How an INDUCER & STUFER affect Berkeley Jet Drive clearances

  • I installed a stuffer and inducer in my Berkeley 12JG jet drive a while back. Now the shaft for this Berkeley pump needs to have a new register machined on it to accommodate the inducer. My pump had a new 17-4 shaft already set up to my jet drive and impeller combination. So I sent that shaft in to be machined for the inducer. The vendor ended up exchanging shafts with me. They kept my old shaft and sent me an entirely new one. Well, I didn’t catch this till much later once I got around to installing it into the pump. Well, the new shaft moved my impeller rearward nearly ¼ inch. Because of this, I cannot get my bowl installed because the impeller is sitting too far rearward and interfering with the flange. It's an honest mistake that is neither the vendor's nor my fault. In this video, I will talk through the problem I encountered with the inducer and how I checked and measured my shaft, so I could have the issue corrected. While at it, I also needed to have my bowl milled out to accept the stuffer. Also, I will touch on the clearances within the jet drive and how I measured them.

    About AutoTechNick:
Growing up in rural Oregon, I was always around Hot Rods & Race Cars. I imagine my early exposure to this culture ignited a spark of interest in cars, which remains my passion.
🎓 I am a proud Alumni of Wyoming Technical Institute, where I studied Automotive Technology, Performance Engine Building & Street Rod Fabrication. In addition to “WyoTech,” I graduated from the BMW Service Technician Education Program, more commonly known as BMW S.T.E.P.
🏎️ I spent nearly ten years working in various BMW dealerships as a Master Technician. After a move back home to the PNW, I found myself no longer servicing German-made machines but now working with Italians. I spent nearly another ten years as a Ferrari Master Technician & Shop Foreman at a local Ferrari dealership.
🏆 Ferrari selected me as one of 12 technicians worldwide to compete in the “Ferrari Testa Rossa Awards” for four years consecutively. Finishing in 3rd place in 2016, & in 2019 I was able to place in 1st, winning the competition & earning the title of the “Top Ferrari Technician in the World!”
🚀 As my time with Ferrari came to an end, a new career path awaited me…. Aerospace. I am currently working at Blue Origin, helping to build & develop the BE-3PM and BE-3U rocket engines.
With my new career path, I needed an outlet for my automotive passion, thus the reason for this channel…

Thanks for the detailed description here!! I'm planning on building a jet boat but don't know much about these jet drives, thanks for the thorough description of the rebuild process.

Hey thanks for the detailed description. Lots of detailed work to get it right. Just had to rebuild mine but other than the inducer I just went with a stock set up. Its a 20 foot sled and have been happy with performance. Im really not sure you are in any more danger with the tighter tolerance set up. Years ago my friend had our joint boat out and it ended up locked up tight. I pulled it apart and the bowl was full of rocks. About a half a coffee can full. One small rock had got between the impeller and wear ring, hauled up some aluminum from the impeller and locked it up tight. He never would tell me what happened! So in my mind, it may not matter that much how tight the tolerance is, get the wrong or "right". sized piece in there and your in trouble. I just take very good care of where my intake is! Really curious to see how it runs with all your improvements! Remember, there's no substitute for cubic inches!!!

Bryan, for sure. I certainly opened Pandora’s box once I had this pump apart. But that’s just how it goes sometimes.
We share similar trains of thought on the rocks and tolerances. I am not terribly worried about it. A little caution and common sense on where your running the boat will go a long ways.
Sounds like you buddy needed a minor recalibration after borrowing your boat. 😉

@@AutoTechNick He got it! Long story but he at least he didnt leave me overnight to freeze! Do you have any performance data prior to all the work you've done?
