In our last jet boat video, we completed the touch-up and repair work on the bottom side of the boat. I corrected some damage and reapplied gelcoat, primarily focusing on the keel area. With that work done, this marks a big milestone in the project. I no longer need the boat leveled out on jack stands. Heck, I can actually get the boat back onto the trailer! This means I can finally get the boat out of the shop and free up my lift-which is huge becaus...

In this video, I dive deep into the restoration of a 1988 BMW E28 M5, focusing on the complex Euro bumper conversion. While the front Euro bumper swap was straightforward, the rear conversion presented significant challenges. Upon arrival at my shop, this classic BMW M5 showed signs of rust, particularly around the rear bumper area. After removing the North American spec bumper, the extent of t...

One seat looks wider than the other
Never had a problem looking at the distributor pic and lining, stabbing and firing. You must be lining the rotor up with the actual cylinder or something else.
Theses are things that jet boat owners don’t think of when doing a full restoration. Greatly appreciate
Seems like you are OCD when it comes to the hardware restoration and getting it exactly correct but neglecting the boat’s structural integrity. Hmmm maybe you are not exactly correct about water not mattering on the inside of all boats, but you had to rebuild the entire inside of this boat from the result of effects from water penetration into the wood fibers and destroying it all. I don’t follow the reason why you restored everything with wood? Not composite materials. I assume it was in a prior post? My experience with boat restoration projects is not to use any wood unless you want to be redoing it some day. If you are going to restore any boats and use wood you must treat it with penetrating epoxy resin. In addition to the entire wood structure you must also remove any hardware that you install and treat all penetrations in the wood with penetrating epoxy resin.
Sounds smart to me 👍
If you are messing with your spark plug wires arond....you are not stabbing the distributer on the right tooth....you must always think about the fact that the rotor wont be in the right position till the oil pump drive lines up with the oil pump and the distributer is all the seated....set the crank on top dead center not 20 degrees! Your engine only needs timming at 6 degrees if you are carburated and non computerized....if you are closer to 0 it starts easier...set your timming after it warms up!!!
Nice work. I’ve been considering this exact same project for months on mine, and was very surprised for it to turn up a new result after many times of googling! Any chance you’d sell your prototype strip from this video once you have the new one? I’d be interested in it if so…
That is what ive done for a long time especially in the gm and dodge rear distributor and fords , mopars, buick, Cadillac, AMC, still do the same thing put the crank few degrees before top dead center cause when sliding distributor
Thanks for the great videos. I'm in the process of reflooring my 78 Eliminator. These videos are essential for guys like me doing it for the first time. Thumbs up.
Shit like this is a prime example why I don't run carb or distributors. 😁 I love my early LS engines cable driven throttle and a PCM just to control ignition and fuel
Looking forward to the 355 work, but must say, miss the boat stuff..
19:18 I’m like 😱there’s more assembly to do! I’d for sure scratch it but I can tell you’re very meticulous so it’ll be ok. You know I’m 99% sure nobody has put a Ferrari engine in a jet boat, just saying! Really… worlds best FERRARI tech!!! Awesome 👏 No wonder you obsess over the smallest details.
Yet another awesome video!
Something I did the other day. Took 2 of the harbor freight wooden dollies. Stole the casters. Took a couple scrap 1/4" plate and made two new solid dollies about 2x2' squares. Then took a couple old jackstands and welded them solid to the dollies. I used my trailer to setup the hydrostream in a 3-point hold. And also had the axle out of the trailer. Those now rolling jackstands went to the corners. And my modified jack up front let me turn that hull sideways in my shop. We have a drag-n-drive car coming in and that gives me the best room.
I felt a strange disturbance in the force recently, must have been when you decided to stop working on the boat??? I do have a boat question for you. What are you going to do for a trim gage for the diverter? I can only find one that has to attach to the diverter hydraulic cylinder? With my diverter (Exweld) I dont think I can attach it? Is there some other electronic way to do it???? Im thinking get the kit from CP. But use a linear actuator to move the arm on the sensor. Wire actuator to diverter control and use limit switches to control travel. Hit up button, actuator moves until it hits the limit switch and shuts off stopping gage travel, pump can keep running . hit down button, actuator moves again until limit switch is hit???? I believe I can build a nice aluminum box and put this under dash???? Your thoughts???
The peeling of the crash wrap was so satisfying, hope to meet and see you next summer
I cannot wait to get out on the water and spend some time with the local group! ~ Nick
Good stuff as always 👍
Much appreciated
What kind of pads are you using on your jack stands to protect the gel and fiberglass?
They are just harbor freight cheapies. Just search for Jack stand pads.
Watched because of the boat, but looking forward to the belt replacement video's Don't see a problem at all. Keep up the good work.
I love to hear it!!! I have lots of great stuff to share on the Ferrari world!
Great video
yes I go 10-12.
