  • Today we delve into the world of Gelcoat... or is it Gel Coat? Regardless, join me as I guide you through the meticulous process of elevating the classic 1979 Centurion Jet Boat to a condition better than new.
Having addressed major structural issues by replacing wood, stringers, transom, floors, and bulkhead, I've ensured a solid foundation. The fiberglass work and tabbing have undergone careful blending and smoothing for a flawless finish.
After months of meticulous preparation in the bilge, the time has come to breathe new life into this jet boat. Today's spotlight is on the application of custom color-matched gelcoat! Precisely matched to the boat's exterior, it guarantees a seamless and cohesive appearance.
In this video, witness the transformation as I experiment with a 3-color panel style layout for a unique aesthetic. Venturing into spraying gel coat for the first time, I've chosen a budget-friendly Amazon HVLP gun for the task. Get an insider's look at the substantial effort invested in masking to achieve clean lines and perfect color separation.
I'll also share insights into the difficulties and obstacles encountered along the way.
Despite my limited tangible experience with gelcoat, I'll draw on my expertise in custom paint. In a previous video, I conducted a gel coat test panel, and today, I'll leverage that valuable experience to craft a stunning finish on this Centurion Jet Boat.

    About AutoTechNick:
Growing up in rural Oregon, I was always around Hot Rods & Race Cars. I imagine my early exposure to this culture ignited a spark of interest in cars, which remains my passion.
🎓 I am a proud Alumni of Wyoming Technical Institute, where I studied Automotive Technology, Performance Engine Building & Street Rod Fabrication. In addition to "WyoTech," I graduated from the BMW Service Technician Education Program, more commonly known as BMW S.T.E.P.
🏎️ I spent nearly ten years working in various BMW dealerships as a Master Technician. After a move back home to the PNW, I found myself no longer servicing German-made machines but now working with Italians. I spent nearly another ten years as a Ferrari Master Technician & Shop Foreman at a local Ferrari dealership.
🏆 Ferrari selected me as one of 12 technicians worldwide to compete in the "Ferrari Testa Rossa Awards" for four years consecutively. Finishing in 3rd place in 2016, & in 2019 I was able to place in 1st, winning the competition & earning the title of the "Top Ferrari Technician in the World!"
🚀 As my time with Ferrari came to an end, a new career path awaited me…. Aerospace. I am currently working at Blue Origin, helping to build & develop the BE-3PM and BE-3U rocket engines.
With my new career path, I needed an outlet for my automotive passion, thus the reason for this channel…

It took A LOT of work to get to this point, but MAN and I happy with how it is turning out. Once I finish the touchups and the last bit of detail to the gelcoat in the bilge, I cannot wait to see how it will look!
Did I make the right choices with the locations and colors that I chose? Did you notice that the only color I left out is the dark brown?

Overkill? Hell yeah but what a work of art man! super cool, hopefully some younger people are watching and want to get dirty making things and working on stuff! Since kids have very few options of getting dirty in schools anymore, you tube is a great inspiration!
Oh and yeah my 39 year old 32 always needs work and learning a ton about glass work here!

Overkill is all I know 🤣. Is there any other way to do it?
I agree, I do not see much desire or interest in the younger generations wanting to build something of their own... ESP. in today's world of instant gratification. I was even surprised when my son expressed interest in getting an older muscle car to fix up! I jumped all over that!! I am stoked that he will be able to build something with his own hands!

I did a 21' Tahiti, new stringers, floor, transom, blue printed 455 and Berkley pump with Jetovator . Opened the closed bow for additional seating, all new wiring, all new anodized billet aluminum, custom windshield and all new custom interior. I thought I'd do another, but after watching your videos, I was reminded to NEVER DO IT AGAIN. Your doing a fantastic job, and she'll be a real head turner. Mine was, and that was back in 2000-2001. Taught all my kids how to ski and made a ton of memories. I have since moved on to sailing. No more high octane gas costs, and no more wrenching, well, a lot less of it. Good luck and keep up the top notch work!

Looks great! It’s been cool to see your progress from my point of view. I’m on 2 years of my 83 Barefoot Warrior rebuild. I know exactly how much work it takes. You definitely have me beat on bilge aesthetics for sure😂. Very original and excellent craftsmanship!

@@AutoTechNick Hopefully sometime this summer I can hit the water. I’ve finally finished all of the structural work and gelcoat repair, now moving on to interior and rigging for the next few months. Trying to decide if I want to keep the original setup or change it up a bit. It’s getting real at this point but still have a lot that I want to address before it’s all said and done.

Looks awesome after all that work I hope you don't use carpet to line rest of the floor. Carpet holds moisture and could cause problems in the future.

I will use carpet up to the rear seat. The bilge will remain gelcoat only.

Nick, Off topic, hope you can help, I cant seem to find what I need. Im looking for then shaft angle on a 12 jg in relation to the hull so I can set the correct engine alignment? I saw a diagram at some point over the 30 some years but cant find it? Thanks!!!

    • @AutoTechNick

Hi Bryan. Measuring from the bottom of the boat, you will want the keel level (0 degrees)... The mounting surface of the pump intake should be level with the keel. The mounting flange for the suction housing then should be at 4 degrees. (Most intakes have 4 degrees between these two surfaces built into them). So your pump shaft will be at 4 degrees. Your crankshaft centerline will be at 4 degrees to match. The crank centerline and pump centerline need a small height difference to give the u joints a slight amount of angle.
I am working on setting my pump intake now, video to follow soon.
Then I will be mounting the engine, again video to follow. I will cover these items in more detail in those videos.

@@AutoTechNick Nick thanks, I did finally get a hold a hold of someone at American Turbine who explained it to me. I had no I deal the crank and shaft has to be parallel? Learn something new every day. He said he built two pieces to help align it. an 8 inch disc that mounts to the crank and an 8 disc that mounts to the pump shaft, he gets them aligned perfectly so he knows crank and shaft are parallel , then he said to offset the engine a 16th while still keeping things parallel. I dont have a way to machine what he made , but I think I have a way that will be accurate enough. The thing has never been aligned properly since the first time I had to pull the engine many years ago. Never noticed any issues ??? Thanks you SOOO much for responding Cant wait to see your install. I pulled my engine a year ago to rebuild, do mostly to a horrible experience at a machine shop, I just now have the engine back and ready to install.

I'm not a fan of gelcoat over wood as it isn't waterproof and actually holds some water.
