  • Completing the installation of the new bulkheads, lateral supports, battery mount, and Place Diverter mount signifies the end of the woodworking stage of this jet boat rebuild. Finally! Since I moved the location of my stringers outwards, that necessitated some rework of the bulkheads. Rather than rework the existing bulkheads, I created more work for myself and made new ones. The existing bulkheads needed to be up to my standards! Now I took this opportunity to revamp the philosophy of all the woodwork and structure in the boat. I moved the main bulkhead rearwards and added an additional bulkhead in the front to support the bow. The spacing and location of the bulkheads ties in with my approach on my "engine box" and lateral supports. During the video, I explained my reasoning for why and what I was trying to achieve. The last tasks that I had to complete in the "woodworking" category were to build a provision for a battery mount, develop a mount for the Place Diverter hydraulic pump, and finally finish the rear fuel tank mounting blocks on the transom. Enjoy the video and share your thoughts in the comments!

    Growing up in rural Oregon, I was always around Hot Rods & Race Cars. I imagine my early exposure to this culture ignited a spark of interest in cars, which remains my passion.
    🎓 I am a proud Alumni of Wyoming Technical Institute, where I studied Automotive Technology, Performance Engine Building & Street Rod Fabrication. In addition to "WyoTech," I graduated from the BMW Service Technician Education Program, more commonly known as BMW S.T.E.P.
    🏎️ I spent nearly ten years working in various BMW dealerships as a Master Technician. After a move back home to the PNW, I found myself no longer servicing German-made machines but now working with Italians. I spent nearly another ten years as a Ferrari Master Technician & Shop Foreman at a local Ferrari dealership.
    🏆 Ferrari selected me as one of 12 technicians worldwide to compete in the "Ferrari Testa Rossa Awards" for four years consecutively. Finishing in 3rd place in 2016, & in 2019 I was able to place in 1st, winning the competition & earning the title of the "Top Ferrari Technician in the World!"

    What are your thoughts on how I addressed the bow in the stringer? How would you have gone about correcting that issue on your build?

    I truly enjoy watching your videos. I have a 1977 Eagle Pacific that my son and I are fixing to tack at just what you are doing. We are going to use Coosa Bluewater 26 Board instead of wood. This is a boat my Father bought new when I turned 16. So, the extra expense of the Coosa board will be worth it. I’ll hand it over to my son as his boat.
    Thanks for all of your hard work and educational videos.

      Thank you for the kind words.
      That is super cool that you plan to keep the boat in the family!! You will create some great memories building that boat with your son. I agree with you that the upgrade to Coosa will be worth it in the end! I wish you the best of luck with the project!

    I am going to try and tackle a race boat restoration after watching all your vids. It has a special family history and I never ever would have drug it out of the back if it wasn't for your vids. I might need some tech help lol . Gonna start tearing all the old glass and wood out soon.

    Everything is looking great! I can’t wait to hear how it rides for you. I’m planning on doing my rear bulkhead similar to yours. I never liked the old 2 piece design and my originals were just thrown in there with some chop and resin on a Friday after lunch break apparently. In my 83 I had quite a bit of flex in the bow going through rough or choppy water.
    That’s a kick in the pants on the stringer situation and was probably a sleep preventer. Things are always going to unexpectedly pop up, and we have to improvise. I would have probably done the same if shimming the port side wouldn’t work.

      🙏 Thank you. I know exactly what your saying about the original bulkheads. Mine were the same way.
      Yeah I was pretty annoyed with the stringer situation, but I quickly got over it and moved on. That section of the boat will have carpet, so it will be invisible once that is installed.

  • @PBZKYLE
    @PBZKYLE Год назад

    Top notch as always. It's all in the details! I assume you're going to carpet everything or gel it all inside. No one will notice the notches in the stringer but you. Seems like a great compromise. 👍

    • @AutoTechNick
      @AutoTechNick  Год назад +1

      I actually plan to run carpet up to the rear edge of the back seat. The plan for the engine box/ bilge is to gel coat it. But yes you are correct, the carpet will completely hide the notch in the stringer!

    Looking great! One note, be careful with that battery tray. Looks like you might have created a place for water to get trapped as there is no downhill drain unless your going to fully seal the left side that sits on the floor. Might also consider filling the void with foam to be safe...water moisture in trapped in that space can wreak havoc

    • @AutoTechNick
      @AutoTechNick  Год назад

      Yes! Absolutely. I was on the fence if I wanted to incorporate drains into the tray or seal it up. I chose to seal it up. The top plate is sitting pretty much right on the hull with no filler wood underneath. I bedded it in with the fiber filler and also glassed the outside so the box is watertight. I also was sure to glass in the inside of the wood framing for an extra element of water protection before installing the top plate.

    • @AutoTechNick

      Yes! Absolutely. Like most I am juggling a family with young kids and a full time job…. Then sprinkle a house renovation on top of that. So my time to get out in the shop to work on the boat and film is limited. I am doing the best that I can to keep the progress on the boat, and videos flowing.

    Question...
    Why not glass/resin the 1st bulkhead in completely then move on to installing the 2nd one? More room to work...
    By halfway doing both you created that tight space to work in...
    Was there a reason you did it that way? Did you mention it and I missed it?

    • @AutoTechNick
      @AutoTechNick  Год назад

      Yep…. I agree with you. Looking back at it, I could have saved myself some grief going about it that way. I was trying to minimize cure time on the glass, hence why I did them at the same time. But, truth be told it took me far longer than I anticipated to tab them in. If I did one at a time, like you suggested, it woulda been easier. And in the end I think it would have taken the same amount of time.

    I would have notched the cross seat support and left the stringer alone. Way less noticeable.

    • @AutoTechNick
      @AutoTechNick  10 месяцев назад

      That is a good thought. I briefly considered that as a solution, but the base of the seats is made out of 3/4 plywood. I do not have enough wood to remove and keep any strength left in the seat.
      I think that you will be surprised at how the finished product turns out and how unnoticeable it will be!
