This looks like a fun exercise to try once I get my sketchbook rolling! Speaking of that, I wanted to say thank you, should you ever see this comment. I came across your videos a few days ago and something in the way you explain things reminded me that art is supposed to be fun. It's always been part of my life but somewhere along the way, I lost my own artistic voice and barely even noticed. Your videos showed me this and I am now on a mission to correct it! I became afraid to just let go, to experiment, TO PLAY! So... thank you for bringing that spark back to me, Jess. It means more than I could ever put into words.
i watch a ridiculous number of art videos and tutorials and this is the first one in a while that really makes me want to take up brushes and pencils and start practicing again. Thank you for this inspiring video.
At 76 it was a great reminder ….especially because lately I’ve been documenting my environment and culture…which means I’ve been painting little tiny figures in the greater images…thanks!
Jess you have no idea hoy much your videos help me, and I wanted to thank you, sometimes I just want to be lying in my bed, but as soon as I see your videos I want to get up immediately to paint and try new things, THANK YOU✨❤️
My dear friend, the beauty of your art and work cannot be described with any words. I enjoyed seeing your work very much. You deserve millions of subscribers and I will be with you. Shine bright, my dear friend.❤
These are great ideas. Thank you for sharing them. Drawing people while Urban sketching is always a challenge. I would love to see the photo references you are using. I think it would help clarify your purposes behind your paint strokes and shadow shapes. Thanks Jess!
You make it look so easy. My people look horrible. Proportions are all off, and usually they have stunted growth! But every time I try to fix it they look worse. Ugh. It’s so intimidating that I stop and just go back to my faithful landscapes. I do remember a time when even perspective in landscapes seemed so hard, so I’m hoping it’ll change. I should devote a small sketchbook to nothing but people! Oh and just a funny side note, I clicked on this video after seeing the thumbnail. As I began watching I saw your hands and right away it clicked. Those pretty fingernails Oh that’s Jess Karp! 😂 that’s when I recognized your voice.
Wow thank you so much!!! I am sure they do not look horrible - sometimes we can be a bit hard on ourselves. I have faith in you ♥️ thanks for your support and sweet words ✨
Hi Jess. I love the idea. I recently started studying the anatomy of the human body in drawing and I had some problems drawing people. This clip arrived right on time. Also, I've been in an art block recently and I think something new like this will help me. Thanks a lot.
I was struggling a lot while sketching people but now I learnt a lot of new things from your video which I will surely incorporate while sketching people 😊
Thanks for the video Jess ! I'm struggling to drawing people on location (they always move so fast ! ), I will try to think more with silhouette ! The ability to memorize quickly a moving pose will probably come with training ! 😊
I tried this today and it was such a great exercise! I always think that painting will take too much time and it's so complicated but I was able to enjoy it and learn.
Thank you for showing us this exercise, I will try it in my sketchbook. I'm a young artist and I really like your work, you give me motivation to persue my dream. You're work is trully amazing ! :) ( Sorry if my English is not really good, I'm french)
Everyone in the comments have already appreciated the video and hard/smart work of yours .. Nothing else is left for me to say .. basically you never ever disappoint us!!! We loveeeeee your art and you. THANK YOU for uploading!!🫂😁
There are great videos. Then there are those that up my art. I have not tried this, but I cannot wait. I love your channel. These came out so beautifully. Could you try doing 1 silluet in big and make a painting from it please? Thank you ❤.
Lovely video Jess, I am discovering new techniques working with soft pastels! Blocking in the major areas then refining my image and deciding on how far to go into details. Thank you for sharing these techniques and your amazing artworks with us.
I appreciated this video so much. It is so so so so helpful to hear someone discussing what exercises and techniques they use while being able to just watch them paint. A lot of people make videos with in-depth discussions about what’s on their pallet etc. and those are great and I appreciate it- but something about this format just really clicks with me on a level that nothing else ever has including some of the art classes I took. As nice as it would be to go back to school, one of the big benefits of RUclips is the fact that the student, so to speak, gets to benefit from the teaching style that best suits them.
Seems like this might work pretty well with ink brush/markers as well if you start with light tones. I may have to try it to get me kickstarted back into doing some stuff.
Bloody YT, I've been interested in watercolor, ink drawings etc for a few years and only today do I get suggestion for your amazing content. I watched a few videos, they really top shelf.
It’s like magic to see how you go from a shadow silhouette to bring a character to life, especially enjoy the last sketch because the contrast of the other characters with the girl in process was great, you are always an inspiration jess
got to say I am overwhelmed with your skill.i am a big fan of drawing and painting visually but don't have the confidence to try this.Well done a great insight
Lots of love to you! Thank you so much for making it so simple and easy! You are god gifted! Love dear!❤❤❤.... Teachers even don't tell the simple techniques. They intentionally keep it complex.
Love it!!! I am usually an ink and graphite guy as I am hesitant (not confident with color mixing) to try painting. My few experiences were infuriating as I spent so much time, usually started off pretty good imo, but turns into a blobby mess before I give up and toss it in the trash. Never really thought about starting out with black and white; so I'm inspired to give it a try. 💙
The problem I have with paint is that I can’t get the fine definition I can with other mediums. It’s tough to control the water and absorption into the paper. This definitely needs a lot of painting skills to pull off. Be warned.
Jess! I learn so much from watching your videos! Thank you so much for all the time and hard work that you put into bringing use such FANTASTIC and PROFESSIONAL content. Your personality is so Charming and Adorable! Your Art is AMAZING! God Bless you Jess!
Can’t believe how inspiring this is…I love seeing the product of what people love in life…just came across your channel and am truly astounded!!! Amazing person!!!
Whoaaaaa. I've never seen a tutorial about drawing or painting people like this! I like it! It looks like a fun exercise to do! Thank you! I wish I had your creative minddddd
Really wish you had the reference photos posted. It’s difficult to see your process without it.
Your fans really appreciate how you discuss your needed materials before you start. Most artists don’t do that.
Thank you! I’m so happy you find it helpful

That's wonderful.
Fantastic, easy and very realistic.

The way she “draws” with paint is absolutely phenomenal….great content 😳👍🏾
painting is drawing with color
Eternally enamored with your style
Thanks! This technic is fantastic, and comes with happy discoveries some times 😅
Thanks! Awesome!
At 76 it was a great reminder ….especially because lately I’ve been documenting my environment and culture…which means I’ve been painting little tiny figures in the greater images…thanks!

I love the way you use gouache in a more watery style closer to watercolour, it looks really fun! 😮
It is! THanks :)
That's dope. You're dope! I also enjoy doing these quick figure sketches in watercolor. It's amazing how you manage to keep the poses so lifelike
Thank you!!
