  • This is Episode 248 of Mike Finnegan's Garage and this time I'm getting my wife's twin-turbo LSX jet boat ready for a family vacation. The cooling system is a mess so I spent a day cutting, crimping and installing new hoses and then Kevin Smith from KSR came over to help water test the boat on my local lake. It went about as well as it always does but we did learn some valuable lessons. Once testing ended I decided to teach Kevin how to ride my old 1994 Yamaha Superjet stand-up personal watercraft. That turned out to be really fun and I think he may now be as addicted to riding the thing as I am. Hope you enjoy the vid! Thanks for watching and I'll see ya soon.

Grew up with a 16' white water racing hull with a jet drive. 455 Olds rocket N/A. To help with oil cooling we put a honeycomb style oil to water inner-cooler an a gate valve with two remote mounted filters. The gate valve regulated the velocity then a pressure valve to bring the lake pressure off the jet drive to standards of usable pressure. Before the pressure valve was installed we had some low quality oil filters explode an I remember being 15 an taking an oil shower after a full throttle pull.

I wouldn't worry so much about trying to restrict the incoming flow of water so much, make sure the discharge water outlets are oversized vs the intakes. Let whatever size hose you run from the jet drive, to the intercooler be your flow restriction. So if you run half inch to the intercooler, weld on a new bung (or two) that are way over 1/2 inch so they pose almost no resistance to the water flow coming out of the intercooler. That will give you great flow and cooling, and very low actual water pressure in the core.

E85 will definitely help. Even being injected into the intake runners will still cool the charge air a bit and more importantly ethanol is a more stable fuel than petrol so even if it didn’t affect the air temp you could add more timing anyway. Also putting a larger exit on the inter cooler should reduce the pressure inside it, that way you get to keep all the flow into the core

    Twin Turbo LS is ridiculous.
Keep up the good work hahahaha
Clear example of one those legitimate "Excess is best"
Keep on keeping on. Glorious full tilt noise & they look a million bucks on the water
    2 thumbs up!!!

Could be wrong but my guess would be, the intercooler needs more flow, not pressure.
Is there a restriction somewhere that can be removed?
Feed as much water as you can to the cooler and focus on lowering the pressure by removing restrictions... Maybe..

Love all your content...especially the boats. I just sold my 40 year old Kustom Kraft TX20...Twin turbo Gale Banks BBC. Had lots of fun with it. I'm now retired and 83. One question has always been on my mind. They told me to always be in the water to run it. When I'm working on it that really inconvenient. I've seen snippets of a disconnect but never put it together. The shot of your Eliminator cleared that up. I saw the name (Jetaway) and looked it up. I would have loved to know that years ago. Nobody ever explained things to me so I'm trying to give the new guy a break. Would yo do a couple of things to help? A video explaining the Jetaway and how it's used and installed. Also, would love for you to do a deep dive on your control box and system. Lots there to learn. Thank you.

I'm yelling "did you install the regulator backwards?!?!" at my screen for at least five minutes. I think I was almost as relieved when you figured it out as you were.
