross country with the school team. Note he has spent several months in hospitals or group home environments a number of times, so his condition was very serious...
While this may all sound like a lot, I simply see it as returning to a lifestyle that many humans have known for a majority of our history. We can return to such practices without much extra cost or issue as required. Peace.
so happy for you! 🎉 it sounds like it is going well, fingers crossed this will really help you 🙏🏻…I am doing the same for major depression + chronic fatigue but I have not had any benefits yet…I keep staying in very low ketosis and not every day and I gained sone weight! each of us is different so I am still hoping and giving it a little more time..I am older than you and a little overweight and with insulin resistance so I guess that may ne interfering, it’s a bit of a bummer, am really really hoping to get the energy..and help with mood 🙏🏻 best to you both and the kids
you should track a few days and check if there are any hidden carbs in your diet. Aim for 20g total carbs or less.
Weight gain might be too little fat and too much protein. Or too much butter and too little protein, so it takes you longer to get full. Aim for a 80%fat,20% protein ratio
I'm not sure keto diet is a right answer for depression. Note that depression is usually considered as opposite spectrum of mental illnesses compared to schizophrenia. That does not mean you should gorge on sugar (especially glucose and sucrose) but small amounts could help you when you fill fatigued. Especially if you are doing physical exercise to combat depression.
@@aleksazunjic9672 I recommend reading brain energy for a deeper understanding
@@Julia_Berrrlin thanks! I have been tracking everything for over 2 months now...I am way over on the chronometer app with both fat and protein because I am focusing on carbs under 20 (have been doing it very slowly, even though I was not that high with the carbs to begin with, because I am having a hard time with so much fat and protein and missing the veggies a lot...) I am following a system and in a fb accountability group but not convinced this is sustainable for me, waiting for dr. Ede's book to come out..
@@aleksazunjic9672 thanks, actually upon the research I have been doing it supposedly shold help a lot for depression too (and other issues) note that as I have written, I have other issues piling on top, insulin resistence and Hashimoto, plus I am a bit overweight, not fit like Lauren, and older. As for exercise, I can only manage long walks which are very good for the depression, but I am also dealing with the fatigue (and the Hashimoto) so intense exercise backfires...thanks for sharing
Hi Lauren, to answer questions you asked during the video; yes, anything that depletes your glycogen stores will help you enter ketosis a lot quicker. Also, it's normal to have more energy at night when you eat a clean diet and to need less sleep. I remember when I was fasting, on a juice feast or a raw diet, I had tones of energy and needed a lot less sleep! I'm sure you can find RUclips videos explaining this phenomenon.
I'm also very glad to see your experiment is going well! You inspire me to share my journey on RUclips as I am reminded of all the positive effects I had when my diet was more in check. This is not a keto diet per say that improves the symptoms of schizophrenia and mental illness but the fact that the body enters ketosis which you can obtain by simple fasting and also getting the proper nutrition (I used a whole food higher carb lower fat plant-based diet). I never needed anti-psychotics and I am highly functional. Thanks for sharing your journey with us. It takes a lot of courage! :)
In my experience the fatigue was caused by a lowering of my blood pressure! This can be mitigated by drinking more electrolytes, like a bullion cube in warm water.
You are doing fantastic. I wish my diet to control a physical chronic condition allowed me to join you as I would love to take this plunge too! I have GAD and I wonder if this would help it too. Another thing you could say too when ordering, if you felt comfortable, is that it is a medical keto diet. That puts you in a different space. When I have to change an order drastically because of my diet, I always say that I am on a diet to control a chronic condition. That way people don't see me as being the difficult customer just because I don't like something. I honestly can't eat it or it will harm me.
Pretty exciting and hopeful that ndeed!
I have bulletproof coffee in the morning, it really helps me get into ketosis quickly.
Woot!!!! Blessu!!!!
Watching you go through this process has been extremely helpful and encouraging. I have endured life with severe depression and am hoping that maybe going keto may help alleviate some of my depression. I am scheduled with my clinician in a couple of weeks and am going to ask about it. I am hoping to see if diet may help in decreasing the amount of meds I have to take just to get out of bed on a daily basis.
I am in the same position and have only started to feel better when i improved my diet and added exercise and a good sleep routine. What I found to be most helpful was
cutting out all processed foods. Taking care of your metabolic health is key to being well both physically and mentally. I wish you well.

I tried keto for the first time in July 2023, had keto flu and quit for that reason plus a couple of other reasons. This time around, the last few weeks of going back on keto, no keto flu at all, didn't do anything differently I can think of this time around. Why do you take magnesium and potassium like that? You seem to be positive/doing well. I hope Rob gets better soon. Is there any placebo effect to ketosis?
there's a fluid shift in the body, as carbs hold on to a lot of water. She's taking it to make sure she's not developing deficiencies as the body adapts.

Dear Lauren, Please make suggestion about taking Niacin as recommended by Dr.Abram Hoffer. This is the orthomolecular approach to Schizophrenia. I have been using this treatment for a while and has been showing some significant improvement. Can you make an update on this mega vitamin therapy and if possible please make a video of it so that it helps other who are newly diagnosed. Please make a comment on this.
Back in the first half of the 20. century there was a thing called insulin shock therapy, where they lowered patients' blood glucose to the point they fell in coma, using massive insulin doses. They kept them in this state for long periods at a time and their symptoms often improved afterwards (except some patients did not survive the treatment). I think this whole keto thing is working in a similar way, just safer
I would love to know if you ever struggled with disordered eating? I think for people with a history of that a change like that would be a bit risky.
That is something I've struggled with, and I will definitely be discussing this deeper in a future video. There are actually studies that have been done though that have found the ketogenic diet to be an effective therapeutic intervention for anorexia. I would recommend checking out some of the videos on this topic over on the @MetabolicMind RUclips channel!

Try eating more protein and less carbs. When you feel cravings coming on just have some protein available with some cheese, nuts and olives. I sometime just eat a
tablespoon of cream cheese with bagel seasoning and it seems to help.
Thanks for the tip! I do find that small amounts of protein help more than anything else. @JadaRose880
As someone with a huge history of eating disorders my only concern is that this could be ED masked. I know thats not the intention but I know how great it feels at the beggining to feel control over what you eat. Maybe i’m totally wrong but it is something to think about.
There's been a recent case study series where keto put anorexia into remission - you should check those out, really impressive results
Would recommend checking out some of the videos over on the @MetabolicMind RUclips channel where they go into depth about using the ketogenic diet as a therapeutic intervention for anorexia! I will also be sharing my own experience and thoughts on this as someone with a history of eating disorders now using the ketogenic diet in an upcoming video.
I have an ED history as well, in addition to a schizoaffective diagnosis. I think one difference to keep in mind in this case is that EDs are about control and taking ownership of one’s treatment plan is about empowerment.
Having a mental illness is disempowering in so many ways, and as long as there’s mindfulness and intention to work from a place of self-love rather than self-loathing, trying an intervention like this can be empowering as opposed to controlling.
There’s always that fine line, but Lauren seems very aware and is under supervision. I hope that makes sense! ❤
With your Starbucks order, you have given some comedy writer out there a beautiful gift.
Eat pasta with beans every day it's pretty much the only thing I ate also some sort of tamto sauce it kept me full and it was easy to make
acetone is not implicated in brain health, the ketone which infers neuroprotective benefits is beta hydroxybutyrate and can only be measured via blood
You need to try KetoBM blood monitor. It will clear your understanding
I'm not sure if you've changed microphones or recording setup, but I'm noticing less siblance and mouth noise. Very interested to know if that's due to the diet