This is exactly what I do when I build mine. Usually fires off within a rotation after the fuel has been primed
Nick great job and like your channel. I have my kids first jet boat in my shop right now ready to gel coat soon and the only thing I am wondering is you were so close and even have a hoist, why not roll the boat over to do all this work? It makes it so much easier especially not crawling around on your back for hours on end. Looking forward to seeing the boat hit the water keep up the good work!
Fair question. I intentionally did not flip the boat over because I know myself all too well. If I were to do that, I would have turned the couple-day job into an entire redo of the bottom side. I just can't leave well enough alone. So, by keeping the boat upright, the repairs were just miserable enough to keep me from fussing with it forever... And it worked!! 🤣😂🤣 ~ Nick
@@AutoTechNick Fair enough, I just watched you rolling around on your back sanding thinking glad that’s not me 😅. We are spraying gel coat tomorrow on my sons boat and that was all I had planned to do but like you I couldn’t leave well enough alone and straighten out the keel and reshaped the entry in to the pump. 2 day job turned into 3 weeks!
How does changing the timing cause a problem with ignition wire routing?
That rust converter you sprayed on the floors is not going to stop anything!
Great job Nick. Beautiful.
Thank you
Anodizing is not just a surface coating it is impregnated deeper into the metal,, however nice work on all the lettering and painting...
I do that the same way since I was a kid.. You are a good mechanic/engine builder
I can’t wait to see this car completed. Once it’s fully put together and painted I think this will be a really clean look.
I'm with you. I cannot wait to see how the project turns out. ~ Nick
Here's a question, BBC On the distributor housing, not all housing are created equal. Have you ever experienced a low oil pressure scenario due to a smaller tolerance of the housing to the block inside the distributor housing bore? And what was the fix, o-ring at some interval at those two groves above the gear? I know I'm not the only one who has experienced this phenomenon.
Sweet ride
Did you degree the camshaft?
@@remowilliams2.031 yes
Wow the owner sounds like a pain in the ***, but the work looks amazing for where the car started!
🤣 the owner isn’t TOO bad 😉
It is your car and you can do what you want but in my eyes looks terrible.
@@M5-Porzellan It’s not my car, it’s for a client. So they have the final say here. I understand that it looks a bit odd. I’m not sure if that’s because it actually does, or if it’s because we are not used to seeing it without a plate, or if it’s because everything up front is unpainted and several colors. My final judgment will be made once I can see it on the car with the bumpers painted, car assembled and on the ground. The bright side to this, is that it is 100% reversible. So if we don’t like the look, it will be super simple to switch back to the factory setup. ~ Nick
I approve this method it works for me
Great work and a team effort!
Thank you
I never had a problem doing it the old way
Still proud of you for this accomplishment, my friend!
I can’t believe someone had to make a video on this? Lol 😂
Centrifugal and vacuum advances don’t advance timing till it’s running. Initial set up usually only 4 to 6 degrees before TDC. Seemed to fire right up years ago when did engine work?? Whatever works for you.
We had a 64 Dodge 2 ton truck old 318 engine. If advanced it too much, it would back fire like a shotgun blast.
I’ve got a 396 in my Chevelle. I didn’t grow up working on cars. So, I’m learning as I go. Questioning whether I should keep the 396bb or go with 454 or 502? Is the 396 a sleeper and more dynamic plus rare? Or, should I just consider going with a bigger block motor? Any thoughts and breakdowns on this topic are much appreciated! Awesome video by the way man. I’m learning lots from guys on here like yourself. Fascinating stuff
Nice educational content. As an old boomer direct and v-drive person I am learning new things. I am getting into the vintage 70s jet boats sort of like classic cars. They are few and young folks have never seen one. Newest project came with a jacuzzi golden eagle jet drive. Do you have any content on those?
Unfortunately I do not have any content covering the Jacuzzi jet drives. ~ Nick
Lol you just haven't done it a million times not a big deal #1 a correct firing order
COMING FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER DEGREED A CAM SHAFT, I DONT THINK HE KNOWS THAT HE'S EXPLAINING EXACTLY HOW YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO IT. PROFESSINALS BEEN DOING THIS FOR OVER 200 YEARS NOW, THIS MR. GOODWRENCH HERE, THINKS HE'S MADE SOME GROUND BREAKING INVENTION OF 20° IN TIMING BLUEPRINTS. IM JUST GONNA TELL HIM, I LEARNT THIS IN HIGH SCHOOL SHOP CLASS THE FIRST WEEK, CHAPTER 1- SBC-TIMING>101 YEAP.
Coming from some one who has never degreed a cam shaft
LMAO LMAO
Ha ha kids. Good job kid.
It depends on the camshaft aftermarket, stock cam 5 degrees set off of balance mark then put in distributer line up the stator stars put on cap it will start easily.
Love the rock engineering, you’re making our caveman ancestors proud!
🤣 gotta keep the project in budget!!!!
That's the way I've done for 50 years.
