The PERFECT jetboat bilge: DURATEC & clear GELCOAT

  • After all of the hard work I have put into this bilge and gelcoat, I really get to see it pay off! But to get to that payoff I need to turn my attention to the finer details of the project. Now that I have finished applying the custom color matched gelcoat to the bilge, I now need to tackle the task of addressing those small imperfections in the gelcoat of my 1979 Centurion Jet Boat.
    My OCD and attention to detail got the best of me during this juncture of the build. I am doing my best to achieve perfection, so I decided that the next steps are to wet sand the gelcoat. The goal is to smooth out any irregularities and texture before applying a blend of 50% gelcoat and 50% Duratec for enhanced durability and resilience, and most important of all, gloss.
    But before I can jump into applying the Durtec and Gel combo, I need to address some imperfections that I left in the initial application of gelcoat. I have a lot of pin holes that I need to see if I can eliminate. I also have several sections where the two colors did not but up directly on one another. I will try a few techniques to remidy these flaws.
    Upon completion of touch ups, it's time to move on to the application of the Duratec and Clear gelcoat. This will provide a singular layer of protection, and gloss onto the bilge.
    Once cured, we'll meticulously sand down the surface again, followed by the delicate art of cutting and buffing to achieve a flawless finish that surpasses the boat's original glory.
    Join me as we elevate our restoration project to new heights, one meticulous step at a time. Don't miss out on this opportunity to witness the transformation firsthand and learn along with me, the art of gelcoat restoration.
    Hit that subscribe button and stay tuned for more updates on our journey to perfection!

    Be sure to watch the full video! Toward the end, I cover a few interesting things that outline and provide insight into my OCD and just how far I go... The little details matter to me, even if no one will see them.

    You are an absolute MANIAC of a craftsmen! Skipped ahead to take a look at this and it's amazing. Thank you for all the excellent videos. Replacing stringers and a floor in an old 17' Bayliner brought me here. On RUclips, you have set the high standard for this type of work. Cheers!

      Probably less of a manicac, and jsut more stubborn, and too cheap to pay someone to do what I want.. LoL. I am happy to hear that you are enjoying the videos! Best of luch with your rebuild!

    It looks beautiful.
    OCD will help you appreciate it more when you are done.
    Now to clear coat the outside of the boat 😁, with a very small amount of (mini) metal flake mixed into the clear coat,
    just barely enough to accent the shine. As added protection and durability.
    Less time buffing and polishing and more time on the water.
    Great job, I really enjoy watching this build. I am hoping you include the rigging (motor, electrical wiring, ride plate and diverter, etc...)
    Again, great job.
    Peace

      The exterior gel on this boat is all original, and in great shape. I would say too nice of shape to make any changes to it!
      Yes, I will be covering all aspects of this build, so engine placement, rigging, electrical etc will all be shown.

    For me to say it looks very nice is almost a insult to you !! VERY NICE JOB You have just set a new standard for the perforance boat restoration. Good to know the difference between the 2.3 & 2.5 tips is noticeable

      Thank you Don, very kind words! I was honestly surprised that there was such a difference in spraying the gel from the 2.5 vs the 2.2 tip. It really caught me off guard.

      Yeah! Definitely caught me off guard. At first I thought that all that work to color match was lost. You couldn’t really notice it on the brown and orange, just the white. But I was relieved that it got better after the cut and buff.

      Thanks! I've found the actual instructions and plan to go back with it exactly like it came out. It would just be nice to see some tips before getting to it. I've searched but can't find any videos on it. I think I'll be ok, just kinda nervous about it since it's a critical step. See you on the next one!

    very helpful video's. I am also restoring a similar boat. we have a taylor craft stiletto's modified tunnel, we are taking it from a jet to an outboard. So lots of work on the transom and sanding down the entire hull for re-gelling.

    You may be able to use a fabric dye/paint for the carpet behind the seat

    • @AutoTechNick
      @AutoTechNick  4 месяца назад

      Good point. Now that I gelcoated the bilge I feel that the carpet on the back seat is out of place. The outsides of the bilge used to be carpet to match, so it seemed more natural. I’m thinking I will reevaluate how it looks once I get the carpet put back in the front half of the boat. The carpet will work for now. My main goal is getting this back on the water, so items like the carpet on the seat that I can address later will be put on the back burner for now.

    Amazing work what was your polishing process what pads compounds and what machines?

    • @AutoTechNick
      @AutoTechNick  Месяц назад

      I was using a Makita 9227c 7" polisher, with a Mequires HEAVY cut whool pad, and M102 compund. From there I would switch to an orbital polisher with a heavy cutting micro fiber pad, and Griots Fast Cutting compound.

    After doing stringers and transom’s on over half a dozen boats, I spent too much time out on the water to be that particular.

    It’d be hard for me to put an engine cover over that bilge

    • @AutoTechNick
      @AutoTechNick  4 месяца назад

      Trust me, I feel ya. Leaving this open and throwing on a set of nice headers would look killer. However, one simply cannot beat the practicality of the enclosed engine. ESP since I have swim steps off the back of the boat. The wife and kids can walk right across the cover, with no risk of burns from the engine. This is one of the very few areas that I will side with practicality.
