    • @shenanitims4006
      @shenanitims4006 4 месяца назад +40

      Don’t get intimidated. Doing things like this daily/habitually, WILL improve your drawing ability. Think of any of your hobbies - you’re a lot better at it now than you were when you started. He doesn’t mention it here, but one way it’ll help is you’ll try drawing something and fail. That’s how we learn. But you’ll still want to depict it, so you’ll look at the failure and deconstruct it - “it was looking good here, and then… alright, that’s where I lost the plot.”
      So don’t be intimidated. I mean, this is a diary/journal. You’ll be the only person looking at it.

      You are not going to draw much with that perspective. I think the idea is to enjoy yourself. There is no better or more perfect way to do it. It’s a process. Not a competition.

      You can respark it, don't worry! It does help to aim for small things, like quick sketches, or swatching, or making a pattern, or playing with only a few colors. Anything with a low threshold. Then your joy and inspiration will grow again.
      If not doing art stems from having too many things to do, then you might have more things to do than suits you. Then it can be really rewarding to see what you can do to simplify your life (e.g. do less, own less, skipping things that are less important to you, doing unpleasant tasks together with a friend so they are much more fun, etc).

    Danny, this is my introduction to your channel. After watching the 1st time, I had to go back & stop the video at each image from the journal you are showing. I see much more than simple drawings--these are accomplished illustrations & watercolors. And what I could read of your hand-written 'text' shows the kind of life I dearly wish I could lead, going to The Frick & The Met with art friends, traveling from NY to FL, throwing parties for 50 guests. You talk about Egon Schiele, Lou Reed, & Bowie. You quote poetry referencing Bangladesh. I wish I were in your world. I can't imagine making images from the life I am leading now, which is 180 degrees from yours. I feel like the inspiration here is about finding/figuring out/making a better life, a life that can give rise to pages echoing what you say & see here. I will definitely return.

      You can make art wherever you are. Recently I have set myself the challenge of making a drawing of whatever happens to be in front of me, no matter how uninteresting it seems. It's surprising what you notice as you draw and how interesting and even beautiful everything becomes. You don't have to travel to NY or FL to do that. Surprisingly, as you continue with the habit of drawing "everything" (a cup, a chair, a lamp, a bush, a tree, your own mirror image) you will meet people who not only admire what you do, but also meet others who are creative, and you can have your own group of "art friends". Try it. You might like it.

    Just want to say, when you said use pen, at first, I didn't dare try. Then I simply sketched the tea mug in front of me and it came out OK. Not the dimensions. Just the feel of it on paper.
    Hopefully, tomorrow I'll try the rest of the challenges.

    Thankyou so much for this challenge. Ive been babysitting my 8 year old twin granddaughters every Tuesday for a month. Last Tuesday I showed them this challenge and one of them was quite excited to do it. So Georgia and I have been texting our drawings to each other. It has been a wonderful bonding experience. It has also got me drawing again after 8 months where I have felt unable to draw since my mum passed away. 😍 Thankyou. Looking forward to our next challenge.

    This is a great idea Danny. I love this. I’ve been trying to do morning pages writing by Julia Cameron and would start and stop go back ended up trying to keep up with a drawing journal too and painting acrylic canvases. and I quit everything. Just too much. I needed to scale down and get into one habit first. And this idea might actually work better for me. Your idea is hitting me in the right creative place. I thank you.

    At one time I did this and I love looking at the few books I’ve finished, But now it has morphed into mainly a do list and writing down the weather, but I have a new nice 9 x 12 sketchbook that I have been thinking about combining several elements of my life all in one book. For instance I have a separate little notebook for my prayer journal and I I need to start keeping it together with a journal and in my Bible study fellowship this year we are studying Revelation and I think I would like to make some notes about that. I’m always taking an online class and making notes on when I signed up and my password and what we did and I think that’s a good idea to just combine all of these things in one book and I might start this because I’m coming to the end of, a sketchbook that I’ve been keeping for several months. I may accept your challenge. I have a great event to add on Saturday -.a great grand is having a first birthday party and has taken a few steps but my entries always take longer than 15 minutes!!

    Я веду дневник, помимо этого у меня есть много тетрадочек, куда я записываю свои идеи и планы, я делаю иногда рисунки в дневнике, но чтобы сделать его иллюстрированным - такая мысль мне не приходила в голову.

      As a sketchbook addict, what I've found is that when I get a sketchbook that I don't like that much for whatever reason, the texture, the weight, etc... that I'm much more free in that book than one I love or that was expensive. I'm gonna finish it anyway because I hate to waste money but I'll experiment a lot more and I'm not upset if something doesn't come out "nice". Sketching and journals are not meant to be perfect or internet flip worthy. That's not their purpose but it is easy to get that into your head. So I'd say get yourself a cheap journal, from the dollar store even and go to town until you feel like you're ready for the nice journal. Perfect is the enemy of good and good is the enemy of getting started.

    Thanks for sharing your thought process and sketchbook illustrations. I am a person who has no art skills but started to write down my ideas with stick figures about three years ago. I got better over time and some ideas made it into print. One is still hanging in the air to be bought by a famous illusionist and many others will never see the light for audiences to appreciate them. But you are right, taking down notes for our own purpose can be a great way to reduce stress. I consider myself to be a dreamer and have never really enjoyed being in the spotlight. Ironically though, I have held down many sales jobs that I truly disliked. But attention finds me where ever I go despite me trying to be obscure. And, so today, I will be visiting some places were I am going to embrace and accept my life’s purpose in which I have been running away from my entire life. 😀
