    I watched this yesterday and actually followed it step by step today. It really is very good -- very good for beginners who may be new to painting as well as pastels -- really, everything you do in this video could be done with color pencil, or oils or acrylics -- It really is an excellent lesson in landscape painting through and through. Quite wonderful.

    Hi Susan, and thanks for this video. Not sure if this is a dumb Q, but I'm really struggling to get my head around pastels. I'm trying to understand why anyone would use pastels? What is their appeal? I mean, what you achieved with this painting, you could've achieved with just watercolours, or acrylics, or oils, or a combination thereof. So why use pastels? They are messy, and not as easy to hold as a brush, and you cant do fine detail with them. People use watercolours because of the flowy, ethereal, dream-like look of the painting that they offer; people use oils n acrylics because of the bold brush marks, vibrant colours, easy handling and so on. Why do you use pastels???
    Second Q: do you ever use oil pastels? If not, why not? If you have used them, what is the difference that you found between them and pastels? And why did you prefer the latter?
    Third Q: if you dont fix your paintings with fixative, what do you use instead?
    Last but not least, I have been frustrated with my studio for a while, then I saw your video where you did up your studio, and a lightbulb went off. Now Ive got ants in my pants and I'm itching to re-do my studio space! Out of all the 'studio revamp' videos on RUclips, yours inspired me the most. Loved the open shelving w/ easy accessibility to your materials, and how large the shelving was. Also loved how you had an easel station, as well as a table easel station. Thanks so much for the inspiration!

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  5 лет назад +2

      That is actually a great question. There are some disadvantages to pastels for sure... and another one is that you need more colors than with many other mediums because they don't really "mix" the same. However, one of the advantages that attracted me early on was their "user-friendly" way of not needing any mixing and since they are a dry medium they won't dry up if you have to walk away for a while. I started painting again when my kids still had very busy lives and I had to squeeze in limited time for myself to paint. My pastels were always patiently waiting for me to continue working even if I left in a hurry. Another advantage to me, is what some may consider a disadvantage. I like a loose and impressionistic style and I actually prefer to paint without many detailed lines, etc. However, you really can get detail with pastels if you use harder brands and even pastel pencils. I've seen some photorealism done with pastels that are amazing. And finally, my favorite reason for using pastels is their vibrancy in color.... they seem to have color that is not achieved with other mediums. Pastel paintings also actually keep their color longer than other mediums. Most people get addicted when they start using them. Hope that helps. :)

      @@monetcafe Thanks for the reply Susan. I've been trying to use them but always come away frustrated. If I had the luxury of personal tuition from you I'm sure you could convince me, but having to do it on my own means that, before long I'm more than ready to run back to my watercolours, inks and acrylics! Each to his own I guess.

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  5 лет назад +1

      I actually love watercolor myself. I did get frustrated at first with pastels at first too, but at least you have other mediums your are comfortable with. Many of my videos have lessons that are beneficial for all mediums so hopefully you will keep getting a benefit from them :)

    • @DaveGmn
      @DaveGmn 5 лет назад +1

      safi456, you can get most of the benefits of pastels without dust by using oil pastels. (These are different from oil sticks, which dry - oil pastels never dry out). I artist oil pastels easier to blend and to mix colors. As with chalk (soft) pastels, there are various brands, from the top of the line Sennelier (expensive) to Cray-Pas (cheap). Look for ones branded as "artist oil pastels." I use Mungyo from Korea - these are reviewed positively on web sales sites, as are a similar relatively low-cost oil pastels, Erengi, which I believe are from China.

    I would say to anyone who can’t see the point of pastels - get sanded paper then PERSEVERE. Once you get going you will find pastels sooooo forgiving. Make a mistake in watercolour and you are pretty much stuck with it,Pastels can be corrected, I’ve even been known to scrub a whole sheet of Pastelmat or sanded paper under the tap. I am a total convert. Susan, did you use ordinary clear gesso or one specific for pastels?

    You are a great instructor and your pastel paintings are inspiring. After watching your videos I want to try using soft pastels. However, I am afraid to do so because of the potential hazards of using soft pastels. Some state that one should not work with soft pastels unless one has a filtered air system in their studio, employs gloves and and a mask while painting, and entirely prevents exposure (including pets) to soft pastel dust. My "studio" is located in my bedroom and I also have a cat. Do you think my concerns about the potential dangers of using soft pastels are justified ?

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  5 лет назад +2

      I do know that some seem to have more of reaction to pastel dust than others. I have never had any issues in over 15 yrs of painting with them. Some artists wear a mask and use gloves just to be safe. Most of my dust just falls from the painting to a little homemade tray I use to catch it. I'm not sure if you will have any issues from the pastel dust, but I would hope that you can enjoy this wonderful medium. :)

    How do you store your paintings? I used a spray specific for pastel but as you said, it darkens the painting. Now my paintings are all over the place and I can´t touch them.

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  4 года назад +1

      You're right about the fixative darkening the paintings. I store mine in plastic bags from www.clearbags.com and also often store them between sketchbook pages with a sheet of tracing paper on top of each painting to protect them. Make sure the sketchbook and tracing paper are acid free. Here is a link where I made my own little pastel scrapbook :)

      I like small local galleries and often people buy just from me posting on instagram and Facebook. I really want to start an Etsy store as well as I think that can work well. : )

    Thanks for the amazing tutorial. Question: I will be new to pastels media, so do I have to worry about the toxic dust on the pastel before I buy some? Because most people on here are saying that the pastel dust could be very toxic if we blew the dust when we are working with pastels media? I'm so confused...:-(

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  2 года назад

      There are some who are concerned about the toxicity of pastels. Personally I’ve never had a problem along with many other pastel artist who have been painting for years. I find that my pastel dust typically falls right below my painting and as long as there’s not a lot of air current in the room there’s not a lot of dust floating around. Never blow your painting though and if you’re concerned about pastels on your hands, some people wear gloves and there’s another product called “gloves in a bottle” that works quite well. Hope that helps and again I’ve never had a problem.

    How much blending do you do? When you blend less with your fingers is that how you are able to keep the lines of the picture sharp?

    I enjoyed this lesson. I have one question. Can you use the technique to tint the surface if the surface is lightly sanded?

    I’m really having trouble with a lot of dust on my surface. I am using watercolour paper 140 pounds. Is it a problem with my pastels? Have they dried out?

    Are chalk pastels and soft pastels same? And can I draw with pastels on a watercolor paper without gesso?

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  4 года назад +1

      Yes, they are the same thing, but the term "soft pastels" is the one commonly used among artists. And you can use pastels on watercolor paper with no gesso, but you can get a great application and not much layering. Pastels need some "tooth" or "grit" to hang on to. I like to paint on unsanded papers, but I know that i'm limited with my layering. I like to sketch with soft pastels that are a bit harder in consistency, like Prismacolor Nupastels. Hope that helps :)

      🙂 🙂 🙂 ❤, @trinacerk7608 I always use a colored surface or apply an under painting. It's not required, but in general that's what I do. Hope that helps. Happy painting!

      It usually only takes 5-10 minutes, but you can shoot it with a blow dryer if you're impatient like me... lol.

    Fantawesome video! If tinted paper ( textured/ smooth)is used do we need to treat it with anything first? Thanks a ton again 🙏😍😊

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  5 лет назад

      Jayashree Shenoy you can work directly on the tinted paper, but you have to apply something to make the pastels hold to it. That’s why I use the clear gesso before I start the painting.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😊
