I really appreciate when an artist shares their sketchbook because it’s a visual diary and most of the time more personal than their other work. Thank you, I hope you continue sharing when you can.
Thanks so much for the comment, and I agree. Its really interesting to see the things that people make when they do not expect it to be seen. Im going to be making regular uploads here, maybe every week, and shorts every day or so.
Really enjoyed your tour. I sometimes sketch and take photographs and you’re so right about drawing and memory - one of my drawings will bring back memories in a way that my photographs never do.
thanks so much for watching. Yes. I think its probably the length of time it takes. the image and its associations are more burned-in to the brain... maybe
The first page is glued to the end page that is glued to the cover, this is what is holding the book together, it is very common in hard blind books. Love your Work!
Oh I've enjoyed this! I've recently taken to swiping dark acrylic over the pages that make me feel the ick. It resonated with me when you admitted to the 'pool scene' embarrassment! Beautiful sketchbook.
Oh absolutely. I agree. So glad you liked it. I actually posted a second Sketchbook Tour a few days ago :) . Also some painting videos in the works too...
Love your work and thank you for the flip through! Totally agree how interesting it is that a sketchbook can bring you back to where you were and what you were feeling in a way words can’t. Very well articulated!
Спасибо, с удовольствием посмотрел на ваши воспоминания. Я тоже рисую, и иногда записываю туда смешные фразы своих детей - потом весело разглядывать. По 10-15 скетчбуков в год. Удачи
Thank you for sharing. Just wonderful❣I enjoyed your commentary as well: 15:14-16:13 Yes, I think so, too. And then at 16:14 I quite agree with that assessment🤣Such a cool tour. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.
Thanks for sharing your “sketchbook” (with perfect oil paintings, Wow?!). I personally prefer a lot of “studies” to the final paintings as I really like the bold character that the studies have in comparison to the perfectly pretty oil paintings but that’s just my taste not at all a negative comment (pls don’t get mad), showing a sketchbook is such a privilege! Thanks so much 🙏and will sub to see more! Lovely narration as well ✌🏽☺️
Haha. Im not mad at all to hear that. Glad you enjoyed it. I wouldn’t say they were perfect oil paintings though. Just a different kind of study. I have another sketchbook filmed and narrated too. Will post that after a little oil painting one 😊
Really happy to have stumbled upon this video! Your work is great, I love seeing how you capture these moments in time with ink to paper. I’m currently seeking to rekindle my love for art and you scratched that itch! lmao
Oh thanks so much. Just keep at it and you'll fill it and be on to the next one before you know it. Try to make it a daily thing, even if just 10mins. Make it easy.
Thanks so much! So at the moment i am using Noodlers Heart of darkness ink in my fountain pen and ink the ink wash (literally just one drop in water). The fineliners are staedtler. I dont care tooo much about the ink choice other than it needs to be waterproof and nice and black. Quite a lot of cheaper fineliners arent waterproof and can be really ruined by an ink wash.
Yeah that was my drawing table. Its an old architects drawing table with the parallel rule slide. I like it but have always been a bit frustrated that it doesnt go entirely vertical.
I've seen people use oil paint in sketchbooks before but the only time I tried it, the page took forever to dry enough so I could close it, so the book couldn't be used for an age! Do you use alkyd oils or some other method to get the paint to dry quicker?
Hey. I get this question a lot but i dont think i do anything special. I sometimes gesso the page but sometimes paint raw. I dont really use any medium aside from a little liquin - which does speed up drying slightly. I just cant say its ever been a problem. Paints are a mix of michael harding, rembrandt, and gamblin- if that helps. Maybe you just paint thicker than i do?
@@ncunning maybe - I mean I've only used oils a couple of times in my life so I had no real idea what I was doing! Also it was stone paper, so maybe that meant it was less absorbent. Guess I'll have to do some experimenting, but that initial drying time put me off a bit 😅
@amberdreams_0 ahhh oh i see. Yeah im not surprised the stone paper took a while to dry! The absorbency of paper (and gesso) definitely speeds things along!
