One general trick I've learned for landscape paintings is if the sky is the main interest, put the horizon line around the bottom third to have more sky. If the foreground is the main interest, put the horizon line around the top third to have more foreground.

Hi Susan, a big thank you for this, so many other artists just do a painting but never explain the rules. This has been invaluable to me as I too just sit and look at my paper and don't know where to start, I'll certainly be using the value study to get me started. Keep up the great work you're doing.

Thank you so much for being the type of teacher who has definite goals, a precise presentation, and demonstrations of your goals. As a newbie to art, but also a teacher, I have been so frustrated trying to gleam the facts and examples to learn art techniques. If all of the talented people on u-tube could use your teaching techniques, they could reach so many more of us. (What is your background? Were you a teacher in another area?} Again a sincere THANK YOU!

Thanks so much Sue! Yes, I've actually had teaching experience in homeschooling my oldest son, and I also ran a summer camp with 50+ kids. I provided arts and crafts lessons for them and that was crazy! But fun! I truly love teaching.

Thank you for all your videos! I just found pastels for myself and enjoy watching tutorials, tried some painting myself, never done it before. Do you think I can learn to paint even if I've never painted in my life?

Anastasiya Bowdoin sorry it has taken me so long to respond! Yes, you can absolutely paint if you’ve never done it before. You might also want to join our Facebook group… “Monet café art group.” It’s a great place to learn from other artists.

Susan, would you consider doing a lesson on your mark-making and your blending technique? I'm having a real struggle learning to loosen up my scumbling and layering of one color gently over another...coming from CPencil background, and trying to make these gentle marks....help? And thanks for all the lessons, and the references to God's beautiful nature!!!

    • @monetcafe

That sounds like a great topic for a lesson. I know that we can all get too heavy-handed too quickly often when drawing and painting. I just got my studio together again after the flooding of my home due to hurricane Irma, so I'm making a list of great topics for new videos and I hope to get the time to accomplish this soon. In the meantime, you might want to find our facebook group, Monet Cafe' Art Group. There are so many artists helping each other grow and learn. You have to ask to join the group and there are some questions to answer. Just make sure you mention that you heard about the group from the RUclips channel. Thanks so much for your comment and Happy Painting! :)

I'm a sister in Christ also, and Gods' given me talent and eyes to 'see' color and value-since my love of pastels, I've been on a journey to explore all the brilliant 'pushing' of color---my hard to accomlish spot is the ability to scumble, or lightly touch the pastel to surface...any ideas as to how I can train my hands to do this? I'm 'technically-disabled' (although I am HEALED in Jesus' name); and I can do CPencil all day long, but I LONG to get control enough to have the light touch...if you cannot think of any help, pray that I'll be able to do this-I love pastels more than any other medium, and am determined to use them in the loose manner YOU do! And I LOVE your work! Where do you sell them? Thanks ever so much, Marlene in GA

What do you think made it bad? If you’re going to criticize, at least give a reason or some pointers to make it constructive so that it doesn’t come across as rude or hurtful. I thought it was a great lesson.
