Such an important part of any painting project! Thanks Jason! And thanks for always making every lesson so easy to understand. I think another important element is making sure your original sketch is correct before you transfer it to your canvas or other surface. In my latest project I stumbled around for a long time because my original sketch wasn't quite right. I wasted 100s of hours because of this. So, I wrote out a checklist to assist me in getting it right the first time.
The rule of thirds is commonly used by both photographers and artists alike and a great method for composition . It may be something that you will come onto in later episodes but I have always had a strong interest in golden ratios and proportions . Perhaps it is a study for your more geometrically minded viewers but many of these kind of proportions were employed by old masters of the Renaissance . Keep up the good work Jason ...
Another simple yet effective demo - no overwhelming feeling with your videos, all the opposite... make me want pick up the brush and try! ;-) Looking forward for the next one. Great job and thank you for posting!
Thanks for watching and for the nice comment! I am not a figure artist, but many of the same principles would apply. Think about how the balance and shape of the figure are filling the space.
I would love to see one tutorial with all the rules in art. We keep hearing about rules and we don't have to keep them, but what are they?I know composition, kissing, rules of thirds. What else? Your tutorials are the best.
In most traditional painting executed in portrait mode, the focal point tends to be on the upper part of the canvas, which is exemplified by most of Bouguereau's paintings. It wouldn't make sense to have an enormous unused spaced with the focal point at the bottom. Can you give any examples of painting where the focal point is at the right lower corner? I can't think of any. Nice video, thanks!
While there are no hard and fast rules for art, you are right. For vertically oriented canvases the focal point tends to be in the center or top center. I will do another composition video at some point and talk more about it. Thanks!
@Fabrizio. The focal point being in the lower right doesn't mean there's an entire unused portion of space. It just gives more area to move the eye throughout the composition. So too if the focal point is in the upper right. To my eye though, this tends to make the composition top heavy and thus unbalanced. However, when done correctly, this can make for beautiful composition as well.
Thanks for watching! I have never used the water mixable oils. I am a traditionalist at heart! LOL I have heard they handle slightly differently than regular oils.
Thanks! I had a picture that I hated the way it turned out- and didn’t know why, until after seeing this, I cut 1/3 of the left off, and now I like it. LOL 😂
I have had a lot of problems with compozation in my works, leather I realized that left handed people , like me have a lot of difficulties in that becouse of functionality of our brain , anyway it's good to see your videos I'm sure that a loot of people are learning a lot of them.
Excellent points, as usual. Composition is essential to a good picture!, painting or drawing.