Yeah i usually gesso the pages (although sometimes i go raw). I have a few sketchbooks on rotation so ill just use another one for a week until its touch dry. I have another video actually talking about this 👀
Because this isnt a watercolour sketchbook the paper will warp if you use too much water, so I just use watercolour for little bits of colour over a drawing. Less is more
This is actually really good, seems so effortless. There are videos with 1 mil views with kindergarden drawings and swatches on youtube. This is a real, skilled artist. I have a question, after how many days do you close the sketchbook after you paint an oil portrait? In my experience, after 2 days it s safe if u dont paint alla prima, not very thick, but i m still using some baking sheet just in case.
Thanks so much. Honestly im pretty blown away it has this many views anyway! Definitely will be posting more. Honestly it depends. sometimes I can close it after a couple of days, sometimes I have to wait a week. It depends on the temperature, the pigments used, and how much gesso. I have a sketchbook with ONLY oil paintings in it, and the only trouble ive had is when two oil painting pages are pressing against each other. That does seem to cause them to stick and peel off. Its not totally uninteresting though. Its good to lose some control sometimes. Thanks again!
Sir, do you seal the paper of the sketchbook with gesso or primer before using the page for oil painting? If you do it then do you plan beforehand which pages of the sketchbook will be used for oil painting and seal them accordingly?
Hey thanks for the comment. Yeah I usually do seal it (but not always). I just use some gesso or some transparent acrylic primer. I dont plan it out in advance - just maybe the day before ill prime it. Let it dry overnight and then paint in it the next day. Often i will be trying out new sealing techniques too. Its a sketchbook so its for experimenting 🙏
i think this is so cool! If you don't mind me asking, I always get worried about using oil paints in notebooks because of the drying time. Is that something you've had an issue with? How do you work around it?
Ah you just have to wait a little bit. If its oil on the unprimed paper it dries pretty fast, maybe 48 hours. I only really do it if i know i can leave it open on the shelf for a day or two. For example I am currently doing a challenge to finish a sketchbook in a month... so no oil painting in that.
Its a Moleskine Art Sketchbook. You should be able to find them easily. I didnt know the weight but I googled it for you and its apparently 165gsm. Its pretty good, but it can only take so much wetness. You have to be pretty light with anything water based. no watercolour wet in to wet paintings for sure.
@@HarshaVardhan-ir5dn sometimes yes. Sometimes no. If you dont, the oil seeps into the page and is visible on the other side. When i do its just a bit of transparent acrylic binder or some gesso
No need to apologise. Im happy to answer questions. I sometimes used a little bit of liquin, which does speed up drying a little. otherwise just let them dry naturally. A side note that a hairdryer does speed up the drying process of oil paint. Technically oil paint "cures" through oxidation rather than "dries" through evaporation. Using other fast drying alkyd mediums would definitely speed things up if thats important for you.
Your figure drawing skill is amazing, but how do you make every page so good? why aren't there any scribbled messes mixed in? Like spilled paint and crooked faces 😂 you're setting the standards for sketchbooks so high. I've been trying multiple styles in mine that I've seen other artists do. Anything completely different from the way I normally do things but sadly no great masterpieces 😂 but maybe some new tricks will stick.
Thanks so much. I dont think EVERY page is good though. Also worth noting some of the pages I painted over etc. A lot of the time the reason why i do an oil painting in the sketchbook is to cover something that didnt work out! I dont want to set a standard though. I think sketchbooks should be as curated or as messy as you want them to be. Your sounds good. Keep at it!

great drawings brother
Thank you!
Great sketches! Very inspiring. I need to start using ink in my sketchbook, for now I’m using ballpoint pens. They’re fine but variety is nice.
You should, its a great thing to do. I love ballpoint though. people can do some amazingly varied things with ballpoint.
