This looks like a fun exercise to try once I get my sketchbook rolling! Speaking of that, I wanted to say thank you, should you ever see this comment. I came across your videos a few days ago and something in the way you explain things reminded me that art is supposed to be fun. It's always been part of my life but somewhere along the way, I lost my own artistic voice and barely even noticed. Your videos showed me this and I am now on a mission to correct it! I became afraid to just let go, to experiment, TO PLAY! So... thank you for bringing that spark back to me, Jess. It means more than I could ever put into words.

You make it look so easy. My people look horrible. Proportions are all off, and usually they have stunted growth! But every time I try to fix it they look worse. Ugh. It’s so intimidating that I stop and just go back to my faithful landscapes. I do remember a time when even perspective in landscapes seemed so hard, so I’m hoping it’ll change. I should devote a small sketchbook to nothing but people! Oh and just a funny side note, I clicked on this video after seeing the thumbnail. As I began watching I saw your hands and right away it clicked. Those pretty fingernails Oh that’s Jess Karp! 😂 that’s when I recognized your voice.

I appreciated this video so much. It is so so so so helpful to hear someone discussing what exercises and techniques they use while being able to just watch them paint. A lot of people make videos with in-depth discussions about what’s on their pallet etc. and those are great and I appreciate it- but something about this format just really clicks with me on a level that nothing else ever has including some of the art classes I took. As nice as it would be to go back to school, one of the big benefits of RUclips is the fact that the student, so to speak, gets to benefit from the teaching style that best suits them.

Love it!!! I am usually an ink and graphite guy as I am hesitant (not confident with color mixing) to try painting. My few experiences were infuriating as I spent so much time, usually started off pretty good imo, but turns into a blobby mess before I give up and toss it in the trash. Never really thought about starting out with black and white; so I'm inspired to give it a try. 💙

The problem I have with paint is that I can’t get the fine definition I can with other mediums. It’s tough to control the water and absorption into the paper. This definitely needs a lot of painting skills to pull off. Be warned.
