Firstly because the way you speak is so calm, pleasant and the English is easy to understand (since I'm not a native speaker). This is a pretty tall order. I am 70 yo. I always wanted to draw and paint but even stick figures failed me. Last year I started watercolor which I am terrible but it soothes me. I attempted to draw a little every night but became very discouraged. One thing is I love to learn! I am going to give this a try. Thank you.

Are you drawing with or without reference? If you're using reference, you can use the grid method as a sort of in between step or bridge. Gradually reduce the number of grid over time. Alternatively, you can break anything into basic 3d shapes like spheres and boxes. Then you can get the details later on.

This video makes me very excited. I remember in 3rd grade when we were told to get a leaf, trace it in the paper, then color it green. Everyone got a perfect score but me. So politely I ask my teacher what I did wrong. She replied that the leaf I drawn has brown on it instead of green. In my mind "but there is a brown part of the leaf." That is when I knew that following the instruction of the teacher is more important than being original and creative.

I believed that I'm unable to draw, because of my vision defect, that makes comprehending 3d a bit harder. But you inspired me in the first part of the video and now I'm motivated that I will be able to draw better. Now I see why my drawings weren't the best and now I wouldn't say thats because of vision deffect. In couple of days I will be having a lot of free time, so I will be watching, learning amd drawing a lot, so after summer break I will have my bookshelf full of drawings and my head full of mew things.
I want now just say that your learning method is really good and easy to stick with. Exercises are easy and you don't put too much theory, amd it's great, cause I don't need to know theory, I want to learn to draw. These tips also are really helpful. I'm really glad that I found this video.

Thank you so much! I started playing with watercolors less than a year ago and enjoy greatly just playing with color mixing and abstract pieces. At 70 I do not anticipate becoming an artist per se, but I feel simply enjoying myself and making incremental improvements is enough. Never having learned to draw has been a barrier to advancement with my watercolor. I have convinced myself that I cannot draw, which I recognize is ridiculous. Your simple introduction to drawing was exceedingly helpful and I look forward to the rest of the series.

I was thinking about a fence, a brick wall, a rainbow. The mug seems almost more complex, but a relatively simple shape! 👍

    Hi Danny,
Thank you so much for putting this out.
The calm, slow pace are pure gold.
Your guidance here is not only technical but there is a kind of mentoring since you comment about some possible thoughts that might emerge during a solo drawing session.
    And you speak from experience.
    I am delighted.

I am so excited about this!!! I know there are a ton of videos online showing you how to draw but this way I can get all of the lessons in one place. I am confident that by the end I will be able to illustrate the children's books that I want to write. Thanks for committing to this.

Hi Danny…. I love your videos and I’m a little embarrassed that I’m now actually listening to them. On #1 lesson I drew the mug. What I realized that it wasn’t my cup. I’m left handed so tried to draw a mug for myself…..it was very difficult?? Finally I was successful. I photoessays but I can’t see how to send it. Glad you’re here.

I really love these kinds of videos, i already have pretty good experience of drawing and started very early, but it's still really relaxing to just hang along for the ride, going back to basics and just drawing a mug or two :)
    Thanks dude!

Thanks. I especially appreciate the reminder to enjoy the process, which I also heard through prayer. Art school added an element of agony, with the time pressure of deadlines & the severe grading in a harsh, boot camp atmosphere. I just shake my head, what they make of art at that school. Now, I can resume art & drawing, after a break, while actually enjoying the process. This reminded me to be calm, & was worth the time to watch for that gain.

Just found your channel and have subscribed as I love the way you speak and encourage us to have a go. I'm 61 and used to be good at art when I was at school but I've not done any art since then and would love to have a go now that I have a bit more time in my life.
